- Originally released at 153 minutes, then cut to 136 minutes and finally re-released in 1981 in a 164-minutes special edition with restored material, including the complete musical number "Happy Endings," which was seen in a much shorter version in the originally released version of the film.
- The 136 minute version (an extra on the British DVD release) completely removes two large portions of the film. The first, nearly 15 minute segment starts with Jimmy and Francine discussing the sheet music for the song that becomes "New York, New York", followed by the entire scene inside Paul's club where Jimmy makes a scene, Jimmy buying Francine flowers to apologize for his outburst, and Francine making a scrapbook of photos from the earlier events of the film. The next cut is the entirety of the "Happy Endings" film and musical number.
