Sixteen years after working together on Wanted, director Timur Bekmambetov and actor Chris Pratt are re-teaming for a sci-fi thriller called Mercy, which just started filming this week – and Bekmambetov has celebrated the start of filming by sharing a picture from the set! Sporting a screenplay written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy will be telling a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.”

Bille August, the two-time Palme d’Or-winning director, found his creative match with the former Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, who reinvented herself as a detail-oriented costume designer on his hit Netflix film “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction.”
The film, which took a decade to bring to life, is nominated for three Robert Awards, the Danish equivalent to the Oscars. A playful royal scandal set in the early 19th century, “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction” was penned by Anders August and based on a 1963 novella by Karen Blixen, the Danish baroness who was played by Meryl Streep in “Out of Africa.” The film revolves around Cazotte, a young portrait painter who considers himself an expert on love matters and is challenged by the Grand Duchess to seduce a young woman, as well as help her secure an heir.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is adding another title to her royal resume: costume designer.
The royal, who celebrated 50 years on the throne in 2022, served as the costume and production designer for Netflix film “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction.” The feature was released in September 2023; Queen Margrethe II was not paid by the production companies for her work on the film.
“Ehrengard” is an adaptation of Karen Blixen’s fairytale about a lady-in-waiting who dodges a royal court painter’s advances. Blixen was a Danish baroness who published under pseudonym Isak Dinesen.
“It was great fun,” Queen Margrethe II told The New York Times of working on the movie adaptation. “I hope that Blixenites will accept the way we’ve done it.”
Queen Margrethe II designed 51 costumes and made 81 decoupages, or collages, for the film. The sets were based on her drawings and other artwork.

It seems fitting that Frozen 2 is a film about change. As the animated sequel was being made, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and especially Jennifer Lee — who directed the original and sequel with Chris Buck and also wrote both screenplays — were going through some pretty big metamorphoses of their own.
The Oscar-winning 2013 musical Frozen, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, followed the tale of two princess sisters, Elsa and Anna, forced to grow up isolated from each other and the world because of Elsa's potentially dangerous magic ability to conjure ice. Disney has - for now - pulled the plug on its planned animated movie, Gigantic.
Walt Disney Animation Studios has pulled the plug on Gigantic, its long-announced Jack And The Beanstalk-inspired movie. The film had originally been given a 2018 release date, before recently being shunted back to 2020. But now – and this hasn’t happened with an announced Disney animated feature in as long as we can remember (King Of The Elves, based on a Philip K Dick story, is the only one that springs to mind) – the film has been scrapped altogether.
Ed Catmull, president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, released a statement that reads:
It’s impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn’t working.

When Frozen arrived in cinemas in 2013, its quick progression from hit movie to global phenomenon took many by surprise. As it turned out, the world clearly needed a story of sisters helping each other, and friends working together for the benefit of their community. Its global box office take of $1.3 billion earned it a spot in the top ten highest grossing films of all time – ninth, to be exact – and made the prospect of a sequel inevitable. However, there’s been little in the way of news or fanfare around Frozen 2 – until now.
Returning cast member Josh Gad – who plays snowman Olaf – has Tweeted a photograph taken as he began recording lines for the developing sequel:

Since DreamWorks Animation got snapped up by Universal, it seems several films have been cancelled. So what's actually happening?
If we imagine that the acquisition of Pixar by Disney was some kind of seismic shift for the Emeryville animation house, then Dreamworks Animation, by comparison, must be living in the red-hot cradle of a hyperactive volcano.
Animated films take so long, from concept to production to release, that recent Dreamworks titles are making their eventual escape from a corporate context which bears little relation to where they were conceived.
The Croods is a particularly good example. It was, originally, going to be a stop-motion film produced at Aardman with a screenplay by John Cleese. Without it ever being cancelled outright, this project continued to evolve, as Dreamworks twisted and turned like a kaleidoscope around it, in to the final product. The plot was different. The characters were different.

