Tubi hired Mike Bidgoli, a six-year veteran of internet giant Meta, as chief product and technology officer for the Fox-owned free streaming service.
Bidgoli, who reports to CEO Anjali Sud, will be responsible for leading the product and engineering teams overseeing the product experience and innovation strategy for Tubi. Marios Assiotis, who previously served as Tubi’s Cto, earlier this year moved over to Adrise, the audience network and ad tech platform that Fox acquired as part of the Tubi deal in 2020. Meanwhile, Michael Ahiakpor, formerly Tubi’s chief product officer, said he left the company in April after 11 years with the company “to focus on my health and happiness.”

While the biggest entertainment companies are caught in an SVOD fight to the death, viewership numbers suggest audiences are spending more time with free streamers. Industry watchers have noted the increasing rise of the free Tubi service as a noteworthy success. According to Nielsen, people spent more time watching Tubi than Peacock, Max, or Paramount+ last month.
The success isn’t just because Tubi is free. Pluto TV is also free, but Nielsen reports it only pulled half the viewership of Tubi in March.
So why is Tubi white hot these days?
CEO Anjali Sud explained the streamer’s strategy on the podcast “The Town.” Tubi isn’t chasing the same audiences as Netflix or Hulu. “Forty percent of our audience are not on other traditional streamers,” Sud said.
The company is planning to focus more on underserved audiences moving forward. “You are going to see us use original (movies...

Coming on the heels of Baz Luhrman’s decision to re-edit “Australia” into a mini-series for Hulu, taking an already long film and stretching it well beyond its breaking point in “Faraway Downs,” Veena Sud has chosen to do the opposite for the streaming service. Taking her forgotten Quibi show “The Stranger” — a short-form web series about a rideshare driver (Maika Monroe) who picks up a deranged stalker (Dane DeHaan), leading to the worst night of life — and reformatting it as a lean 90-minute film, Sud recontextualizes Quibi’s ten-minute episodes into a highly episodic, and occasionally bumpy, thriller.

Writer/director Veena Sud‘s Hulu movie “The Stranger” is a one-night thriller that allows for only a couple of scenes before rideshare driver Clare (Maika Monroe) realizes she’s made a horrible mistake picking up passenger Carl (Dane DeHaan). From that point, the movie is a nonstop adrenaline rush and so perfectly paced that the most surprising thing about it is that it didn’t begin as a feature film at all — this new Hulu movie is a re-edit of a series Sud initially made for Quibi.
Before its swift demise, Quibi was a platform designed for people to watch shows in 10-minute episodes on their phones, with content presented in dual simultaneous aspect ratios so that one could watch the episodes either vertically or horizontally. The unique format provided filmmakers like Sud, Mark Pellington, and Catherine Hardwicke opportunities to experiment with new ways of storytelling; it also gave...

Veena Sud is no stranger to the tangled streaming rights game when it comes to distribution.
After her Quibi series folded, the filmmaker is now bringing her breakout horror hit “The Stranger” to Hulu with a new director’s cut. “Longlegs” actress and horror staple Maika Monroe plays a rideshare driver who goes through a twelve-hour fight for survival when she picks up Carl (Dane DeHaan), a passenger who becomes her worst nightmare. Avan Jogia co-stars in the former series which is now a feature film.
“The Stranger” began as a Quibi series, which meant that Sud co-owned the copyright to the work, as part of the Quibi business model. Sud is now able to “self-distribute” the footage, recut as a feature.

In April 2020, “The Stranger,” the story of a driver who picks up the rideshare passenger from hell, debuted on Quibi with the world in lockdown. Like most of the bite-sized pieces of entertainment that premiered on the service it came and went without much fanfare, a fate that ultimately was shared by Quibi itself. Launched by Jeffrey Katzenberg with the idea of making short pieces of content that could be consumed on smartphones by people in transit, Quibi had the misfortune of launching as Covid-19 was leading the world into an extended period of couch potato-dom.
“Obviously, the timing was unfortunate,” says Veena Sud, the writer, director and show-runner of “The Stranger.” “But Jeffrey was very generous in supporting all of us filmmakers over the course of making our shows. It just didn’t succeed.”
But “The Stranger” has a fresh chance to connect with audiences who may have missed it the first time around.

