Kenneth Branagh is back for this third — and by TheWrap’s account, best — appearance as Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot in “A Haunting in Venice.” He also directs the spooky mystery, which boasts a terrific lineup of murder suspects (and potential victims), including Michelle Yeoh, Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan and Kelly Reilly.
Here’s who plays which character in the film based on Christie’s 1969 novel “Hallowe’en Party” — and where you might have seen the less familiar names before.
“A Haunting in Venice” is now streaming on Disney+.
20th Century Studios.
Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot
British actor Kenneth Branagh reprises his role as the fussy Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, whom he previously played in the recent remakes “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile.” The film begins in 1947 with Poirot retired from sleuthing and leading a quiet life in Venice — until he’s dragged into a new case.

For nearly two decades, The CW wasn’t TV’s most popular network — outside of carefully curated demographics — but it might have been the network most confident in its brand. Shows on The CW looked and felt like they were shows that could exist only on The CW.
Currently, I struggle to find the proper analogy to describe the grab bag of acquisitions that fill The CW’s schedule since the network was acquired by the Nexstar Media Group.
Is the process of surfing through the CW slate, trying to guess a program’s origins, like taking a road trip with the family and playing the license plate game? “There’s New Mexico! There’s British Columbia! How did New Brunswick get all the way over here?”
Or is The CW’s strategy of picking up motley offerings that weren’t on the radar of Netflix or Hulu or Max...

The third film in Kenneth Branagh’s re-imagined Hercule Poirot series, A Haunting in Venice, earned $1.2M at Thursday Preview screenings. The spooktacular adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s Hallowe’en novel could perform similarly to other chapters of Branagh’s Poirot films, with a weekend gross of roughly $15M.
While the numbers barely move the needle compared to 2023’s other box office barn burners, it’s worth noting that A Haunting in Venice is Branagh’s best-reviewed Poirot film with a 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Poirot’s latest case might not pack the star power of 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express or 2022’s Death on the Nile. Still, it includes Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh and multi-talented funny gal Tina Fey. If A Haunting in Venice plays its tarot cards right, it could send The Nun II to the back of the pews after a 60%+ dip in attendance.

Massive spoilers for "A Haunting in Venice" follow.
The adventures of Hercule Poirot — "probably the greatest detective in the world," as he once so humbly referred to himself — have been well documented by this point. Beginning with Agatha Christie's literary accounts of the detective's cases, the character continued to thrive beyond his creator's passing in 1976, with other authors concocting new mysteries for Poirot to solve.
Of course, Christie's Poirot output, stretching as it did from 1920-1975, was ripe for adaptation to other mediums, and indeed Poirot has turned up numerous times in everything from stage plays to radio dramas to television shows to, of course, the movies. By the time director/star Kenneth Branagh made his way to bringing Poirot back to the big screen on both sides of the camera, most of the best Poirot stories had already been adapted in one form or another.

If there’s a prime example of a franchise getting better with every movie, Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie universe is a prime example. Starting in 2017 with the generic “Murder on the Orient Express,” it’s sequel, the 2022 feature “Death on the Nile” was rollicking fun if only for how horny it was in its themes and presentation. But, surprisingly, Branagh followed that up with a dark and somber haunted house story, “A Haunting in Venice” that, if anything, showcases both his impassioned love for Christie’s work and ability to tell a truly spooky film.
Acclaimed detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is in a bit of a slump. It’s 1947 and Poirot spends his days avoiding mysteries and eating cake. But things change when his old friend Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) comes calling, asking Poirot to witness a seance led by psychic medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh). Reynolds hopes to...

Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice is set over one night in 1947. World War II has mercifully ended, but peace on the streets of Venice is being interrupted by another kind of invasion: Halloween trick-or-treaters. As the mystery novelist Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) cheekily suggests to her friend, the famed, mustachioed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh), the Americans may have left, but their holiday traditions stayed behind.
Halloween wasn’t invented by the Americans. Nor was the tradition of playing dress-up, or telling scary stories in the dark. And that misleading narrative says something about Ariadne’s predilection for spinning a yarn as much as it does the film’s penchant for easy shortcuts and weak suppositions. At its best, A Haunting in Venice, the third of Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptations, seductively draws us in with evocative, highly textured period details, but at its worst, it’s frequently...

During a time of tumult in the industry, when adult-oriented thrillers and dramas are increasingly dicey theatrical propositions, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kenneth Branagh has managed to keep his series of movies based on Agatha Christie‘s Detective Hercule Poirot going. Roughly 19 months after “Death on the Nile” — a critical and theatrical disappointment released in February after many delays forced by the coronavirus pandemic and controversy around star Armie Hammer — Branagh and Poirot are back in September with “A Haunting in Venice.”
On Wednesday, 20th Century Studios released a new trailer for the thriller, which stars Branagh and a cast of some major stars.
Adapted from Christie’s 1969 novel “Hallowe’en Party,” the trailer has Poirot’s latest adventure veering more into the realm of horror, with Tina Fey playing mystery novelist Ariadne Oliver (clearly meant as an avatar for Christie herself).

Update:
Shortly after rumors about Kenneth Branagh adapting the classic animated series Gargoyles to the silver screen took flight, writer Greg Weisman is out here clipping wings, saying the story is false. Many credit Weisman as the creator of Gargoyles, lending more weight to his word than a group of stone-encased protectors of New York City.
“I’m thinking… that it’s flat-out not true,” Weisman tweeted hours after the rumor spread like wildfire on Monday.

Harare, June 22 (Ians) Scott Edwards played a captain’s knock of 67 not out and helped Netherlands start their campaign in Mens Odi World Cup qualifiers with a five-wicket victory over USA in their Group A match at Takashinga Sports Club, here on Thursday.
After restricting USA to 211/8, Netherlands chased down the target with five wickets in hand and 40 balls remaining. Supporting Edwards was Teja Nidamanuru with his fine 58, as the duo shared a 72-run stand for the fifth wicket, followed by the Netherlands skipper stitching an unbroken 59-run partnership with Logan van Beek to take the Dutch over the line.
Barring a short spell of play when USA bowlers got through three quick Netherlands middle-order wickets, they were never quite in the contest to challenge Edwards & Co. Ali Khan marked his return in style as he pulled off a good catch to dismiss Vikramjit Singh in the fourth over.

ReviewSaif Ali Khan is adequately leery and manic as Ravan in this Om Raut directorial, but there’s only so much he can do with such a shallow script.Prabhas as Ram in AdipurushIt is often said that the Ramayana is about how people ought to be, while the Mahabharata is about how people are. In the epic, Ram, the symbol of ideal behaviour and practice, is a young prince who renounces his right over his kingdom, and leaves for the jungle in the company of his equally young wife and brother. His trials and tribulations don’t end there – and each time he is tested, he must choose the path of righteousness. Beyond religious reasons, the story has such a hold across generations also because it has such fantastic drama.
