“How dark do you want to go?” The man asking that is named Karsh (Vincent Cassel), and he’s seated in a minimalist art-chic restaurant having lunch with a blind date. The one who’s really asking the question, though, is David Cronenberg, writer-director of “The Shrouds.” He’s been asking that question — to audiences — for his entire career, and to him the answer has always been the same: The darker the better.
Yet Cronenberg has a special brand of dark. In “The Shrouds,” Karsh is a businessman who produces industrial videos, with a sleek Toronto apartment that looks out at the Cn Tower, but he’s also a co-owner of the restaurant they’re sitting in, and the purveyor of what’s in the garden next to it: a cemetery where the gravestones are technological devices, and the corpses are draped in futuristic shrouds that allow you to peer...

The horror genre is one that frequently insists upon sequels and franchises, even when they’re woefully misguided endeavors. There are too many sequels that are set up to fail and seem financially driven and creatively bankrupt, whether it’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Rage: Carrie 2, or American Psycho II: All American Girl. However, it’s always electric when one of these sequels does something special, different, and audiences are left with a Psycho II or The Exorcist III scenario on their hands. The Fly II is a horror sequel that was largely written off the moment that it was announced, sans David Cronenberg, even if its existence makes sense. The Fly II isn’t superior to its predecessor, but it does excel in many areas that are absent in the original. It brings something new to the table and marks a unique voice in body...

Intro: There’s a scene, roughly half way through the much maligned Robocop 3, in which the eponymous law enforcer is malfunctioning, battered and bruised, which is almost the perfect metaphor for the franchise at this point. As outlined in our previous video in this series, Robocop 2 may have had its fair share of issues, but alongside the annoying characters and a frustratingly dumbed down hero, it’s actually a pretty decent movie. It was just nowhere near the sequel it could so easily have been. Which leads us to part three, which is, well…Where do we start? Historically, in the wonderful world of movies in which we all often reside, part three’s, and later sequels to popular franchises, have that nagging tendency to Look like they should, but for the most part, this familiarity leads to something so very, very…Wrong! After six months of searching, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office confirmed today that the human remains found earlier this week by hikers were, indeed, those of actor Julian Sands. He had been missing since mid-January.
The statement (read it below) says his cause of death is still pending, but Sands was an experienced hiker who loved the outdoors.
The positive identification comes less than a week after Sands’ family issued their first statement on the matter, saying they are “deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.”

You know you are watching a David Cronenberg film within the first few minutes. His unique directorial vision and style are instantly recognizable. For over 50 years, Cronenberg has been pushing the boundaries of mainstream cinema with his unflinching explorations of the human body and psyche. His films delve into humanity’s deepest fears and darkest desires, all with his signature clinical precision and intellectual curiosity.

Cronenberg emerged from the “Canuxploitation” era of Canadian B-movies in the 1970s to become one of the most influential auteurs in modern film. His early cult classics like Shivers and Scanners established his fascination with the physicality of human existence and all the ways our flesh and minds can mutate and transform. Cronenberg’s films are known for their disturbing body horror and surreal science fiction concepts, but at their core, they reveal fundamental truths about human nature and our relationship with our own physical being.

“There’s nothing the matter with the instrument, it’s the body. The woman’s body is all wrong!”
We’ve discussed how vulnerable it can be to be under the bright lights of the dentist’s chair but how about the doctor, particularly a specialty doctor that’s job is to deal with our most private of parts. David Cronenberg is the master of turning our bodies into horrible things that seek to hurt us, perfecting the use of the term “body horror”. So, what happens when Cronenberg makes a movie about twin gynecologists that begin to lose their grip on reality, and did you know that this is actually based on true events?...

To celebrate the release of Naked Lunch – released on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray 17th April from Arrow Video – we have a 4K Uhd up for grabs!
In a career dedicated to seeing the unseeable and filming the unfilmable, perhaps only David Cronenberg could really do justice to William S. Burroughs’ controversial novel, Naked Lunch. Weaving together elements of Burroughs’ own remarkable biography with the content of the book, Cronenberg’s film steps inside the body and mind of an author to depict the dangerous act of imagination itself from the inside out.
Winner of Best Picture, Best Direction, and Best Screenplay at the 1992 Genie Awards and featuring an astonishing score by Howard Shore (Videodrome), Naked Lunch is provocative, transgressive, and surreal – a feast for the senses, where nothing is true and everything is permitted.
Former junkie William Lee makes ends meet as an exterminator. But when he and his wife...

