According to director Capt. Garson Kanin, when the movie won the 1945 Academy Award as Best Documentary Feature, the Oscar went to uncredited producer Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
This film's initial telecast took place 11/19/1945 on New York City's pioneer television station WNBT (Channel 1). In Fort Worth it first aired 6/10/1949 on WBAP (Channel 5), in Washington DC and in Detroit 6/17/1949 on WOIC (Channel 9) and on WXYZ (Channel 7), and in Los Angeles 3/18/1950 on KTTV (Channel 11).
Marc Blitzstein composed a score for the US version, but it was rejected. William Alwyn's music for the UK version was retained instead.
In the introduction, Eisenhower praises the "Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen," not mentioning the Marines, who also fought on the Western European front.
