It is always a joy to find shows you began to watch with zero expectations, and they always end up being good watches, surprisingly. A show that can keep you watching even if you have no clue how it will move forward is proof of good filmmaking. It’s been a while since a decent comedy drama came out on Netflix, and Bros is one of them. This Netflix Israeli original is set in Jerusalem and shares the story of two friends who run a bar. Created by Guy Amir and Hanan Savyon, the show was released on the streaming platform on April 19, 2024.
Bros is all about Pini and Nisso, who have been friends since childhood and currently run a bar in the city of Jerusalem. They have been marred with several issues on the personal and professional front. Pini is married to Alma, and they have been trying to...

It seems that not a single Gunn’s announcement related to the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot can go without controversy. A while back, when Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl, the director was criticized for having an all-white main cast of the movie.
Now the most recent outrage is directed toward the cast being “D-List” in nature. Everything started with the announcement that Pruitt Taylor Vince will be cast as Jonathan Kent in the upcoming reboot with Neva Howell cast as Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive human mother.
Even though both actors are established in their own right with medium-sized roles, none of them in the past has led blockbusters. Vince will star as a series regular in the upcoming Apple TV+ series ‘Lady in the Lake,’ alongside Natalie Portman, set to release this summer. His extensive television work includes appearances in popular series such as Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things,’ Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,...

It appears that every announcement about James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot sparks controversy. Some time ago, when Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl, the director faced criticism for assembling an all-white main cast (despite Supergirl not being a part of main cast…)
Now, the latest uproar revolves around the perceived “D-List” nature of the cast. It all began with the announcement of Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent and Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive human parents, in the upcoming reboot.

Immigration has often been a topic that sparks strong emotions around the globe, and it is an especially hot topic this election season, particularly when you have a U.S. presidential candidate characterizing undocumented immigrants not as “human” but rather as “animals” and using phrases such as “they are poisoning the blood of our country” at campaign rallies. Now seems to be a perfect time for a powerful new film, The Absence of Eden, to perhaps help lower the temperature and show the human side of those trying to cross the border into a new and hopefully better life.

Writer/Director Tilman Singer continues his streak of experimental high-concept horror with his sophomore effort, Cuckoo. The filmmaker boldly marches to the beat of his own drum, examining heady themes of grief, reproduction, and gendered expectations through inventive, playful horror. That Cuckoo plays it fast and loose with details and plotting means that this body horror entry will likely polarize, but lovers of weird cinema will find a lot of charm in Singer’s latest.
After a peculiar cold open that won’t make sense until much later in the film, Cuckoo introduces seventeen-year-old Gretchen (Hunter Schafer). The moody teen wears her disdain plainly as she’s dragged by her father, Luis (Marton Csókás), stepmother Beth (Jessica Henwick), and her mute 7-year-old stepsister Alma (Mila Lieu) to the Bavarian Alps resort where Alma was conceived. Gretchen’s deep in the throes of grief over the loss of her mother, whose...

The first shot after the opening titles of Tilman Singer’s savvily conceived but undercooked Cuckoo is like a reverse angle of the opening shot of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Here, a family drives through beautiful but implicitly foreboding mountainous terrain. And we’re located in the cab of the car with Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), an angsty teen who’s been forced to relocate from her home in the U.S. to a relatively remote corner of the Bavarian Alps.
Steep, imposingly snow-capped, and dotted with romantic castles and high-end ski lodges, the Bavarian Alps are tourist magnets, and justifiably so. But this part of Germany was also a favorite of Hitler’s, and today it’s the heart of traditional conservativism in the country. Like Appalachia in the U.S., it’s a place a horror movie might take us to in search of scary people—except here...

Nearly two years have gone by since we heard that production had wrapped on Cuckoo, a new horror film from writer/director Tilman Singer that stars Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo), and Jan Bluthardt (Tatort) – but we’re finally going to have the chance to see it very soon, as Neon will be giving Cuckoo a theatrical release on May 3rd. The film has been shrouded in secrecy this whole time, but during a new interview with Variety Schafer has revealed some new details… like the fact that Cuckoo sees her getting covered in blood and facing off with a bird-like monster!
First, here’s a refresher on the official synopsis: Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family.

