After two straight years of all-white acting nominees in 2015 and 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences responded to the #OscarsSoWhite issue by inviting a far more diverse and younger field of talent both behind and in front of the camera to join. And though there are miles to go until there is true diversity, the academy’s nominees and winners are beginning to reflect our culture.
Last year, “Moonlight” became the first Best Picture winner with an all-black cast. Its director Barry Jenkins shared the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar with Tarell Alvin McCraney, while Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor. Viola Davis also took home Best Supporting Actress for “Fences.”
This year’s black nominees include Jordan Peele, a triple nominee for producing, directing and writing Best Picture contender “Get Out,” which also scored a Best Actor nomination for Daniel Kaluuya. Two-time winner Denzel Washington is nominated for “Roman J.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to urge unity among Americans after violence broke out at a white nationalist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia. “We All must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America,” Trump wrote. “Lets come together as one!” A later tweet used typically Trumpian language to describe the turn of events in the Virginia city, which prompted the state’s governor to declare a state of emergency: “Charlottesville sad!” We All must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for.

A little while back, I had the distinctive honor of talking to horror film director Nick Millard, the genius behind Criminally Insane, Death Nurse, and dozens of other wonderful films. Mister Millard has been in the biz since the 1960s, starting out making sexploitation films like Uta and Nympho. In 1975 he went into horror with Criminally Insane, and in 1977 he made action movie history with .357 Magnum. Nick has always been one of my all-time favorite directors, ranking with Norbert Moutier, Todd Sheets, James Bryan, and Doris Wishman, so I had to restraint my inner fanboy to bring these words to print. Take it away, Nick!
Adam Mudman – I’ll kick things off in the best way possible; by asking how you got your start. How did this all begin? How were you raised, and how did it impact your decision to become a filmmaker?
Nick Millard – I remember how it started.

Who: Midi Matilda
Current Gig: The dynamic duo of Logan Grime and Skyler Kilbornmidi make up Midi Matilda, a band that, in its brief five months of existence, has rocketed almost instantly into the ranks of the Bay Area's indie-pop vanguard. On the strength of a single Ep and handful of inventive music videos (including "Ottawa," which is getting its world premiere right here right now at the top of this story), the band has sold out every show it's played and seems uniquely poised for imminent world takeover.
Current 'Hood: Logan grew up in San Rafael and lives in San Francisco's Noe Valley. Skylar grew up in central Texas and lives in Berkeley.
What's your favorite place in the Bay Area?
Skylar: Urban Ore in Berkeley. It's a used materials shop and the idea behind is that it replaces a lot of the things that would go into landfills.

Here we are at the final chapter of our in-depth interview with "Ghost Adventures" star Nick Groff. Thus far we've covered the crew's beginnings as well as Nick's greatest fears. Now it's time to check out his view on skeptics, what's next, and your questions.
"It doesn’t bother me whatsoever," says Groff of the myriad people trying to discredit or debunk what they do. "Everybody has their own mind to make up. At the end of the day I’m not here to be the one to try and convince everyone. You have to go out there and have your own personal experience. The key is to go out and experience it for yourself and try it with an open mind. You can’t be one-sided in this world. There are too many unexplainable things out there that have been happening for centuries and centuries. From people talking about...

There are many actors who might get a 24-film set released which would make for a collection of great and/or important films, but few would be so filled with legendary efforts. This is not only true today, as The Humphrey Bogart Essential Collection makes its way to stores, but it will probably always be true. The combination of talent, charisma, and timing is unlikely to come together in such a way again, and no matter what actors come along, none of them will exist in the right decade.
Certain films may leap to mind, of course, like – Casablanca, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, etc. – and these giants are wonderful to own, but the collection really gets its value from some of the films that aren’t on the short list of titles that everyone automatically thinks of when they hear his name.

No 76: Errol Flynn 1909-1959
Flynn was born in Tasmania, the son of an eminent marine biologist, and early on developed a passion for the sea and a reputation as a rebel. Spotted by a Warner Brothers talent scout while a young, very minor actor in England, he became an overnight Hollywood star in 1935 as a last-minute replacement for Robert Donat as the swashbuckling hero of Captain Blood. By 1936 he was the leading contender to play Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind.
Flynn was tall, slim, graceful, debonair with a neatly trimmed moustache, a winning smile, a hearty, self-mocking laugh. Everything he did, both on screen and off, contributed to his legendary status: the colonial background (he claimed to be a descendant of Fletcher Christian); the celebrated characters he played (General Custer, Robin Hood); his sexual conquests; his prodigious phallic dimensions (according to Truman Capote in Music for Chameleons,...

Best remembered for swashbuckling epics such as "The Adventures of Robin Hood," Australian-born star Errol Flynn also graced eight popular sagebrush sagas at the peak of his stardom.
"Virginia City" (1940), the centerpiece of the four titles collected in "The Errol Flynn Warner Bros. Westerns Collection" (out today), is a follow-up to Flynn's enormously popular Technicolor Western debut "Dodge City," which was also directed by the studio's top director, Michael Curtiz ("Casablanca," "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Mildred Pierce").
