While it may feel like The Hunger Games franchise just arrived on Netflix, it will be leaving the streamer at the end of the month. On May 31, all of the films in The Hunger Games franchise will be removed from Netflix. But that fate awaits more movies than that. Here are 8 other movies you might want to watch before the end of the month, before they're gone from your subscription.

Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.
Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

Mark and Valentina are dealing with financial problems. Those problems are about to get a lot worse, as instead of the raise he was expecting, Mark gets a pink slip. Cord Jefferson wants to tell a quick story. It involves something that happened to a friend of his, although the writer-director of American Fiction is quick to point out that the incident in question could have easily happened to any number of Black creatives he knows, or for that matter, himself. This friend was an aspiring screenwriter who took a meeting with studio executives. They asked her what she was interested in doing. I want to write a rom-com, she answered. Maybe an erotic thriller. Great, they said. Love it.

Stars including Natalie Portman, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Lupita Nyong’o and Selena Gomez walked the red and pink carpet that ran from the entrance and led underneath the museum’s Sphere building. Many of the stars making an appearance have films that are looking to be top contenders in the Oscar race; the benefit has become, for many, a must-do pit stop along the awards circuit.
The evening — the third annual benefit for the movie museum, where current exhibits spotlight the works of director John Waters and Lourdes Portillo as well as the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood — honored four luminaries of the entertainment industry: Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Coppola.

Zack Snyder’s latest big-budget effects-driven feature, an awards contender from Todd Haynes, Bradley Cooper’s sensitive portrayal of an American icon, a beloved follow-up to an Aardman classic and the conclusion of The Crown are some of the highlights of a jam-packed December schedule on Netflix.
Haynes’ drama May December debuts on Netflix on Dec. 1. Loosely inspired by the story of Mary Kay Letourneau, the film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, is led by A-listers Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore and also stars Charles Melton, who was named best supporting actor by New York critics this week.
Sam Esmail’s feature Leave the World Behind is another heavyweight addition to Netflix in December. It’s not homework, it’s “American Fiction.”
At first glance, writer-director Cord Jefferson’s satire about the exploitation of Black people in media might seem like another “message” movie offering difficult conversations around politics and race. Well, it is that — but it’s also funny. So funny, it just might be this year’s Oscar best picture winner.
Jefferson’s MGM-distributed debut is taking the festival circuit by storm. Since its world premiere at Toronto, where it won the People’s Choice Award — an Oscar bellwether — the film has also tacked on audience awards from regional festivals Mill Valley and Middleburg. The last two movies to win those three prizes were “Belfast” (2021) and “Green Book” (2018); both were Oscar nominated, and the latter took home best picture.

There were classic Gen X movies before 1994, but none of these films came close to capturing the pop-culture mad, video-store zeitgeist of this cohort like Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction." The precociously talented writer-director appropriated the tough-talking, cold-around-the-heart aesthetic of classic crime fiction and made his killers talk like twentysomethings waxing stoned on cinema, music and syndicated television shows. Tarantino hit a sweet spot most moviegoers didn't know they possessed, and like anyone who catches the highest of highs, they wanted more of what he was pushing.
Almost 30 years later, Tarantino has refused to give his fans what they think they want -- which is odd since he's the one who's filled their heads with the potential of sequels and spinoffs to his first two movies. But Tarantino, who has worked steadily if not prolifically over 31 years (nine movies with his tenth and apparently final feature coming in "The Movie Critic...

The Venice and Telluride film festivals are kicking off Oscar season this week, which means the good stuff is finally on its way. Unfortunately, the streaming offerings over Labor Day weekend aren’t particularly robust. But there are a few titles worth checking out as summer fades away.
The contender to watch this week: “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
The first three “Indiana Jones” movies earned a collective 13 Oscar nominations, and while the franchise’s long-gestating final installment saw lukewarm reception, it could still be a below-the-line contender — especially with fall blockbusters like “Dune: Part Two” being delayed to 2024. Anytime John Williams‘ name appears in the credits, there are awards chances in the offing. Catch Harrison Ford‘s Indy swan song on VOD. It’ll stream on Disney+ later this year.
Other contenders to watch:

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.

Angela Bassett once again played The Sovereign Queen Ramonda in the sequel to 2018’s “Black Panther.” It was the first superhero movie to ever earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, while also winning for its score, production design and costumes. We have seen many films dealing with the trials and tribulations of families dealing with gang warfare and talent going to waste due to it. Clement Virgo’s Brother may remind one of Boyz n the Hood, but the way it unfolds makes it a broader study on grief and how violence and prejudice fuse themselves with a person’s cultural identity, even if they try to fight hard against it. 2023 film, Brother also functions as a coming-of-age drama, where the younger brother grew up in the shadow of the elder one, and once he departed, he had to find his own way into an unjust world.
Brother is a gut-wrenching film, and editor Kye Meechan has to be mentioned because of how he has chronicled the entire film, moving back and forth in the timeline, bringing to the forefront the stark contrast between how somebody is before and how...

On the surface, the whimsy of Pee-wee’s Playhouse appears to be worlds apart from the solemnity of Boyz N the Hood, other than the curious resemblance between Cowboy Curtis and Furious Styles. But it’s no coincidence that Laurence Fishburne and other key creatives were part of both projects.
As a USC film student in the late 1980s, John Singleton spent one summer working as a security guard-slash-production assistant on the set of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. “John was the lowest of lowly PAs,” recalled Fishburne on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995. “He was working on the door and his job was to stop people at the door and go, ‘Are you supposed to be here? Do you have the proper ID?’”
Singleton would press Fishburne for stories of working with Spike Lee, as the actor had appeared in School Daze a few months prior. The budding filmmaker...

A Compassionate Spy (Steve James)
See an exclusive clip above.
The latest film from acclaimed documentarian Steve James, A Compassionate Spy, comes with a fascinating subject: the spy who leaked nuclear information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union, therefore ensuring that America could not establish a nuclear monopoly on the world. It’s easy to see why James would be drawn to the spy, Theodore “Ted” Hall, and his wife Joan as he has often been interested in using individuals as the framework to explore larger societal issues. Utilizing a hybrid of recreations, archival footage, and modern-day interviews, James crafts a portrait of a man, a relationship, and the sheer weight of the decision to betray your country to save the world.

The late, great Paul Reubens didn't just bring his chipper, friendly, well-dressed character Pee-wee Herman to television with "Pee-wee's Playhouse." He also brought total anarchy. In a children's television landscape dominated by poorly disguised toy commercials and wholesome live-action hosts, "Pee-wee's Playhouse" was a loud, chaotic, unapologetically strange (and sometimes controversial) TV series where anything can and, usually, did happen.
Hosted by Reubens, every episode featured Pee-wee Herman — decked out in a (let's be honest here) pretty stylish grey tailored suit and a little red bowtie — interacting with his anthropomorphic furniture, getting his wishes granted by strange deities, and getting visited by a cavalcade of friends. But these friends weren't the normal human beings who lived next door to Pee-wee in the hit film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," who loved him or hated him, but never shared his kookiness. "Pee-wee's Playhouse" was populated by lovable goofballs just like Pee-wee himself,...

Angela Bassett may have gone home empty handed at the Oscars in March, but the two-time nominee will be getting a golden statuette this year after all – and in very good company too.
