Oscar-winning Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has made a name for himself with a series of brightly colored, delightfully kinky and unabashedly melodramatic titles, mixing comedy, drama, sex and violence to great success. He shows no signs of slowing down, with his latest outing in 2019 being the Oscar-nominated “Pain and Glory.” Let’s take a look back at all 22 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1949 in Spain, Almodovar came to prominence during La Movida Madrilena, a cultural renaissance that blossomed at the end of Francoist Spain. Staring with his filmmaking debut “Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom” (1980), the openly gay director showed an affinity for oddballs and outsiders, populating his films with transvestites, transexuals and homosexuals, all of whom had previously been relegated to the closet. He also showed a talent for working with women, and throughout his 40 year career has placed actresses such as Penelope Cruz,...

Pedro Almodóvar has never done Westerns. Not unless you count the winks at “Johnny Guitar” in “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (1988) or “Duel in the Sun” in “Matador” (1985). Likely the most American and the most masculine of genres, the Western and the onscreen cowboy are foundational figures of manhood.

Anonymous Content and Boat Rocker have partnered to co-finance and co-sell an untitled political thriller feature documentary by Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Jesse Moss (“Boys State”) and Tony Gerber (“The Notorious Mr. Bout”).
Produced by Boat Rocker’s Matador Content, the project was shot over the course of two days last month in Washington, D.C.
While details on the project are being kept under wraps, Moss teased it as a “an utterly unique story that is equal parts political thriller, dystopian science fiction and intimate cinema vérité.”
“It expands the form of non-fiction filmmaking in exciting ways and is of enormous significance to our political future. We can’t wait to share it,” Moss continued.
Moss and Gerber previously co-directed “Full Battle Rattle,” a critically acclaimed film about life inside the U.S. Army’s Iraq simulation in the California desert. Moss’s credits also include “Boys State” which won a...

According to iconic film critic Pauline Kael, Quentin Tarantino borrowed the opening credits for “Jackie Brown” from filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
While Tarantino has been open about his admiration for Almodóvar, especially his Nc-17 rated “Matador,” the auteur revealed that Kael told him the “Jackie Brown” credits was so similar to Almodóvar’s work that “it needed quotations around it,” the “Pulp Fiction” Oscar winner said during the New York City stop on his “Cinema Speculation” book tour.
Moderator Elvis Mitchell, a friend and critic, reminisced with Tarantino about a dinner in Cannes during which he encouraged the director to call Kael after decades of admiring her work. The duo then called Kael from a payphone.
While their conversation with Kael ranged across a variety of films, Tarantino shared the “Jackie Brown” comment fondly, and said Mitchell told him meeting Kael in person would be like “meeting a bird” despite her...

The “Stranger Things” kids might not all make it to Season 5.
Millie Bobby Brown told The Wrap that the ensemble cast is “way too big,” which means someone will have to get the ax soon.
“Last night we couldn’t even take one group picture because there were like 50 of us. I was like, you need to start killing people off,” Brown joked.
Maybe just one good Red Wedding-esque scene will do the trick: “We need to have the mindset of ‘Game of Thrones,'” Brown continued. “Kill me off! They tried killing David [Harbour] off and they brought him back! It’s ridiculous…The Duffer Brothers are sensitive Sallies who don’t want to kill anybody off.”
Alongside co-star Noah Schnapp, Brown added, “I am scared to vocalize anything that I want, because it always turns into ‘Millie Bobby Brown demands this storyline.’ I’m just going to say I...

When your sci-fi horror series is built around mysterious conspiracies and shocking revelations, it's important to keep a tight ship. That's probably why the Duffer Brothers only share the secrets of "Stranger Things" with trusted cast members ... And occasionally the manufacturers of Monopoly. But there is one secret that even the board-game tie-ins aren't privy to, and it's one of the biggest questions hanging over the demogorgon-infested series: who will actually survive the horrors of the Upside Down?
For fans of "Stranger Things," the answer won't be revealed for quite some time. While the series is set to return in...

