Throughout her illustrious run in the realm of music, Taylor Swift has cemented herself as one of, if not the biggest pop icon of the 21st century and has amassed an enormous following. But like every massive fandom, a part of the Swifties community is toxic as well, who often go out of their way to retaliate against anyone who dares to speak ill of the Cats star.
Michael J. Fox, whose opinion of Swift has changed drastically over the years, once found himself amidst heavy fire from the Swifties in 2013 following his initial remarks on the pop icon.

It is no news that Cillian Murphy is indeed one of the finest actors in all of the entertainment industry. Renowned for his epic superhit series Peaky Blinders and his recent nuclear blockbuster Oppenheimer, the 47-year-old Hollywood heartthrob has presented his fans with some of the most cinematic experiences of all time. Despite that, Murphy doesn’t watch his own works.
Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders
Though such has become the trend that many other actors and actresses follow as well, Cillian Murphy sticks strictly to this act of not watching any of the films that he stars in. But even then, there’s an exception to this unspoken rule, and this exception is the very cult classic of his that will soon be getting its sequel trilogy after being released more than two decades ago: 28 Days Later.

On her “Promiscuous”-coded single “Greedy,” Tate McRae warns potential suitors about letting her attention go to their head — but she never said that she couldn’t be over-indulgent herself. The Canadian pop musician will keep her hot streak going with Think Later, her sophomore album set for release on Dec. 8, just weeks after she’s scheduled to make her Saturday Night Live debut.

You know, there didn’t need to be a sequel to 28 Days Later. The influential zombie movie by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland had a pretty definitive ending, with the rage virus seemingly burnt out in the UK and help coming from overseas.
But then came the surprisingly solid sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007, in which director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo told an interesting Gulf War allegory starring Robert Carlyle, Idris Elba, and Jeremy Renner. That’s when we all started asking, “What about 28 Years Later?”
We still have a way to go before we hit the 28th anniversary of the 2002 release of 28 Days Later, but Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are ready to start planning. In an oral history of the movie published by Inverse, Garland revealed that “a few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny always liked the idea.

An Oscar winner for his documentary Man on Wire and the filmmaker behind 2014’s awards juggernaut The Theory of Everything, James Marsh has been away from the big screen for a few years (his last project was the 2018 heist film King of Thieves). But he comes to Cannes with two buzzy projects in the market. In Night Boat to Tangier, he takes on Kevin Barry’s New York Times best-seller with a cast including Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Negga.
That film hasn’t shot yet, but Marsh has already completed a rather different feature, Dance First. A sweeping account of the life of literary icon Samuel Beckett (the title is taken from his ethos, “Dance first, think later”), the film sees Gabriel Byrne as the Nobel Prize winner in a story that covers the many aspects of his younger years: from Parisian bon vivant to WWII resistance fighter and philandering husband.

There once was a moment when playing the villain in a Batman movie was a status symbol in Hollywood. Jack Nicholson famously was paid in the ballpark of $80 to $90 million after his back-end deal to do the original Batman movie of 1989; Jim Carrey was officially marked as an A-lister when he got cast as the Riddler opposite Tommy Lee Jones, who was fresh off his Oscar win for The Fugitive (1993), in Batman Forever (1995); and Pulp Fiction’s Uma Thurman beat out Julia Roberts at the peak of her America’s Sweetheart superstardom to be Poison Ivy to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin (1997).
That kind of glitzy—and what some might call stunt—casting came to an end with Batman Begins (2005). As the first hard reset of a popular movie franchise in the 21st century, this is the film that put “reboot” in the lexicon with Christian Bale assuming a brooding,...

Meredith Grey performed her “last” surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during the winter premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursday. But Ellen Pompeo’s final episode as a series regular felt more like a “see you later,” leaving plenty of questions unanswered and the door open for her character’s return.
ABC promoted the episode, titled “I’ll Follow the Sun,” as Meredith’s big farewell to Seattle. Previews for the hour paid homage to the many traumatic moments, goodbyes, accomplishments and near-death experiences the doctor has procured across 19 seasons and over 400 episodes, but the hour itself played more like real life — with a dose of romantic comedy frustration.
The installment began as Meredith and her children arrived at the hospital for her last day on the job, in the aftermath of her longtime Seattle home sustaining damage in a fire. In a conversation with love interest Dr. Nick Marsh...

Kelsea Grammer rocked an old-school look on the red carpet at Wednesday night’s ACM Honors in Nashville — courtesy of none other than Shania Twain.
That’s because Ballerini wore the exact same white dress that Twain wore to the 1999 Grammy Awards, when the Canadian country superstar nabbed two Grammys when her hit single “Still the One” took top honours for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song.

