Alice Walker published her acclaimed novel “The Color Purple” in 1982. It sold five million copies; Walker became the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize and she also received the National Book Club Award. Three years later, Steven Spielberg directed the lauded film version which made stars out of Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. It earned 11 Oscar nominations. The story revolves around a young woman who suffers abuse from her father and husband for four decades until she finds her own identity. Not exactly the stuff of a Broadway musical.
But the 2005 tuner version received strong reviews, ran 910 performances and earned ten Tony nominations, winning best actress for Lachanze. The 2015 production picked up two Tonys for best revival and actress for Cynthia Erivo. The movie musical version opened strong Christmas Day with $18 million and is a strong contender in several Oscar categories especially for Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks.

Appearing visibly shaken with lips trembling, Judy Huth told jurors in a California courtroom Tuesday that Bill Cosby was waiting for her outside a bathroom at the Playboy Mansion in 1975 and beckoned her to a bed by patting the mattress next to where he was sitting. She was 16 years old at the time. Cosby was 37.
“He wanted me to sit down, and I sat down. I was scared,” Huth recalled, publicly describing the alleged attack for the first time since suing Cosby in December 2014. “He tried to lean me back.

Wielding his celebrity status and a “sense of invincibility,” Bill Cosby sexually assaulted three teenagers in a string of attacks in 1975 using a “common plan” and clear “intent,” lawyer Nathan Goldberg told jurors Wednesday during opening statements in the long-awaited trial involving accuser Judy Huth.
Cosby, 84, is only facing civil liability for Huth’s claims he forced her into a sex act at the Playboy Mansion when she was 16 years old in 1975, but Goldberg told jurors that they will hear testimony from all three women during the trial now underway in Santa Monica,...

With less than a week to go before jury selection starts in Judy Huth’s sexual battery case against Bill Cosby, the disgraced comedian’s lawyers made a last-ditch attempt Tuesday to kill her long-delayed California civil case on the grounds that she recently shifted the date of his alleged attack at the Playboy Mansion by an entire year. They did not succeed.

This What We Do in the Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 Episode 4
A coastal resort destination like Atlantic City might not seem the wisest place for a vampire to vacation, but it pays off in “The Casino.” The Staten Island vampires may be shirking their duties on the Vampiric Council, but What We Do in the Shadows season 3 episode 4 benefits from the change in scenery. This is especially shattering for Nandor (Kayvan Novak), who learns during this episode that the world is not only round, but also not held up on the shoulders of four mighty elephants.
The fang gang, plus energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) and familiar-turned-bodyguard Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), are invited out by their favorite neighbor, and Laszlo’s (Matt Berry) best human friend, Shaun (Anthony Atamanuik). He and his, also human, wife Charmaine (Marissa Jaret Winokur) are celebrating their wedding...

At one point," says Carrie Fisher, "I felt like I had to de-Leia the house." Clearly, the effort did not completely succeed: There's a life-size Princess Leia doll on the porch of her Beverly Hills mansion (in a phone booth, for some reason); once you go through the doorway, there's also a glowing light-bulb sculpture of Leia made for Fisher by a Japanese artist and a footrest upholstered with ancient Star Wars bedsheets, among the other artifacts. Long ago, Fisher made her peace with her semi-permanent residency in a certain distant galaxy.

It came as little surprise that Frank Grillo would be returning for the third film in "The Purge" series when it was announced last week. The talented actor has garnered a sizeable fanbase in recent years for his committed performances, and the actor was easily the shining light of the sequel.
What may surprise you to learn though is that writer/director James DeMonaco didn't even have a script for the third "Purge" and wasn't going to do it without Grillo back onboard - unexpected considering the series is seen are more of anthology style deal with only the concept carrying over between entries. There were a number of things I did and said in San Diego this year that are not going to be covered as separate articles. In some cases, someone else at HitFix was in the room to write the thing up. In some cases, it's just about time. Whatever the case, though, here are some random impressions to help round out my coverage of the single biggest nerd hype event of the year. 1. Rob Kazinsky should be our new Shazam I met Kazinsky on the set of "Pacific Rim," and while I thought he was solid in that film, his Australian accent was a nightmare. One of the things that I found most engaging at the Entertainment Weekly "New Warriors" panel was the way he offered that accent up as his greatest career regret so far. "You don't have to stop me on the street and tell me," he said.

