Many people would claim that Frank Darabont has made the best Stephen King adaptations ever put on film, but did you know that over a decade before making The Shawshank Redemption, it would be Stephen King himself who helped Frank Darabont become a filmmaker? Frank would use one of Stephen King’s infamous “Dollar Babies” where King would allow aspiring filmmakers to license one of his short stories for just $1. Darabont would adapt King’s short The Woman in the Room which would be short-listed for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short film in 1983. Despite not getting the nomination, and not even particularly liking the short, King was a fan and for $5,000, granted Darabont the rights to adapt another of his short stories: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
Of course, Darabont wasn’t quite ready to tackle something as massive as that story just yet, so he made...

Film industry cynics may take one look at a newly announced low-budget comedy called Barbenheimer and a poster that uses Barbie’s iconic pink font over a picture of a nuclear explosion and features the tagline “D-Cup, A-Bomb,” and immediately assume it’s simply a shameless attempt to cash in on a very recent cultural phenomenon. And those cynics would be absolutely correct, says Charles Band, the prolific B-movie icon who has been making low-budget horror comedies since the early 1970s.
“It’s 100 percent true,” he says. “But it’s also an opportunity to have fun with the bizarre coupling of these two movies and the combination of Barbie’s vibe and the darkness of Oppenheimer. You mix that together and you have such an opportunity for dark humor.”
Barbenheimer, selling at the American Film Market (where else?) with Amp, follows Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer, a brilliant scientist doll living in Dolltopia,...

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" were meant to be counter-programming for each other. They both opened in theaters on July 21, 2023, and one can practically hear the studio executives at both Universal and Warner Bros. positing that a younger audience would be dropped off to see the PG-13-rated "Barbie" while adults would sidle into the theater next door to watch "Oppenheimer." What no one seemed to predict was that there was a great deal of overlap between the two films' intended audiences, and a grassroots campaign began to see the two pictures as the ultimate double feature. The phenomenon nicknamed Barbenheimer began. Any number of unauthorized Barbenheimer T-shirts can be purchased online, and many managed to see both films on the same weekend. Rather than siphoning money from one another, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" buoyed each other, each one adding to the other's success. Both films are...

The Full Moon library also includes films like The Tourist Trap, Castle Freak, Baby Oopsie, Evil Bong, and SubSpecies. In addition to the company’s back catalog, Amp will also represent Full Moon’s latest productions, starting with Aimee: The Visitor. JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek recently had the chance to interview one of my favorite people in the entertainment business, Full Moon founder Charles Band, about his upcoming release The Primevals – and during their conversation, Band happened to mention a potential project that really captured my imagination. If all goes well, Full Moon will be teaming with a major streaming service to revive the Trancers franchise as a TV series!
Band told Lance, “We have a couple of really interesting possible reboot deals brewing. Now, of course, everything’s slowed down or stopped because of the writers strike and the SAG strike, but in time they’ll turn around, and it will be nice to see some of these movies like Trancers, which is one of them, get made – in the case of Trancers, into a really hopefully well-appointed series on one of the bigger streaming services.“

The Puppet Master episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Counting all sequels, prequels, spin-offs, crossovers, and even a Fangoria reboot, there are over a dozen entries in the Puppet Master franchise. Which can make the idea of diving into it rather intimidating. Especially since some of the films don’t have a stellar reputation. But while the series has ups and downs, there are some great entries. And its legion of living puppets – which can be villains or heroes, depending on who’s pulling their strings – are characters you have to see in action. Getting fired from Good Times is one of the best things that could have ever happened to John Amos.
After three seasons of fighting with executive producer Norman Lear and the CBS sitcom’s white writers about the stereotypical Black portrayals and dialogue the show perpetuated, particularly when it came to star Jimmie Walker, Amos’ contract to play patriarch James Evans wasn’t renewed at the end of Season 3 in 1976 and his character was killed off.

