Young Sheldon will end its very successful run in May after seven seasons. While the team behind the show is busy tying up loose ends and looking to the future with more spinoffs, they are still figuring out everything that will happen in the show’s final season. McEntire played the part of Dale Ballard’s ex-wife, June Ballard, during three seasons. Norman Lear, the writer, producer and citizen activist who coalesced topical conflict and outrageous comedy in such wildly popular sitcoms as All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and The Jeffersons, has died. He was 101.
Lear died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by his family who, according to a statement on his official Instagram account, sang songs until the very end.
“Norman lived a life in awe of the world around him. He marveled at his cup of coffee every morning, the shape of the tree outside his window, and the sounds of beautiful music,” read the post. “But it was people — those he just met and those he knew for decades — who kept his mind and heart forever young. As we celebrate his legacy and reflect on the next chapter of life without him, we would like to thank everyone for all the love and support.

Blumhouse’s feature take of video game Five Nights at Freddy’s is going theatrical day and date with Peacock on Oct. 27 this year. The pic will go wide.
This is the fourth Blumhouse movie to day and date with Universal’s streaming service after Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends, and Firestarter.
While arguments can be made that these movies’ domestic ticket sales were impacted by their availability in homes, Halloween Ends opened to $40M, then shorted out at $64M. Uni had bragging rights that the threequel scored a top Nielsen debut over its opening weekend of Oct. 14-16 with 717 million minutes viewed.
Halloween Kills grossed $92M stateside after a $49.4M opening. Both Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends were under the pre-pandemic domestic grosses of the first 2018 reboot. Firestarter flamed out at the box office, making only $9.7M U.S./Canada, $15M WW.

Roger Ebert once wrote, “just because something is not done anymore doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing,” when describing Norman Jewison’s irrepressible romantic comedy “Only You.” This same sentiment can be applied to Angus MacLachlan’s latest family dramedy, “A Little Prayer,” a welcome throwback to adult-oriented movie fare of yore like “On Golden Pond,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” or “Passion Fish.

Kathy Bates is most famous for her role as an unhinged, obsessed fan in "Misery," which won her an Academy Award, but the actress has portrayed many memorable characters in unforgettable films. She is the bored Southern housewife Evelyn Couch in "Fried Green Tomatoes," the boisterous "Unsinkable" Molly Brown in "Titanic," and the prim and proper Mrs. Givings in "Revolutionary Road." For the first three decades of her career, Bates stuck to serious roles, explored complex characters, and proved herself to be an immeasurable talent.
Bates always nails dramatic performances and runs away with any scene she graces. Many actors would've stuck to the familiar, and continued to run with their established and celebrated talents, but Bates didn't. In 1998, she took a huge step out of her comfort zone, and co-starred in the Adam Sandler comedy "The Waterboy." It was a huge step for the actress, who told Vanity Fair...

Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

"Misery" was Kathy Bates' first big film. Rob Reiner's adaptation of the hit Stephen King novel came in 1990, early on in Bates' five-decade career. "Misery" would precede "Fried Green Tomatoes," King adaptation "Dolores Claiborne," "Titanic," and other films she'd become known for; arguably, her recent five-year run (in various roles) on Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's "American Horror Story" series has become the genre work she's best known for. But before all of that, she took on the role of one of cinema's greatest villainesses since Nurse Ratched.

The fight for women to be recognized for their directorial achievements stretches back for decades, but, too often, the screenwriters aren’t given that same spotlight. However, this year presents a unique situation where female filmmakers have also penned the top awards contenders for adapted screenplay. These leading contenders include Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”), Rebecca Hall (“Passing”) and Siân Heder (“Coda”).
If three of the writer-directors are nominated for best adapted screenplay, it’ll be the most female-written films recognized since 1991, which included “Europa Europa” (Agnieszka Holland), “Fried Green Tomatoes” (Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski) and “The Prince of Tides”. If all four manage to receive noms, it would be the most in Academy history, as well as the most that have been directed by women.
Three of the women were recognized by the USC Scripter Awards, whose previous nominees have a solid translation to Academy attention.

As predicted, Lois Smith won the Tony Award for Featured Actress in a Play for her moving turn in Matthew Lopez’s “The Inheritance.” Not only is this the veteran actress’ first career Tony win, but Smith has just become the oldest Tony winning actor in history. Talk about a victory being worth the wait!
Lois Smith is 90 years of age, having been born on November 3, 1930. This makes her two years older than the previous record holder for oldest Tony winning performer. That would be Cicely Tyson, who won a Tony for playing Carrie Watts in the 2018 revival of “The Trip To Bountiful” at age 88. That was Tyson’s only Tony nomination and win of her career, despite appearing in nine Broadway plays. Ironically, Smith also portrayed Carrie in a 2005 Off-Broadway revival of “Bountiful.” She won the Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Obie, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for that performance.
Lois Smith is 90 years of age, having been born on November 3, 1930. This makes her two years older than the previous record holder for oldest Tony winning performer. There isn’t too much drama but there is plenty of warm group atmosphere in “Dramarama,” the autobiographical first feature from writer-director Jonathan Wysocki that’s set in 1994 at a last gathering between high-school friends.
The religious background of these teens means “Dramarama” is treading in the footsteps of Stephen Cone, whose own movies in this sort of milieu, including “The Wise Kids” and “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party,” set a patiently humanistic and non-judgmental tone that Wysocki’s film follows to a certain extent, but with a far faster pace.
“Dramarama” begins with a slight misstep as it introduces its protagonist, Gene (Nick Pugliese), flexing in front of a mirror in his bedroom and then reacting with distaste to the sound of his mother’s voice outside the door as she asks him if he is going to church. Wysocki has Pugliese stare straight into the camera after Gene dismisses his mother for us,...

In honor of their lifetime of achievements, Spelman College will name a renovated theater, lobby, dressing rooms and supporting areas the Latanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center.
Located in the John D. Rockefeller Fine Arts Building, the updated arts center is being made possible by a lead gift from the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation along with generous donations from Richardson Jackson and Jackson, Bank of America and David Rockefeller Jr.
At the height of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, actress-producer-director Latanya Richardson Jackson, C’71, was honing her significant talents on the stage of the Baldwin Burroughs Theatre in Spelman’s John D. Rockefeller Fine Arts Building. She performed, alongside then Morehouse College student, Samuel Jackson, as a member of the Morehouse Spelman Players in productions like “The Sale” by Pearl Cleage, C’71. It was thirty years ago, on Valentine’s Day. A love affair with Oscar was about to begin. The psychological thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” opened in movie theaters to widespread critical acclaim. Based on the novel by Thomas Harris and starring 1988’s Best Actress Jodie Foster (“The Accused”) and Anthony Hopkins, the film knocked another spine-chiller (the Julia Roberts headlined “Sleeping with the Enemy”) off the top of the American box office chart. “Silence” would remain there for an impressive five weeks, grossing more than $130 million domestically and just over $270 million worldwide.
While the film pulled off the rare feat of pleasing both movie reviewers and regulars, it was initially seen as a wild card as an Oscar contender. After all, it was released before the 63rd Academy Awards (celebrating the best work of 1990) were even presented. Would “Silence” still resonate a year later? And then there was...
