Cute-as-a-button, self-owned homosexual Sal Mineo would've been 74 today, which is pretty young considering the man garnered the first of his two Oscar nominations 57 years ago. Rebel Without a Cause made him a star, and though the actor's career went through ups and downs until his murder in 1976, he's legendary for his sheer talent and unprecedented openness about his sexual orientation. Mineo came out in the late '60s, and that decision wasn't even popular among some of his homosexual contemporaries. (Looking at you, Roddy McDowall.)
As a gay man who cares about film history, I find myself seeking out homosexual stories in the subtexts and subversive moments of old films because none existed in the foreground. Watch Anthony Perkins as a gunshy soldier in Friendly Persuasion. Watch Farley Granger gulp libidinously next to John Dall in Rope. You can't help but discover shards of gayness in these parts, whether they're intentionally presented or not,...

HollywoodNews.com: James Franco, the recently named Oscar host, has purchased rights to the new biography, “Sal Mineo,” by writer Michael Gregg Michaud with plans to write and direct the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Mineo is best known for starring with James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause.” Franco won a Golden Globe Award for playing Dean in a 2001 TV film and is getting strong Oscar buzz for his current film “127 Hours.”
Mineo, who was reported to be bisexual or gay, found it hard to find roles after appearing in such films as Rebel and Exodus which both earned him Academy Award nominations. He also starred in The Gene Krupa Story.
He once said: “One minute it seemed I had more movie offers than I could handle, the next, no one wanted me.”
His last movie role was in 1971′s Escape From the Planet of the Apes...

According to THR James Franco has optioned the film rights to Sal Mineo: A Biography, written by Michael Gregg Michaud and intends to write and direct the film, but not star. This is the latest in a series of options by Franco following his recent acquisitions of The Adderall Diaries and Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir.
Actor Sal Mineo was twice nominated for an Academy Award, and enjoyed success as a stage director and recording artist, but most people remember him chiefly for playing troubled, violence-prone youths. His most memorable role was Plato, James Dean’s damaged, love-starved best friend, in the teen angst classic Rebel Without a Cause (1955). His performance resulted in an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor, and his popularity quickly developed.
His acting ability and exotic good looks earned him roles as a Native American boy in Tonka, and as a Jewish emigrant in Otto Preminger’s Exodus,...
