The cancelation of "Star Trek: Discovery" came as a surprise for the cast and crew. It seems that word of the show's cancelation came just as director Jonathan Frakes was filming the last few episodes, and the showrunners had to rush to wrap up the series in a satisfying way, re-writing a few scenes to indicate that this was indeed the end for the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery-A. Early word is that the fifth season of "Discovery" will boast an archaeology-forward, galactic Indiana Jones-style adventure story extrapolated from the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Chase".
Naturally, the cast and crew of "Discovery" are feeling wistful. Sonequa Martin-Green (who plays Captain Burnham), Wilson Cruz (who plays Dr. Culber), and executive producer Alex Kurtzman spoke at this year's SXSW -- which /Film attended -- and they were given a moment to ensure that the series was given a proper sendoff.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" debuts on April 4, 2024, and it is a time of ambivalence. "Discovery" has struggled throughout its tenure, unsure as to what its identity should be, or what its general vibe is. Other "Star Trek" shows always featured staunch, stone-faced diplomats in ultra-professional workplace environments. The "Discovery" characters, in contrast, are teens at a slumber party, if the teens were over-dramatic theater kids and the slumber party was held after they all lost the one-act-play competition. The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery openly discuss their feelings at all times and perpetually need shoulders to cry on. The professionalism of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is long behind us.
But then, that seems to be what the show's fans like most about it. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) encourages both emotional vulnerability and her crew to approach one another with open hearts.

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Some of the greatest Star Trek episodes of all time take place in a courtroom. From the epic two-part Original Series classic “The Menagerie” to “The Measure of a Man” in The Next Generation to Deep Space Nine‘s “Inquisition” and even the memorable trials in the films The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country, putting Star Trek characters up against the outer space laws of the future tends to create memorable and moving storylines. In Strange New Worlds season 2’s “Ad Astra Per Aspera,” that tradition continues with the trial of Number One, aka Commander Una Chin-Riley. It’s a smart, moving episode that breaks some new philosophical ground for Trek, but also will remind longtime fans about what the franchise is all about: unpacking tricky ethical questions in a sci-fi setting.
But this episode is also deeply steeped in Trek lore and references.

When engineer Pelia strutted her way onto the Enterprise bridge in the premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season two, blatantly ignoring the evacuation warning and acting Captain Spock’s orders, viewers simply assumed she was just another one of the delightfully odd characters played by Carol Kane. From The Princess Bride and Scrooged to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Taxi, Kane has established herself as a master at playing wonderful oddballs, squeaky-voiced agents of chaos who disrupt the status quo simply by showing up.
And to be sure, that’s exactly what Pelia does. Not only does she see right through Spock’s (literally) textbook plan to falsely sabotage the ship and steal the Enterprise but she also offers a much more elegant solution, helping the skeleton crew answer a distress call from the erstwhile Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh.

Long-time “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak is retiring after 41 seasons, and the show undoubtedly won’t be the same without him. But eventually, someone will have to step in — and Whoopi Goldberg is very much interested in being that person, apparently.
Whoopi revealed as much on Tuesday’s episode of “The View,” during the panel’s interview with “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings. When the women asked him for his thoughts on Sajak’s retirement — having stepped into the shoes of an equally iconic host when Alex Trebek died — Jennings joked that “hopefully ‘Wheel’s’ got an envelope somewhere that says ‘What to Do When Pat Packs It In.'”
At that, host Joy Behar chimed in that “Whoopi wants the job,” and the moderator was quick to piggyback on it.

