Six years before his death in 1996, “Rent” composer Jonathan Larson began performing a solo semi-autobiographical musical “Tick, Tick…Boom!” about a young struggling composer named Jon who fears that he has made the wrong career choice. After his death, Larson’s show was expanded into a three-person piece by David Auburn that ran in London, off-Broadway, and as a national tour. Now it is an acclaimed new Netflix movie directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who appeared in a Encores production of the musical in 2014) and starring Andrew Garfield.
The composer bio movie genre has long been a favorite of Hollywood, especially during its Golden Age. But these bio-pics played fast and loose with the facts. The Production Code prevented these films from exploring the fact that Cole Porter and Lorenz Hart were gay. And some of these composers and/or their families were still alive and wanted a certain image presented on the big screen.

When I heard that JoJo Siwa was performing a “Dancing with the Stars” routine inspired by “It” on “Horror Night,” I thought, if she’s not playing Pennywise then I quit the show! Thankfully, that wish came true thanks to some pretty excellent work by the “DWTS” costume and makeup teams. Still, I wasn’t exactly sure how a jazz routine to Cole Porter‘s “Anything Goes” would go with a homicidal clown motif, but that too turned out to be a stellar match. Watch Siwa’s routine with Jenna Johnson above, and see what the judges had to say about it below.

There were plenty of treats — and only tricks of the intentionally choreographed variety — in store during Dancing With the Stars‘ Halloween episode on Monday.
Of course, the biggest fright for the Season 30 contestants likely came last week, when Spice Girls alum Mel C was unexpectedly eliminated. But the fear of an untimely exit seemed to work in many couples’ favor on Monday, with season-best performances and perfect scores popping up like that hand at the end of Carrie.

“Dancing with the Stars” will miss Halloween by just one day (wait ’til next year though), so it has to spook it up six days early on Monday’s Horror Night.
The remaining 10 couples will perform routines inspired by scary movies… and also “The Vampire Diaries”? One of these is not like the others. But, yes, Suni Lee and Sasha Farber will do a tango for the Salvatore bros and Elena Gilbert, we guess. JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson have “It,” so expect them to clown around. Meanwhile, Melora Hardin and Artem Chigvintsev‘s “Cujo”-inspired jive will be to “Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog.” Incredible pairing. If no one’s dressed up as a dog, we riot.

When Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981, it was like a jolt of lightning from out of the past. As with George Lucas’ Star Wars before it, here was a throwback to many of the cinematic touchstones high and low that Baby Boomers grew up with: Saturday morning serials, prestige Oscar winners from yesteryear, and even boys’ pulp magazines were sifted through, borrowed from, and recontextualized into one of the most thrilling action-adventure movies anyone had ever seen. Somehow Lucas, who was a producer on the project, director Steven Spielberg, and the whole Indiana Jones team were able to craft a movie simultaneously retro and new.
Of course the younger generations who were swept up in Indy’s adventures may not have noticed any of this. They were here to see Indy outrun a boulder. And as the years have passed, Raiders of the Lost Ark and the...

As news of Jessica Walter’s passing traveled across social media, fans of the sharp-tongued, icy, hard-hearted, boozy Lucille Bluth — the Mommie Dearest of “Arrested Development” — responded with GIFs including some of her best quips. “I don’t understand the question and I won’t respond to it.” “Here’s some money, go see a Star War.” “I’d rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona.” “Get me a vodka rocks… and a piece of toast.” “Sometimes a diet is the best defense.” “It’s one banana, Michael, what could it cost? 10 dollars?”
While Lucille will always be Walter’s most iconic character — not only due to her amazing comic timing and throaty delivery — there was so much more to her impressive six-decade career.

Guns N’ Roses did not arrive fully formed on L.A.’s Sunset Strip, howling “Sweet Child o’ Mine” with all the might and charisma that made the song a hit in 1988. They only achieved the proper cocktail of sensitivity and machismo after the five musicians in Gn’R’s classic lineup found each other in the mid-Eighties. Long before any of them had even dreamt of the songs on Appetite for Destruction, Indiana natives Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin were cutting their teeth in the bands Axl, Hollywood Rose,...

Ida Lupino could fall into any number of categories, yet with a significance that remains almost immeasurable, perhaps the one word best describing this groundbreaking artist is simply this: she was a pioneer. Born February 4, 1918, in South London, Lupino belonged to a revered family of entertainers. Her mother, actress Connie O’Shea (also known as Connie Emerald), and her father, music hall comedian Stanley Lupino, were part of an ancestral dynasty of performers, and young Ida was accordingly encouraged to take the stage during her earliest years. Emma Chamberlain is going decidedly lo-fi with her latest business venture -- which is also bound to help fans get their lives together in quarantine.

The hard cover, 240-page book -- which is priced at $30 and currently available for preorder -- joins other business ventures that the 19-year-old has launched to date, including coffee company Chamberlain Coffee, a merch operation, and a podcast dubbed Anything Goes.

Harry Connick Jr. has already heard enough people ask him, “Cole Porter, who’s that?” He even says a younger person mistook Porter for Nat King Cole (No, Porter did not write “The Christmas Song”). Fortunately, this won’t stop younger audiences from enjoying Harry Connick Jr: A Celebration of Cole Porter at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway.
Connick’s residency runs from through December 29th, with a 25-piece orchestra and rolling stage sets. This is the jazz musician’s third concert on Broadway, and perhaps the most extravagant, showcasing all of his talents: singing,...

