Steven Lightfoot Developing ‘Scot Harvath’ Books For Sony Pictures Television Under New Overall Deal
Exclusive: Steven Lightfoot has been tapped to develop a series adaptation of the Scot Harvath books from New York Times bestseller Brad Thor, under a relatively fresh overall deal with Sony Pictures Television that has previously gone unreported, Deadline has learned.
We’re told that the deal for scripted drama development across cable and streaming came together last year, ahead of the WGA strike. As previously reported, Lightfoot is also currently in business with the studio as co-showrunner alongside Oren Uziel of Sony Pictures Television’s untitled Spider-Man Noir series, based on the Marvel comic, for MGM+ and Prime Video.
In addition to scripting the as-yet-untitled Scot Harvath series, Lightfoot is exec producing alongside Thor; the John Wick franchise’s Chad Stahelski and his colleagues Alex Young and Jason Spitz at 87Eleven Entertainment; Shaun Redick & Yvette Yates Redick of Impossible Dream Entertainment; Scott Cross & Sean Cross of Cross Pictures,...

Industry delegates sent a clear message to the filmmakers behind “Nothing But the Truth about Extraterrestrials”: We want to believe.
A non-fiction dive into the latest science behind little green men, the multilingual doc proved quite a hot item at this year’s Venice Production Bridge gap-financing market, fielding three bids for distribution, another three co-production offers, and an invitation to screen as a work-in-progress from a leading international festival, “Extraterrestrials” co-director Eric Ruel told Variety.
Longtime creative partners Ruel and Guylaine Maroist are co-directing and producing through their joint La Ruelle Films banner, which recently scored a sizeable non-fiction hit with the social doc “Backlash: Misogyny in the Digital Age.” After tackling political spectacle with 2014’s satirical “God Save Justin Trudeau,” and online malaise with “Backlash,” the filmmakers now look to the stars for a so-called “cinema verité meets sci-fi” exposé on the state of the alien unknown.

Sports entertainment powerhouse WWE, which has agreed to merge with Endeavor’s UFC to create a live sports and entertainment titan, reported higher second-quarter earnings and record revenue on Wednesday, exceeding Wall Street expectations for several financial metrics. The performance was powered by a record-breaking WrestleMania in early April, as well as higher viewership and live events ticket sales.
WWE’s latest edition of its big annual event, the two-night WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles, on April 1 and 2, broke various records. Some of Jimmy Kimmel‘s jokes at the opening of the 95th Academy Awards involved two men who weren’t even in the theater.
After noting that Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron — who wasn’t nominated for his blockbuster sequel — wasn’t in attendance, Kimmel quipped to the Oscars audience: “How does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed Avatar? What do they think he is? A woman?” He also joked that “You know a show is too long when even James Cameron” — whose movies clock in at two-plus hours — “can’t sit through it.”

Producer-star Richard Widmark may have thought he was inventing a new kind of spy film but his adaptation of an Alistair MacLean novel just grinds the Cold War grist, mixing good atmosphere with unconvincing action derring-do. The handsome production makes good use of Austrian and Swiss locations and the unfamiliar cast is a big assist. German star Sonja Ziemann gets the plum role, but Hollywood’s discovery is the lovely Senta Berger.

There’s no doubting Orton’s ability in the ring. When he debuted in his early-20’s, he had all the tools. For a good run of about seven years, he was one of the most interesting and intense characters on WWE television.
But somewhere around 2013 or 2014, that changed. Orton felt like he was simply going through the motions. As we pointed our in our Backlash review, he became the king of the three-star, just-good-enough-but-never-great match.
Orton’s effort with Edge on Sunday’s pay-per-view was excellent. His showing on Raw last night against Christian was even better.
In case you missed it: Christian came to Raw last night and he was looking to avenge his fallen friend, Edge. Christian, who has been retired, and Orton were scheduled to take part in an unsanctioned fight to end the show.
All night, Ric Flair was trying to talk Christian out of the fight.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will not move forward with HBO alt-universe Civil War drama Confederate.
Confederate, a long-mooted HBO television project from Game of Thrones masterminds David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is officially dead.
In keeping with Ned Stark’s idiom that “the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword,” HBO president Casey Bloys himself confirmed to TV Line that Benioff and Weiss’s Confederate was cancelled, thus ending years of speculation over a potential powder keg of a project. However, given an array of events occurring ever since its original pickup, one did not need to be Bran the Broken to have envisioned this outcome for the snake-bit series.
While the Confederate television project may have arrived on HBO’s backlog back in 2017 under the auspicious purview of the premium cable channel’s at-the-time invaluable Game of Thrones creators/showrunners,...

Exclusive: Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to Familyship, a one-hour dramedy written by Jon Harmon Feldman. It hails from Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz’s Random Hill Productions and was sold before Gwartz’s recent appointment as Evp Development, Comedy and Drama at 20th Century Fox TV.
This marks the second high-profile sale for Random Hill this season. In a competitive situation, ABC in September gave a put pilot commitment to Backlash, a drama examining the aftermath of a child rescue from Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss, Random Hill Production and ABC Studios, part of Disney TV Studios.
Familyship — step-parents, ex-spouses, half-siblings and co-parenting — the new modern family is a melting pot of first marriages, second families and mixed ethnicities. Familyship is a soapy, character-based dramedy about a sprawling, multi-ethnic clan, that like many 21st Century families,...

Gilligan’s Island star Russell Johnson has passed away at the age of 89. He was a full-time volunteer for AIDS research fundraising since his son David died of AIDS in 1994. And speaking of classic TV, The Partridge Family‘s Dave Madden has died at the age of 82.