To celebrate David Cronenberg's 80th birthday, check out his underrated adaptation of the controversial novel "Naked Lunch."
David Cronenberg, the undisputed king of cinematic body horror, turns 80 this month, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Last year, with the release of "Crimes of the Future," he heartily reminded audiences that there's no filmmaker greater than he when it comes to piercing dissections (often literally) of the human form's grotesqueries and its relationship with the wider world. He's so distinctive, so unflinching in his portrayal of that which horrifies us most, that we use the adjective Cronenbergian to describe works inspired by him. Every fan of Cronenberg has their favorite moments from his vast filmography, whether it's the exploding head in "Scanners," Jeff Goldblum's disintegration in "The Fly," or the abnormal births in "The Brood." One of his lesser-discussed films, and perhaps his most curious effort as a director,...

Jimmy Kimmel reacted to revelations that President Trump’s administration tried to convince his Disney bosses to censor his late night talk show in 2018.
As reported by Rolling Stone, the then-president was so outraged by the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host’s ongoing jokes that he ordered his White House staff to phone “one of Disney’s top executives … to complain and demand action … The incident was so bizarre that news of it spread around the corridors of power in Washington.”
Kimmel described on Monday night’s show waking up to a flurry of messages about the news.
At first, Kimmel spent a few minutes making jokes about the revelations, such as: “Maybe this is why Donald and Melania sleep in separate bedrooms — she was laughing too hard at my monologue at night” and “I made fun of O.J. [Simpson] a thousand times; he hasn’t tried to kill me once...

British actor Julian Sands has gone missing while hiking in southern California.
The prolific film and TV star was reported missing by his wife, the writer Evgenia Citkowitz, after going hiking in the San Gabriel mountains on Friday 13 January. He is a keen hiker, who once described his happiest moment as “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”.
Authorities are carrying out an extensive search-and-rescue mission for the 65-year-old actor, though extreme weather conditions had caused delays and interruptions. His adult son, Henry, is assisting in the search with an experienced climber.
The search has entered its 11th day, with Sands’ family issuing a statement on Monday 23 January thanking authorities for their “heroic” efforts.
“His family are frantic with worry,” a close friend told The Independent.
Throughout his life, Sands appeared in more than 150 films and TV series, including several Oscar winners.

Julian Sands, a British actor best known for his roles in films like the 1985 drama ‘A Room With a View’ and the 1989 horror entry ‘Warlock’, was reported missing at about 7.30 p.m. last Friday, January 13.
Sands had been hiking in the Baldy Bowl hiking area, approximately 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles, reports ‘Variety’.
According to a representative for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, ground crews responded and began searching the area soon after the 65-year-old Sands was reported missing. However, parties had to be pulled Saturday evening, after roughly 24 hours of searching, due to avalanche risks and trail conditions.
Sands is known to be an enthusiastic mountaineer. “I love climbing mountains, I’ve spent a lot of time in the Alps over the years, a lot of time in the Andes, Alaska and the American ranges,” Sands told ThriveGlobal in 2020.
Authorities have continued with intermittent searches by helicopter and drone.

Actor Julian Sands, known for roles in the films A Room With a View and Warlock, was reported missing Friday after going hiking in California’s San Gabriel Mountains earlier that day, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nate Campos told The Hollywood Reporter.
Sands, a 65-year-old resident of North Hollywood, was reported missing around 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Baldy Bowl area of Mount Baldy, according to authorities. A search began, but ground crews were taken off the mountain Saturday evening amid avalanche risks and poor trail conditions due to snow and ice.
Search continued via helicopters and drones as weather permitted, and ground crews will resume their work when it is safe to do so. The sheriff’s department, which is working with Forest Service to find Sands, urges individuals to stay out of the area due to treacherous hiking conditions.

Life can often bring people in unexpected directions. However, those meanderings can lead to a new outlook, altering how you see the world and the individuals around you. Luca Guadagnino knows this, and that’s why he’s teaming with Daniel Craig for an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel Queer. Inspired by Burrough’s autobiographical work, Queer explores the world-famous author’s romantic side, telling a tale about taboo, dependancy, and unbridled curiosity.
Here is the official synopsis for Burroughs’s Queer novel:
Initially written in 1952 but not published till 1985, Queer is an enigma. Both an unflinching autobiographical self-portrait and a coruscatingly political novel, it is both Burroughs’s only realist love story and a montage of comic-grotesque fantasies that paved the way for his masterpiece, Naked Lunch. Set in Mexico City during the early fifties, Queer follows William Lee, the protagonist of Burroughs’s debut novel Junky,...

