- Mrs. Norwood: Don't ring, darling, you might wake the servants. You know, I practically adjust my life to suit theirs. But I don't mind, really, it's part of the New Plan or New Deal, whatever you call it, and I, I don't mind, it keeps me young and patriotic.
- Sharon Norwood: Why did you lie to me?
- James 'Jim' Branch: If you were looking at what I'm looking at you'd know why I lied to you.
- Hank Parr: You got a mind like Einstein, boss.
- James 'Jim' Branch: Thanks!
- Hank Parr: I mean Mac Einstein, that runs the lunchroom down on Beesy Street.
- James 'Jim' Branch: I wonder what could have been his reason for killing her?
- Detective Room Guard: Well, they were married!
- James 'Jim' Branch: That's reason often enough, isn't it?
- [both laugh]
- Sharon Norwood: [while driving] I'd like to see that ticket to Kansas City.
- James 'Jim' Branch: Huh?
- Sharon Norwood: The ticket to Kansas City, you know, the one you didn't show my mother.
- James 'Jim' Branch: So, you want to see my ticket to Kansas City, huh?
- Sharon Norwood: You catch on.
- James 'Jim' Branch: Ha ha! And just why do you want to my ticket to Kansas City?
- Sharon Norwood: Because I don't think you've got one.
- James 'Jim' Branch: So, you don't think I've got one. Well, suppose I showed it to you, then what would you think?
- Sharon Norwood: I'd think you had a ticket to Kansas City.
- James 'Jim' Branch: Heh Heh Heh. You know, I.. I know exactly what you're thinking and I can't blame you.
- Sharon Norwood: That's mighty noble of you Mr. Branch, but I'd like to see the ticket to Kansas City. Where is it?
- James 'Jim' Branch: Now, don't tell me that you think I'm lying again. You've got to believe me about this. You've got to!
- Sharon Norwood: Oh, yeah?
- [Pulls car over and stops]
- Sharon Norwood: You can't ride in this car without a ticket.
- James 'Jim' Branch: So, that's the way it is, is it? You won't take my word for it, will you?
- Sharon Norwood: Get out of this car.
- James 'Jim' Branch: You know a man has a certain pride about some things. I might not show you that ticket just out of stubbornness.
- Sharon Norwood: Will you get out?
- James 'Jim' Branch: You mean I've got to get out and walk home... like a girl?
- Sharon Norwood: Get out of this car!
- James 'Jim' Branch: You're going to look back on this some day with regret!
- Sharon Norwood: The only thing I regret is taking you this far, now, get out!
- James 'Jim' Branch: [Smiles after spotting nearby train station and gets out of the car] All right, if that's the way you feel about it, you can turn around and go right back where you came from.
- Sharon Norwood: Oh no, you go back where I came from. I'll go on and apologize to Tommy Bannister for you.
- [Drives off]
- James 'Jim' Branch: Hey!
- James 'Jim' Branch: Listen baby, I know a phonograph record when I hear one. By the way, you'd better tell you mate to dust off that record. it's a little worn out.
- Sharon Norwood: And so are some people!