Actor J.K. Simmons just won the New York Film Critics Circle's award for Best Supporting Actor, and it's not likely to be his last this season. The veteran character actor has made a real splash with his work in Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" as a sort of drill sergeant jazz conductor who torments a student with vicious methods, but naturally, there's a complexity to the character that makes him more than just an antagonist. The entire film's subtextual philosophy is rooted in his very being, and that wasn't lost on Simmons as he set out to portray him. You'll read more about this in detail below, but there's a notion in the film about what encouragement really is, what it should be and what it means. There's also a very interesting dynamic about external perception of this country's breed of exceptionalism slithering under the surface, which is just one of...

Chamberlin - who starred on The Electric Company alongside Bill Cosby, Rita Moreno and then-newcomer Morgan Freeman - played the character Vi, who owned a diner and sang duets with Freeman. Feature James Clayton 6 Dec 2013 - 06:12
This week, James considers the impact of film sequels, and comes up with a few he'd like to see himself. Robot & Frank Rises, anyone?
"This film! I like it! Another!" Thor at the premiere of Thor III: Revenge of the Sif.
"Too much of a good thing is wonderful." - Liberace at the premiere of Behind the Candelabra 2: Attack of the Rhinestones.
"So, when do we start shooting the next one?" - Every major movie studio executive on the Monday following a bumper opening weekend at the box office.
Did you enjoy that? Good, because they're going to make a sequel. This is standard operating procedure and the modus operandi in Hollywood film production. If something is successful you do it again. And then you do it again. And then you do it again and again until it's not successful or until a...

Rick Grimes is having yet another very bad day. Not a wake-up-from-a-coma-to-find-the-world's-been-overrun-by-zombies bad day or even a my-son-just-shot-my-wife-after-she-gave-birth-to-a-child-that-may-have-been-fathered-by-my-former-best-friend sort of day, but still pretty awful. There's dirt smeared on his face, a gash over his left eye and a soiled white bandage wrapped loosely around one hand. He's gasping for breath as he trudges up a hill outside the prison he and the band of survivors he's leading call home. He looks like he might collapse.

Clare's at home, staring into space and trying to imagine what life would be like if she didn't go to Degrassi, because in the real world, the ratio of horrible people to just okay ones is much more skewed towards completely average guys who don't try and take advantage of teenage girls by making out with them. Too bad she does go to Degrassi, where horrible people are everywhere just waiting to suck on your face. But when Eli walks in all charming and sh*t holding 30,000 newspapers with which to read Clare's article 30,000 times, they're both shocked to discover that her piece didn't make the issue. Something's up, you guys, and it's got something to do with Asher's raging hormones!

Will Smith and Denzel Washington as Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby? Perhaps! According to Deadline.com's Mike Fleming, Washington and Smith could team up for a remake of "Uptown Saturday Night," from director Adam McKay.
The original "Uptown Saturday Night" was released in 1974, the first of an unofficial trilogy Poitier and Cosby made together. (It was followed by "Let's Do It Again" and "A Piece of the Action.")
There are plenty of caveats, of course, for this new version. For starters, Smith and Washington are merely being sought to star. If this sounds familiar, that's because you remember when Variety reported on the "Uptown Saturday Night" remake last March. Smith and Washington were on the Warner Bros. wish list back then as well.
There's also the fact that McKay is going to be busy with the sequel to "Anchorman" next year, meaning "Uptown Saturday Night" might not even happen before...

Ben Child watches thirty minutes of Pixar's first fairytale and finds a courageous story with a feminist and Scottish twist
You might expect a studio with films of the quality of Up, Wall-e, Ratatouille and Toy Story 3 to be excused for making the odd turkey, yet there are still those who haven't forgiven Pixar for churning out the distinctly average Cars 2 last year. They're the studio that are often seen as the antidote to bland Hollywood commercialism, so Cars 2's vapidity stuck in the craw of critics almost as much as the sudden availability of entire fleets of branded merchandise. The good news is that the Emeryville-based production company's latest offering, Brave, has the feel of a stout-hearted return to form, one that doesn't look like a strong candidate for a cynical marketing drive.
On paper, the movie appears an easy target for cynics. It began life under a different director,...

Watch Drew's performance with Justin & find out what she did to keep him next to her on stage. Drew Ryniewicz had the time of her life performing with Justin Bieber on the Dec. 22 finale of The X Factor. In fact, she told HollywoodLife.com that she purposely flubbed her lines during rehearsal just to spend more time with the Biebs on stage! "Hmm, what's the word … Santa Claus is coming to Earth?" she recalled about shooting the pre-taped segment with Justin. "Nope sorry, messed it up again. Let's do it again! We need to do the hugging part again!" We think that was really cute of Drew to do -- though it's also pretty awkward if the rumors are true about Selena being in the building while Justin filmed his big performance. As you all know, Drew's a long-time Belieber. Justin even tweeted his support to Drew after she was eliminated from the show!

