It has become a cliché to quote the age-old maxim that you should never meet your heroes. I am also of the belief that you should never write about meeting them either. But I am going to make an exception for Nicolas Roeg, who passed away aged 90 on November 26, 2018. It’s commonly accepted, and certainly in the tributes that have flowed since his death, that Roeg was a genius of the cinema. In his lifetime he was not always held in such lofty regard, as his longtime friend and producing associate Jeremy Thomas was swift to point out when he chastised the U.K. film establishment for its neglect of one of its most visionary talents. “Roeg was one of the major figures but he wasn’t supported by the British Film Industry. There is something about our culture that we don’t revere our greatest filmmakers, especially if they...

The word “cabaret” brings with it tons of evocations, many of which are false. All that cabaret means, really, is a combination of song and storytelling; an artist able to perform as their authentic self. And as an audience member, there is usually booze involved. What could be better than that? Los Angeles, of course, has dozens of cabaret venues throughout the city at which top-tier talent from around the world will drop in for performances. Here are some of the best. Catalina Jazz ClubWhere: HollywoodWhat: With a slogan like “Nothing but the best in jazz,” Catalina has a lot to live up to. Luckily for patrons and performers alike, it meets expectations. Countless jazz stalwarts have graced its stage including Joe Williams, Marcus Miller, and Dizzie Gillespie. However, Catalina has also welcomed performers from outside the strictly jazz realm as well, including talents from musical theater like James Snyder,...

Nothing but the best for Kourtney Kardashian‘s little girl Penelope Scotland!
The 4½-year-old daughter of the reality star is set up in style in her new bedroom, according to photos and a message posted on her mom’s website.
“When we moved into the new house Penelope was ready for a big girl room, but she definitely still wanted a space that was both playful and pink!” writes Kardashian, 37.
“We kept a lot of accents from her previous room, but went for a more sleek and modern feel. I even passed down the ‘Love Me’ neon light that was previously in my bedroom.

Smart, stylish, insightful and brimming with technical inventiveness, Stanley Donen's Two For The Road is a wonderful examination of the modern marriage whose influence can still be felt in Hollywood cinema today, nearly 50 years after it was originally released.Inspired in part by his own marriage, screenwriter Frederic Raphael (Darling, Eyes Wide Shut) penned Two For The Road at the specific request of director Stanley Donen (Singing In The Rain, Charade), after seeing his earlier efforts in 1964's Nothing But The Best. According to Raphael, he deliberately wrote the script in random order, accentuating its episodic structure, as it revisits the various trips from London to the South of France by the same British couple.Mark Wallace (Albert Finney), a successful architect, and his wife Joanna...

Hey look, it's Christian Grey's face! I do believe this is the first (official) still from the anticipated feature adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey that shows us a mostly unobstructed view of Jamie Dornan's face in the title role, and what a nice view it is. The above photo was shared today in celebration of Christian Grey's birthday. He's not quite smiling. But with the brow furrowed slightly, there does seem to be an expression of amusement or maybe curiosity going on there as he sits behind the wheel of what is likely a very expensive automobile. Nothing but the best for the billionaire Christian Grey! This glimpse of Christian follows two other officially released teases of Sam Taylor-Johnson's film, both of which, as it happens, only let us see the back of Grey. There was the Valentine's Day still, which gave us a peek at the...

Wednesday's all-new episodes of Beverly Hills pawn gave us some awesome Hollywood memorabilia, including a one-of-a-kind Beatles film roll among oodles of sparkle. The items were certainly not lacking on their value or appeal whether they were been pawned, sold or purchased and, as expected, neither were the customers. From a witch whose very own ghost told her to sell her brooches, to Neil Armstrong's nephew who wanted $3 million for a motorbike, we were highly entertained by the Beverly Hills Pawn clientele. But who wins our crown for the most entertaining of all? This week that award goes to Ms Judy, a Hollywood dog trainer and her "star" poodle Gabbie. While we had to turn away when she smooched the pooch we loved the tanzanite necklace she pawned in order to "expand" Gabbie's future. It turned out that the pair needed a trip to Europe in order to accomplish this,...

