Demi Moore is using her juiciest leading role in years to make a statement against the sexism of Hollywood.
Moore stars in Coralie Fargeat’s body horror Hollywood satire “The Substance,” which premiered in competition at Cannes to rave reviews. The actress plays an aging star who acquires a mysterious serum that births a younger, more ideal version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. The two women are nude throughout the film, which shows the horrors of women going to extremes to preserve their self-image in Hollywood. Moore credited Qualley for being a “great partner” during a nude scene they share together.
“We were obviously quite close at some moments…and naked,” Moore said during the Cannes press conference (via The Hollywood Reporter). “But there was also a levity [in shooting those scenes].”
Moore explained that the gross-out horror feature, which debuted at Cannes Sunday night, undermines the “male perspective of the ideal woman” to a harrowing degree.

On the indie side of filmmaking life, Sean Price Williams has seen it all. He’s worked with the Safdies, Alex Ross Perry, Nathan Silver, Robert Green, and Athina Rachel Tsangari, and often more than once. He’s the premier chronicler of New York City independent movies behind the camera, typically shooting on celluloid, and bringing surreal, gritty poetry to character-driven stories that feel on the ground like portraits of versions of ourselves.
One of the most unabashedly movie-loving cinematographers working today, Williams last year moved to directing for the sprawling, scratchy-edged tale of East Coast youth, “The Sweet East,” which remains in theaters and features stars like Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Jeremy O. Harris, and Ayo Edebiri.
But even more recently than that directorial debut, he released a “1000 Movies” book via Metrograph Editions, a simple, unadorned paperback that offers, rather than commentary, pages listing his favorite essential films and...

Soon after the New Hollywood generation took over the entertainment industry, they started having children. And more than any filmmakers that came before—they were terrified. Rosemary’s Baby (1968), The Exorcist (1973), The Omen (1976), Eraserhead (1977), The Brood (1979), The Shining (1980), Possession (1981), and many others all deal, at least in part, with the fears of becoming or being a parent. What if my child turns out to be a monster? is corrupted by some evil force? or turns out to be the fucking Antichrist? What if I screw them up somehow, or can’t help them, or even go insane and try to kill them? Horror has always been at its best when exploring relatable fears through extreme circumstances. A prime example of this is Larry Cohen’s 1974 monster-baby movie It’s Alive, which explores the not only the rollercoaster of emotions that any parent experiences when confronted with the difficulties of raising a child,...

There’s something about a doppelganger that feels uniquely cinematic. A person who looks like you, thinks like you, and maybe even lives like you has always been a subject of fascination and dread in literature and philosophy, a concept that raises questions about individuality and the collective. But on the screen, seeing the effect of one person mimicked and duplicated proves all the more uncanny and unnerving. Science fiction, horror, and a multitude of other genres have used duality as a means to terrify, unsettle, and provoke.
And then, of course, there’s the acting challenge. For an experienced actor or an up-and-comer alike, playing dual roles is the ultimate flex, a way to show your range in a single project. Whether playing twins or identical strangers, an actor who takes on a dual role has to manage the trick of being both an individual and a duo, of...

Richard Donner’s The Omen begins June 6, at 6 am in Rome, with the birth of the Antichrist and his adoption into an affluent American family. Damien Thorn’s birth and subsequent reign of terror, preordained by franchise canon, make approaching a prequel to a heralded horror classic a daunting task. Director Arkasha Stevenson makes it look effortless with The First Omen, a masterclass in form matched by its compelling horror and characters.
The First Omen, set in 1971, follows American novitiate Margaret Daino (“Servant” star Nell Tiger Free) as she’s sent to Rome to work in an orphanage before she takes the veil. As Margaret adapts to not just her new vocation but an entirely new country and a city in the throes of unrest, she finds herself drawn to socially withdrawn orphan Carlita (Nicole Sorace). It’s through her bond with and concern for Carlita that Margaret notices something amiss within the convent.

Nell Tiger Free is a terrified nun who discovers a dark secret at the heart of the Catholic church. Here’s our The First Omen review.
After what felt like an eternity of no decent or exciting horror films, we’re incredibly lucky to have three land in our laps within a few weeks. We’ve already been impressed by Sydney Sweeney’s powerhouse performance in Immaculate and terrified silly by David Dastmalchian’s talk show horror with a satanic spin in Late Night With The Devil, but I doubt any of us expecting The First Omen, a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 film The Omen, to join those two as early favourites for the best horror films of 2024.
We’ve been burned many times with these prequels, reboots and sequels which heavily borrow from some of our favourite classic horror films. The Exorcist: Believer is still all too fresh in our minds…...

