From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.
After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.
But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

The People's Joker. In The People’s Joker (2022), Vera Drew makes her feverish entrance into the cluttered morass of the DC Comics cinematic multiverse by bursting through a trapdoor. Having garnered recognition as an Emmy-nominated television editor for outré comedians such as Tim Heidecker, Eric André, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Tim Robinson, Drew serves as director, co-writer, editor, lead actress, and cosmic prankster for her cinematic debut. The anarchic DIY spectacle, recently released theatrically after two years in intellectual-property limbo, mines the contradictory supervillain mythologies of the Joker to narrate Drew’s journey of self-discovery as a trans woman in the fractious world of alternative comedy. After Warner Bros. sent a cryptic letter of disapproval regarding the film’s flagrant recontextualization of the Batman franchise a day before its debut at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, it was pulled from the program. Drew and her battalion of masked vigilantes have commandeered...

George Baron in The Blue Rose Photo: courtesy of Frightfest
One of the more unusual films about this year’s Frightfest is that it features two films made by teenagers. Alice Maio Mackay was unfortunately not available to talk about her spiky satire T Blockers, but we will doubtless be seeing more of her work in years to come. George Baron, however, was happy to meet up for a chat about his surrealist detective tale The Blue Rose. He wrote, directed and stars in it, but it’s no amateur effort, being handsomely produced and more than capable of standing alongside the big hitters at the festival.
As the name might suggest, the film is inspired by the work of David Lynch, though there’s a lot more going on than that and Baron is no mere imitator, acquitting himself well. He plays a young detective who, along with colleague...

Alice Maio Mackay is 18-years-old and this is her third feature film, screening in the 2023 line-ups of both Outfest and Fantasia. She’s also made a TV series and multiple shorts. There’s a prodigious talent there, but perhaps more importantly, there’s visible improvement in each thing she does. T-Blockers may at first look amateurish, but it’s a deceptively smart, layered piece of work which packs a lot of story and observation into just 74 minutes.

Moral panics about LGBTQ+ people happen in waves. When hostility is whipped up within a population, life at the sharp end gets really difficult. A few years later, things start to improve, and casual aggressors offer friendship, saying that they have now learned the error of their ways. Give it another decade or two and the whole thing starts again. This has a lot in common with the cycles of violence which we see in certain types of horror film. Stephen King endeavoured to provide an explanation in It, but the pattern is a common one, also showing up in the likes of the Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and [39930]Slumber Party Massacre/film] franchises. In Bad Girl Boogey, teenage writer/director Alice Maio Mackay brings these two elements together as her protagonist faces a bigoted assailant who may have a connection to a past incidence of mass murder, and...

Is it possible to be filled with so much hatred and bigotry that you project it onto an inanimate object? That’s just one of the many timely themes explored in 18-year-old Alice Maio Mackay’s thrilling new slasher Bad Girl Boogey, which follows a terrifying, mysterious masked killer who horrifyingly targets transgender and queer victims in a small town.
Australian filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay has two new feature films coming out this year—T Blockers and Bad Girl Boogey. Mackay’s first feature film, So Vam, is a coming of age, queer vampire story that also calls out bigotry and once again proves you don’t need a big budget to make a good movie. It’s especially impressive when you find out Mackay was only 16 years old when she made it. Written by Mackay and Benjamin Pahl Robinson and directed by Mackay, Bad Girl Boogey follows a group...

Showcasing different time periods connected by a creepy mask which brings out the worst in people, co-writer/director Alice Maio Mackay uses her sophomore feature to show the venomous bigotry resonating across the changing years. Sixteen years after the last killings, close friends Angel (Lisa Fanto) and Dario (Iris Mcerlean) are thrown into a nightmare situation when their friend is the next victim. It is up to the pair to overcome their personal struggles and fight their fear before the masked killer slaughters everyone dear to them.
What’s key to Bad Girl Boogey are the firm friendships within the group, looking out for each other regarding addiction issues, self-harming, and age-inappropriate relationships. This is particularly true for Angel,...

Dark Star Pictures will release Alice Maio Mackay’s acclaimed slasher film Bad Girl Boogey this summer and we have a look at the brand new trailer! Release plans include a digital platforms release on July 4th, a DVD release on July 11th, and select theaters will also screen the film starting on July 7th.
"Bad Girl Boogey follows Angel whose mother was brutally murdered one Halloween night, when blood was shed by a deranged killer wearing a parasitic mask cursed with black magic and bigotry. Sixteen years later, when Angel’s best friend is slaughtered by a killer with the same mask, they must overcome their personal struggles, fight their fear, and find the masked killer before he, or it, slaughters everyone they hold dear."

A couple months ago, we learned that Dark Star Pictures has picked up the North American distribution rights to the Australian slasher movie Bad Girl Boogey – and at the time, we heard the film would be receiving a VOD, digital, and physical media release on July 4th. But the release strategy is actually a bit more spaced out than that. Dark Star will be giving Bad Girl Boogey a digital release on July 4th, then the film will reach select theatres on July 7th, and the DVD release is scheduled for July 11th. With those dates less than a month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

"It's like a parasite... you put the mask on and it 'joins' you." Dark Star Pictures has revealed the official trailer for an indie horror film from Australia called Bad Girl Boogey, made by the trans filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay. After premiering at a few genre festivals last year, it'll be out on VOD to watch in July this summer. A slasher horror made on a tiny budget. Years ago, Halloween blood was shed by the wearer of a parasitic mask cursed with black magic and bigotry. Angel's friend is killed by person wearing same mask almost two decades later. They must overcome their struggles, fight fear, and find the killer before he takes out everyone. "An inclusive slasher film proudly representing the queer community and loudly announcing an exciting new directorial voice." The cast includes Lisa Fanto, Iris Mcerlean, Chris Asimos, Toshiro Glenn, Lewi Dawson, Kate Bonney + a voiceover...

While previous incarnations of Salem Horror Fest occured in tourist-heavy October, this year’s sixth installment smoothly shifted to two weekends in April. The official selections include 20 features and 37 shorts, along with repertory programming, celebrity guests, live podcasts, panels, after parties, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
Bury the Bride
After making his feature directorial debut with last year’s horror anthology Allegoria, Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One returns with Bury the Bride, exhibiting considerable growth as a filmmaker in a short span of time. He channels a redneck-fueled grit similar to his elder brother Rob Zombie’s ourve, particularly The Devil’s Rejects, coupled with Quentin Tarantino-esque idiosyncrasies.
The film follows bride-to-be June along with her older sister (co-writer Krsy Fox) and three of her closest friends into the California desert for a bachelorette party at a rural house owned by her mysterious fiance,...

Despite what the Academy Awards and Sight and Sound polls would have us believe, horror is and has always been the lifeblood of cinema. During the pandemic, when theaters across the country were closed, it was an indie horror movie that had fans showing up to drive-ins and keeping the box office alive. When productions across the globe had closed up shop and gone home to await further instructions, it was a horror filmmaker who found a way to make a movie entirely over Zoom and gave movie lovers something to talk about. Horror is one of the only genres to never wane in popularity or profitability throughout the history of cinema, spawning an entire subculture of conventions, events, and avenues for merchandising that thrive year-round.
From the earliest days of the streaming wars, horror has been on the frontlines in the form of the AMC-owned streaming service, Shudder.
