The following article contains spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" hits theaters this week, and if you've seen it, you know that the cast is astonishing. Lily Gladstone turns in a powerful performance as Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman whose family is part of the horrifying murders of tribespeople to gain their money and profit rights after oil is discovered on their land. The Osage Nation became wealthy, and white men used a number of underhanded and despicable ways to get their hands on the money. That includes the plotting of a series of murders by William King Hale (Robert De Niro) and his nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Based on the true story of the Osage murders in Oklahoma at the beginning of the 20th century, the cast includes Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers,...

Jack Nicholson’s daughter Tessa Gourin is speaking out about her estranged relationship with her famous father.
Since the 28-year-old actress was young, her mother, actress Jennine Gourin, told her “not to tell anyone that I have this famous dad,” Gourin recently told The Daily Beast.
“I knew he was powerful and Daddy Warbucks-level rich, so I kind of equated my life to being like Orphan Annie’s,” she told the publication, referring to the 1932 film “Little Orphan Annie”.
Gourin claimed that, as a child, Nicholson, who has never publicly acknowledged her as his daughter, “wasn’t interested” in having a relationship with her. While she refused to go into detail about her childhood, she did mention that her father, now 85, paid for her early education.

The history of Hollywood comic-book musicals is not a long and garlanded one. Comic books that have become stage musicals, well yes – there are quite a few of those. Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, Little Orphan Annie, Josie and the Pussycats – all were inspired by, or were synonymous with, the printed page before making it to the big screen. Alison Bechdel, she of the Bechdel test, saw her introspective and gruelling graphic memoir Fun Home transformed into a Tony award-winning Broadway musical in 2015.
But actual superhero musicals? There’s the ill-fated, rightly obscure 1983 Australian comedy The Return of Captain Invincible, starring Alan Arkin and (remarkably) Christopher Lee, but it is certainly not a populous pantheon. So it is something of a surprise to learn that...

Jessie Buckley is laughing. In fact, she’s laughing so hard during the onstage Q&a that follows the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Wild Rose that she practically lists to one side. The 29-year-old Irish actress is trying to seriously answer the questions that are being thrown at her, of course, but a gesture from a friend in the audience — or perhaps the sheer silliness of finding herself in the spotlight — has made her crack up. Sporting a mop of coppery curls and a magenta velvet suit, she comes...

Seth Meyers was thrilled President Donald Trump savaged Michelle Wolf’s performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner in a tweet that compared it to Meyer’s own Whcd host gig in 2011.
“Thank you for bringing it up,” the Late Night host told Trump, calling it “One of the best nights of my life.”
Meyers next took on Trump’s tweet in which he called Wolf, who used to work on Meyers’ show, “filthy” and “mean.”
“Just know, when you call her ‘filthy’ you are – so right! She is filthy!” Meyers said. “And she is mean, which is what we love about her! Because those are wonderful qualities for a comedian – and terrible qualities for free-world leaders.”
Meyers played a clip from his show in which Wolf had played Little Orphan Annie announcing she is getting a sex change.
“If you ask me, Sarah Huckabee Sanders got off easy!” Meyers insisted.

While World War II raged overseas, pop-culture creators on the American home front were in an awkward spot: How could their art help the war effort without becoming dry and preachy? How could they adapt light entertainment to document the anxieties and deprivations of life during wartime? Nowhere was this artistic crisis felt more than in the still-young (and insanely popular) mediums of cartooning and comic strips. Warren Bernard’s gorgeous new collection of rare drawings from the war years, Cartoons for Victory, dives into that strange period. The collection features single-panel editorial cartoons as well as comic strips and advertisements, boasting a high percentage of previously unseen material. There’s wartime work by cartoonists such as Charles Addams (The Addams Family), Harold Gray (Little Orphan Annie), Harvey Kurtzman (Mad magazine), Will Eisner (The Spirit, A Contract with God), as well as many less-known artists of the period. More than...

I’m a fossil. I know it. Proof positive: I read the daily newspaper. Not on a pad or tablet or my computer, I go out and actually buy the blamed thing. I read it during breakfast. Yes, I still get a certain percentage of my news from the computer and/or Jon Stewart and The Daily Show but I like having the physical newspaper, just as I prefer actual books to an e-reader. If I don’t get to read the paper, I get cranky. Or crankier.
I think I got that from my father, Joel W. Ostrander Sr. He was always the first up in the morning but, during my high school years, I was up second. We’d both be at breakfast and we would read the newspaper. I’d get the sections he was done with; that’s where I learned to be possessive about my newspaper.

From a poem to a play to a number of high-profile films, Annie has been a very popular orphan.
Columbia Pictures released a brand-new trailer for the upcoming musical comedy Annie, and in it we get a fun, lighthearted look at the world of orphans who are forced to be political pawns in order for a wealthy man to maintain his grasp on power and influence over the population. But, in a fun way, and also there's a lesson about love in there too.
However, this story goes back over 130 years through a long and complicated lineage of adaptation and interpretation in various forms of media. So let's take a look back at the history of Annie.