Ornithologists will no doubt roll their eyes and scoff, “Who doesn’t know that?” But it was news to me that cuckoos, aside from inspiring those infernal kitsch clocks you want to smash once an hour, are also what’s known as brood parasites. That means they’re either too busy or too lazy or too evil to raise their own young, so they drop their eggs in the nests of other birds and let them do the parenting instead. Respect. German writer-director Tilman Singer folds that fascinating nugget of bird arcana into a reproductive horror scenario that’s more strange than coherent in his second feature, naturally titled Cuckoo.
There’s more than the seed of an entertainingly trippy freakout here, applying the peculiar breeding habits of the cuckoo to the demented plan of a self-described preservationist, bent on somehow or other building an assembly line of enhanced propagation using young “nestlings.

Everyone knows that hotels — preferably isolated, ideally with very few guests — make the best settings for horror films. All that sad anonymity, all that provisional space ready to be filled with something really nasty. In Cuckoo, Alpenplatz, run by the excessively friendly Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) totally fits the bill.
You never get a clear idea of its geography, apart from an enormous foyer fronted by a sort of supermarket where the odd, disoriented guest wanders in to vomit into the freezer unit. “Oh yes, that happens sometimes,” says the flirty receptionist Trixie (Greta Fernandez), who apparently has just stepped out of one of Brigitte Bardot’s lesser movies. There also are some bungalows — how close to the main building is not clear either — including one painted pink that Konig calls “the love nest.” In horror, that has to be a bad sign.
So a hotel is a good start.

What is “Cuckoo” about? What actually happens in it? How important is it for a movie to make sense? We can’t answer any of these questions. And nor can “Cuckoo,” an undoubtedly well-made and almost-interesting psychological thriller about a strange Alpine resort where — and we can’t stress this enough — it’s not clear what actually happens.
Some basic bits are, however, clear: Hunter Schafer is definitely in it, as Gretchen, a 17-year-old girl and general tortured soul forced to move in with her dad Luis (Marton Csokas), step-mom Beth (Jessica Henwick), and young step-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) after the death of her mother. Gretchen insists on having nothing to do with Alma, an arbitrarily cruel stance seemingly for the sake of a redemption arc later in the film.

The marketing thus far behind upcoming horror movie Cuckoo, from Neon and director Tilman Singer (Luz), has been refreshingly enigmatic so far, giving only the barest hints of its plot. Letter to a Pig | France/Israel | 17 minutes
As Haim (Alexander Peleg) tells his tale of surviving the Holocaust as a boy hiding in a pigsty from Nazis, he mentions how one of the animals looked him in the eye as though it knew his plight. The pig oinked and moved to stand between Haim and his pursuer, altering the latter’s perception and ultimately helping to turn him away. Beyond just the idea this creature saved his life, though, Haim also acknowledges the conditioned feelings within his heart for his unlikely savior. He had been taught pigs were unclean. Vicious. Lesser beings fit for slaughter. He was taught they deserved his hate.
It’s a profound realization about mankind’s propensity for bloodlust and superiority.

Jumper, Justin Anderson’s first short, opened on a naked man bathing in a pool. Conceived in 2014 for the tenth anniversary of British fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, the film was a riff on Pasolini’s Teorema; it followed a lunar stranger who shows up uninvited at a luscious Spanish villa and upends the frigid lives of its tenants. Ten years later, the same idea and shot survive more or less intact in Anderson’s feature debut, Swimming Home, based on a 2011 Man Booker-shortlisted novel by Deborah Levy. Except this time the setting is a summer home on an unidentified Greek island, the nude intruder a young woman, and her target is not a whole family but its taciturn, haunted patriarch.

A gala presentation at the 2023 UK Jewish Film Festival, sees a widowed Jewish man travel to Paris to support an old friend who has suffered a heart attack. Staying with his daughter, her partner and baby, he realises that she’s deeply unhappy. At first he thinks her partner must be to blame, but the truth is more complicated and will test the depth of his love for her as well as giving him insights into his own life back in Israel.
Love is entangled with powerlessness and drama with comedy in this slight but beautifully played tale. Alma (Sivan Levy) has grown up a lot since she last saw her father, Shimon (Sasson Gabay), and although the bond between them never feels fragile, they need to renegotiate their relationship as they begin to understand each other in new ways. Her knowingly obnoxious, self-destructive behaviour seems to stem in part.

