HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Do you like lists? Well, here’s a doozy. Below is everything coming to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime in June 2020.
Though the summer sun is starting to beat down, most of us are still being encouraged to stay indoors for Covid-19 related reasons. It’s not much fun, but at the very least, there’s an absolute ton of stuff landing in June that should distract you from the call of the beach.
Of particular note is the newly launched HBO Max, which is trying to catch the eye of potential subscribers with a red-hot first month. There’s an excellent selection of movies coming on June 1st, with horror titles like An American Werewolf in London (still the best werewolf movie ever made), Final Destinations 1-4, From Dusk til Dawn and Lifeforce.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

Amasia Entertainment has secured the feature film rights to The Green Hornet after a competitive bidding situation for the much-traveled property that began in 1936 as a radio adventure serial and enjoyed a revival in 2011 with the release of the Columbia Pictures feature film starring Seth Rogen.
Amasia co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo announced the acquisition of rights to a masked-man brand that has also made previous stops at Universal Pictures, Dimension Films, Miramax, and Paramount Pictures.
The Green Hornet and his valet/sidekick, Kato, were introduced on Detroit radio station Wxyz four years before the DC Comics debut of the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. The Green Hornet is a feared underworld figure but in reputation only — the mystery man is actually an undercover crimefighter who also crusades for justice with his day job as newspaper publisher Britt Reid.

Amasia Entertainment has won the feature film franchise rights “The Green Hornet,” nine years after Seth Rogen took on the title role for Sony Pictures.
Amasia’s co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo made the announcement Wednesday. Helfant is a veteran Hollywood executive who was president and chief operating officer of Marvel Studios for several years starting in 2005.
“When I was a kid, ‘The Green Hornet’ was one of my favorite television series,” he said. “I loved everything about it – The Green Hornet, Kato, and of course, the Black Beauty. Imagine Entertainment’s Kids and Family division has partnered with Breyer, a maker of collectible model horses and other toys, to develop a live-action horse-themed TV series.
The series will be executive produced by Imagine Entertainment chiefs Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, as well as Stephanie Sperber, president of Imagine Kids and Family. Ashley Avis, writer and director of the “Black Beauty” adaptation in development at Constantin Film, joins the project as showrunner and writer.
“As both a longtime equestrian and collector of Breyer horses, getting to be apart of creating this series is a very special opportunity,’ Avis said in a statement. “Breyer helped to inspire so much of my imagination and I hope to do the same for our future audiences through collaborative storytelling with these two truly eminent partners.”
Breyer got its start in 1950 as a molding company in Chicago that made model horses to top a mantlepiece clock sold by F.

Cannes — 2019’s Cannes hit the floor running. Even after just two days of business, major sales companies were fielding offers from much of the world on top titles. After four days, quite a few were pretty confident they’d sell much of the world. Some of those deals are now being confirmed. Martin Moszkowicz, executive chairman of Germany’s Constantin Film, the company behind the “Resident Evil” franchise and now “Monster Hunter,” and Germany’s biggest independent distributor, gave his take on this year’s Cannes Film Market before it kicked off and then for a provisional Variety industry wrap. Constantin Film has of course skin in the game, producing “Black Beauty,” with Kate Winslet voicing the horse, and “Wrong Turn,” a reimagining of its hugely successful horror film franchise, which, brought onto the market by Mister Smith Entertainment, look like two of the market hits. “The dead don’t die,” Constantin CEO Martin Moszkowicz joked on Thursday afternoon on Cannes’ Grand Hotel terrace, one of the Cannes Film Festival’s favorite industry haunts.
Moszkowicz wasn’t just quoting the title of Jim Jarmusch’s Festival Cannes opening movie, a zombie film set in small-town America. He was also implying that there are more movies coming to Cannes with commercial potential. And the good news for distributors like Moszkowicz is that these movie are cheaper to buy. To be sure, that’s not such a positive development for producers hoping to make a big profit on their latest projects.
After several years of cautious dealmaking at Cannes, there are signs that a larger number of movies are being sold at this year’s festival. Whether that points to full market rebound, however, is questionable. The larger picture is mixed. You could almost hear the industry collectively...

