- Near the little New England town of Graystone is a mansion known as Graystone Gables, the summer home of a wealthy young New Yorker, David Chandler. E.H. Lockwood, who has a pretty daughter named Betty, is caretaker of the place. The girl has a somewhat exacting mother, so she likes to go with her kindly father to see the wonderful grounds of the estate. The father dies and the mother marries Jim Weed, a widower with two grown-up sons. Because of their unkind treatment of her she spends more and more time at the Gables. One day she creeps in through a window and dresses in a wonderful gown that she finds. A subsequent visit is discovered by the owner, who has returned unexpectedly. He has no objection to her visits and gives her the freedom of the place. Then one of Wood's sons attempts to rob the place. When Betty appears with a sheet around her he thinks he has seen a ghost and tells the people of the village. A party is formed to solve the mystery and Betty and David are discovered together. After the scandal that follows Betty is driven from the village. She is dressed in her borrowed finery when David comes along and finds her weeping by the roadside. David takes her to New York and places her in the care of a society woman as chaperon. A girl named Mildred Lee is openly making love to him because of his great fortune. This disgusts Betty and she starts back home. David follows. Back in Graystone Betty finds that her mother is dying but her step-brothers refuse to let them meet. In despair Betty goes to the Gables, where David finds her. She has been followed to the mansion by one of her stepbrothers and is struggling to escape his unwelcome attention when David arrives. Betty is rescued. The picture ends with a wedding that makes the girl who was driven out of town by gossip the first lady in the community.—Moving Picture World synopsis
