A small piece of contemporary cinema history was written last night in St Andrews, Scotland when Steven Soderbergh sat down with Joe and Anthony Russo on stage at the Sands International Film Festival to discuss their 2002 collaboration Welcome to Collinwood.
Produced by Soderbergh and George Clooney who also stars alongside William H. Macy, Isaiah Washington, Sam Rockwell, Luis Guzmán, and Patricia Clarkson, Welcome to Collinwood was the second feature from the Russos following their debut feature Pieces, which bombed out of Slamdance in 1997.
“There was zero interest in the film from anybody but this man over here,” Anthony said of Pieces, pointing towards Soderbergh. The sex, lies and videotape filmmaker had been present at the doomed Pieces screening at Slamdance and reached out to the directing duo to impart some wisdom.
“It was insanely ambitious and dense,” Soderbergh told Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr, who moderated the talk, of Pieces.

Steve Martin in “Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” now streaming on Apple TV+. Photo Credit: Apple TV+ Steve Martin has lived much of his life in front of the camera, even before he became a breakout standup comedy star in the late 1970s. Of course, since then, he’s made plenty of TV and film appearances, but for the new documentary, Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces, the producers have accumulated plenty of vintage footage, photographs, and material from Martin’s earlier days, as well. Martin spoke about the process of finding and using the archival material featured in the documentary. On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. I will moderate that discussion, which will touch on the preposterously unlikely way that Soderbergh discovered and godfathered the career of the duo that directed Hollywood’s all-time highest grossing film, Avengers: Endgame. The festival runs next month from April 19-21.
Soderbergh’s own career took off with sex, lies, and videotape, the film that just celebrated 35 years since the filmmaker turned Sundance into a lucrative independent film hatchery. It went on to win the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, followed by Soderbergh’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He has gone on to direct films as diverse as Traffic, for which he received the 2000 Academy Award for Directing—the...

The Pitch: You Can’t Expect the Irish to Get Lucky Every Time
One of the biggest tragedies of modern cinema is the unavoidable fact that most movies make you wait at least ten minutes to hear a floating head loudly proclaim, “The penis is evil!” But 1974 was a different time and “Zardoz” is a different kind of movie, so it delivers that exact line before the five-minute mark even arrives. Believe it or not, that’s not even the first Wtf moment in this genitalia-obsessed fantasy epic.

Juan Piquer Simón’s exploitation slasher Pieces (1982) has a bonkers reputation that precedes it, delivering one of horror’s most entertaining audience experiences of all time. The tagline, “It’s exactly what you think it is!” only scratches the surface of the weirdness within. Sure, you get exactly what you expect in terms of gore in this tale of a jigsaw puzzle-obsessed killer with a chainsaw, but the execution is so over the top there’s nothing that really prepares you for the unique brand of madness.
Simon was initially approached to helm a sequel to Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left, but passed because the script he was offered seemed too boring. Then he was offered a 30-page treatment for Pieces, then titled Jigsaw, intended at the time to be a made-for-tv movie. It was so insane that not only was he intrigued, he was determined to make the script believable.

Eli Roth is back. And he’s here for “Thanksgiving.”
For the past decade, Roth has nimbly moved through different genres – erotic thriller (“Knock Knock”), revenge movie (“Death Wish”), family fantasy (“The House with a Clock in Its Walls”), nature documentary (“Fin”) and big budget video game adaptation (next year’s “Borderlands”). But now he’s back with a down-and-dirty horror movie, this time centered around one of the happiest time of year.
In “Thanksgiving,” adapted from a fake trailer that Roth had made for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” project, a superstore’s super sale leads to tragedy. A year later a masked man in a pilgrim costume, known as John Carver, starts taking out the townspeople involved in the tragedy, one by one. And, yes, the kills are just as creative and stomach-churning as you’d expect from the man behind “Hostel,” “Cabin Fever” and “The Green Inferno.