Julian (Dominic West) endures the actions of a performer named Oleg (Terry Notary), in Ruben Ostlund’s satire The Square. Photo courtesy of Magnolia Pictures (c).
Ruben Ostlund’s satire The Square was Cannes’ Palme D’Or winner this year but this ambitious film is a decidedly unusual winner. Ostlund’s previous film, Force Majeure, explored a single morally-bad choice in a caustically comic way. The Square turns a satiric eye on modern art, contemporary society, political correctness, homelessness, sex, income inequality and more, although it often focuses on the subject of trust. The Square, partly in English and partly in Swedish with subtitles, is sly, darkly satiric and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny film, when it is not just downright disturbing. This is not a film for everyone, but it has rewards for those up for its wild ride.
The story revolves around Christian (Claes Bang), the curator at a modern art museum in Sweden.

Maggie Gyllenhaal needs some room to breathe. That's as true within The Deuce as it is about it. In this week's episode – "I See Money" – the series star's sex-worker Candy feels increasingly trapped by the emotional restraints and physical discomforts of her job. But as a character within the larger narrative, she's so hemmed in by the show's countless other characters, who are crowded out by each other in turn, that she's left with little to do but plod from one scene to the next until the closing credits roll.

Last week, Austin’s annual Fantastic Fest bowed under a cloud that stemmed from the secret re-hiring of former Birth.Movies.Death. editor-in-chief Devin Faraci by Drafthouse founder Tim League and the continuing fallout of accusations directed at co-founder Harry Knowles. As the beloved genre festival kicks into its second half, it continues to draw attention for programming choices that reportedly left audience members on edge.
Over the weekend, Fanstastic Fest attendee Kim Sherman took to Instagram to share her experience with a Saturday afternoon showing of Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’or winner “The Square,” an event capped by a post-screening stunt that didn’t strike Sherman and other audience members as a wise choice.

Usher swung by Alfred Coffee in West Hollywood on Friday — more than a week after three individuals announced they were suing him for failing to warn them he reportedly had herpes before having sex.
The “Yeah!” singer looked casual, comfortable and unfazed in a pink shirt, shorts and matching white sneakers. He accessorized the look with dark shades, silver jewelry, and a camouflage bucket hat.
In July, it was revealed Usher paid a female celebrity stylist who claimed she contracted herpes from him $1.1 million to settle a 2012 lawsuit. According to court papers filed by the woman and published by Radar Online.

“Dunkirk” is finally upon us after months of anticipation, and it’s clear the long wait has been worth it. IndieWire has named the WWII epic the best movie Christopher Nolan has ever made and a certain Oscar contender in the months ahead. No one loves a great scene more than the person who first dreamed it up -- the writer. We're asking iconic shows' creators and writers to tell Et all about getting to see their most cherished moment on their series make it from script to screen.
On Wednesday, Feb. 8, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will reach a major TV milestone when it airs its 400th episode, a feat only previously achieved by eight scripted series over the past four decades. While a lot of credit for the show’s success and stamina is given to the cast led by Mariska Hargitay, who has won an Emmy for playing Det. Late Tuesday night, the confirmation hearing for President-elect Donald Trump‘s Education Secretary nominee, Betsy DeVos, got underway after significant back-and-forth in the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
DeVos, the billionaire former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, struggled through tough questioning by the committee’s Democratic members and gave responses that ignited Internet uproar over her readiness for the position as the nation’s top education policy-maker and policy-enforcer.
Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, the committee’s Republican chairman, pushed the hearing to an atypical 5 p.m. start time, and allowed each member only one round of five-minute questions.

Later this week, Lrm will be attending this year’s Sundance Film Festival. While the festival tends to be a mixed bag of indie films, some will be picked up for distribution by studios and turned into mainstream hits, others will flounder and be lucky to get a VOD release. Even so, there’s no denying that Sundance is the real beginning of the year for most movie lovers as we’ll be talking about the movies below for the next 12 months.
Last year alone, Sundance held the premieres for The Birth of a Nation, Manchester by the Sea, Captain Fantastic, Love and Friendship, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Sing Street and many more films, some that appeared on The Weekend Warrior’s year-end Top 25. One or two of those might even receive Oscar nominations when they’re announced next week on January 24.

Their baby girl — who turns 1 next month — snuggled up to her mom’s bosom on Tuesday, during an “all day” flight to Los Angeles.