In what feels like a (brief) return of twin films — two movies with very similar plots released at the same time, like "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" — we now have "The First Omen" and "Immaculate" bringing Catholic horror and nunsploitation back to the big screen.
"The First Omen" takes us back to a sweet time in the '70s when everyone was obsessed with religious horror, thanks in no small part to the monumental success of "The Exorcist" and "Rosemary's Baby." The film is a prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 film "The Omen," about the coming of the Antichrist that also plays very much like a Catholic take on "Final Destination" — with photos that show the order and the gruesome manner in which several characters in the film will die.

‘The First Omen’ Director Arkasha Stevenson Says Classic Horror Franchise Has Plenty of Stories Left
In her feature directorial debut, The First Omen filmmaker Arkasha Stevenson has pulled off the delicate balance between homage and invention. Prequels are always tricky in this regard, but it’s especially difficult when it involves Richard Donner’s horror classic, The Omen (1976). Stevenson’s assignment, in conjunction with her co-writer and producer Tim Smith, was to tell the origin story of how Damien Thorn came into the world and who gave birth to the franchise’s indelible Antichrist character.
Set in 1971, Stevenson’s story begins with the arrival of novitiate Margaret Daino (Nell Tiger Free) at a Rome-based orphanage, and she soon discovers a sinister plot to birth the Antichrist in order for the Catholic Church to regain its grip on the counterculture society of the ’60s and ’70s. For the uninitiated moviegoers who catch The First Omen this weekend, Nell Tiger Free’s performance will be something of a revelation. For fans of M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant, her performance will further expand on what they saw for four seasons.
The English actor, who’s also known for memorable roles on Game of Thrones and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young, plays American novitiate Margaret Daino in Arkasha Stevenson’s prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 horror classic The Omen. The story centers around Margaret’s arrival at a Rome orphanage and her discovery of a wicked plot to spawn the antichrist. But as Free’s character dives deeper into the disturbing conspiracy, her own personal demons begin to resurface, leading to a scene that pays homage to Isabelle Adjani’s famous subway scene in Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession (1981).

Nell Tiger Free (“Servant”) finds herself embroiled in a terrifying conspiracy as American novitiate Margaret Daino in The First Omen, which 20th Century Studios will unleash in theaters on April 5.
The prequel to The Omen is directed by Arkasha Stevenson, based on characters created by David Seltzer (The Omen), with a story by Ben Jacoby (“Bleed”) and a screenplay by Tim Smith & Arkasha Stevenson and Keith Thomas (Firestarter).
The First Omen sees the shy Margaret sent to Rome in 1971 and explores the events surrounding the birth of the Antichrist. Across Sam Neill’s illustrious career, the actor has worked with animatronic dinosaurs for “Jurassic Park” and led iconic horror films like “Possession” and “In the Mouth of Madness.” But for “Apples Never Fall,” Neill had a career first: working with a tennis pro to well, play a tennis pro.
Neill admitted that he “needed a lot of help” to convincingly portray tennis coach Stan Delaney.

Plot: A young nun (Sydney Sweeney) accepts a position at a secluded convent in Italy. While there, she mysteriously becomes pregnant, despite being a virgin, and soon the convent becomes convinced she’s carrying the resurrection of Christ. However, something much more sinister might be happening.
Review: For most of its running time, Immaculate is a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies, with it getting a lot of mileage out of its picturesque Italian scenery and cast of old pro actors from the region. It’s a slow-burn and not particularly scary, but it builds up to an incredibly strong final scene, which is good enough that it really makes the entire film worth seeing just for the superb payoff.

Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Isabelle Adjani has been found guilty of tax fraud in Paris courts.
The “Possession” actress was given a two-year suspended prison sentence and fined €250,000, as Variety reported. IndieWire has reached out for comment.
The court found that Adjani set up her permanent residency in Portugal between 2016 and 2017 to avoid paying €236,000 in taxes. Additionally, the star did not declare €120,000 when depositing the funds into a U.S. bank account, and also disguised a €2 million donation into a loan. The investigation was opened in 2016, with a case of alleged fraud in business expenses leading to a second investigation in October 2020. A business associate had filed a complaint against Adjani in 2015 leading to the case.
Adjani’s attorney Olivier Pardo told Variety that they will be filing an appeal after the courts “relentlessly” prosecuted the actress. In October 2023, financial prosecutors had requested a suspended sentence of 18 months as well as a €250,000 fine; the...

