"Madame Web," released on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, frustrated audiences everywhere with its bizarre scripting, its lack of action, its weirdly unmotivated villain, and its staunch refusal to depict its lead characters actually turning into the superheroines they were destined to become. The title character was Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) a New York paramedic in 2003 who discovers she has clairvoyant powers. She traces the origin of her powers back to her birth in the Amazon rainforests, where a rare, mystical spider bit her pregnant mother. Her powers also bring her inexplicably into the company of three New York teenagers who will all become Spider-Women someday -- but not in this film.
Chasing the quartet is Spider-Man (Tahar Rahim), or rather an evil precursor to Spider-Man who has the same super-strength, the same costume, the same wall-crawling powers, and who shares Madame Web's talent for clairvoyance. He has seen a...

Is it time to #RestoreTheMadameWebVerse?
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, we doubt it, but Madame Web is proving to be a hit on Netflix. After debuting on the streaming service earlier this week, Sony's Marvel Comics adaptation has hit #1 on the streamer's "Top 10 Movies" list.
Were people just curious to see how bad it really is or did fans who watched Madame Web in theaters simply want to relive those many meme-worthy moments? We don't know. Either way, it's led to the movie being a hit on Netflix!
"It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee," Dakota Johnson...

Madame Web always had a steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie's mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it was clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was... probably not going to be a big hit.
To be fair, Madame Web did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory.
We didn't review Madame Web here on Cbm when it was released in theaters, but if you're interested,...

Netflix is an amazing place because its library boasts not only its originals, but also licensed movies and shows that people either didn't have the motivation or the opportunity to watch before. Not all of these movies and TV shows become smash hits, or even get rediscovered — a bad project usually stays bad, except for the extra views. Still, a Netflix subscription is a great way to watch something you didn't want to spend a movie ticket on.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe films are particularly notable in this regard. Following Netflix's exclusive deal with Sony in 2021, a number of films, including Ssu, have found their way to the streaming service sometime after their theatrical release.
Now, the critically and commercially disappointing Madame Web is coming to Netflix's library, and it's happening much sooner than originally expected. Let's take a look at which regions and when the movie will be available for streaming on Netflix.

Welcome back, physical media fans. It's time for another Blu-ray round-up, and this particular edition features a study in contrasts. On one hand, we have what many will consider to be one of the best movies of the year: "Dune: Part Two" (you can read our review right here). On the other, we also have what is arguably one of the worst movies of the year: Sony's woefully inept "Madame Web" (check out our review here). But that's not all! We also have new 4K releases of several great "older" titles. Throw in the latest from one of the Coen Brothers and a Jason Statham action pic as well, and you've got yourself a jam-packed Blu-ray round-up. So keep spinning those discs and read on.

Madame Web arrived in theaters earlier this year and is seemingly destined to go down as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, it earned only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, making it a critical and commercial flop Sony won't easily recover from. Of course, it's too late now to change its 2024 slate as Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter are fast approaching.
Box office numbers like the ones above confirm the vast majority of fans and regular moviegoers didn't bother seeing Madame Web on the big screen, but you'll soon be able to watch it at home... provided you have a Netflix subscription.

If you never caught Madame Web in theaters (I certainly wouldn’t blame you) but still want to check out the box office and critical disaster, you might be interested to know that the film will be coming to Netflix on May 14th.
Madame Web was a bit of a disaster, which is a shame for any project that people worked hard on, but you’ve got to wonder what type of movie the creative team had originally envisioned. While there was potential there, the final result wasted every opportunity. You had Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor as three different Spider-Women… except we never really get to see this in action beyond a few glimpses into the future. Toss in some bewildering dialogue and subpar action, and you’re just left scratching your head.
Madame Web star Dakota Johnson later slammed the movie, saying she would never do anything like it again.

British-American filmmaker Gil Kenan, who has directed ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, has said that the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise changed his life as a kid with its unique blend of horror and comedy.
‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ sees the return of the Spengler family to the New York City firehouse where it all began. They join forces with the original Ghostbusters, who have established a top-secret research lab to take ghost-busting to new heights. Things go awry when their discovery of an ancient artefact unexpectedly unleashes an evil force, putting the world at risk of a second Ice Age.
Talking about the impact of the film on him as a child, Kenan said: “‘Ghostbusters’ changed my life as a kid – the unique blend of scares and comedy. I had never experienced anything like it in a movie theatre before. What really got me was the fun of it all, the joy on screen. It was that feeling,...