The U.S. movie business is undergoing a wave of dramatic consolidation.
Major studios are being swallowed up and indie players are dropping like flies. Though the Cannes Film Festival is unfolding an ocean and several time zones away from Hollywood, the aftershocks from the mega-mergers and bankruptcies currently roiling the entertainment industries will likely be felt by the executives and agents prowling the Croisette in search of movies to buy.
“There aren’t a lot of U.S. distributors, period,” said Martin Moszkowicz, CEO of Constantin Film, the producer of “Resident Evil.”
Twentieth Century Fox Film has been subsumed into Walt Disney Studios as part of a larger $71.3 billion deal. Under its new ownership, it is expected to release fewer than six movies annually, roughly half of what it once fielded in a typical year. That means that the number of major studios have shrunk from six to five.

Stanley Tucci has been added to the cast of Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’.
Also joining Tucci on the cast is comedian Chris Rock. Both Tucci and Rock join the already cast Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch, the role previously played by Angelica Houston in the 1990 classic, and Octavia Spencer who will play the role of the grandmother of the main character Bruno.
It has been reported that the new version will be staying closer to the novel than the 1990 offering which was merely a loose adaptation. The film follows a seven-year-old boy (Bruno) who has a run-in with real-life witches.
Zemeckis, as well as directing, will also pen the script. He will also serve as producer with his partner Jack Rapke through their banner ImageMovers, along with Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro.

Mackenzie Foy and Kate Winslet have signed up to star in Ashley Avis’s reboot of the classic story of ‘Black Beauty’.
Foy will take the leading role as a 17-year-old girl whose bond with Black Beauty helps her overcome the death of her parents.
Winslet will have an easier job of it as she will provide the voice of the horse, Black Beauty.
Based on the best-selling children’s classic by Anna Sewell, Avis will direct the film from a script she has adapted herself. The film will be a fictional autobiography of the titular wild horse. In a significant change from Sewell’s book, in which Black Beauty is a carriage horse, in the new adaptation, she is a wild mustang captured on the Wyoming Plains.

As fly-on-the-wall rock-doc experiences go, there are few more thrilling than the first 10 minutes of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1968 film Sympathy for the Devil.
After the opening credits silently roll, we’re immediately transported to London’s Olympic Studios in the June of 1968, where the Rolling Stones are recording what will become Beggar’s Banquet. The band is in peak Byronic-dandy form, sporting an impressive array of colorful trousers and footwear (Bill Wyman’s hot pink boots take first prize), but it quickly becomes clear that these gentlemen aren’t merely flouncing around in their finery.

As TV Editor of the New York Post, Robert Rorke not only knows how to write supremely about television, the savvy Gold Derby Emmy Expert (he beat all of our other Experts predicting Emmys in 2016) just proved he can write a darned good novel, too: “Car Trouble,” recently published by Harper Perennial. Actually, it reads like a memoir, but even though the book’s author and its protagonist both grew up in Brooklyn circa 1960s-1970s and bear many other similarities, the protagonist is named Nicky and growing up is especially tough for this kid.
That’s because cars aren’t really his trouble. It’s his dad, who’s often blotto, jobless, derelict and sometimes he even uses Nicky as a punching bag when soused or, when sober, as a dutiful but reluctant assistant to fix or ditch old autos at inconvenient times when the rest of Brooklyn is...

Director Gavin O'Connor ("The Accountant") will reboot the classic radio drama hero 'The Green Hornet' for Paramount, as a "...serious, hard-hitting crime-fighting feature...":
"My intention is to bring a gravitas to 'The Green Hornet' that wipes away the camp and kitsch of the previous iteration," said O'Connor.
"I want to re-mythologize 'The Green Hornet' in a contemporary context, with an emphasis on story and character, while at the same time, incorporating themes that speak to my heart."
Since his radio debut in the 1930's, 'Green Hornet' appeared in film serials throughout the early 1940's, a network television program in the 1960's, multiple comic book series from the 1940's on, and a comedic (?) feature film in 2011.
The franchise is currently owned by Green Hornet, Inc., licensing the property across a wide variety of media.

It’s tough to make a TV show about a car. Oh, sure there have been some really cool cars featured in TV shows like Batman (the Batmobile), Green Hornet (the Black Beauty), Starsky & Hutch (their ‘75 Ford Gran Torino), or My Mother the Car, but they were never front and center. That all changed with Knight Rider, the David Hasselhoff series that originally ran on NBC from 1982-1986. In the show, undercover Lapd officer Michael Arthur Long is shot in the face during an assignment and left for dead. Instead, he’s saved by self-made billionaire Wilton Knight (Richard Basehart). Following plastic surgery, Michael is given the last name Knight and made the lead field agent in Flag (Foundation for Law and Government), a public justice organization and, armed with Kitt (Knight Industries Two Thousand), a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am equipped with artificial intelligence among other high-tech features, he fights for justice.