Could this be Latin music’s next It couple? In between giggles, Peso Pluma and Nicki Nicole got sweet and flirty while speaking to Rolling Stone on their first red carpet together at the 2023 Latin Grammys.
“I’m so happy to be accompanied tonight,” Nicole said coyly, referring to Peso.
“I’m supporting the queen!” Pluma joked.
Both artists are up for awards. “Ella Baila Sola” was nominated for Best Regional Mexican Song and is up for Song of the Year. Meanwhile, Nicole is competing for several awards, including Best...

Nicki Nicole and Bad Gyal aren’t afraid of getting a little freaky. On Tuesday night, the Argentine-Spanish pair released their reggaetón collaboration, “Enamórate,” or “fall in love,” along with its candlelit music video.
The Ballve-shot video sees Bad Gyal dancing provocatively from atop a bed with golden sheets as Nicole joins for her verse, posing in front of a room filled with candles. The pair drop bars about hypnotizing a lover with their looks as they empower each other and celebrate their unique flow.

Editor’s Note: This review originally published during the 2023 Locarno Film Festival. Dekanalog will release “Sweet Dreams” in U.S. theaters on Friday, April 12.
Two-thirds of the way into Ena Sendijarević’s stylized sophomore feature “Sweet Dreams”, a heavily pregnant white Dutch colonialist, Josefien (Lisa Zweerman), is attempting to relieve some pent-up hormonal tension by straddling her bedpost and getting herself off. It is at this exact moment that an Indonesian housegirl, Siti (Hayati Azis), walks in bearing a jug of water and a glass.
Josefien experiences no shame and seizes her chance to manipulate Siti, for Siti has the status afforded by bearing the illegitimate son, Karel (Rio Den Haas), of the recently deceased plantation head, Jan (Hans Dagelet). Unbeknownst to Siti, Jan left it all to Karel and now the young heir and his mother both have targets on their backs for Jan’s older son, Cornelius (Florian Myjer...

Since 2001, Cannes Film Festival has gone to the dogs — literally, as the annual Palm Dog awards ceremony has celebrated the best canine performers in cinema for the past 22 years! The yearly ceremony is held at Cannes, honoring all of the best doggy actors that were involved in films that screened at the festival, and it's probably the most important award given out besides the Palme d'Or. This year's competition was one of the fiercest in years, with numerous canines battling it out for the award, which has gone to such prestigious pups as Sayuri the Pit Bull, who played Brandy in "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood," and Uggie the Jack Russell Terrier, who played Jack in "The Artist." But how did it all come about, and who won this year's Palm Dog?
The original Palm Dog was a bit of an inside joke, created by Palm Dog host Toby Rose...

In 2006, Aki Kaurismäki was asked what he felt young filmmakers lacked. His response was almost Cartesian: “Humility,” the director suggested, “Above all, it is necessary to forget oneself.” The Finnish auteur returns with Fallen Leaves, a charming, moving, bittersweet romance packed with all the lovely things we’ve come to associate with him after four decades. The locations and colors still come in admirable shades of mustard and pea soup––as do the characters and their moods. As a film, Fallen Leaves could hardly be simpler––two people living separate, lonesome lives meet and maybe fall in love––but there is beauty in that simplicity and, as ever, Kaurismäki’s characters live far richer inner lives.
Few filmmakers warm the soul with such economy: Fallen Leaves is funny, heartbreaking, and only 82 minutes long. Alma Pöysti stars as Ansa, a supermarket worker who loses her job when she’s caught pocketing an expired sandwich.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Succession."
Maybe we were foolish to get our hopes up. For weeks now, "Succession" fans have been side-eying the show's main couple, crossing our fingers and hoping that cutthroat one-percenter Shiv (Sarah Snook) and folksy new money weirdo Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) might yet make their marriage work. On social media, fans have whipped up fancams, scrutinized the characters' body language, and created a copious amount of art referencing Macfadyen's role in 2005's "Pride and Prejudice." When the pair finally did rekindle their romance, viewers celebrated. Yet just one week after the pair's apparent reconciliation — which, within the speedrun timeline of the final season is closer to a day or two — they're already on the outs again.
Tom and Shiv's latest fight was the blowout they never had when their marriage ended with a whimper (and a knife in the back) between seasons.