"This equipment is far superior to ours!" There's an object that appears in many sci-fi films from the 70s and 80s that really has no use, and just "looks cool" - it's known as "Blinking Tubes Without Function". (Read more about it here.) A YouTube channel has created a series of supercut videos with all the footage of these blinking red tubes from every TV show & film it appears in. The funniest thing about this is noticing how the exact same prop appears over and over, almost like they just wheel the thing around to different sets and some guy plugs it in and everyone goes "oh, wow." It's in everything from Star Trek (of course) to V to Knight Rider to Trancers to Airplane II, even in one Austin Powers. I'm glad it doesn't appear anymore, but I wonder if it's in the background of some sci-fi show? Maybe.

Happy (Good) Friday, everyone! Even though time isn’t much of a construct these days, the weekend is officially here and if you’re like me, you’re looking for ways to entertain yourself at home during this whole pandemic mess. And with the economy being what it is right now, I know it’s helpful for many folks out there to save money wherever you can, so I thought I would dive into all the great films over at Tubi TV to compile a list of more than 50 different cult films you can currently stream for free.
Just a note: there are a lot of definitions of “cult film,” so I did my best to not include a bunch of titles that horror fans throw around ad nauseam here, and I even opened up my search parameters a bit to include horror, sci-fi, and genre-adjacent titles that I feel...

Whether he was working as an actor, director, or makeup effects artist, John Carl Buechler brought a unique talent to every project he worked on over the decades, and it is with great sadness that we share the news that he has passed away at the age of 66.
Buechler passed away after a battle with Stage IV prostate cancer, as confirmed by the GoFundMe page that has been set up to raise much-needed funds for his medical costs.
When you talk about influential makeup effects artists from the last four decades, Buechler's name deserves to be mentioned at the top of the list. A practical effects guru, Buechler helped bring monsters and nightmares to life on screen in the heyday of practical effects, working on films such as Trancers, Halloween 4, TerrorVision, the first three Ghoulies films, and so many more projects that dazzled generations of horror fans.

Similar to the documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films, this film examines the story of producer Charles Band and the crappy D-movies he made back in the 1980s. Empire is most well known for making cult favorite genre films like Re-Animator, Ghoulies, Robot Jox, Trancers, and From Beyond, to name a few (any of these your favorites?). It's always fascinating to take a closer look at how films like this were made, especially considering they figured out how finance and find people to work on them. This trailer is mostly footage from their films, but I still dig it. Trailer for Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland: The Saga of Empire Pictures,...

Re-Animator. Puppetmaster. Trancers. Ghoulies. If you grew up in the '80s and '90s and had any interest in schlocky horror films, you've probably seen the aforementioned movies and a handful of others from Empire Pictures, the production company/studio run by Charles Band. The rise and fall of that company is now getting the documentary treatment in a film called Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland: The Saga of Empire Pictures, which is directed by Daniel Griffith. The project earned some of its money through Kickstarter, and unfortunately it doesn't have an official release date yet. Hopefully it'll at least be available to stream on Netflix sometime soon, because this looks like a great companion piece to docs like Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films and Not Quite Hollywood, which focused on Aussie exploitation films.

Di Bonaventura Pictures and Caliber Media are moving forward with Puppet Master: The Littles Reich, the first film in a planned reboot universe of the horror franchise. Bone Tomahawk writer/director S. Craig Zahler is set to pen the script for the latest Puppet Master film, which is teased in a new poster:

I completely missed out on the cult classic Puppet Master film franchise growing up, but knowing that it comes from the mind of B-movie maven Charles Band — the same guy behind movies like Trancers, Dollman vs. Demonic Toys, and The Gingerdead Man — tells me pretty much everything I need to know. The franchise contains eleven movies so far and has been dormant since 2012, but a press release just informed me that Bone Tomahawk writer/director S. Craig Zahler has come on board to write a new movie called Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich that's intended to kick off a new Puppet Master universe.
Charles Band is executive producing, while Bone Tomahawk's Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller will produce alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) and Mark Vahradian. No director has been hired yet.

