25 years ago The Sci-Fi channel (SyFy these days) brought onto the airwaves a series unlike any ever seen before. Farscape took the idea of weird and ran with it in a universe filled with the bizarre, the beautiful, and both at the same time.
Created by Rockne S. O’Bannon, the man behind Alien Nation, Farscape introduced viewers to creatures and aliens of all different shapes and sizes. Some of them were people and others were beyond anything we could imagine. And we all saw it and experienced it alongside lost astronaut and scientist John Crichton, played by Ben Browder. Crichton was the only Actual human around and was the perfect stand in for the rest of us.
The series would be brought to life by the Jim Henson Creature Shop under the eye of Brian Henson (who we interviewed yesterday). The shop would create and design various aliens that were both puppet and person…...

In the feature film “Alien Nation”, Earth makes contact with an alien civilization, known as ‘Newcomers’, who for better or worse, are slowly integrated into human society:
Genetically engineered and designed for any work environment, the ‘Tenctonese’, aka ‘Newcomers’, are from planet ‘Tencton’, easily distinguished from humans by their hairless, spotted heads.
More than a quarter of a million Tenctonese reside on Earth in the US specifically the Los Angeles area. Tenctonese are taken from their parents as children at the age of ten and tasks are allotted to them.
Some of these children are chosen to be ‘Overseers’ and are specially conditioned. There are several levels of Overseers, from lowly civilian slave group leaders in charge of the procurement and transport of slaves, to commanders of military vessels.

The close-knit "Star Trek" family has lost one of their own today. Actor Gary Graham, most well-known for playing the role of the Vulcan Ambassador Soval in "Star Trek: Enterprise," sadly passed away early in the morning January 23, 2024. His death was first announced in a Facebook post by his ex-wife and actor Susan Lavelle (viaParade.com). No cause of death has yet been revealed, except that it was described as "sudden." Graham was 73 years old.
In addition to starring in "Enterprise" and even showing up for a brief appearance in "Star Trek: Voyager," Graham was more than willing to lend his talents to various roles in "Star Trek" fan films throughout the years, bringing Soval back to life in several unofficial movies that may not be formally sanctioned in the official canon of the franchise, but nonetheless speaks to the actor's passion for the character and his appreciation for the Trekkie community.

Every single person knows the sting of their favorite TV show getting canceled but it’s only gotten worse in recent years. The streaming era has been incredibly inconsistent. With an algorithm choosing the fates of shows, these days you’re lucky if a show gets ten episodes, let alone released at all. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was canceled by Netflix after a single season. Willow was not only canned by Disney+ after one season but also removed from its catalog. The same thing happened with Gordita Chronicles on HBO Max.
Streaming services like Netflix, once known for picking up canceled shows such as Arrested Development and giving creatives limitless freedom are now more known for not giving anything a chance unless it’s a massive Squid Game like success. Before word of mouth even spreads about a show, you often find out it’s canceled or removed entirely.

Here at /Film, we have talked quite a bit about how much we love genre-specific streaming services like Shudder or Alter, but does such a platform exist for fans of science fiction? Sure, there's always the Syfy channel on cable, but with so many people cutting cords and pivoting exclusively to streaming, you may be wondering where to find new and unique sci-fi stories. Well, may we interest you in Dust? A sister site of Alter, Dust comes from the folks at Gunpowder and Sky, the independent studio behind hits like "Summer of 84," "Tragedy Girls," "Her Smell," "Hearts Beat Loud," "Call Me Miss Cleo," and "Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball."
A hub for the very best in sci-fi short films, Dust also has a live linear channel constantly playing from their selection of shorts, so if you don't feel like wading through the selections, you can let the service choose for you.

Jeff Nichols was just at the Telluride Film Festival last weekend for the world premiere of his upcoming film, “The Bikeriders.” And while he was there, the director hopped on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to talk about his new movie, failed pitches for projects like “Aquaman,” and other topics. That includes “Alien Nation,” a long-gestating project of Nichols’ that never panned out (and is the reason for seven years between “The Bikeriders” and 2016’s “Loving” and “Midnight Special“) but came closer to being made than anyone realizes.