The wait for more “Stranger Things” is almost over, with the first portion of the Netflix show’s highly anticipated fourth season dropping next Friday.
Much has been made of Netflix’s decision to split “Stranger Things 4” into two volumes, with one batch of episodes streaming on May 27 and more being released on July 1. But until now, little was known about how the streamer planned to split up the season.
Volume 1 will contain Episodes 1 through 7, with Volume 2 finishing the story with Episodes 8 and 9. Netflix recently revealed that episodes 7 through 9 are both feature-length, ensuring that both volumes receive a proper ending.
“Stranger Things 4” is truly an epic endeavor, with the nine episodes containing five more hours of footage than any of the previous seasons. With “Stranger Things 5” scheduled to be the final season of the blockbuster show, “Stranger Things 4” has quite a bit of foundation to lay for the series finale.

The Monopoly board has turned everything Upside Down.
Leaked images from an official Monopoly “Stranger Things” tie-in reportedly reveal Season 4 spoilers for the Netflix hit series, and creators Matt and Ross Duffer are not having it.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix was frustrated with the retail mishap but according to sources, The Duffer Brothers were not even consulted about the game and had a “total meltdown” over the spoilers going public before Season 4 premieres May 27.
A Reddit thread claimed the game was bought at “a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fair and square by a consumer. Nobody stole it; nobody leaked a sample.”
The post continued, “If it was placed on the floor ahead of schedule, it was probably the fault of an employee improperly processing shipment. Netflix can’t really do anything except maybe write a pissed-off letter to Target, who can fire the employee if they care enough.

It looks like some major spoilers from “Stranger Things 4” have surfaced, and series creators the Duffer brothers aren’t happy about it.
Plot details from the upcoming installment of the Netflix series actually surfaced via a Reddit thread in April, when the new version of the “Stranger Things” Monopoly game appears to have made it onto some store shelves early.
Several of the game cards hinted at pretty massive plot points for Season 4. We’ll spare you the details, as “Stranger Things” is a show best experienced without knowing what’s going to happen next.
Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer are said to have been quite unhappy with the leak, considering the great lengths they go to to keep details for each season under wraps, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet used the language “total meltdown” to describe the Duffers’ reaction to learning about the leak.

James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte brought us the riveting HBO docuseries “McMillions,” about an ex-cop who rigged the McDonald’s Monopoly game promotion for a decade; and their latest, and first project under their FunMeter banner, “The Big Conn,” is now streaming on Apple TV+. “The Big Conn,” which just launched a companion podcast, is also about a real-life account of a massive con — in this case, run by Kentucky lawyer Eric C. Conn, who pillaged Social Security funds. But FunMeter isn’t confined to what Hernandez called “quirky fraud cases,” with upcoming forays into the worlds of sports and music. The partners are also opening their doors to other filmmakers as producers, with a number of yet-to-be-announced projects in the works. “With our company, we always saw it as, ‘Here’s an opportunity for us to help other filmmakers and other producers and other directors,'” Lazarte told...

Convicted felon Eric C. Conn certainly lived up to his name.
The small-town Kentucky attorney, who described himself as a “wealthy and flamboyant lawyer,” defrauded the U.S. government of more than half a billion dollars in the biggest scam ever perpetrated against the Social Security Administration. His scheme funded a lifestyle that took him to ports of call around the globe, where—again, by his own description—his exploits rivaled James Bond as he “pursued the world’s most beautiful women.”
“You’re dealing with a guy that doesn’t have a moral compass,” noted a lawyer who once represented Conn. “You can’t get mad at a snake for being a snake. It is what it is.”
That observation is proffered in the new documentary series The Big Conn, which began streaming on Apple TV+ over the weekend. The four-part Emmy contender comes from James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte,...

