When "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" first premiered on CBS in October 1955, the episodic half-hour anthology series immediately gained immense popularity. Hosted by Hitchcock himself, every episode opened with the director's silhouette and Charles Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette" playing in the background, which became a cultural landmark in itself. As Hitchcock believed that the show's half-hour format did not do justice to the intricate anthology tales of suspense and terror, the episodic duration was subsequently extended when the show was revamped and retitled to "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," which ran from 1962 to 1965.
Per John McCarty and Brian Kelleher's "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: An Illustrated Guide to the Ten-year Television Career of the Master of Suspense," NBC (where the show ended up airing alternatively), after witnessing the success of Hitchcock's show, started planning a brand new mystery/suspense anthology that was set to run from 1957 through 1958. Nothing defined New Hollywood quite like "The Graduate," and for very good reason. The film was chock full of innovation, from the salacious script to the ground-breaking cinematography, but the movie might be best remembered for its incredible cast. The coming-of-age classic features career-defining performances from Anne Bancroft, already a huge star at the time, and Dustin Hoffman, the best actor ever, in one of the first major roles of his long and storied career.
The 1967 film follows Ben, a recent college graduate (as the film's title implies) with an uncertain future and a community of expectant WASPs to answer to. In his summertime languor, he finds his way into the waiting arms of Mrs. Robinson, a middle-aged family friend who persistently pursues our passive hero into his sexual awakening.

When "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" premiered on October 2, 1955, Hitchcock had already proved himself a master of suspense, capable of weaving narratives that were intriguing and often intensely macabre. This anthology series, which ran for almost ten years on television, only featured 18 episodes that were directed by Hitchcock himself — the rest were a heady concoction of anthology tales presented by talented filmmakers, including Ida Lupino and William Friedkin. In the process, Hitchcock set the stage for diverse talents to display their craft while formulating an unforgettable title sequence followed by his iconic introductions, which eased audiences into the tales that ranged from gritty mystery to gruesome horror.
While "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" accommodates a wide range of directorial styles and flair, there is an unmistakable Hitchcockian touch to most of the episodes, where the director imbued his artistic sensibilities in the way shots were handled. Subjective perspectives helped cement aspects of a story...

Long before he made Popeye Doyle race a Brooklyn subway and Regan MacNeil’s head spin, William Friedkin began his career doing live TV. He’d move on to an episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, short documentaries, a Sonny-and-Cher joint (Good Times), theatrical adaptations (The Birthday Party, The Boys in the Band), and then an all-guts-all-glory double shot that instantly made him a New Hollywood power player. But like a lot of directors coming up in the early 1960s, his roots were with actors, words, conflict, and not much more.

One of cinema history’s most iconic car chases: “The French Connection” (1971). A nightmarishly possessed teen in a menacing horror classic: “The Exorcist” (1973). A killer drama in the so-called Matthew McConaughey rejuvenation era known as the McConaissance: “Killer Joe” (2011).
William Friedkin, the grittily virtuosic, famously tough straight-shooter passed away at age 87 Monday, leaving behind a legacy and wide-ranging career as unique, complex and tough as nails as the filmmaker himself was known to be. Both a crafty auteur of nonfiction fare where he got his earnest start and a popular household name thanks to “The Exorcist” — who among us have not spent many a sleepless night traumatized by visions of Linda Blair’s evil grin and weightlessly spinning head? — Friedkin did it all for the moving image, with over 40 credits across film, TV and music videos to his name.

William Friedkin won “Best Director” at the Academy Awards in 1972 for The French Connection, and he was nominated in the same category just two years later for The Exorcist.
Released in theaters in 1973, The Exorcist has been terrifying audiences across generations ever since, widely considered to be one of the best – and scariest – movies ever made.
William Friedkin got his start directing the documentary The People vs. Paul Crump in 1962, and a few years later he directed an episode of the TV series “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.” From there, Friedkin directed films including The Thin Blue Line, Good Times, The Birthday Party, and The Boys in the Band, before winning an Oscar for The French Connection in 1972.

William Friedkin, Academy Award-winning filmmaker of The Exorcist, has died at the age of 87.
The director passed away in Los Angeles, according to his wife Sherry Lansing, a former producer and movie studio executive. Among other films, Friedkin also helmed The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., Sorcerer, and Rules of Engagement.
In the 1970s, Friedkin was part of a generation of directors alongside Francis Ford Coppola, Hal Ashby, and Peter Bogdanovich who blazed their own path through Hollywood. Following Friedkin’s success with The Exorcist, he formed The Directors Company with Coppola and Bogdanovich as a power play for creative independence. However, the short-lived business partnership dissolved not long after they collectively turned down Star Wars.
Friedkin’s entryway into entertainment was a two-year stint in the mailroom of the Chicago TV station WGN after high school, which kickstarted his rise into directing television shows and documentaries.

Weathering is a movie written and directed by Megalyn Echikunwoke starring Alexis Louder.
A medium-length film with a terrific leading lady, Alexis Louder, who is given a chance to shine in one of those roles she loves to play so much. She makes the most of the opportunity in a medium-length film that, unfortunately, will be remembered only for her performance.
That said, we applaud Netflix for changing the rules of the game and releasing this story that, without being little more than an episode of one of those horror series in The Alfred Hitchcock Hour style, knows how to play with what it has and with its length.
Plot
A woman begins to see visions after losing her son in childbirth.