Jeff Nichols is enjoying some love right now thanks to the acclaim for his latest, The Bikeriders at the Telluride Film Festival and spawning a sequel due out this December.

It's either a rite of passage ... or a war of attrition, depending on how you look at it. If you're an acclaimed filmmaker who has typically made original movies at a mid-sized budget with adult audiences in mind -- in other words, exactly the type of movie that has been largely done away with and completely subsumed by the superhero blockbuster craze -- then you're inevitably going to be asked about making one of those superhero blockbusters. But every so often, those talented artists actually are interested enough to put some serious thought into their own personal pitch and, in this case, Jeff Nichols might as well have sent those Warner Bros. executives running for the hills.
As we recently saw with the trailer debut for "The Bikeriders," the marketing for Nichols' next buzzy project has finally begun in earnest and that means we're set for the director of well-received movies like "Shotgun Stories,...

Jeff Nichols didn’t waste time treading water when it came to his “Aquaman” pitch to Warner Bros.
Back in 2014, Nichols was approached to helm the Dcu installment after his success on indie films “Take Shelter” and “Mud.” However, according to Nichols, his concept for “Aquaman” was not “ever feasible” due to its darker storylines.

This week saw the release of the trailer for The Bikeriders. The new biker drama comes from Jeff Nichols, whose credits include heavy indies like Mud and Take Shelter. In the famed Sony email hack of 2014, it was revealed that before hiring James Wan, Warner Bros. had been in talks with Nichols for helming the Jason Momoa Aquaman solo film. Wan’s vision proved to be a successful one, as the 2018 Aquaman film would gross $1.1 billion globally. However, Nichols, a veteran of dark character drama, reveals what his own vision entailed.

Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, races into theaters on Dec. 1, following a splashy debut last week at Telluride. And you can watch a brand-new trailer right now (above), to get your engine properly revved.
Based on a 1968 photo book of the same name by Danny Lyon, “The Bikeriders” is told from the point of view of Kathy (Comer), a member of a ‘60s motorcycle gang who marries a handsome new member named Benny (Butler). As the nature of the motorcycle gang changes, so too does Benny’s relationship with the group’s volatile leader Johnny (Hardy). Bursts of violence, great pompadours and tons of cool leather jackets. What more could you want?
This is, incredibly, Nichols’ first movie since his 2016 back-to-back triumphs – sci-fi chase movie “Midnight Special” and his Oscar-nominated historical drama “Loving.” For a long time Nichols was developing a new take on “Alien Nation,...

The YouTuber movie is one that's often been considered very specific. Usually, they are comedies that star and/or are made by a YouTube content creator specifically to appease their fanbase. None of these are what you can consider future Oscar contenders, but as long as they succeed in satisfying their target audience, they'll be perfectly fine. Right?
If the history of these movies is anything to go by though, a ton of YouTuber movies aren't particularly successful in winning this niche fanbase, let alone general audiences. In a way, it almost seems like the sheer amount of terrible movies with a YouTuber's name on them has set back one of YouTube's primary appeals in the first place. This is, of course, the platform's unique ability to allow creatives to find a platform for their work, eventually building up to bigger projects.

This is, of course, the platform's unique ability to allow creatives to find a platform for their work, eventually building up to bigger projects.
However, the idea of the successful YouTuber creative...

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

It's nearly fall, but the spooky season is already here. Stir-crazed masses battling a lingering pandemic, climate change, and upheaval are pulling out the seasonal decor earlier, eager to change the vibe and settle into the oddly comforting world of the strange and the morbid. Over the coming weeks, theaters across North America will oblige and showcase an "X" prequel, a star-studded Olivia Wilde-directed thriller, the exceedingly creepy-looking psych-thriller "Smile," and Zach Cregger's rental home hellscape "Barbarian." As folks will start to pull out their sweaters and add a little pumpkin to their coffee, and they'll be in need of some at-home entertainment to match the oncoming autumn mood. For horror fans, the fall equinox (and the entire month that precedes it) is prime time, when the programming powers-that-be start adding a little more genre spice to their offerings in anticipation of Halloween.

