The tall, handsome and muscular Scottish actor Sean Connery is best known as the original actor to portray James Bond in the hugely successful movie franchise, starring in seven films between 1962 and 1983. Some believed that such a career-defining role might leave him unable to escape it, but he proved the doubters wrong, becoming one of the most notable film actors of his generation, with a host of great movies to his name. This arguably culminated in his greatest acclaim in 1988, when Connery won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an Irish cop in The Untouchables (1987), stealing the thunder from the movie's principal star Kevin Costner. Connery was polled as "The Greatest Living Scot" and "Scotland's Greatest Living National Treasure". In 1989, he was proclaimed "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine, and in 1999, at age 69, he was proclaimed "Sexiest Man of the Century."
Thomas "Sean" Connery was born on August 25, 1930 in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. His mother, Euphemia Maclean, was a cleaning lady, and his father, Joseph Connery, was a factory worker and truck driver. He also had a, Neil Connery, a plasterer in Edinburgh, who was eight years younger. Before going into acting, Sean had many different jobs, such as a milkman, lorry driver, a laborer, artist's model for the Edinburgh College of Art, coffin polisher and bodybuilder. He also joined the Royal Navy, but was later discharged because of medical problems. At the age of 23, he had a choice between becoming a professional soccer player or an actor, and even though he showed much promise in the sport, he chose acting and said it was one of his more intelligent decisions.
No Road Back (1957) was Sean's first major movie role, and it was followed by several made-for-TV movies such as Anna Christie (1957), Macbeth (1961) and Anna Karenina (1961) as well as guest appearances on TV series, and also films such as Hell Drivers (1957), Another Time, Another Place (1958), Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959) and The Frightened City (1961). In 1962 he appeared in The Longest Day (1962) with a host of other stars.
His big breakthrough came in 1962 when he landed the role of secret agent James Bond in Dr. No (1962). He played James Bond in six more films: From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Never Say Never Again (1983).
After and during the success of the Bond films, he maintained a successful career as an actor and has appeared in films, including Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964), The Hill (1965), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Wind and the Lion (1975), Time Bandits (1981), Highlander (1986), The Name of the Rose (1986), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Rising Sun (1993), The Rock (1996), Finding Forrester (2000) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003).
Sean married actress Diane Cilento in 1962 and they had Sean's only child, Jason Connery, born on January 11, 1963. The couple announced their separation in February 1971 and filed for divorce 2½ years later. Sean then dated Jill St. John, Lana Wood, Magda Konopka and Carole Mallory. In 1975 he married Micheline Roquebrune and they stayed married, despite Sean's well-documented love affair with Lynsey de Paul in the late '80s. Sean had three stepchildren through his marriage to Micheline, who was one year his senior. He is also a grandfather. His son, Jason and Jason's ex-wife, actress Mia Sara had a son, Dashiell Connery, in 1997.
Sean Connery died at the age of 90 on October 31, 2020, in Nassau, the Bahamas, where he resided for many years.- Music Artist

Talented. Beautiful. Modest. These three words described R&B singer-turned-actress Aaliyah perfectly.
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Diane (Hankerson) and Michael Haughton. Her uncle was music manager Barry Hankerson and her brother is director Rashad Haughton. Aaliyah was raised in Detroit. She got her first major exposure appearing on the syndicated television series Star Search (1983), where she awed the audience with her amazing voice and talent, singing "My Funny Valentine", a song which her mother had sung years earlier. At age 11, she sang with Gladys Knight in a five-night stint in Las Vegas. Withdrawing from the celebrity scene for a few years, Aaliyah lived the life of a normal teenage girl, attending Detroit's Performing Arts High School, where she majored in dance. It was around this same time that Aaliyah met singer/composer R. Kelly. Kelly assisted Aaliyah with the production of her debut album "Age Ain't Nothing But A number", which scored several number hits, specifically "Back and Forth." The album's title was a brief reference to her short-lived marriage to R. Kelly (she was 15 years of age at the time, and he was in his 20s). Thir marriage was annulled due to her status as a minor.
During her senior year, Aaliyah went on to record "One In A Million", which featured the songwriting talents of major R&B producers/writers Missy Elliott and Timbaland. The album was a major success and sealed Aaliyah's fame forever.
Aaliyah recorded the single 'Journey to the past' for the Anastasia (1997) soundtrack. After seeing her at an awards show and in the video for her hit song "Are You that Somebody?" (from the Eddie Murphy film Doctor Dolittle (1998)), film producer Joel Silver (producer of The Matrix (1999) and other major actor films) asked Aaliyah to audition for a role in an romance/action film, Romeo Must Die (2000). With her determination and sex appeal, Aaliyah won Silver over and was cast in her first major film role. Romeo Must Die (2000) was a hit at the box office. This film led to her being cast as one of the stars of the film based on Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned (2002), and in the two sequels to the major box office hit, The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003).
During the busy schedule of her film career, Aaliyah took time to record her third album, the self-titled "Aaliyah". July 2001 was a busy time for Aaliyah. After the success of her song "Try Again", for which she was nominated for a Grammy Award and won several MTV Video Awards, Aaliyah finally released her "Aaliyah" album. Debuting at number two on the Billboard charts, "Aaliyah" was a sales success, despite some lackluster reviews.
In August 2001, Aaliyah took time off from her busy album promotional tour to fly to the Bahamas to film a video for the song "Rock the Boat". The video, filmed on Abaco Island, was directed by Hype Williams, a major music video director known for his style and wit.
On August 25, 2001, after filming the video, Aaliyah and about 9-11 of her entourage took off from Marsh Harbour airport at 6:50pm EDT in a small Cessna 404 en route to Opa-Locka, Florida. A few minutes after take-off, the plane crashed about 200 feet from the runaway, killing Aaliyah and many others instantly. Four passengers were pulled alive from the wreckage, and one later died at a hospital in Nassau. Aaliyah was only 22 years old. Her funeral was held on Friday August 31st in New York, and 22 white doves were flown to celebrate each year of her life. Soon after her death, the hit singles 'More Than a woman' and 'Rock The Boat' were released, from her third album. In 2002, the film Queen of the Damned (2002) was released, in which Aaliyah played Queen Akasha. She was nominated for best Villain at the MTV Movie Awards 2002.
Aaliyah's short-lived, but brilliant career, was a true success story for a young African-American woman who went against all odds to be herself in an industry where originality is scarce. Truly missed by her family, friends, and fans, her music and film contributions will live forever. It's no wonder that her name means 'Highest, most ex-halted one; the best' in Hebrew. She had achieved so much in her twenty-two years.- Actor