This time round, it’s directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Jason Reitman. Effectively energised by the New York setting, the sequel has evidently learned from the disastrous mistakes of the previous film and emerges as an entertaining adventure in its own right, though it’s not entirely without problems.

Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had no trouble winning a relatively quiet weekend at the box office: Stronger-than-expected Saturday turnout rescued the movie from opening behind the franchise’s last installment.
Sunday estimates show Frozen Empire launching with $45.2 million in North America thanks to multi-generational turnout and families. In 2021, the pandemic-challenged Ghostbusters: Afterlife debuted to $44 million. The new movie will need to have decent legs, considering it cost more to make — $100 million, versus $75 million for Afterlife. And there’s still concern that the film hasn’t broadened out to any notable degree in terms of new fans.
Overseas, the Sony tentpole started off with $16.4 million from 25 markets — it has a staggered rollout for competitive reasons — for a global start of $61.6 million. In like-for-like markets, Sony says it is pacing 15 percent ahead of Afterlife. The U.K. leads with $5.3 million, followed quickly by Mexico with $5.2 million.

Paul Rudd has become a seminal part of the MCU as Ant-Man. His debut in the charming 2015 solo film intrigued audiences and brought a new type of superhero for audiences. Let the ghost hunting begin.
Sony’s spring event pic Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has started off its North American box office run with $4.7 million in Thursday previews before rolling out everywhere on Friday.
That compares to $4.5 million in previews for the last film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which succeeded in restoring the luster to the classic franchise created by the late Ivan Reitman. His son, Jason Reitman, directed Afterlife, but this time turned over helming duties to series co-scribe Gil Kenan.
Sony expects Frozen Empire to top the weekend’s box office chart with an opening in the $43 million to $44 million range, while tracking services are suggesting $45 million or more. (Afterlife, which debuted amid the challenges posed by the pandemic era, debuted to $44 million domestically). Critics didn’t exactly embrace either film, with Frozen Empire presently sporting a not-so-fresh score of 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Positive audience reaction, however, may boost the movie’s box office potential.

Suit up! Even though spring has finally sprung it doesn’t mean that all the spooks and specters are hiding out or in hibernation until the Fall and their holiday Halloween. And you know who you’re “gonna’ call”. Yes, it’s the return of a much-beloved film franchise, opting for an “earlier than Summer” release. Well, they are celebrating a rather big anniversary. Mind you, it’s just a few months short of three years since the last installment/revival/spin-off. No, I’m talking about the original, still-revered comedy/horror hybrid classic which will soon be forty years “young”. So, let’s fire up Ecto-1 and see what the new teams and the OGs are up to in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

The release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is upon us, and although the late Ivan Reitman sadly won’t get to see the movie, he did give his blessing before he died in 2022.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan told THR that Jason Reitman and himself did get to pitch the story for the sequel to Ivan Reitman. “We pitched an almost complete version of this film’s story outline to Ivan before his passing, and that was really meaningful,” Kenan said. “Obviously, we didn’t know that he wouldn’t be with us for the film, but his validation of the pitch and his joy at hearing it was something that kept us going through the writing.“
Kenan added, “I’m obviously very grateful to Jason for entrusting me with his family’s franchise. But I’m also really grateful that I was able to have a front row seat...

Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O’Connor, Paul Rudd, Kamail Nanjiani, Logan Kim, and Carrie Coon in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’
To succeed, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire needed to be fun and capture the spirit of the original Ghostbusters. It was and it did – with caveats. Seeing the Og Ghostbusters team strapping on their proton packs was a hoot, but this latest installment in the franchise made some odd plot choices. It also sticks around half an hour too long.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, a direct sequel to Afterlife, finds the Spengler family – teens Phoebe and Trevor, plus mom Callie – and former teacher-turned-ghostbuster Gary Grooberson moving into the iconic NYC headquarters. The foursome’s kept hopping, responding to kooky undead creatures, including a sewer dragon. If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, they’re on the case. Why? As Gary says, quoting the “Ghostbusters” lyrics, because bustin’ makes him feel good. (That’s just one...