The classic Anna Sewell novel Black Beauty and its adaptations have served as a bible of sorts for horse lovers worldwide. Ok, maybe that's a bit strong, but I've met a fair few horse lovers in my life that have a huge obsession with this work, so they'll most likely be jazzed by the news the franchise is getting a modern retelling.
Deadline reports a new Black Beauty film is in the works, and while it will mirror the events of the book set in 1877, it will also bring the story into the present day. The film will focus on a recently orphaned teenager named Jo Green, who goes to live with her uncle at a horse and animal sanctuary on Long Island. Jo Green will bond with Black Beauty, who has a somewhat similar incident happen when she is separated from her parents out West.

Exclusive: Ashley Avis has been set to write and direct a modern reimagining of Black Beauty, the classic Anna Sewell novel. Bolt Pictures and Constantin Film are teaming to produce the pic, which will mirror the events of the original 1877 book while bringing them into a modern light.
The plot will center on Jo Green, a teenager who recently lost her parents, who is sent to live with her uncle at a horse and animal sanctuary on Long Island. She eventually bonds with the wild Black Beauty, who was similarly taken away from her family when her mustang herd was captured in the West.
Constantin’s Robert Kulzer will produce with Jeremy Bolt. Martin Moszkowicz and Jon Brown are executive producers.
Avis’ feature film credits include 2016’s Deserted starring Mischa Barton and this year’s Adolescence. The writer-director-editor is also a longform commercials helmer. She is repped by Ensemble Entertainment and Morris,...

Add another animal star to the ever-expanding movie zoo. Now make room Garfield and Benjy, ’cause he’s a big fella’, part of the equine film lineage. He’s not recreating a true sports legend like Seabiscuit or Secretariat. No, he’s a descendant of the fictional horses that have had special friendships with their human riders and trainers. It’s a long line going back to Black Beauty thru National Velvet and My Friend Flicka up to Casey’S Shadow and The Black Stallion (plus there’s the sidekick spin-offs such as My Pal Trigger). From the look of this film’s poster art, movie goers might think they’re in for a new version of the sentimental stories of the friendship between a boy and his “four-footed friend”. Well, hold on to the reins, because this tale’s got a curve more surprising than the twistiest of running tracks.

Nostalgia, which had its world premiere in Palm Springs this week, is an ambitious movie from some well-regarded filmmakers and actors, but it just doesn’t jell. The film revives a mode of storytelling without a single protagonist, flowing from one group of characters to another. The archetypal example may be Max Ophuls’ La Ronde, which followed a series of sexual contacts, leading to new characters and stories every 10 or 15 minutes. Commercial movies like Black Beauty and The Yellow Rolls Royce have utilized the same format, and more recently, adventurous filmmakers have experimented with this structure in such films...

March 30, 1970. Racing champion Secretariat was born.
After Citation in 1948, Secretariat became the first U.S. Triple Crown winner in 25 years and became the stuff of legend.
New York Post columnist Larry Merchant said:
“Secretariat is the kind of Big Horse that makes grown men weep, even when they are flint-hearted bettors, even when he goes off at 1-10. He is the apparently unflawed hunk of beauty and beast they search for doggedly in the racing charts every day, and never seemed to find. His supporters rhapsodize over him as though he is a four-legged Nureyev, extolling virtues of his musculature, his grace, his urine specimens.” If he were to lose the Belmont, Merchant warned, “the country may turn sullen and mutinous.”
As of 2015, only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown: Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), and American Pharoah (2015).

The sensational, overlooked film scores from the years 1990 to 1999 that really are well worth digging out...
The movies went through tumultuous and exciting changes in the nineties. Quentin Tarantino exploded onto the scene with Reservoir Dogs, Generation X gave rise to slacker marvels like Clerks, and blockbusters like The Matrix put the awe back into special effects.
However, the 90s was also a sensational decade for film music, gifting us classics including the likes of Jurassic Park, Titanic, Total Recall, Braveheart and countless others. But the sheer quality of these soundtrack treasures shouldn’t overshadow those undervalued hidden gems that demonstrate the extraordinary range and versatility of our finest film composers, ones that may have passed you by. So here’s our selection of those incredible works: ranging from the earworming to the unsettling, the melodic to the chaotic, these are the scores that simply demand your attention.