Bahamian-born Calvin Lockhart first caught moviegoers' attention in the supercharged urban films Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) and Halls of Anger (1970) before becoming a fairly steady fixture in the "blaxploitation" movies of the early-to-mid-1970s.
Born Bert Cooper to a large family in Nassau on October 18, 1934, he was raised there before moving to New York in his late teens with initial designs on becoming a civil engineer (Cooper Union School of Engineering). Dropping out after a year to pursue an acting career, Calvin worked as a carpenter and construction worker, among other odd jobs. He first studied with legendary coach Uta Hagen and then hit the New York theater boards. The story goes that he was discovered by playwright Ketti Frings while working as a taxi driver. She was so impressed with his arrogance that she cast him in her play "The Cool World" in 1960. From there Calvin drummed up interest via a bit of controversy on Broadway when he played a sailor in love with a white girl in the racially-themed "A Taste of Honey" starring Angela Lansbury.
Serious film and TV roles for black actors were scarce at that time, so Calvin moved to Europe. In Italy he owned a restaurant and formed his own theater company, serving as both actor and director. He also lived in Germany before settling in England. He starting building up film credits with minor work in such British movies as A Dandy in Aspic (1968) and Only When I Larf (1968). He made news in another racially-motivated project entitled Joanna (1968), which centered around a "mod", interracial romance with 'Genevieve Waite'.
Returning to the US with a stronger resume, he made a distinct early impression as a slick preacher bent on fraud in the hip cop flick Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) and as an English teacher in the inner-city potboiler Halls of Anger (1970). He also involved himself in such black action features as Melinda (1972), Honeybaby, Honeybaby (1974) and The Baron (1977). Similar in charismatic style and intelligence to Sidney Poitier, the famed actor-director was impressed enough to cast Calvin in his broad comedy vehicles Uptown Saturday Night (1974) and Let's Do It Again (1975). Calvin could also play fey upon request, camping it up briefly in Myra Breckinridge (1970). During this rich period he also became an artist-in-residence with the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford (the first black actor so honored) and appeared prestigiously in such productions as "Titus Andronicus" (1972).
Calvin's career grew lackluster, however, by the end of the decade, resorting to trivial guest parts in such TV shows as Good Times (1974) and Get Christie Love! (1974). He landed a recurring role on the nighttime soap Dynasty (1981) in the early '80s.
In 1974, Calvin married a woman also from the West Indies and had three children. After his career subsided, he decided to return to his homeland in the mid '90s and resettled in Nassau with his fourth wife, Jennifer Miles. There he involved himself with the Freeport Players Guild as a director. He also returned to films after a 15-year absence, completing Rain (2008), a movie shot in the Bahamas, shortly before he suffered a major stroke. Calvin died of complications on March 29, 2007, and his family is in the process of establishing a scholarship fund in his name for Bahamian student pursuing an acting or filmmaking career.- Tina Wiseman was born in Pearl Harbor Hospital in Hawaii. Her father was a sailor based in Hawaii (he was raised on a farm in Ohio). Her mother was born and raised in American Samoa. Tina moved to Hawaii to continue her education. She was a Samoan princess, being the granddaughter of the high chief who founded the village of Futinga in American Samoa. Tina first studied to be a healer like her Samoan grandmother, but soon discovered that she had a passion to sing and act. She was featured in dozens of commercials and print ads and numerous independent films. Most recently she starred alongside Jon Jacobs (Lucinda's Spell (1998)) and Charlotte Lewis (The Golden Child (1986)) in the Miami dance movie DJ Hound Dog (2003). She recorded three dance tracks "Storm Cloud", "Telekinetic" and "Island Girl" for the soundtrack of DJ Hound Dog (2003), all of which were played in the nightclubs of Miami and appear on the movie's soundtrack album. She was also the DJ in the VIP lounge at "Billboard Live in South Beach". Sadly, Tina passed away on February 20, 2005, in the Bahamas from a pulmonary edema.

