- Originally from Kazakhstan, Zhannat is a London-based writer/director.
Her work has been screened at numerous international film festivals (Cannes - Cinéfondation, Sundance, TIFF, Locarno (Pardino d'Argento award for the Best Short Film), Clermont - Ferrand, Les Arcs, etc); has shown at prestigious institutions such as Barbican Centre (UK), Tate Modern (UK), Art Basel (Switzerland) and The Asian Film Archive (Singapore).
She is developing several feature film projects. A Winner is Seen at the Start (France/Kazakhstan) is supported by CNC, Hubert Bals Script and Development Fund, Region Sud co-production development fund, BoostNL and EWA award. Mother Tongue (France/Kazakhstan) is supported by ARTE Development Award. Present Perfect (Film 4, UK) will be Zhannat's first English-language film.
Zhannat holds an MA degree in Filmmaking from the London Film School. She is a Berlinale Talents, Locarno Directing Workshop (mentored by Bela Tarr) and TIFF Filmmakers Lab alumni. In 2019 Zhannat got selected for Bela Tarr's directing workshop, where she developed and shot a film Paola Makes A Wish (2019), produced by Locarno Film Festival, CISA and Ticino Film Commission. The film got screened at more than 20 film festivals, including Locarno, Sundance, PÖFF Shorts and it was also featured as Vimeo Staff pick and Short of the week.
Zhannat's most recent short film History of Civilization (2020) won Pardino d'argento award at Locarno Film Festival. The film was also selected for TIFF, Hamptons IFF, Clermont-Ferrand, Les Arcs, Cairo IFF and others.
Zhannat has two two feature projects in development. "Mother Tongue" was presented at Asian Project Market, where it won ARTE development award. "A Winner is Seen at the Starts" won three awards at When East Meets West co-production forum - Best Woman Director award (European Women's Audiovisual Network), Pop-up film residency award and Film Centre Serbia development award. The project is also supported with Hubert Bals Script and Development fund and BoostNL.