Jane Withers, an actress on both the silver screen and television commercials, died Aug. 7 in Burbank, California. She was 95.
Withers’ daughter, Kendall Errair, confirmed her death to the New York Times. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Withers’ first major Hollywood role came at just 8 years-old in the Shirley Temple movie “Bright Eyes,” a breakout role for Withers that set her on the path of playing rousing, tomboyish girls in films throughout the 1930s. The 20th Century Fox film came out in 1934 and saw Withers playing the role of Jane, a rich kid who delighted in tormenting her toys and wanted a machine gun for Christmas — the exact opposite of the film’s star Shirley Temple, who played her typical role of the adorable, upbeat kid, despite being an orphan.
Withers was born April 12, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia. As a child and in the span of only three years, Withers...

In the documentary 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene multiple talking heads from Guillermo del Toro to Elijah Wood iterate how Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) was a game-changer: in terms of horror tropes, in terms of movie music, in terms of what could be shown on screen, in terms of how filmmakers could play with narrative expectations and so on. But maybe one of its boldest moves was to dictate when people could and should enter a movie theatre to watch a film. Peter Bogdanovich talks about attending the first press screening of Psycho: “As you went in Hitchcock’s voice was blaring on loudspeakers saying ‘Nobody will be allowed in after the picture starts and please don’t reveal the ending.’” From the dawn of cinema, up through the 1950s, audiences would apparently come and go as they pleased, often entering a film half way through. Martha Stewart, an actress whose run of 1940s and ’50s era Hollywood hits included costarring roles in Daisy Kenyon opposite Joan Crawford and In a Lonely Place with Humphrey Bogart, died Feb. 17. She was 98.
Her death was announced by daughter Colleen Shelley.
“The original Martha Stewart left us yesterday,” Shelley tweeted:
She had a new part to play in a movie with all her heavenly friends. She went off peacefully surrounded by her family and cat.

Clare Danes has been cast to star in Apple TV+’s “Essex Serpent,” replacing Keira Knightley who was originally tapped for the lead role.
Last fall, Knightley pulled out of “The Essex Serpent” ahead of its production start in the U.K. due to coronavirus-related child care concerns. The 35-year-old actress has two daughters with her husband, James Righton: 5-year-old Edie and 13-month-old Delilah. Apple TV+ ordered “The Essex Serpent” to series at the end of August with Knightley attached as star and EP.
“The Essex Serpent” follows newly widowed Cora (Danes) who, having being released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.
The series is set to be directed by Clio Barnard. Anna Symon will serve as lead writer. Excluding Knightley,...

Zendaya surprised many by winning Best Drama Actress at the Emmys for playing a troubled teen in “Euphoria,” which made her the youngest winner in that category’s history. Could she follow that by becoming one of the youngest Best Actress champs in Oscar history? She’s a contender for “Malcolm and Marie,” which debuts on Netflix on February 5. That makes it eligible since the academy extended their eligibility period to February 28 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Malcolm and Marie” is a two-hander starring Zendaya and John David Washington as a couple on the brink. It was shot in June during the pandemic, and Netflix paid $30 million for the rights to the film, reportedly beating out HBO, Amazon, Searchlight, MGM, Apple, A24 and Focus Features. A movie cooked up and shot during Covid-19 could be a gamble in this climate — but introduce it with the invigorating talents of John David Washington and Zendaya, and you could have a winning recipe for success, maybe even at the Academy Awards. “Malcolm & Marie” is an actor’s showcase, utilizing the most exquisite instincts and sensibilities of its performers, both of which could find room to squeeze into the lead acting races.
Written and directed by Sam Levinson, the film tells the story of Malcolm, a director, and his girlfriend Marie, who, over the course of an evening following the premiere of his latest movie, examine the highs and lows of their relationship as they await critics’ responses.
Do you know what the Oscars love more than movies? Movies about “the movies.” Sprinkle in a struggling director fighting to express his art through cinema, and Academy voters, especially male ones,...

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I've spent 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out. This is the final Forgotten By Fox entry."Have you ever seen any of your victims?" Robert Shaw is asked mid-way through End of the Game (1975), a line borrowed from The Third Man (1949). This I take to be author Friedrich Dürrenmatt's revenge, on behalf of his native Switzerland, for Orson Welles' celebrated crack about the cuckoo clock in Carol Reed's thriller, which appeared just before he wrote the book this film is based on.End of the Game is adapted from Dürrenmatt's 1950 novel The Judge and His Hangman by the author himself and Maximilian Schell, who also directs, inventively if a little inconsistently. Some scenes have the correct tragic force...

To celebrate Variety’s 115th anniversary, we went to the archives to see how some of Hollywood’s biggest stars first landed in the pages of our magazine. Read more from the archives here.
In 1929, Variety hated the musical comedy “A Wonderful Night” at Broadway’s Majestic Theater (“remarkably dull … the outlook for this one is dreary”). However, there was praise for one of the stars, Archie Leach — who in a few years would change his name to Cary Grant and conquer Hollywood and the world. “Archie Leach makes a handsome leading man, but some of the lines of fearsome insipidity that he has to utter discounted most of his natural grace.”
Handsome, natural grace: Those words offer a hint of Leach/Grant’s appeal. Three years later, in 1932, Variety ran a two-sentence item: “Cary Grant, new leading man on the Paramount contract list, hails from vaudeville where his monicker was Archie Leach.