I’ve always been obsessed with watching movies. From seeing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at the age of four at a Saturday matinee revival to today, the flickering shadow shows have filled my life. Consumed, I’m sure some would say. However, discerning fact from fiction has never been an issue, unlike Eric Binford, the hapless ‘hero’ of the eerie (and funny) Fade to Black (1980) – now here’s a kid with issues.
Written and directed by Vernon Zimmerman (The Unholy Rollers), Fade to Black was distributed by American Cinema Releasing on October 14th, 1980. The film bypassed audiences for the most part, but critics were generally pleased with the offbeat tone that it brought to the genre. If you love movies about movies, especially with a horror bent, Fade to Black is the film for you.

It is fair to say that Charles Band makes some interesting movies, most of them B-movies with a cult charm. As fans we love them for this very fact, whether it’s the brave move to just go for the fun instead of high quality drama, or sometimes and often more rarely actually being a surprisingly good movie. 88 Films are releasing one of these on Blu-ray in the form of Trancers, a movie that borrows a lot from Bladerunner but adds a time travelling concept that for its time was quite smart.
Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) was a Trancer hunter, until the day he decided to walk away from the job. When Whistler (Michael Stefani) travels back in time though...

This Tuesday, genre fans have a Lot to look forward to, as we have a trifecta of horror classics coming from Scream Factory, as well as the new 4K restoration of the 1920 German classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from Kino Lorber.
As if that’s not enough, Image Entertainment is releasing the Limited Edition Fifth Dimension box set for The Twilight Zone this week, the cult classics Moontrap, Christmas Evil and Trancers are all making their HD debuts and we’ve got a few indie films being released on November 18th too, including Automata, Housebound and Ragnarok.
Spotlight Titles:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari- 4K Restored (Kino Lorber, Blu-ray & DVD)
In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world.

We recently reported that the Mistress of the Dark is returning soon to host horror flicks in Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira. Now you can get a taste of the humor to come, as Hulu and Brainstorm Media have provided us with a clip in which Elvira offers witty remarks on 1985’s Trancers and Oscar winner Helen Hunt before imagining what she would say upon winning an Academy Award.
Cassandra Peterson stars as the legendary horror hostess on Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira, streaming exclusively on the site beginning October 19th and running through Halloween. Each night Elvira will introduce a fright film and offer occasional comedic commentary—a setup similar to her Movie Macabre performances. Here’s the official schedule:
Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death (1989) Sunday, Oct. 19 Puppet Master (1989) Monday, Oct. 20 Demonic Toys (1992) Tuesday, Oct. 21 Hobgoblins (1988) Wednesday, Oct. 22 The Gingerdead Man (2005) Thursday, Oct. 23 Dollman (1991) Friday, Oct.

The 1992 Full Moon flick Doctor Mordrid starring Jeffrey Combs was originally intended to be a Doctor Strange movie. Unfortunately, the rights reverted back to Marvel before Charles Band could get the film made.
With an actual Doctor Strange movie in the works, it seems fitting Band would give his pseudo-take on the character the Blu-ray treatment.
Re-Animator’s Jeffrey Combs dons his finest Doctor Strange lounge-wear to play enigmatic interdimensional sorcerer/New York landlord Dr. Anton Mordrid, sworn to protect our world by guarding the gates of the fourth dimension from his mortal enemy, the diabolical warlock Kabul (Brian Thompson, "The X-Files"), while also finding the time to for a little romance with a pretty police research consultant tenant (Yvette Nipar, “Robocop: The Series”).
When Band lost the rights to make a Doctor Strange movie, C. Courtney Joyner’s script was rewritten to create an entirely new supernatural superhero...

Released at the height of the straight to video techno-horror phase that rode in on the coat-tails of The Lawnmower Man and also saw the release of films such as Evolver and Brainscan, Arcade was, I think, unfairly overlooked, at least in the UK, at the time due to poor distribution, a lack of big-name stars (unlike Brainscan which had a post-T2 Edward Furlong, the biggest stars in Arcade were A Christmas Story’s Peter Billingsley and St:tng’s John De Lancie), and effects that – even though they were apparently redone after the film was completed – did not compare to other CGI-heavy films at the time.