At this point, you might be forgiven for feeling a serious case of remake-fatigue. It seems every other film these days is a re-boot or a re-imagining of some beloved classic or other, with very little in the way of originality on display. With the release of its new trailer, however, it seems that it would be inadvisable to dismiss the upcoming new adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Annie, as one of those tedious revisits. This one actually looks kind of awesome.

It was not until 1977 that Annie made her first ever appearance on Broadway, however – with its now iconic musical format...

Lilla Crawford has been cast to play the title role in the new Broadway production of “Annie,” announced NBC’s Today show on Friday. The 5th-grader beat out 5,000 girls from all over the country and hundreds of online submissions. “I love the show, I love the music and I love the role of Annie,” Crawford told Today. “And I’m so excited to work with the dog!” The role of Sandy has not been cast. October will mark the launch “Annie’s Search for Sandy.” When asked why she thought she had been cast, the 11-year-old replied, “I think I relate to Annie because we’re both spunky.” Crawford also played Debbie in “Billy Elliot.”The production will be directed by three-time Tony Award-winner James Lapine and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blakenbuehler. Based on Harold Gray’s newspaper character “The Little Orphan Annie,” the musical features tunes by Charles Strouse,...

In this very space a few days ago, John Ostrander said, “By this time next year, we may know if we’re still viable or making buggy whips.” He was referring to comics creators, to comics fans, and to the entire comics art medium.
The first person I heard refer to comics with this term was master cartoonist Stan Lynde. In case you’re challenged in matters relating to newspaper comic strips, Stan was the creator and writer/artist of the strips Rick O’Shay and Latigo. He’s a master storyteller, a brilliant humorist and an artist of fantastic prowess. The time was close to 20 years ago, and Mike Grell and I were at a very enjoyable comic book convention at Billings Montana. One of the promoters promised to introduce me to Stan. This was a real fanboy moment for me.

Will Smith may be gearing up to produce a remake of Annie with his daughter, Willow Smith, in the lead, Variety is reporting. Details are few at this stage (and, indeed, unconfirmed all around), but the article suggests that Jay-z may be involved in either updating the songs of the Broadway musical or providing new material altogether. The rapper recently worked with Willow on her single, "Whip My Hair." Based on a daily comic strip that debuted in 1924, "Little Orphan Annie" told the story of a little girl who, after escaping from an orphanage, is taken in by a rich Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. The comic strip, originally created by Harold Gray, continued long after the author's death, ceasing publication only recently (The final strip ran in...

After 86 years in publication, Tribune Media Services announced the cancellation of the "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip. On June 13, Sunday papers will showcase the last strip featuring America's favorite redheaded orphan.
Harold Gray's "Little Orphan Annie" was once published in hundreds of newspapers, but is now seen in fewer than twenty. The strip will end on a cliffhanger, with Daddy Warbucks wondering what happened to Annie during her latest encounter with the Butcher of the Balkans.
Steve Tippie, Tms's vice president of licensing, said that while Ted Slampyak and Jay Maeder, the artist and writer of "Little Orphan Annie," produced terrific story strips, there weren't enough resources to keep the comic syndicated.
Annie has had a hard knock life, surviving the Great Depression, World War II, and countless adventures. Despite the comic strip's cancellation, this is not the last we'll see of Annie and her canine companion, Sandy. Tippie...

Help me, Punjab, help! My favorite-for-obvious-reasons comic strip Annie is ending after 85 years — the last installment will run Sunday, June 13. Originally created by Harold Gray as Little Orphan Annie, the strip inspired 1930s radio program Adventure Time with Orphan Annie, a 1977 Broadway musical, several movies, and my overall sense of self-importance.
According to the AP, “the strip’s last panel is a cliffhanger, showing Annie caught in a tangle with the Butcher from the Balkans. Daddy Warbucks is left to mourn her loss.” So he’s not sure she’s really gone…just like Annie was re: her birth parents!

Hollywood screenwriter Budd Schulberg, best known for his Oscar-winning screenplay for On The Waterfront, has died at his home on Long Island. He was 96.Born in 1914 in New York into a movie family - his father was Paramount production head B.P. Schulberg and his mother was sister of movie powerbroker Sam Jaffe - Schulberg wrote his first screenplay aged only 19. His entree into Hollywood came in 1937 with an uncredited contribution to David O. Selznick's A Star Is Born. He received his first credit on Little Orphan Annie a year later.During the war Schulberg served in the Oss, the fledgling espionage agency. Fittingly, his war years had a distinctly cinematic flavour: he was assigned to John Ford's documentary unit, helping record Us combat operations from D-Day to the liberation of the concentration camps and Nuremberg trials, and was involved in the arrest of German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl in Austria.