“This Is Us” took a ratings dip this week, but still managed to prevail as the top-rated show during primetime on Tuesday. The episode, which bid farewell to Jon Huertas’ Miguel, earned a 0.64 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is low compared to last week’s 0.84. But viewership was relatively unchanged, with 4.7 million tuning in this week. Last week, there were 4.9 million total viewers. Even though it was a re-airing this week, “FBI” still managed to beat “This Is Us” for total viewers, securing 4.8 million eyeballs. And on ABC, viewers were treated to a slate of premieres, which all performed fairly average: mini golf competition “Holey Moley” (0.43 and 2.8 million), Season 3 of “The Chase” (0.29 and 2.3 million), and the new true crime series “Who Do You Believe?” (0.25 and 1.8 million). Here’s how primetime went down across the major broadcast networks: NBC was first in ratings with an average 0.44 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demo.

Per fast affiliates, This Is Us delivered a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, its lowest in a month. Viewership took less of a dip, falling only 6 in that measure from the previous week. The latest installment focused on Jon Huertas’ Miguel. Read how it all came together.
Tuesday also marked the show’s final day of filming. To celebrate the occasion, the stars of This Is Us reflected on their time on the show.
“The greatest 6. years at the best job I’ve ever had,” star Mandy Moore shared on Instagram. “Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude and the Season 4 premiere of ABC’s Holey Moley. The mini-golf competition series slightly down from its two-parter Season 3 premiere in June, but stable from its September season ender
Additional titles in the 8 p.m. hour were NBC’s Young Rock and Mr. Mayor, both down, and Superman & Lois.
Beyond This Is Us, the 9 p.m. hour touted the Season 3 premiere of The Chase, and new episodes of Name That Tune and Naomi.
The evening concluded with a consistent New Amsterdam at the top of the hour besting an FBI: Most Wanted repeat and the season premiere of Who Do You Believe? on ABC.
Wednesday primetime will be pretty regular, save for a few repeats across ABC and NBC. CBS will bring the freshman season of Good Sam, which awaits a renewal, to a close.

Sara Haines is doing double-duty on ABC for the near future. In addition to her work as one of the hosts of The View, she returns May 3 to emcee The Chase, a primetime game show that pits contestants against expert quiz masters as they try to earn some big bucks. TV Insider chatted with Haines about what’s new on The Chase this season and how it’s working out at The View with rotating guests sitting in the empty chair vacated by Meghan McCain. This is belated, but it’s so great that you came back to The View in 2020 after leaving in 2018 to work on some other ABC news shows. Sara Haines: Thank you so much. I love doing it. It’s an honor to have a platform where I can share in conversations on things that I think about, things that are timely, and can be difficult to talk about.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

‘The Chase’.
The Seven Network has commissioned Beat the Chasers, a spin-off of game show The Chase that will see contestants taking on four Chasers at once – The Supernerd, Goliath, The Tiger Mum and The Shark – for a prize pool of over $500,000.
To be produced by ITV Studios Australia and hosted by Andrew O’Keefe, the show is based on a UK format created by Potato, part of and distributed by ITV Studios.
Seven Network programming director Angus Ross said: “The Chase has proven unbeatable at 5.00pm, so we can’t wait to supersize it with Beat The Chasers. The prize money is bigger than ever before in each round, and it builds to a thrilling, high-stakes finale.”
“We’re excited to see some of the country’s best brains test themselves against a formidable line-up of Chasers, with all the fun, tension and play-along we love – but dialed up to eleven.

Santiago Segura’s “Father There Is Only One 2” has punched €2.14 million ($2.5 million) across its first five days in Spain over July 29-Aug. 2, according to Comscore, maintaining its bid to become Europe’s first Covid-19 era blockbuster.
With some cinema theater takings still to come in, the box office trawl is at least 21% up on opening figures for the family comedy franchise’s first installment, which went on to become Spain’s biggest movie release of 2019, earning a final €14.2 million ($16.1 million) from an Aug. 1 bow.
This year’s opening box office has been made on one more day at the box office, with the sequel bowing on a Wednesday, and the first installment on a Thursday. But “Father 2” grossed $2.5 million from 23% fewer screens in Spain, according to Comscore — some movie theaters remain closed because of Covid-19 — and largely over a weekend that caught many Spaniards going on or returning from vacation.