Just imagine if Daniel Craig's version of James Bond never returned from his beach bar retirement in "Skyfall," and instead got addicted to heroin, before quitting the drug and going through withdrawals while pining over a handsome sailor. That could be something like what we'll get with "Queer," which will reportedly team Craig with "Call Me By Your Name" and "Suspira" filmmaker Luca Guadagnino for an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novella. The semi-autobiographical story, published in 1985, centers on Lee — the protagonist of Burrough's 1953 novel "Junkie: Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict" — who pursues a discharged Navy soldier on the American expat bar scene in Mexico City.
According to Deadline, Guadagnino has had this adaptation of "Queer" in development for some time and is now acquiring the funds to finally make it a reality. Both he and Craig are coming off the release of a new film, with...

Luca Guadagnino has been looking to mount a feature take of the William S. Burroughs novel Queer with Daniel Craig in the lead as his next project. The Call Me By Your Name Oscar nominee is the process of raising financing for the project.
Queer follows Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits. Lee is self-conscious, insecure and driven to pursue a young man named Allerton, who is based on Adelbert Lewis Marker (1930-1998), a recently discharged American Navy serviceman from Jacksonville, Fl, who befriended Burroughs in Mexico City. The novel is a sequel to Burroughs’ Junkie and centers on the Naked Lunch author off of heroin. Queer was published in 1985 through written between 1951 and 1953.

Jimmy Kimmel refused his network’s request to lighten up on mocking Donald Trump, and threatened to quit hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Kimmel appeared on the latest edition of Sticher’s “Naked Lunch” podcast, hosted by “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator Phil Rosenthal and Rolling Stone writer David Wild, where he revealed that he balked when ABC executives asked him to lighten up on his vicious Trump jokes so as not to offend Republican viewers.
“There was one time, right around the beginning of this whole Trump thing… maybe not quite [eight years ago],” Kimmel said, as reported by Variety. “I said listen, I get it, you’re right.
I have lost half of my fanbase, maybe more. Ten years ago, among Republicans I was the most popular talk show. At least according to the research they did.”

Jimmy Kimmel says he lost half his fanbase when he began making pointedly critical jokes about Donald Trump, and that he was prepared to quit Jimmy Kimmel Live! if ABC execs demanded he go easy on the then-president.
“Ten years ago, among Republicans, I was the most popular talk show host,” Kimmel said this week on the Phil Rosenthal-David Wild podcast Naked Lunch. “At least according to the research they did.”
Kimmel said on the podcast that ABC execs “hinted at” their concern around the time at “the beginning of this whole Trump thing.”
“I said, ‘If that’s what you want to do, I understand, I don’t begrudge you for it, but I’m not going to do that. If you want someone else to host the show, that’s fine with me. I’m just not going to do it like that,’” Kimmel said on the podcast.

Jimmy Kimmel has revealed that he told ABC that he’d quit his show after they expressed apprehension over him telling jokes about Donald Trump.
“There was one time, right around the beginning of this whole Trump thing… maybe not quite [eight years ago],” Kimmel told the hosts of Naked Lunch podcast.

Jimmy Kimmel revealed on the most recent episode of Sticher’s “Naked Lunch” podcast that he threatened to quit his ABC talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” when ABC executives expressed apprehension over him telling jokes about Donald Trump. It appears the execs once spoke to Kimmel about laying off Trump in order to not alienate Republican viewers. Kimmel said ABC execs were right in their apprehension, as he estimates he lost around half of his audience due to Trump jokes.
“There was one time, right around the beginning of this whole Trump thing… maybe not quite [eight years ago],” Kimmel said when asked if ABC ever expressed concern to him about attacking Trump. “I said listen, I get it, you’re right. I have lost half of my fanbase, maybe more. Ten years ago, among Republicans I was the most popular talk show. At least according to the research they did.”

Jimmy Kimmel says he knows his fan base has shrunk due to his criticisms of former President Donald Trump.
While appearing on the latest episode of the Naked Lunch podcast, hosted by Phil Rosenthal and David Wild, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host opened up about why he’s remained so outspoken about the former president on his late night show and what that has cost him. He addressed the topic after Rosenthal asked whether the show’s network, ABC, had ever asked, “Could you not just attack this side and lay off a little bit, because we’re going to lose those people?”
“There was at one time, maybe, I don’t know, right around the beginning of this whole Trump thing where … that was kind of hinted at, but I just said, ‘Listen, I get it. I don’t disagree. I mean,...