Few moments in recent memory have brought me as much joy as the realization that my IndieWire After Dark partner Alison Foreman had never seen “Pieces.” She’s one of the few people I’ve met whose knowledge of slasher franchises dwarfs my own, so I figured the window to introduce her to the bloodiest chainsaw massacre in Boston history (and the shockingly incompetent investigation that followed it) had closed a long time ago. Pieces of a Woman: Szumowska & Englert Compose Compassionate Portrait of Trans Woman

Explicitly vulnerable and unapologetically authentic, ‘Broken’ is Avaion’s latest emotive chapter out now on Sony Music.
In alignment with his mantra ‘music for dancing or dreaming depending on how you’re feeling,’ Avaion’s new single ‘Broken’ is a clean-cut juxtaposition of the internal onslaught in the aftermath of heartbreak, paired with an irresistible danceability and weightless sensation of unburdening emotion through sonic means.
Adorned with dainty acoustic guitar picks, Avaion carves a tender soundscape lead by his self-sung somber lyrics over ambient electronic tones and a steady laid-back groove. Avaion’s heart-on-sleeve line ‘cause I’m the one who always cried, I’m the one who’s broken now’ could tempt the listener into a sense of self-pity. Yet, instinctively, the German producer evokes a sudden surge of rapture. Relieving the pent-up frustration, angst, and pain of heartache for just a fleeting moment amidst the deep pulsating bass line,...

It’s a clear, windy day on the Atlanta set of the sci-fi adventure “The Electric State,” Joe and Anthony Russo’s latest film for Netflix through their independent studio, Agbo. While the brothers direct Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt inside one of the soundstages, their youngest sister, Agbo’s newly promoted chief creative officer, Angela Russo-Otstot, is spreading some good news in the trailers parked outside about one of the company’s executives, senior vice president of physical production, Ari Costa.
“Ari’s a papa!” Russo-Otstot proclaims to Costa’s boss, Jake Aust, who works in the trailer next to hers. She shares all the fun new-baby details — name, time of birth — and she and Aust banter about the kid’s possible nicknames. Then, without missing a beat, Russo-Otstot pivots to check in with Aust about another Agbo project, “All Fun and Games,” an independent horror film Costa...

Ever since Joe and Anthony Russo released “Avengers: Endgame,” in 2019, the sibling directors have been asked over and over if they would ever work again with Marvel Studios. Each time, they’ve tried to politely deflect — “We’re always talking; we’d need to see what would work” — even though, as Joe put it to Variety in early October, they’ve known the truth for years. “We won’t be ready to do anything with Marvel until the end of the decade,” he says.
Instead, the Russos have dedicated themselves to assembling their own creative cosmos with Agbo, the independent, artist-friendly studio they launched in 2017 with producing partner Mike Larocca. Their “Endgame”-sized ambition is no less than to help lead the industry into the future of entertainment, which is why the Russos have been selected as Variety’s Showmen of the Year.

By focusing on Niecy Nash’s Simone — a Black, queer woman and rookie agent — in “The Rookie: Feds,” co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer Alexi Hawley knows that the spinoff series cannot shy away from discourse about systemic change and structural racism. In real life, less than 1 of feds are Black women, and in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and the 2020 protests against police, calls for the termination of law enforcement procedurals have swelled in tandem with discourse about defunding.
The uprisings against racial injustice broke as Hawley and his writers room opened for “The Rookie” Season 3, and the sensitivities of more nuanced depictions of cops has colored his and Terence Paul Winter’s approach to “Feds.”
Hawley told TheWrap in an interview, “[‘The Rookie’] had always been aspirational about policing, but it became very clear that ‘aspirational’ wasn’t enough, that we were portraying a version of policing...