In 1979, Stephen King was in New York for an appearance on a late-night talk show. Greeted by fans outside the studio, one man, claiming to be the author's "Number One Fan," wanted a polaroid photo with his idol instead. King was in a hurry so he relented to the request and signed the picture. The name the man gave was Mark Chapman.
Later, King couldn't say for certain whether it was the same Mark Chapman who shot John Lennon just a few hours after getting his autograph, but the incident unnerved the author. He already had a somewhat ambivalent towards his more ardent fans (via Washington Post):
"You look in their eyes, and it's like looking into vacant houses. They don't know why they want autographs. They just want them. And then you realize, not only is this house vacant, but it's haunted."

Director Neill Blomkamp’s first feature film debut, “District 9,” the Johannesburg-set sci-fi, action pic was a bonafide banger. The sci-fi film took a dark theme like South Africa’s apartheid, and segregation and applied it to aliens. Sharing some DNA with the 1988 film “Alien Nation,” the film used non-humanoid aliens to establish drastic differences between the two populations. A rather large swing, the bold choices earned “District 9” four Oscar nominations in 2010, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

A rather amusing headline in a 2008 issue of The Onion read "Some Old Man Still Churning Out Marmaduke." The joke of the article was that Brad Anderson, then 83, the creator of the long-running dog-centric newspaper strip, was toiling away at his 20,000th monotonous "Marmaduke" comic in complete obscurity. Despite being a staple of the funny papers since 1953, much of Marmaduke's audience had long since ceased paying attention. Incidentally, Anderson continued to draw "Marmaduke" until his death in 2015 at the age of 91. The strip continues under the eye of Paul Anderson, his son.
Matt Groening's "The Simpsons" is — a more cynical critic might say — slowly approaching "Marmaduke" levels of tedium. There are now 34 seasons of "The Simpsons" to contend with, translating to 728 episodes, with more on the way. Evidently the show is hoping to live up to the promise made in "Three Men and a Comic Book" wherein Bart (Nancy Cartwright) announced "Quality,...

I’m beginning to think this Satan character holds a grudge, you know? He tries to take over the world with his kid Damien in The Omen (1976)? A bust. Teenage Damien takes another run at it in Damien Omen II (1978) and survives, but daddy is nowhere to be seen. Deadbeat. So here we are with The Final Conflict (1981), Damien grown up and preparing the throne for pa, but this time, God’s got his own present to deliver. “When does the Devil get a break?” and other burning questions are answered in this low-key yet overall effective finale. (If only temporary.)
Released by 20th Century Fox in North America in late March, The Final Conflict rolled out to the rest of the world shortly thereafter, and made its money back despite less than glowing reviews. And while some of the complaints are valid -- it doesn’t really have that...

Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. That’s about one-tenth of the Hollywood blockbusters it’s competing with. Can it hold its own against the competition, or is resistance to the Disney Empire futile?

The new Syfy dramedy Resident Alien seems like it ought to be a very simple show. Perhaps in a good way.
The title is, of course, a play on legal terminology referring to lawfully registered immigrants residing in the country. Make that alien a literal extraterrestrial and you have a really clean premise for a show, one that isn’t exactly revolutionary. From Roswell to V to Alien Nation to Alf to The Neighbors, the alien-as-immigrant allegory is familiar and resilient stuff.
Why, then, does Resident Alien make it look so darned complicated? Even with Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse’s Dark Horse comic as source material,...