Forty years ago, four men put on uniforms, came up with a catchy logo — a startled specter in a red circle with a slash going through it, no big whoop — strapped on some proton packs and saved New York City from an evil deity holed up in a penthouse. They were brave, they were bold, they were smartasses and, we can’t stress this part enough, they weren’t ‘fraid of no ghosts. It’s not a Stay Puft Marshmellow Man-sized leap to say that Ivan Reitman’s original Ghostbusters changed Hollywood blockbusters.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit theaters in just a few days, and box office projections are looking bright, with the sequel set for a $45 million opening.
This number puts Frozen Empire roughly on par with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which earned a $44 million opening upon its release in 2021. Afterlife went on to gross $204 million worldwide, but I can only assume that Sony hopes Frozen Empire goes a little further, particularly as they have plans for more installments of the franchise. Frozen Empire will also push the Ghostbusters franchise past the $1 billion mark at the box office within a week of release, with the previous four movies generating $945.2 million.

Sony’s spring event pic Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is opening everywhere Friday in North America following select Thursday previews. It also begins its international rollout this week. The studio is betting on an opening in the $43 million to $44 million range, while tracking services are suggesting $45 million or more.

Set two years later after the events in last film, Frozen Empire includes returning castmembers Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton, who starred in the original 1980s films. The caretakers of the Ghostbusters series are no strangers to being yelled at about all the things that fans don’t want to see in the movies. No, we can’t let women be Ghostbusters. No, this is no place to be earnestly sentimental about dead fathers and original cast members. No, don’t soften things down for younger generations that love the series.
With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire feels so wracked with anxiety, seemingly afraid to do anything too extreme with the toys at its disposal. That’s especially unfortunate given that all the right elements are in play. Freed from Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s legacy-sequel trappings, Frozen Empire initially gets down to the welcome business of positing what a fully functioning ghostbusting business in 2024 might look like.

Plot: After having relocated to NYC to fight ghosts, the Spengler find themselves tangling with an old nemesis of the Ghostbusters, Mayor Walter Peck (William Atherton), who wants to shut them down for good. Meanwhile, an ancient evil will be unleashed over the city, releasing all the spirits caught over the last forty years.
Review: I was a big fan of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman’s film skillfully blended nostalgia with a new take on the franchise that opened up the Ghostbusters universe in an inclusive way. It welcomed new fans without alienating old ones, something the 2016 reboot notoriously failed at. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire seems to be aimed at building the franchise out more extensively. While it’s still a fun, nostalgia-driven return to the Ghostbusting universe, it’s not as good as the last film and spreads itself too thin to do the new characters justice.

It’s been almost forty years since Ghostbusters introduced the plucky foursome fumbling their way through spectral encounters, using a now iconic Manhattan firehouse as their operations base. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set two years after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, further entrenches the Spengler family and newcomers into the franchise by returning to where it all began: New York City. Frozen Empire offers familiar set pieces, references, and easter eggs aplenty, but the nostalgia tank is now running on empty.
Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), mom Callie (Carrie Coon), and stepdad Gary (Paul Rudd) have adjusted well to life as Ghostbusters in the rundown yet classic firehouse. So well, in fact, that their latest paranormal capture caused enough city damage to put them in the crosshairs of Walter “Dickless” Peck (William Atherton). That’s not the only source of trouble for the new team; the firehouse’s containment unit is at capacity and struggling.

With "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," director Jason Reitman sparked a new direction for the sci-fi comedy franchise pioneered by his father, filmmaker Ivan Reitman. Much like the younger Reitman taking the reins of his father's cinematic history, the film grappled with the legacy of the movies that came before by delivering an Amblin-esque family adventure soaked in the nostalgia of the original "Ghostbusters." The result landed somewhere in the middle of being wonderfully entertaining and borderline self-indulgent, and that's coming from someone who has nothing but respect for the groundbreaking 1984 hit that came before it.
Two years later, the spook-nabbing franchise is continuing with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," this time directed by "Monster House" filmmaker Gil Kenan. Leaving behind the dusty, rural Oklahoma setting of "Afterlife," the sequel brings the action back to New York City, where the unconventional Spengler family have been handed the baton, or rather neutron wand, of the original Ghostbusters.