Los Angeles — The fourth annual Grammy nominations concert Wednesday night (November 30) will include a special performance nearly three decades in the making. Rappers LL Cool J, Common and Lupe Fiasco will join Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five members Melle Mel and Scorpio for the group's classic "The Message" during "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! Countdown to Music's Biggest Night."
The generations-spanning ensemble hit rehearsals hard Tuesday afternoon at the Nokia Theatre, using every minute available to practice. That meant squeezing in extra rehearsal time in a lower-level lobby before they even jumped onstage. While Rick Ross had previously been announced as a performer, he was not present at Tuesday's rehearsals.

Bond, Batman and Titanic can explain the workings of the world, reckons Slavoj Žižek. Danny Leigh joins the superstar philosopher on the set of his latest bizarre voyage into cinema
Slavoj Žižek is in bed. He's wearing cheap pyjamas in a porridgy shade of grey. He looks exactly like the photographs I've seen of him: fag-ash beard, ghostly complexion. I loom over him, and he glowers back. His face is just inches from mine, so close I can feel his breath.
"No, you are wrong!" he hisses. "My dreams were not really mine! That's why I wanted to be reborn!"
None of this is a product of my subconscious. In fact, we're at a studio near Dublin, working on The Pervert's Guide to Ideology, a film in which the Marxist provocateur and bestselling philosopher is starring as himself, albeit in a series of loving re-creations of movie scenes. What's being...

There are very few directors out there who can make one epic-looking big budget film after another and make it look so easy. It's always seemed to be that way for director Joe Johnston who's hopped around making several films from "The Rocketeer," "Jurassic Park III" even to "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." They don't just let anybody take the reigns on those kinds of projects, that's for sure.Joe Johnston is at it again, taking on the directorial reigns with the latest Marvel film "Captain America: The First Avenger." The concept of the album art was to take the cover theme from Nas' debut, Illmatic, and build on it. The 1994 LP featured a picture of a young Nasir Jones, with the Queensbridge projects as the backdrop. Teen superstar Justin Bieber was a mischief prankster. The singing sensation "pranked" his tour mate Willow Smith during a gig in Manchester, England on Sunday, March 20. Before the Manchaster show began, the pop idol wrote on his Twitter, "So the other day Willow decided to try and prank me. Prank Me!! Well now is Phase 1 of my Revenge!! Manchester get ready!!"
The 10-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith had been performing her debut hit "Whip My Hair" when suddenly the Canadian heartthrob interrupted the set with his "crew of pranksters". Surprisingly, one of the frolicsome buffoons coming out with Justin was Willow's elder brother Jaden Smith.
At first, Bieber's manager Scooter Braun and swagger coach Ryan Goode unexpectedly appeared on stage with brightly colored braids and makeups, acting like Willow's backup dancers. Moments later, the "Baby" hitmaker joined his mischievous buddies and paraded around the stage with a cowbell.

Paul MacInnes tuned in at 12:15pm to watch classic 1972 upside-down-ocean-liner drama The Poseidon Adventure. It was a grand end to our week of liveblogging films from the TV. See what happened here
2.24pm: "If you're a blogger and you've been watching with us this week, it's been lovely Channel Four". I don't think that was delivered quite as it was intended. But thanks! We lovely you too!
Conclusions: This film is terrible. High concept, tedious execution, with bizarre relgious allegory layered on top for good measure. At least it was absolutely jam-packed with Seventies cliches - like sexual exploitation and shouting.
It's been an absolute pleasure to share this movie with you. Let's do it again some time!
2.21pm: One last shot of Susan and Nonnie (Hippy's) thighs, and we're free!
Final survivor count (unless the chopper blows up unexpectedly): Borgnine, Susan, Nonny, Mr Rosen, Cagoule Kid, and Mr Red Buttons.

"The Last Exorcism" was one heck of a pleasant surprise: a character-driven horror flick that eschewed gore for sweaty-palmed tension and delivered some first-rate performances from Patrick Fabian as a disenchanted preacher, Ashley Bell as a maybe-possessed-maybe-crazy country girl and Caleb Landry Jones as her seriously creepy brother.
Jones in particular is an actor on the rise, a 20-year-old who graduated from the low-budget "Last Exorcism" to a meaty part in "X-Men: First Class," in which he'll play the sonically-enhanced Banshee.
In a recent interview, "Last Exorcism" director Daniel Stamm went into great detail with MTV News about his working relationship with Jones and why he's so excited to see the young actor in a big studio picture.
Stamm's comments were both insightful and hilarious, so we've decided to reprint them in full. Here's Stamm on future "X-Men" star Caleb Landry Jones…