My final blog as The Bachelor. Aside from having hair that looked like a water buffalo, the day I proposed was an exciting day. This damn hair. Maybe it is time for a cut. American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is well aware that the show’s ratings have slipped a little in its current 11th season, but don’t expect him to start panicking. “Whatever bad press we’re getting about these ratings, my God the rest of the [networks] would love [to have these numbers],” he said. Hip-hop star Nicki Minaj opened the show with DJ David Guetta, debuting a new song called "Turn Me On" and then moving into "Where Them Girls At" and "Super Bass." It was a fun performance to open the show and also, in wonderful Nicki fashion, featured the singer wearing a totally crazy outfit.
There were speakers on her butt, clocks on her boobs and what looked like aluminum chaps. Excellent. We're glad she didn't have a wardrobe malfunction, as her outfit reminded us more than a little of a futuristic robot version of Janet Jackson's infamous Super Bowl outfit.
Did you like the songs? "Turn Me On" and "Where Them Girls At" are collaborations between Guetta and Minaj from Guetta's fifth studio album, "Nothing But the Best."
Oh, and did you catch Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift rapping along with "Super Bass"? Super cute. Video below.

"Diamonds are a girl's best friend," or so the saying goes. But this isn't the case on 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.' Especially not when the girl in question is only four years old.
On the new episode (Thu., 10Pm Et on Bravo), Taylor Armstrong throws a birthday party for her four-year-old daughter Kennedy. Nothing but the best will do, so Taylor blows $50,000 on a "tea party" themed gathering for Kennedy. That's fifty ... thousand dollars. In a sense, the party isn't really for Kennedy -- it's more so Taylor can dress up in front of her friends.
Kennedy is overwhelmed by the huge gathering and wants to hide upstairs -- a normal response for a little girl. Then, Taylor presents Kennedy with her birthday present: a diamond necklace. But since Kennedy is four, she doesn't really "get" the concept of diamonds, plus she's starting to cry.

"Clive Donner, who helped launch the careers of actors such as Sir Ian McKellen and Alan Bates, has died at the age of 84," reports the BBC. "He was best known for a series of 1960s films including Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush and What's New Pussycat," which, "released in 1965, featured Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Woody Allen and Ursula Andress in the leading roles. Allen also wrote the screenplay, while Burt Bacharach composed the music."
The BFI's screenonline has a fine biography; let's pick it up in the early 60s, when he's just had a surprise box office hit, Some People (1962). "Despite this success Donner was unable to find a backer for a film version of The Caretaker (1963 [clip above]), written by his friend Harold Pinter, but a private consortium, headed by Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Noël Coward and Peter Sellers, agreed to put up a minimum of £1000 each. Director who captured swinging London's zeitgeist and remade classics for television
For a few years in the 1960s, Clive Donner, who has died aged 84 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease, was among the leading film directors of swinging London. Unfortunately, when London stopped swinging, so did Donner. The four films that made his name were a low-budget adaptation of Harold Pinter's play The Caretaker (1963); Nothing But the Best (1964), a wicked satire on the British class structure; the farcical What's New Pussycat? (1965); and the coming-of-age comedy Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1968).
Already in his 30s when he started directing, Donner gained a reputation for being tuned in to "youth". His debut movie, The Secret Place (1957), a heist drama shot on location in the East End, had David McCallum as a Brandoesque leather-jacketed "crazy mixed-up kid".

You all know my love of wild contraptions, and the creator of this one has my undying love. Besides, all Cadbury Creme Eggs deserve to be smashed – they're gross.
Coming in on the slightly insane side of things, a man has built a 5-story ice castle in his back yard for his wife. The Today Show gang get in some harsh digs to distract from how sweet and magical it is.
Yesterday on The View, the cast of Jersey Shore stopped by and talked all things Gtl (Gym, Tanning, Laundry). Elisabeth also gave Ronnie a chance to address the homophobic rant he went on before getting into a boardwalk fist fight.