Phoebe Spengler knows who she is and what she wants and she doesn’t care what any of the dumb grown-ups think. Despite banishment from all Ghostbusting activities by her mother Callie, and also by the mayor of New York City, Phoebe decides to deal with a spirit sighting in a diner. She grabs her proton pack and marches her 15-year-old self to the scene of the haunting, brimming with teenage angst.
To anyone old enough to have watched the first Ghostbusters when it became a phenomenon in 1984, Phoebe might seem like an entitled brat, a spoiled Gen Z kid who approaches the supernatural not with wonder or wry humor, but with a temper tantrum. But for those who watch Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire not as an exercise in nostalgia, but as a proper film with its own character arcs and story beats, then Phoebe’s act of defiance offers the...

Quite alarmingly, the fifth entry in the Ghostbusters series — following straight on from the unexpectedly charming Afterlife — starts by quoting all 51 words of Robert Frost’s 1923 poem Fire and Ice, which posits two very different apocalyptic scenarios for the end of the world. Has the franchise suddenly fallen prey to the glum Christopher Nolanization of what we used to think of as bubblegum entertainment? Is Paul Feig’s controversial 2016 all-female iteration about to be frozen out of the canon? Will it be worthy and … boring?
Well, if you liked Afterlife, and not everybody did, the answer is no. It is confusing at times, and not everything works, but Frozen Empire does a very good job of keeping the flame alive, 40 years after the fact. As opposed to The Dial of Destiny, which leaned way too hard into the modern-day appeal of an action hero who’s now 80, the new-era Ghostbusters...

The Ghostbusters universe seems to be getting awfully crowded. The latest film in the franchise, celebrating its 40th anniversary (gulp), features a plethora of ghostbusters old and new, including the surviving members of the original cast, the characters introduced in 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and a variety of eccentric new figures who are bound to figure in future installments. The only ones left out, it would seem, are the female ghostbusters from 2016’s unfairly maligned reboot, who should at least have merited a respectful cameo.
Nonetheless, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire tries hard, very hard, to satisfy the series’ fans with plenty of nostalgic throwbacks and mainly succeeds. It’s not nearly as good as the classic 1984 original, but then again, neither was 1989’s Ghostbusters II, and that one was directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, all of whom were responsible for the original. So the fact...

If it weren’t for Ratatouille, Patton Oswalt and the late Anthony Bourdain may not have been friends.
Oswalt stopped by Watch What Happens Live recently to promote his upcoming role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and was asked how he and the American chef and author originally connected.
“I became friends with him because he was a huge fan of Ratatouille,” Oswalt said, “He was like, ‘They got kitchens and chefs right. It’s very, very accurate.'”
The actor voices the Pixar animated film’s main character, Remy, a Parisian rat with a passion and talent for cooking, who joins forces with a garbage boy at a fine-dining restaurant, and together, they become a dynamic chef duo.
Oswalt also recalled reaching out to Bourdain for recommendations when he and his wife were going to honeymoon in Paris, and the chef’s response was sweet but only worked for him.

Back in 2021, when the theatrical landscape felt far less certain as theaters were still in recovery mode due to the pandemic, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" arrived to reasonably positive reviews while being embraced by fans in a way the 2016 female-led reboot (all due respect) was not. As a result, we're getting a sequel in the form of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," which is due to hit theaters next weekend. The question is, can this bigger sequel do better numbers at the box office? Sony needs the answer to be yes.
Director Gil Kenan's "Frozen Empire" is currently expected to pull in between $35 and $47 million on its opening weekend, per Box Office Pro. That would put it in a similar range as its predecessor; "Afterlife" debuted to $44 million back in November 2021. That movie finished its run with $204 million worldwide, including $129 million domestically. At face value, that seems like a good start for the...

Sweeney played Julia Carpenter in the superhero movie alongside Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Johnson, who played the lead role of Cassandra Webb. It is part of the expansive Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen.