Who would have ever thought the guy who directed a movie about Colin Farrell possibly turning into a Lobster would become an Oscar darling? But in spite of all the taboos he’s determined to break, that’s exactly the career trajectory Yorgos Lanthimos has had.
An idiosyncratic filmmaker, Lanthimos’ filmmaking quirks — stilted speech, deadpan acting, painstakingly framed cinematography, and pessimistic stories about the cruelty of men, both on a singular and societal level — haven’t disappeared since he made the leap to Hollywood. But the Greek director has slowly found himself an awards season staple. After a Best Foreign Language Film nomination for his breakout “Dogtooth” and a screenplay nod for his English-language debut “The Lobster,” Lanthimos ended up with ten nominations at the Oscars in 2019 for his darkly comedic period drama “The Favourite.” An acidic and subversive love story about the rule of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and her scheming court favorites,...

Since launching in beta in the U.S. in 2015, the horror-focused streaming service Shudder has developed a unique reputation for quality in streaming, even as its parent company AMC Networks has grappled with the same financial ills affecting the landscape at large.
One of the most well-known and celebrated brands in AMC’s portfolio of niche streamers, Shudder was conceived as a destination for horror consumers of all kinds, from the most seasoned to the most nascent. Per VP Global Acquisitions and Co-Productions Emily Gotto, one of the platform’s principal architects, the hope has been to be very intentional in onboarding new titles, programming in such a way as to cultivate an appreciation of the “length and breadth” of the genre.
Like more deep-pocketed services, Shudder ramped up on exclusive acquisitions and originals after building its foundation on a slew of library titles. But given its relative lack of resources — in comparison to,...

Actor Sam Neill has been quite open about his battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a form of blood cancer that he first revealed he had been diagnosed with earlier this year. Thankfully, Neill has been in remission from stage-three blood cancer but it is still something that he lives with. And while Neill has to undergo infusions every two weeks, what really scares him isn’t cancer but retirement.
Speaking with Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Sam Neill said he feels like he has to go into his treatments and condition with a particular mindset. “I know I’ve got it, but I’m not really interested in it…It’s out of my control. If you can’t control it, don’t get into it.” And so he has kept busy, adding that retirement “fills me with horror” in a way that cancer couldn’t quite do. And so active he has been,...

There is no doubt about the fact that the impact William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973) left on the horror genre was immense, so much so that critics often compare it with the influence Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey had on the science fiction landscape. Aside from being exceptional in every technical department of moviemaking, the movie dealt with a number of thought-provoking themes in a sincere manner. More than the supernatural intimidation of Pazuzu the demon, the audience found the horror in the grounded, relatable elements and characters, the conflict between reason and faith, the absolute corruption of innocence, and the true meaning of evil. The makers intended the movie to make the audience look for the horror within, and in doing so, they created an enduring legacy that inspired multitudes of horror classics like Possession (1981).

Lee Pace is one of Hollywood’s most underrated and talented performers. His extensive career in television and film began in the early 2000s, by which point he had already made a name for himself in stage productions.
Over the past several decades, Pace has consistently earned acclaim for his versatility and willingness to immerse himself completely into the roles he chooses. Most recently, Pace has been making waves in the series Foundation. In a recent chat with Interview magazine, Pace discussed the iconic nude fighting scene from the very first episode of the season, revealing why he believes “everyone” should try it at some point.

Isabelle Adjani on the ‘Great Violence’ of ‘Possession’: ‘It’s Something I Could Never Accept Again’
Isabelle Adjani considers herself a “survivor” after controversial thriller “Possession.”
The film, which places among IndieWire’s list of top ’80s films, was directed by Andrzej Żuławski and stars Adjani as a woman who decides into madness after running away from her marriage, causing her husband (Sam Neill) to discover the sinister nature of her infidelities. Adjani won the Best Actress award at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival but allegedly attempted suicide following the film’s release due to the extreme emotional and psychic demands of her performance.
Adjani revisited the legacy of “Possession” during an Interview magazine discussion alongside “Passages” and “Blue Is the Warmest Color” star Adèle Exarchopoulos.
“I often wonder, when a person is an actress, if they’re capable of overcoming everything that’s inflicted on them,” Adjani said. “I remember — if you’ll allow me to offer a comparison from my own career and some situations...