Stop stressing over what to watch this Halloween and instead turn to this varied mix of horror titles, both old and new, from Shudder’s library
Every streaming service turns Halloween into an opportunity to showcase what horror genre heavy hitters they have in their library. But there’s extra pressure for a service like Shudder (also available on AMC+), which specifically zeroes in on horror programming, to go all-out when it comes to the Halloween season.
Shudder has more than 600 horror films in its growing library with dozens more having been added to the mix this October as part of their intensive “Home for Halloween” celebration. As such, it can sometimes be even more difficult to figure out the perfect viewing schedule when there are so many options at one’s disposal.

Chrissy Teigen was on hand to support husband John Legend at the 2022 Emmys on Monday night. While posing for pictures on the red carpet, the couple were as cute as ever as Legend cradled Teigen's baby bump.
"Normally we would not do a new song in a situation like this. We listened with skepticism which quickly turned to wild enthusiasm. This is an incredulous powerful moving song," Emmys executive producer Reginald "Reggie" Hudlin told Deadline last week. "You guys are all fans of John Legend, you know how he can grab straight in your heart and break you down . . . A John Legend performance is always something to be excited about and the song is unique and special and uniquely suited to the context we'll be putting it in.

Squid Game and Quinta Brunson will be looking to make history Monday at the 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The Netflix mega-hit could become the first non-English-language series to win Outstanding Drama, while the Abbott Elementary creator, executive producer and star could become only the second Black woman to win three Emmys — and the first to do it in the same year — if she converts all of her nominations.
The two newcomers won’t have it easy, as both will face returning drama and comedy champions Succession and Ted Lasso, respectively, in what promise to be intriguing clashes in the top series and acting categories. Euphoria‘s Zendaya also will be getting a lot of attention as she is aiming to become the youngest ever two-time Emmy winner, while The White Lotus seems like the one to beat in the longform side.

The series, which is inspired loosely by true events, as well as Daria Polatin’s 2017 novel of the same name, debuted on the streaming service earlier this month.
Starring Emily Deschanel, Madeleine Arthur and Sam Jaeger, Devil in Ohio focuses on the investigation surrounding a satanic cult in rural Ohio.
In a three-star review for The Independent, Annabel Nugent wrote: “In lesser shows, dipping into the past is a clunky distraction from the action at hand, but the flashbacks of Devil in Ohio are welcome moments that pull back the veil on the mystery at pace and for once actually deliver on the darkness promised by a show’s premise.
“Certainly, Devil in Ohio does not reinvent the wheel – and no doubt it’ll be subsumed into the amorphous mass of Netflix adaptations sooner rather than later,...

In a few days Kenan Thompson will host his first Primetime Emmys show, but he’s not afraid of an ‘Oscar slap’, he says.
Speaking at an Emmy preview event in LA on Wednesday night, the SNL comic reflected on the infamous physical clash between Oscars host Chris Rock and Will Smith, and on the pitfalls of ‘roasting’ at awards shows in general, reports Deadline.
“I think a good comic is supposed to be aware,” Thompson said.
“I mean I’m not calling Chris a bad comic, he just wasn’t necessarily aware of that situation, so it’s not fair to lump him into that conversation. But overall those kind of roast-y kind of people, you have to be smart, because you know, there’s a way to jab at people without offending, like for real for real. I don’t think offense necessarily gets us anywhere as a society.

John Legend will be performing his new song ‘Pieces’ at the 74th Emmy Awards on NBC Sept. 12. It will be the backdrop for the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment. His involvement was revealed by Emmys executive producer Reginald “Reggie” Hudlin during a press event Thursday night.
“Normally we would not do a new song in a situation like this. We listened with skepticism which quickly turned to wild enthusiasm. This is an incredulous powerful moving song,” Hudlin said. “You guys are all fans of John Legend, you know how he can grab straight in your heart and break you down. … A John Legend performance is always something to be excited about and the song is unique and special and uniquely suited to the context we’ll be putting it in.”
Legend recently posted a tease for ‘Pieces’ on YouTube. You can listen to it below.
