Much ink has been spilled on the return of the so-called “last movie star” in one Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, leaping back onto the silver screen this past weekend in the long-awaited insta-blockbuster navy recruitment video Top Gun: Maverick. While the 59-year-old does seem to be one of the world’s last stars who can reliably “open” a certain strain of picture, recent evidence points to the fact that there are other impossibly good-looking people out there that audiences still want to see, whether or not they’re wearing superhero tights, beyond Jerry Maguire. One week into its theatrical run, Maverick is already a smash. The flick broke domestic records for both all-time Memorial Day opening weekends — unadjusted for inflation (160.5 million) — and Tom Cruise three-day opening weekends. After just one week, the high-flying Jerry Bruckheimer-produced action sequel has already made 330.6 million at the international box office. Though the second...

My name is Joe Bel Bruno, and I’m addicted to the news. CNN has been my habit of choice.
Lockdowns during the pandemic gave news junkies exactly what we needed — constant access to the relentless pace of 2020’s turbulent events — Covid breakouts, the George Floyd shooting, Black Lives Matter protests, and the presidential election. The dramatic theme music played before a “Breaking News” banner splashed across the screen was intoxicating for folks like us.
It came time to cut back when watching that much CNN programming gave me a sixth sense into exact phrases Dana Bash would use to frame a position and what color tie Don Lemon will wear the next night. Not to mention, a worried friend even told me it’s time to cut back. The network basically trained me as a viewer what to expect, the cadence of shows, and how to consume their reports.

Screen Producers Australia (Spa) has announced the program for next month’s Screen Forever conference, which will be held entirely online.
Comprising 40 sessions and 120 speakers across three days, the event will feature three ‘tracks’ designed to help delegates customise their experience.
Spa CEO Matthew Deaner, who announced the digital-only format last week, says the schedule should provide ample opportunity for industry to reconnect and fuel business momentum.
“After such an unprecedented year I am proud to launch the program for our conference’s 35th iteration, bringing together creative workers from all stages of the production life cycle to further the reach of Australian stories and dissect the issues we collectively face in a post-pandemic era.”
Of the three tracks that make up the conference, ‘Business’ will include representatives from the ABC, Sbs, Seven, 10, Stan, Netflix, Amazon, and Discovery assembling for a Meet the Buyers session.

“It’s just that jazz ain’t cool anymore,” the sexy saxophonist is told in the new Amazon Prime dramatic feature “Sylvie’s Love.”
But Viola Davis’ title character in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” disagrees: “Blues helps you get out of bed in the morning.”
Who would have thought that one of the notable trends in filmed entertainment at this time would be an American art form born more than 120 years ago? Amid the stalled and rearranged film landscape of 2020, just as the Black Lives Matter movement re-emerged as a cultural force, numerous film and TV projects are celebrating jazz, blues and other music associated with the Black experience, and its historically challenging path to full respect.
“Sadly, these projects remain timelessly relevant,” said James Erskine, director of the new documentary, “Billie,” about legendary jazz and blues singer Billie Holiday.

In a filmmaking career that spans nearly four decades, Joel and Ethan Coen have made films that defy genre classification but always maintain their distinctive humor and realist point of view. From cult comedies like “Raising Arizona” (1987) and “The Big Lebowski” (1998) to Oscar winners “Fargo” (1996) and “No Country for Old Men” (2007), the Coen brothers have become one of the defining voices of contemporary American cinema. In “The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together,” film critic Adam Nayman weaves biography, critical analysis, and interviews with Coen collaborators (including longtime cinematographer Roger Deakins) to present the definitive history of the Coen brothers oeuvre.
Published by Abrams Books in conjunction with the film magazine “Little White Lies,” “The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together” will be released on September 11, 2018. IndieWire has obtained an exclusive excerpt about the making of “Burn After Reading” (2008), as well as key art from the book.

Welcome to almost-summer! That means it’s time to think summer reading. Fans of cinema will find plenty of recent gems to read here, along with some bonus novels, a visual feast for Beatles junkies, and a Blu-ray release of one of David Lynch’s most fascinatingly divisive films. Let’s start with a new look at films based on the work of the horror maestro of Bangor, Maine.
Screening Stephen King: Adaptation and the Horror Genre in Film and Television by Simon Brown (University of Texas Press)
It is high time we had a serious examination of the many film adaptations of Stephen King’s novels. In Screening Stephen King, Simon Brown offers deep analysis of not just the obvious choices like Carrie but low-budget fare like Children of the Corn and The Mangler. Especially fascinating is his study of the several ABC-tv miniseries of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The Dark Knight in various articles here at The Big Picture. In our ongoing discussions of what will likely become one of the biggest movies of all time, a lot of our readers have turned their attention to the next Batman movie, so we thought we'd ask for some more opinions on this subject: Who's next?
Because Batman has a 70-year history and because he can't fight The Joker and The Riddler all the time, he has made a lot of enemies in his various incarnations. One list I saw counts 136 Batman villains, and there may even be more. Since they won't make enough movies to cover them all, not that all them belong on screen, let's see if we can pick the right one(s) for the third installment. After all, Christian Bale said he'd love to be back...if Christopher Nolan is back on board. I don't know...