It’s a hot summer day, the car AC is on turbo and the radio is blasting Miguel’s “Sure Thing.” My 8-year-old nephew is singing along happily — until I tell him the song is older than he is.
He’s extremely puzzled. But it’s true.
“Sure Thing” was released in 2010 and was named Billboard’s No. 1 R&b/hip-hop song of 2011. But TikTok resurrected the melodic track this year, and the platform thrust it to higher heights on the pop charts, as streaming platforms added it to current playlists and radio stations began replaying the song 13 years after its release.
Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” was released in 2019, but the addictive bop became a favorite on her ultra-popular Eras Tour, and now it’s in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Sia, thanks to TikTok, relaunched a platinum hit with “Unstoppable” late last year, though it was released...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
With Amityville Vanishing Point unavailable to stream or buy in Canada, I’ve had to leap frog over it and go directly to 2016’s The Amityville Legacy (aka Amityville Toybox).
Co-written and co-directed by Dustin Ferguson and Mike Johnson (file away the former: he’ll return several times in the future), the 15th Amityville film is another low-budget, independent effort. All of the characters have the same first name as the actor playing them, and the performances are often amateurish. Namely the film’s visual aesthetic is flat and the audio quality is poor, particularly in early scenes set in cars. The plot recycles the events of both the original and the remake, with a father who goes mad and kills his family,...

The cult classic 1981 divorce thriller was central to Neill’s upcoming memoir “Did I Ever Tell You This?” with the actor calling it “one of the best films I was lucky to be in.”
However, Neill noted, “This is by no means a universal view. Not many people have ever seen it and, of those who have, it is true that many loathe it. I myself regard it as a masterpiece, albeit a very flawed masterpiece. I am not alone in that view.”
Neill wrote that director Andrzej Żuławski was a “handsome, charismatic, and wild filmmaker” whose practices would not be condoned in modern cinema.
“I didn’t like him much; what he saw as direction often was just downright bullying. But he had vision, he was a true cineaste. And they are rare,” Neill penned. “Żuławski asked more...

Sam Neill, star of movies such as "Jurassic Park" and "The Hunt for Red October," as well as all around multinational treasure, has revealed that he has been dealing with cancer. According to The Guardian, the 75-year-old actor disclosed this information in his upcoming memoir, "Did I Ever Tell You This?" The good news is that Neill is currently cancer free and is in remission.
Per the outlet, Neill underwent treatment for stage-three blood cancer after noticing that he had swollen glands while promoting "Jurassic World Dominion" last year. He received a diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and was treated with chemotherapy. That didn't totally do the trick and Neill is now taking a chemotherapy drug that he will receive monthly in perpetuity. But, most importantly, he is, at present, cancer free. The memoir, ultimately, started as a way for Neill to keep himself busy during a troubling time, although...

Sam Neill reveals he’s being treated for stage-three blood cancer in his forthcoming memoir.
“The thing is, I’m crook. Possibly dying,” he writes in chapter one of the book, Did I Ever Tell You This? “I may have to speed this up.”
“I found myself with nothing to do,” The Jurassic Park star told The Guardian in an interview ahead of the release. “And I’m used to working. I love working. I love going to work. I love being with people every day and enjoying human company and friendship and all these things. And suddenly I was deprived of that. And I thought, ‘what am I going to do?’
“I never had any intention to write a book. But as I went on and kept writing, I realised it was actually sort of giving me a reason to live and I would go to bed thinking, ‘I’ll write about that tomorrow…...

After spending our birthday month talking about ‘Weird Sex’ films like Videodrome, 1981’s Possession, Tusk and Wolf, last week Trace and I jumped back to the 60s to tackle an iconic UK spooky flick with The Haunting.
With the release of Scream 6 this past week, it only made sense to open the Patreon vault and revisit Scream (2022), Radio Silence’s ode to Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s iconic slasher franchise.
In the film, 10 years have passed since the last massacre in Woodsboro. When Tara (Jenna Ortega) is attacked in her house, her estranged older sister Sam (Melissa Barrera) returns home with her faithful boyfriend (Jack Quaid) in tow. When more people are killed, a new generation of suspects and victims emerges with ties to legacy characters.
It’s quickly deduced by twins Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding), as well as Sheriff Judy Hicks...