Returning to Broadway, Harry Connick Jr. chooses his muse wisely and well, taking the stage in an attractively modern, multi-media setting to celebrate that most sophisticated of the American songbook’s founders, Cole Porter.
At its frequent best, Harry Connick Jr.: A Celebration of Cole Porter, opening tonight at the Nederlander Theatre, pairs Porter’s songwriting genius with Connick’s superb musicianship, supple, ear-pleasing vocals and a brash confidence that pushes the music from the comfort of classic pop into bolder, jazzier terrain. Connick, with his years on American Idol, movie screens and concert stages, is certainly the most popular interpreter of American standards, and he takes fine advantage of that good will, unafraid to slip in an occasional dissonance or to slow down a vocal like a train creeping to its halt. Where Connick leads, his audience knows to follow.

In Cole Porter’s 1934 song Anything Goes, the composer noted, “In olden days, a glimpse of stocking/Was looked on as something shocking/But now, God knows/Anything goes.”
Mr. Porter, meet Ryan Reynolds.
Mimicking the grand old Hollywood tradition of congratulating a film for beating your box office record, Reynolds added a distinctly off-color but oddly appropriate twist to his felicitations via Twitter, as Joker has become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, topping the Reynolds-starring Deadpool and its 2018 sequel.
Joker is expected to ease past the $800 million mark this weekend, and has already blown out the previous $785 million record of Deadpool 2.
The congratulatory message is a tradition that started in 1977 when Star Wars overtook Jaws as the domestic box office champ, besties Steven Spielberg and George Lucas took out trade ads congratulating each other.
After that first ad, Lucas took one out congratulating Spielberg for E.T.

From E.T. II to Robopocalypse, here are some of the most interesting movies Steven Spielberg never made…
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Having excelled in both the artistic and commercial side of American cinema for almost 50 years, Steven Spielberg knows how to get a movie made. Showing no signs of slowing down, the director has 33 feature films under his belt to date and many other films where he’s credited as a producer, including those made by his companies Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Pictures.
Some of those films include projects he was originally intended to direct but were eventually set up for other filmmakers to helm, including Rain Man, Big Fish, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, American Sniper, and Interstellar, to name a few. Pop music star Tommy James and film producer Barbara DeFina are developing the biopic “Me, the Mob and the Music,” based on James’ autobiography.
DeFina, whose credits include Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” and “GoodFellas,” and James have tapped three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall to helm the film adaptation from a screenplay by Matthew Stone (“Intolerable Cruelty”).
James was the leader of Tommy James and the Shondells with No. 1 singles for “Hanky Panky” and “Crimson and Clover” along with a dozen other Top 40 hits, including “I Think We’re Alone Now”, “Mirage”, “Mony Mony”, “Sweet Cherry Wine”, and “Crystal Blue Persuasion.” He has sold an estimated 100 million records.
The book, co-written with Martin Fitzpatrick and published in 2011, centers on James’ years at Roulette Records and his complex and sometimes terrifying relationship with mobster Morris Levy, also known as the “Godfather of the Music Business.” Levy operated through payola and strong-arm tactics.

Details are still emerging about what precisely went down between Taylor Swift and Big Machine president/CEO Scott Borchetta prior to news of the label group’s sale to manager Scooter Braun going public on June 30th, but the ownership of Swift’s master recordings is a crucial component. The superstar entertainer’s catalog, six multi-platinum albums packed to the gills with hit singles spanning country and pop, is clearly a huge asset that helped the label’s valuation.

It used to be that sitcoms in the ‘60s had all sorts of nutty “what-if” premises that required a chasm-sized suspension of disbelief from viewers. What if an astronaut kept an attractive female genie in a lamp (“I Dream of Jeannie”)? What if a witch tried to pass herself off as an average suburban housewife (“Bewitched”)? What if you mother was car (“My Mother the Car”)?
“Younger,” the brainchild of Darren Star that is based on a 2005 novel by Pamela Redmond Satran, is by no means that outlandish. The premise only slightly strains credibility as Liza Miller, a 40-year-old divorcee and mother of a teen daughter, who is desperately struggling to find a job at a book publishing house after her ex gambled away their savings and house.
Alas, most recruiters think this oldster isn’t hip enough to deal with the latest trends in social media and wouldn’t...

On “The Voice” finale on Monday, the Top 4 artists performed two solos apiece. The goal for each contestant was to stream the most songs on Apple Music/iTunes by Tuesday at 7 a.m Et/4 a.m. Pt so that they reaped the benefit of a five-times vote multiplier.
We can report the following results: Maelyn Jarmon from Team John Legend registered enough sales to have earned the Apple Music Bonus for the third week running for her chart-topping performances of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and “Wait for You.” While her duet with Legend on “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole doesn’t count towards the number of streams, that it also made the top 10 on iTunes reinforces her frontrunner status to win season 16 of “The Voice.”
Of Maelyn’s competition, two of the three men on Team Blake Shelton cracked the top 10 on Apple Music with one of their solos on the May 20 show.

Hey, The Voice fans. Tonight, May 20, 2019, the final 4 contestants Maelyn Jarmon, Gyth Rigdon, Dexter Roberts and Andrew Sevener did indeed hit the stage to perform for America's vote. They all performed three songs. They performed a new cover, a duet with their respective coach and an original song. Of course, all the coaches/judges: Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and John Legend were on hand. Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine had no artists in tonight's final. Maelyn Jarmon hit the stage first to perform a song titled, "Wait for You.” Afterwards, Adam told Maelyn, "Everyone in the finale is fantastic, but I think you should win this thing. It has nothing to do with the coaches. I loves you, and I think you're incredible." John said, "I loved the song. It was the perfect choice. It was sung with so much heart. Flawless." Next, Andrew Sevener hit the stage...
