Scream Factory's Hammer Films collection just keeps growing! New this week from the label comes the 1962 version of The Phantom of the Opera. Directed by one of Hammer's better-known directors, Terence Fischer, this iteration of the classic tale stars the great Herbert Lom as the Phantom and Professor Petrie. Also onboard are Heather Sears as Christine, and Hammer alums Edward de Souza as kindly opera producer Harry and Michael Gough as the lecherous opera owner Lord Ambrose d'Arcy. You all know the Gaston Leroux story: young ingenue opera singer...

"Was I dreaming or did I just see a bank held up?" asks Sterling Hayden during Nicholas Ray's sole Republic Studios directorial outing, "Johnny Guitar." The 1954 film, which arrives on blu-ray Tuesday as part of Olive Films' carefully curated home video cull of Paramount titles (Viacom absorbed the Republic catalog in the 90's) is paced with such unapologetic relentlessness that midway through the film its title character needs a reality check. The 1950's were the American western's greatest decade and 1954, which also included Robert Aldrich's "Apache" and "Vera Cruz," as well as Allen Dwan's "Silver Lode," was a banner year for revitalizing the genre with more accurate history, psychological nuance, cynicism and violence than had come before. On a superficial level the red dirt world of "Johnny Guitar" overlaps the plea for racial justice of "Apache," the treatise on mercenary...

With 2010 only a week over, it already feels like best-of and top-ten lists have been pouring in for months, and we’re already tired of them: the ranking, the exclusions (and inclusions), the rules and the qualifiers. Some people got to see films at festivals, others only catch movies on video; and the ability for us, or any publication, to come up with a system to fairly determine who saw what when and what they thought was the best seems an impossible feat. That doesn’t stop most people from doing it, but we liked the fantasy double features we did last year and for our 3rd Writers Poll we thought we'd do it again.
I asked our contributors to pick a single new film they saw in 2010—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they saw in 2010 to create a unique double feature.

The films of director Allan Dwan—whose career was one of the longest and most fruitful in Hollywood history, ranging from 1911 to 1961—have multiple virtues to recommend them. But the one I tend to value most is Dwan's unhurried, confident storytelling style. It's exemplified, to a fair extent, in a pair of shots from 1954's Silver Lode, arguably the best of several Westerns Dwan made in the mid-'50s for Rko and producer Benedict Bogeaus. They occur in the opening sequence. It's a bright sunny day in the film's eponymous town, and some kids are playing. Benignly—these aren't the deprived/depraved ragamuffins of The Wages of Fear, they're good American kids, damnit! But the sound of approaching horses makes them look up, and move back in fear. Whoever's approaching isn't going to ride around them.
Pretty much any other director would cut to a direct reverse shot, probably from a low angle,...