My heart may not have stopped while viewing this delightful, bite-sized series celebrating queer love, but it did its fair share of melting, skipping, and riotous cheering.
Heartstopper is the lustrous TV adaptation of Alice Oseman's YA graphic novel. It follows Charlie and Nick as they navigate the evolution of their friendship into something more, and it's too cute for words, but I'll do my best.
With only eight short episodes, it's an easy-breezy one-night binge.
It is confounding that Heartstopper is not dominating the global Netflix charts. It should be sitting steadfast and pretty at number one, so this is my formal plea to you, reader: stream it!
You ask why? What makes Heartstopper so compelling?
For starters, most of the teens in Heartstopper are actually teens in real life, lending it an authentic quality that many YA shows lack nowadays.
The talented Joe Locke and Kit Connor...

"We laughed at him, but everyone wanted to meet him." Apple has revealed the trailer for an intriguing new true crime documentary series called The Big Conn, the next project from the creators / directors of the McMillions about the McDonald's Monopoly game fraud scheme. This time they're focusing on a different kind of fraud, but with just as much trickery and deception. The new four-part series tells the unbelievable true story of larger-than-life attorney, Eric C. Conn, who defrauded the government and taxpayers over half a billion dollars in the largest Social Security fraud case in United States history. All four parts of the series will premiere alongside an "Apple TV+ Original" companion podcast that will explore Conn’s con and outrageous lifestyle further with additional interviews & behind-the-scenes details. This sounds wild! It seems to be more proof that it's always the ones hiding in plaint sight pulling the biggest crimes,...

The Simpsons Season 33 Episode 13
The Celtic bagpipes which open The Simpsons Season 33 episode 13, “Boyz N the Highlands,” are jarring and misleading, much like Groundskeeper Willie. This is by design, because the journey the installment takes is one long sidetrack.
The main story concerns Springfield’s Troubled Truants: Bart Simpson, Nelson Muntz, Dolph Shapiro, and Martin Prince, who claims he volunteered the 18-hour detention trek for extra credit. Each of the young thugs are introduced by their case files. Bart was sentenced for his creative use of laundry detergent pods. The Highlands walk to Ankle Rock, or as Nelson puts it, “the death march to stay out of prison,” is juvenile delinquency aversion therapy, along the lines of “Scared Straight.” Springfield’s educational system is apparently loaded with them, including Inward Bound and Empathy Bootcamp. It is designed to build team-work and character, but is...

Warning: this review contains spoilers for Doctor Who ‘Eve of the Daleks’
“You go through all those presents and right at the end, tucked away at the bottom, there’s always one stupid old satsuma. Who wants a satsuma?”
Surprisingly prescient words, spoken by the newly-minted Tenth Doctor all those Christmases ago. After all, we as an audience have barely finished unwrapping Doctor Who: Flux, which was teed up to be the biggest, most ambitious, apocalyptic magnum opus of Chris Chibnall’s tenure – the very definition of an overstuffed stocking. By contrast, being back to business as usual and the third New Year’s Day Dalek special in a row, there was every chance that ‘Eve of the Daleks’ was going to turn out to be the satsuma of this year’s run.

This article contains spoilers for Succession season 3.
Here’s the thing about the Succession season 3 finale: everything is going to work out fine for the Roy siblings.
Despite the sale to GoJo ending any chance of their inheriting Waystar Royco, Kendall, Shiv, and Roman Roy aren’t going to be financially destitute any time soon. The trio has been obscenely rich for so long that it’s almost functionally impossible for them to ever not be rich anymore. Through their previous jobs at Waystar, allowances, and various investments, each of the Roy children are certainly still multi-millionaires, if not billionaires. Like the Murdoch family children they’re based on, the Roys will always be rich and always be welcome in Illuminati-level high society. Nothing actually bad happens to the Roys in the brilliant “All the Bells Say.” Kendall recovers from a likely suicide attempt in the penultimate episode almost immediately.