There have been rumblings of a big-screen remake of Alien Nation for a number of years, and the project has been in the hands of Jeff Nichols (Loving) for just as long. Jeff Nichols’ plans for an “Alien Nation” remake fell apart following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, but the project may find new life as a television series.
Nichols discussed his “Alien Nation” plans during a recent interview on the Team Deakins podcast, where he stated he was working on adapting the 1991 sci-fi film into a 10-episode television show. Nichols noted that he was approached by Fox to remake the film but said Disney killed the project in 2019 after the company acquired the competing studio.

Back in 2016, it was reported that Fox had tapped “Take Shelter” director Jeff Nichols to remake the 1988 sci-fi neo-noir buddy cop film “Alien Nation” which starred James Caan, Mandy Patinkin and Terence Stamp and told the story of a veteran cop and the first extraterrestrial cop working in L.A. Sadly, the project became one of many victims of the Disney acquisition of Fox.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! Joining us this month is Tarik Davis, a writer and actor whose work stretches across media platforms, from film and television to online content and even stage productions. He’s currently featured on Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, where his horror sensibilities can’t help but peek through from time to time. Horror fans should also check him out in the short film Page One, the Stakes is High essay series that he wrote to explore hate and fascism through the lens of vampire films, and his video "Your 21st Century Woke Horror Host: Addison Hadley."
Given Davis’ eclectic mix of horror and sci-fi inspirations, I was excited when he recommended Jack Sholder’s 1987 film, The Hidden. I’ve had The Hidden on my radar ever since I heard it described as a better version of Jason Goes to Hell,...

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures is broadening its A Quiet Place franchise. The studio has set Jeff Nichols to write and direct the third film, which is based on an original idea by John Kraskinski. Studio has set a 2022 release date. Krasinski co-wrote and directed the original, and wrote and directed the sequel, which was pushed from its March 20 release date by the Covid lockdown, with Paramount slating it for an April 23, 2021 release.
They are keeping details of the new plot under wraps, but I would not be surprised if this was not a straight sequel, but rather broadened the world that the original introduced, plopping viewers in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors are struggling to stay alive by being quiet, as monsters with ultra sensitive hearing hunt them. The movie progressed so quickly you barely had time to ask how the world got that way, and whether the creatures might be defeated.

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

Jeff Nichols is reuniting with a handful of his most acclaimed actors for a new family podcast based on John R. Erickson’s children’s book series “Hank the Cowdog.” Tri-State Pictures, Htc Productions, and Qcode have partnered up for the “Hank the Cowdog” podcast, which Nichols wrote, directed, and executive produced. Nichols’ “Mud” actor Matthew McConaughey is voicing Hank and also serving as executive producer. Erickson’s book series has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Nichols’ podcast adaptation will run five episodes and launch later this month.
The official “Hank the Cowdog” podcast synopsis reads: “Hank the Cowdog, the self-declared ‘Head of Ranch Security,’ finds himself smack dab in the middle of a host of tangled mysteries and capers that span the universe of the Texas Panhandle cattle ranch Hank calls home. Hank is joined on these tail-wagging, tongue-slobbering adventures by a motley assemblage of characters, not least of...

Season 2 of His Dark Materials will feature the talents of someone who’s been Superman’s (kinda) dad and also one of his greatest enemies.
Terrence Stamp, who voiced Jor-El in Smallville and played General Zod in the Superman films, has signed on to portray Giacomo Paradisi in the HBO series. As readers of Philip Pullman’s book trilogy know, Paradisi shows up in the novel series’ second installment, The Subtle Knife, as the onetime bearer of the titular weapon.

While it’s been a few years since we’ve heard from the Arkansas-born director, he’s now finally returning with his sixth feature.
Variety reports he’ll be reteaming with his Midnight Special star Adam Driver for Yankee Comandante. Based on a 2012 New Yorker article by David Grann (author of the source material for James Gray’s The Lost City of Z and Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming Killers of the Flower Moon), the story follows the two people who rose to the rank of comandante during the Cuban Revolution, one being Che Guevara and the other William Alexander Morgan, a man from Ohio, who Driver will presumably play.