Disney has made an entire industry off of re-telling classic fairy tales. They made a habit of doing in in their heyday, and have been returning to some of these stories in both live-action and animated form. The most recent animated re-telling came in the form of Frozen, a reinterpreted version of The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.
Of course, there's no way Disney was going to abandon that strategy any time soon, and on the animated front, the next film to do that will be one entitled Gigantic, which is set to hit theaters on November 21, 2018. Of course, there's no way Disney was going to abandon that strategy any time soon, and on the animated front, the next film to do that will be one entitled Gigantic, which is set to hit theaters on November 21, 2018. ★★☆☆☆ Four years on from Rupert Sanders' critically derided yet financially lucrative Snow White and The Huntsman we have the delayed, inevitable follow-up: The Huntsman: Winter's War. Chris Hemsworth is back as the axe-wielding hero in a loose retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen. In many ways this is an adult Frozen with Gothic sensibilities by way of The Lord Of The Rings, making for a derivative pastiche of the past two decades' cinematic fantasy offerings. Replacing Sanders in the director's chair this time around is former visual effects artist Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.

"Creating animation means creating a fictional world. That world soothes the spirit of those who are disheartened and exhausted from dealing with the sharp edges of reality." Time for another stunning look at the work of Hayao Miyazaki in a 16-minute tribute video about "The Essence of Humanity" in his films. Made by Lewis Bond, the same guy behind Channel Criswell who also made the Colour in Storytelling video, it's an extensive look at Miyazaki's focus on the emotional intricacies of his subjects, and storytelling in his films. He even explores some of his history, referencing how the Russian animated film The Snow Queen (1957) first showed the potential of human emotion in animation. This is a good one - take a watch. Description from YouTube: "Fantasy and realism blend perfectly in the world of Miyazaki. Today we look at the genius behind it all." Thank you to The Film Stage...

Jessica Chastain will be in The Huntsman, Universal's forthcoming Snow White-less spin-off of 2012's badass Snow White redux, Deadline reports. Chastain's role is unknown, but, in some capacity, she'll join Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Nick Frost, and Emily Blunt. The movie is slated for an April 2016 release, and will serve as a prequel to show how the titular huntsman and Queen Ravenna crossed paths before meeting Snow White. Blunt will reportedly play this film's central villain, The Snow Queen, so maybe Chastain will play a young intelligence officer hellbent on coordinating the assassination of said villainous ruler.

It turns out that The Huntsman is being set up as a rather star-studded affair. Joining the previously announced Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, it has now been confirmed that the movie will be bringing aboard Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt and Nick Frost (who played the dwarf Nion in the sequel's predecessor, Snow White and the Huntsman). This news comes from Deadline, which got the scoop on the Jessica Chastain story and confirmed reports from back in January that said Emily Blunt was in talks. There are currently no details available about the role that Chastain will be playing in the movie, but Blunt is said to be playing a very key role. According to previous reports, she will be Charlize Theron.s evil sister and the central villain of the film, The Snow Queen. The situation with Nick Frost is a bit more tricky. You may remember a story...

I really enjoyed Snow White and the Huntsman. But then, I’ve never had any problems with Kristen Stewart as an actress, and also the production design of that world is a fantastic distraction from any faults the movie has anyway. That admitted, I haven’t been terribly excited for the sequel, which is simply titled The Huntsman and surprisingly still a thing in spite of not involving the main character of Snow White (Stewart) nor the original director (Rupert Sanders). Moving forward on what’s basically become a spin-off more than a straight-up follow-up makes Universal seem desperate for franchises even if they lose their primary element. It’s like Disney doing Frozen 2 but centered solely on Kristoff. Except with a property that nobody really cares that much about. Speaking of Frozen, The Huntsman has a new addition that gives it something to start getting excited for. According to The Wrap, Into the Woods...