Spoiler alert: Do not read if you have not seen the Season 3 finale of HBO’s “Succession,” “All the Bells Say.”
After a rollicking Season 3 finale, one thing’s for sure: “Succession” built a lot of shareholder value in its third season.
The HBO drama wrapped up its nine-episode run with a 65-minute closer, “All the Bells Say.” The episode saw the power dynamics among patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his battered-and-bruised adult children go up and down as much as much as the stock market in recent months.
The episode — written by series creator/showrunner Jesse Armstrong and directed by Mark Mylod — showcased “Succession’s” signature brand of boardroom thriller, with deeply emotional scenes among estranged family members cut with dealmaking and double-cross machinations as the Roy clan’s Waystar Royco conglomerate pursued a risky transaction with tech giant GoJo.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Succession, Season 3, Episode 9, “All the Bells Say.”] After leaving some loose strings in the penultimate episode last week, Succession is tying things up and creating new paths in its mind-blowing Season 3 finale. Despite the relatively somber final moments of the previous installment, this episode opens with a slightly more light-hearted scene between Logan (Brian Cox) and his grandchildren as he reads them stories and reassures them that their father Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is okay after nearly drowning in a pool. When he receives a call, Logan yells for Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) to join him, and we soon discover that Greg (Nicholas Braun), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), Connor (Alan Ruck), and Willa (Justine Lupe) are playing a game of Monopoly nearby. As they joke around for a bit, Roman brings up Connor’s proposal and pushes for Willa to say “yes.” Tom excuses himself from the conversation to take an important call,...

One of Succession‘s key characters dodged a bullet in the Season 3 finale… but did Waystar’s status as a media titan survive?
Sunday’s finale opens with Logan playing the kindly grandfather role, reading a book to Iverson and adding, “Your dad was Ok, you know?” So what happened to Kendall? While the others play a game of Monopoly — they all cheat, of course — Comfry brings the news: She found Kendall floating in the pool, and the hospital kept him overnight, but he’s fine. A weakened Kendall walks in, chalking it up to “one too many limoncellos.” He might skip the wedding,...

Making films based on single-set stage plays has always posed the dilemma of whether to remain faithful to the text at the risk of visual tedium or “open it up” but perhaps lose intensity and focus in the process. Florian Zeller recently conquered the problem, and then some, with his bold visual approach to the film version of his play The Father. Now, American playwright Stephen Karam has done the same in his big-screen directorial debut with his insidiously fine adaptation of his own 2015 Pulitzer finalist and 2016 Tony Award-winning play The Humans which opens in theaters via A24 on November 24 and will be available to stream on Showtime the same day.
In both The Father and The Humans, the directors have augmented the impact of their plays — each talkathons limited to single settings onstage — via the diabolically shrewd strategy of making the spaces where the action takes place at least...

In one of their first major moves after Entertainment One’s $4 billion acquisition by toy maker Hasbro was completed in early 2020, Entertainment One’s President and CEO Darren Throop and President of Film and Television Steve Bertram set out to find a Head of Television. They brought in former HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo, initially as a consultant. Since he was named President of Global Television in June 2020, Lombardo has led a ramp-up of TV projects based on Hasbro properties as well as original ideas. Of the Hasbro IP, a big priority for the company is to develop scripted and unscripted series based on the classic Dungeons & Dragon game, Lombardo said in an extensive interview with Deadline about his programming strategy.

Apple has been found to “hide critical information from consumers and illegally stifle consumer choice,” a judge ruled in the company’s legal battle with Epic Games, but the mixed decision will leave App Store fees in place.
U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers did not find that Apple fully fit the legal definition of a monopoly. In her ruling (read it Here), she said Apple must now let developers tell consumers how to make purchases outside of apps. That lessens the control Apple can exert over the process, and could limit the revenue it derives from the store.

Nahnatchka Khan launched a show (NBC’s “Young Rock”) during the Covid-19 pandemic, but she considers herself lucky that she was able to start the writers’ room ahead of the lockdown. This meant getting to sit with her new team in person for “five or six weeks” in early 2020.
“It was honestly a gift,” she says. “On a first season show, it’s invaluable to just be all together like that to get into the flow.”
Once they did have to pivot to working from home, she was leading her room steps away from her wife, Julia Bicknell, who was also in a Zoom writers’ room. Their two dogs were always in her space, as well.
“We were like, ‘Our house is too small!’ Our thing was, ‘Let’s get on Zillow and figure out where we’re going,'” Khan says, adding that they did recently successfully close on a new home.