For the next few years, he wrote teleplays for such legendary dramatic series as Playhouse 90 (1956), Kraft Theatre (1947), The United States Steel Hour (1953), "Goodyear-Philco Playhouse" (1955)_ and Studio One (1948). Soon after, Hailey became a novelist. "Flight Into Danger" was adapted as a novel, "Runway Zero-Eight" (1958). In 1959, "The Final Diagnosis" became his second bestseller and, in 1961, "In High Places" became his third.
It took Hailey four years to write his next novel: "Hotel" (1965), which remained on the national bestseller lists for a full year. "Airport" (1968) did even better. It was on the national lists for over a year, staying in the number one spot on The New York Times bestseller lists for an incredible 30 weeks. "Wheels" (1971), "The Moneychangers" (1975) and "Overload" (1979) also claimed the number one position on the national bestseller lists, further establishing Hailey as one of today's most popular novelists.
In 1979, Arthur Hailey announced his retirement. At this time, he discovered he was very ill and underwent a quadruple bypass heart operation. The surgery was a tremendous success, leaving Mr. Hailey feeling invigorated and bursting with creative energy. His wife, Sheila, suggested he put his energy to use and write another book. "Strong Medicine" was the wonderful result. - Jett Travolta was born on 13 April 1992 in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. He died on 2 January 2009 in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas.

- Chris Cline was a self-made billionaire entrepreneur, philanthropist and political donor once called the "King of Coal". A well-known philanthropist and Republican donor who began working in the coal industry in West Virginia in 1980 at the age of 22, he rapidly rose through the industry ranks, founding an energy development group, the Cline Group, in 1990. Governor Jim Justice (R-WV) told The Washington Post that when Cline was in his early 20s, he bought the deep-mining company Pioneer Fuel Corporation from Justice's father. In 2006, he founded Foresight Energy to develop and operate mines in Illinois.
The youngest of three sons, he started working in the mines at age 15. Cline attended Brenton Elementary School in Wyoming County, WV, where he lived after moving from Isaban (McDowell County, WV). The 1976 graduate of Baileysville High School attended Marshall University (Huntington, West Virginia) but dropped out.
His first business opportunity came early, when Chris was 22 and his dad, who by then shared ownership of a mine, fell ill. His father's partner was ready to buy the other half of the mine until Chris came home and purchased it with $50,000 he borrowed. The younger Cline reportedly sensed a shift on the horizon. Regulations were moving toward requiring plants to scrub the coal they burned. If they were going to scrub it, they had no need to be picky about how much sulfur was in it. The bet fueled a business that began in Appalachia then took him to Illinois and, later, Canada.
Cline, his daughter, their pilot, and four others were killed in a helicopter crash on July 4, 2019, shortly before his 61st birthday. His net worth was estimated at $1.8 billion. - Producer

Sometimes a man is the sum total of the work he leaves behind. This might best describe makeup artist Richard Snell, who passed away on February 21 on location for the second Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, currently filming in the Bahamas. Snell was one month shy of his 50th birthday.
Snell was an artist's artist, plying his trade in the early 1980s before getting his break in such films as Poltergeist II and House by mid-decade. He created both Klingon and Vulcan prosthetics for the fourth, fifth, and sixth Star Trek films under his own company name and often served as a contact lens technician on his projects.
By the 1990s, Snell, who worked ardently in his home studio on Cantara Street in Reseda, California, was an in-demand artist for a variety of horror, science fiction, and fantasy films, on which he served many projects as the makeup department head or key makeup artist.
Known as a master of prosthetic and special effects makeup, Snell acquired key assignments on landmark makeup films including How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Artificial Intelligence: AI. He often worked with his friend and fellow makeup stalwart Ve Neill, who is keying makeup on the current Pirates film, in addition to the first film. Pirates 2 and 3 are being filmed consecutively, with release dates in both 2006 and 2007.
Snell was a somewhat private man who liked to do his work and put it out there, without dissection or interference. Nevertheless, he took part in Hollywood's 60th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz celebration, for which he created a Flying Monkey and Wicked Witch, and was a part time spokesman for Premiere Products, for whom he sometimes held makeup demonstrations.
According to early reports, Snell's cause of death was unknown, but he died in his sleep in his hotel room near the Pirates set. He had just recently gotten married and is survived by his wife and twin daughters who are less than a year old. He will be deeply missed by both friends and colleagues. No service has yet been established.- Douglas Kratz and 8 others including debuting actress/songbird Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash in the Abaco Islands, Marsh Habour, Bahamas.