One thing Douglas Adams taught us in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is this: Dolphins usually know what's up when it comes to visitors from outer space. They're ahead of the curve at the beginning of "Cocoon," too, which opens with the friendly marine mammals frolicking in a sunken city before witnessing strange lights beaming through the clouds.
Ron Howard's fourth feature shares similarities with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," although the beats are different. Its focus is on a group of seniors hitching a ride with friendly aliens to avoid illness and mortality, rather than a guy who is quite happy leaving his kids behind for a fantastic UFO journey. It's one of that '80s micro-genre of sci-fi movies centering around elderly actors, which Steven Spielberg had a big hand in. "Kick the Can," his segment in "Twilight Zone: The Movie," followed a group of...

We’re getting a first look at FX’s The Full Monty, the eight-part follow-up to the BAFTA-winning movie. FX has released some of the first images from the series that will premiere in June (date Tba) and stream exclusively in the U.S. on Hulu.
Set 25 years after the film, the eight-episode series will follow the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors. The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier and more desperate moments. It will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.
The original movie’s screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) returns, along with co-writer Alice Nutter (Accused), and Uberto Pasolini (Nowhere Special) also coming back as executive producer.

We previously learned about Astrid’s backstory in “Welcome to Eden,” episode 5, how her father’s death infuriated her and drove her to seek vengeance on Som’s father, who was responsible for this catastrophe in her life. Eloy’s life, on the other hand, was saved thanks to Isaac’s relentless plea to his parents. Eloy returned to his friends and informed them of Astrid’s interplanetary communication. Previously, in “Welcome to Eden,” Episode 3, Nico learned that Saul had threatened Astrid with death. Saul was the one who’d even attacked Erick and stabbed him. Saul, however, had to kill Nico by stabbing a knife into his neck while he was on his way to hand himself in. After Nico vanished, Eden implemented a voting system, and it was agreed that senior staff would determine who would survive and who would die. Saul, meanwhile, was planning a follow-up assault on Astrid while revealing his identity as the assailant who stabbed Erick. Furthermore, Mayka assisted Charly and Africa in escaping the cell, yet, Africa struck Saul in the head to protect Astrid. Though Africa had a chance to survive as she saved Astrid’s life, Charly was able to get out of the cell in the interim. Let’s see what decision Astrid would take against Charly.

Previously in Episode 1 of “Welcome To Eden” Season 2, we saw Africa being captured by Astrid after discovering the transmission room. Though Astrid planned to kill her later, Erick, who had recently recovered from his injury, wanted to protect Africa. He informed Africa of their interplanetary endeavor to discover a new Eden and relocate there. Africa didn’t buy it, but Erick appeared to be telling the truth. It could have been a fervent belief or the final truth that Astrid’s cult was working towards. However, Zoa and Gabi met in Eden and chose to keep their relationship a secret. Following Ulises’ death, level-two guards were instructed to identify the murderer, and Eva assisted them by claiming that Eloy had killed Ulises. Danae, one of the level-two security personnel, mercilessly tortured Eloy. Astrid gave the order to kill Eloy the next morning, and Alma was given the duty.

Nina Kiri, known for her role as Alma on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has joined the cast of dystopian sci-fi adventure “Absolution.”
The title will be brought onto the market at Cannes’ Marché du Film Frontières platform, featuring in its Proof of Concept strand.

Directed by Filip Kovacevic, “Absolution” – a co-production between Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro – takes place in a barren wasteland, far removed from the mythical city of gods, with only one human settlement left.

Human suffering, thy name is The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 3.
With June captured and the rest of the rogue handmaids on the run, you can guess the level of physical and emotional torture that takes place in this installment of Hulu’s dystopian drama. I’m warning you up front: It was hard to watch and hard to write about, and therefore I’m not going to delve into all of the finer points of the horrors visited upon our girl. And it ends with the death of two of June’s comrades, so prepare yourself.

You’ve gotta admire how The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Serena just can’t stop herself from competing with June — as we see in Episode 2, even Mrs. Waterford’s fallopian tubes are in on the neverending quest to best her former handmaid!
Yep, the thing that the Waterfords thought would never happen does, actually, come to pass in “Nightshade”: Serena finds out that she’s pregnant. Sure, both of the Waterfords are currently being held in a Canadian facility as they wait to find out whether they’ll be convicted as war criminals, but hey, details!