Veena Sud's 2010s TV series The Killing (based on Forbrydelsen by Søren Sveistrup) is still one of the most enthralling viewing experiences I've ever had, so I'm especially thrilled that Veena's 2020 Quibi series The Stranger (starring Maika Monroe as a rideshare driver who encounters a killer client plalyed by Dane DeHaan) has been re-cut as a feature film that will arrive on Hulu on April 15th:

Once upon a time, a bunch of disgustingly wealthy entertainment executives got together with a dream — a dream that answers the question, "What if people consumed film and TV in short segments like a TikTok playlist, but on a brand new platform that no one is going to pay to use with a bananas ridiculous name?" The result was Quibi, a short-form streaming platform that went as quickly as it came, shutting down after only seven months of operation and hemorrhaging over a billion dollars from investors.
The downfall of Quibi rivals that of fellow colossal "good idea on paper but never gonna happen in execution" entertainment failure, MoviePass, but came with the depressing caveat that Quibi actually produced a huge chunk of *content* that was now at risk of being drop-kicked into the unstreamable void of tax write-off and nothingness unless other platforms stepped in to save them. Fox Corp. streaming service Tubi has updated its brand identity, with a new logo whose letters are designed to echo the company’s invitation to viewers to “find your rabbit hole.”
Compared with the prior orange-and-black palette, the new brand features more vibrant colors and the interface welcomes viewers with a playful audio tone. The updated homepage and user interface invoke the rabbit-hole concept, which was first introduced in a Super Bowl ad in 2023.
The refresh comes three weeks shy of the fourth anniversary of Fox’s acquisition of the service in 2020. It has continued growing significantly since the $440 million transaction, helping Fox offset declines in linear viewership and advertising. Fox cited Tubi as a key contributor to the company’s 12% year-over-year increase in ad revenue in fiscal 2023.
Last September, Fox announced that Tubi had surpassed 74 million monthly active users. In January, according to Nielsen, Tubi accounted for 1.5% of all TV viewing,...

Vimeo‘s longtime CEO is moving on.
Anjali Sud, who joined Vimeo in 2014 as its director of marketing and was named chief executive officer in 2017, is exiting to become CEO of Tubi.
It’s not exactly surprising Sud is going elsewhere. Vimeo, founded in 2004, has had a tough last couple of years, with a disastrous IPO leading to significant layoffs. The most recent round of cuts, in January of this year, shaved off 11% of Vimeo’s workforce. Sud called it “a very hard decision that impacts each of us deeply.”
Now, she’s moving on to Fox Corp., where she’ll take over from Tubi’s former CEO, founder Farhad Massoudi. She’ll officially start Sept. 1, and will report to Tubi Media Group CEO Paul Cheesbrough.

The film, which is set to start shooting in northeastern Italy on Aug. 7, centers on an aging countess (Shammah) who sets up a new type of school with a group of disenfranchised yet gifted children in her spacious villa.
Palazzo Panigai-Ovio in Pordenone
The producers have found an ideal 17th-century villa — the Palazzo Panigai-Ovio — in the northeastern province of Pordenone, about 100 kilometers west of Trieste, where Kineofilm is based. Bisatti also plans to shoot outdoor scenes in nearby Veneto.
The film’s cast includes Valeria Cavalli and Pamela Villoresi as well as Pellicciari.

2022 was a rough year for Vimeo, and the video platform is starting 2023 on its heels. Its CEO, Anjali Sud, has announced a round of layoffs that will affect 11 of employees.
Vimeo, which will celebrate its 19th birthday this year, has had a long career as an alternative online video platform aimed at businesses and indie creators. However, like many digital media companies, Vimeo has struggled to keep up with volatile economic conditions over the past two years. In a note sent to her employees, Sud cited “prolonged geopolitical conflict, rising interest rates, and global recession fears” as factors in “a further deterioration in economic conditions.”
“This was a very hard decision that impacts each of us deeply,” Sud wrote. “It is also the right thing to do to enable Vimeo to be a more focused and successful company, operating with the necessary discipline in an uncertain economic environment. It positions...

Vimeo is laying off 11 percent of its staff amid an “uncertain economic environment,” CEO Anjali Sud said in a message to employees shared publicly on Wednesday.
The latest round of cuts comes roughly half a year after the company last cut about 6 percent of its staff in July. Since then, Sud said that while the video software company has sought to reduce its expenses outside of headcount costs, the firm has “seen a further deterioration in economic conditions, in the form of prolonged geopolitical conflict, rising interest rates, and global recession fears.”
The current round of layoffs will primarily impact staff in departments like sales and research and development, which account for the majority of Vimeo’s overall workforce, according to Sud.