As Spinal Tap lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel – wearer of anatomically correct T-shirts, owner of amplifiers that go to "11," writer of delicate compositions like "Lick My Love Pump" – Christopher Guest, along with director Rob Reiner and his co-writers/bandmates Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, turned 1984's This Is Spinal Tap into a devastatingly funny dissection of rock pomposity. To say that the film's mix of off-the-cuff jokes and straight-faced parody has influenced several generations of filmmakers and funny people would be a vast understatement – everyone from Ricky Gervais to Fred Armisen...

New York City has been the home base and preferred story setting for many talented film makers, from Woody Allen to Noah Baumbach to Spike Lee. Each has given audiences a unique look at this very familiar metropolis. With this new release, another writer/director joins that roster: Ira Sachs. His last film, the charming, heart-breaking family drama Love Is Strange took us all around the area, and included a major source of conflict and anxiety for those residents, in general, real estate. Characters mulled over many real life concerns of the NYC populace, rent control, leases, tenant rights, landlords. Sach’s new film also delves into this, but it’s also a family drama, this time about two very different families. Real estate connects them initially, but a friendship further joins them. Don’t be misled by the literary title. This is not another adaptation of Louisa May Alcott...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman and Spinal Tap!, has returned with Mascots and I couldn't be more excited. This time he's utilizing his 'mockumentary' style to explore the world of sports mascots. It's Best in Show, but with animals that aren't real. What I like about Christopher Guest is that he doesn't write jokes, per se. He writes characters who are extreme. And those characters say funny things. It's a subtle difference but an important one. None of the character in a Christopher Guest movie know they are being funny. They aren't saying things to make an unseen audience laugh. As much as I enjoy shows like 30 Rock or Family Guy, which are engines for a stream of gags, I love the purity of Guest's comedy.

Befitting his legacy as a comedy icon, Garry Marshall was busy working up until the end of his life.
Marshall died Tuesday due to pneumonia complications. He was 81.
Most recently, Marshall proudly served as an executive consultant on CBS’ “The Odd Couple” revival, now heading into its third season. Marshall, who turned the Neil Simon play into a hit ABC sitcom in the early 1970s, spent the past two years giving advice and working with the show’s producers. Earlier this year, he even appeared on camera as Walter Madison, Oscar’s (Matthew Perry) father.
“I keep creating,” Marshall told us in 2015 at the Television Critics Assn. press tour. “I’m still pitching shows, as many people are,” he said, referring to a show he had in the works at the time about triplets. “What’s exciting is when the network gets behind it. Here, CBS is behind [the ‘Odd Couple’ revival].”

Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brokovich (2000) is playing July 17 - August 16, 2016 on Mubi in the United Kingdom. “Erin Brockovich is perhaps the most forceful articulation of Soderbergh’s proclivity toward emphasizing character over other filmic concerns. Without sacrificing their causal role within the narrative, who characters are is often of greater interest than what they do—indeed, what they will do and accomplish is often a foregone conclusion… while Erin Brockovich may, thematically, be a film about responsibility, formally, Erin Brockovich is a movie about Erin Brockovich—and decidedly so.”— Andrew Patrick Nelson, in The Philosophy of Steven Soderbergh“I’m smart, I’m hardworking and I’m not leaving here without a job.”— Erin, Erin BrockovichErin Brockovich must win people over. As a single mother of three who wears short skirts and low-cut tops, she’s at the more preyed-upon end of a predatory spectrum—one whose social logic is built on first impressions.

Do you believe in ghosts? Paul Feig does. Minutes into the refreshingly funny reboot of the 1984 classic Ghostbusters, Feig and his gal gang of comediennes not-so-subtly acknowledge the specter in the room: the resistance to a female reboot of this revered film. Kristen Wiig’s character, Erin Gilbert, sees her tenure position jeopardized by the appearance of a book she co-authored, “Ghosts From Your Past, Literally and Figuratively.” Later, with the help of her fellow writer, Melissa McCarthy’s character Abby Yates, she posts a video on YouTube of her first ghost encounter. A commenter on the site complains: “Ain’t no b!tches gonna hunt no ghosts.”
But in the new Ghostbusters movie Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, & Co., clearly aware of the ghouls that haunt them, exorcise their demons.

The TV event of 2016 so far was surely FX's marvelous miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which turned the Trial of the (last) Century into 10 fascinating, funny, tragic hours of drama that shed new light on a case that most of its viewers thought they already knew by heart. Given the phenomenon of The People v. O.J., you would think a five-part, 7.5-hour (10 with commercials) documentary on the same subject would be redundant. Who needs to spend even more time watching a retelling of Simpson's trial for murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman? Instead, Espn's newest 30 for 30 film O.J. Simpson: Made in America(*) proves to not only be better than The People v. O.J. — and among the best things Espn has aired in its history — but a perfect complement to the FX show. Where People v.