Right after her big win at the Critics. While there is no official confirmation, sources say that negotiations are in order, and Blunt is up to play Charlize Theron.s evil sister and villain of the film, The Snow Queen. The Huntsman has been an ever-changing project. First, it was supposed to be a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman featuring the lead character, Snow White portrayed by Kristen Stewart. Then it was teased that Stewart.s role would be slight, and the huntsman from the original, Chris Hemsworth would star. And finally Stewart was cut all together, and the film title was retitled simply The Huntsman. It.s been a strange ride, and with only two cast members verified (Hemsworth as the...

There are some films that know how to hit you right in your emotional centre, and more often than not, those films are made by Disney.
Whether it’s Hercules or Mulan, Toy Story or Up, or even Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, pretty much all of Disney’s movies know how best to tug at the heartstrings and give you a nice moral message all in one go, usually with some pop culture references to help the medicine go down.
Frozen is no different, and is probably the most successful, being the highest grossing animated film of all time. The adaption of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is chock-full of life lessons that little girls (and boys) will keep with them forever, and that’s not just talking about always taking the opportunity to build a snowman.

Korean artist Na Young Wu’s manga style illustrations of characters in Western folktales wearing hanbok (traditional Korean formal wear) made the rounds on the Internet this past weekend. All of the photos I came across were really low resolution. So I went on a search for the largest versions of each image. Luckily, I just so happen to speak Korean, so I was able to navigate through random sites and forums on Naver (South Korea’s answer to Google) to find many of these hi-res images. I’ve provided the largest resolution files I could find, and came across a few other illustrations from the artist that I didn’t see on other sites.

At this time last year, "Frozen," Disney Animation Studio's icy adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," was still on its way to becoming a box office phenomenon and marketing juggernaut. The movie had just opened in theaters a month before and the accolades and box office had yet to pile up (eventually the film would become the first animated feature to cross the $1 billion mark, become the most successful animated film ever and pick up a pair of Oscars, including one for Best Animated Feature). Now, "Frozen" is everywhere: the annual Disney Christmas day parade has been renamed the "Frozen" Celebration, the Disneyland castle now gets "Frozen" every night, workers are currently toiling away on turning Epcot's Norway pavilion into a "Frozen"-themed attraction, and in March, a short film spin-off, "Frozen Fever," debuts in front of Disney's live action "Cinderella." Things have changed for the...

Frozen may have come out last year, but if 2014 was any indication, we’re never going to let it go, let it goooooo. We’re never going to let that pun go either. Anyway, Frozen was 2014’s biggest selling DVD and best selling album on iTunes, became a two-time Oscar winner, and inspired everything from toys to theme park rides to wedding dresses.

This week's Once Upon A Time is a Snow Queen special. Here's Kylie's review of Shattered Sight...
This review contains spoilers.
4.10 Shattered Sight
The Snow Queen’s storyline comes to a close in an episode that is part fresh and entertaining, part groan-worthy.
First, the good. The Snow Queen’s curse causes the people of Storybrooke to see the worst in each other, and that brings out secrets, humorous resentments, and best of all, the Evil Queen. Snow, Charming, and Regina dredge up old quarrels and exchange a whole lot of sassy barbs (Kristoff gets in on the action a bit, too). Pair that with an epic Snow/Regina swordfight, and the three of them steal the show this week.
My biggest complaint about the curse is that it doesn’t last longer. I would have liked to see more characters interact under its influence. Also, they downplay the things...

We look at legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki's rise to success.
When Hayao Miyazaki stepped into a Tokyo conference room and announced his retirement from feature filmmaking on September 6th, 2013, it marked the end of a career which stretched back to the early 1960s. Through such films as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle, Miyazaki entertained and beguiled a global audience with his lighter-than-air storytelling and captivating characters. Somehow, his films managed to be both universal and deeply personal. But how did Miyazaki, born to a well-to-do family on January 5th, 1941, become one of the most respected animators in Japan?
Miyazaki grew up in the post-war comics boom led by the father of manga, Osamu Tezuka, and dreamed of becoming a comic artist himself. When he went to university, however, Miyazaki studied political science and economics rather than the arts. But he remained dedicated...
