Fans were shocked to hear that “NCIS: Hawai’i,” the newest series in CBS’ “NCIS” franchise, had been canceled after three seasons last week. At a press briefing in Los Angeles, CBS executives said the decision came down to a balance of cost and ratings, as well as cohesion across the network’s 2024-2025 schedule.
“It is incumbent on us to always keep the schedule fresh, keep momentum going. We had to make some really tough choices this year,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach told reporters. “Everything came back [from the Hollywood strikes] really strong, but ultimately we have to look at the cohesiveness of the schedule flow. We have to evaluate the financials and the performance overall, and we make tough decisions.”
When asked whether there was a chance of un-cancellation, as happened when CBS reversed its decision to end “S.W.A.T.” on two separate occasions, Reisenbach said no.

It came down to the wire, but NCIS: Hawai’i ultimately didn’t make the cut for next season at CBS. The news comes days before the network is set to announce its fall schedule on May 2 and before the Season 3 finale of Hawai’i is scheduled to air on May 6. According to sources, the episode was not meant to be a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come but fans won’t be left reeling by a major cliffhanger.
The cancellation is not a complete shocker since, as Deadline has been reporting, NCIS: Hawai’i was on the bubble. Still, the outcome is surprising since an effort was made to extend the well performing drama’s run for at least an abbreviated fourth and final season, with producers agreeing to a massive budget cut and open to other concessions in order to keep the show going.

CBS is shutting down one of its NCIS field offices.
The network has canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The show’s season — and now series — finale is set to air on May 6.
The series, which stars Vanessa Lachey and added former NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J to its cast this season, will likely end up as the most watched show to be canceled this season — topping two other canceled CBS shows, CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd. NCIS: Hawai’i is averaging about 7.8 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings this season, and it hits 10 million viewers over 35 days of cross-platform viewing.
Those numbers would make for easy renewals most anyplace else, but they put NCIS: Hawai’i only in the middle of the pack at CBS. The network will also introduce a new NCIS series in the 2024-25 season, a prequel subtitled Origins that follows a...

“NCIS: Hawai’i” has been canceled at CBS.
The “NCIS” spinoff is currently airing its third season at the broadcast network. The season finale scheduled to air on May 6 will now serve as the series finale.
“NCIS: Hawai’i” was the fourth series in the “NCIS” franchise and is now the third series to end. Both “NCIS: New Orleans” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” ended in the past few years after seven and 14 seasons respectively.
That is not to say the franchise is not still going strong. The mothership series was renewed at the beginning of April. CBS is also prepping a prequel series about a young Jethro Leroy Gibbs, while Paramount+ is readying a spinoff that will see the returns of both Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly. Paramount+ and CBS also air “NCIS: Sydney,” which was renewed for a second season in March.

[This story contains spoilers for the second-season finale of NCIS: Hawai’i.]
The season two finale of NCIS: Hawai’i introduced — or rather, reintroduced — a character who will join the cast next season.
In the episode, Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson) find themselves under attack in Venezuela — until an unseen ally comes to their aid. Jane’s phone rings, and a very familiar voice is on the other end: Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), last seen in the Moroccan desert in the series finale of NCIS: Los Angeles on Sunday night.
After Tennant thanks him for the overwatch, Hanna says he was “in the neighborhood” and thought he could lend a hand. “You just happened to be in Venezuela?” she asks.
“Morocco, actually, but hey — what’s a few borders and an ocean, anyway?” he replies.

There’s really good news for Kacy fans heading into NCIS: Hawai’i Season 2: That happiness from the finale will continue. The first season ended with Kate’s (Tori Anderson) grand gesture for Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami), which worked to win her back. You can soon re-watch that moment, along with Season 1 on DVD on September 6 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment. It includes featurettes, deleted and extended scenes (including the exclusive one above), and a gag reel. When TV Insider spoke with Anderson, the star chatted about singing, teased what’s ahead for Kacy, and more. Kate’s grand gesture in the finale worked! Tori Anderson: That came as a bit of a shock. I got a phone call before the script was released from [writer] Matt Bosack, and he just said, “This is what we’re thinking, do you have any feelings about this?” He wanted to just...

Couple power! In the island crime procedural’s spectacular Season 1 closer, boss Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) races to save her love interest, Capt. Joe Milius (Enver Gjokaj), as he tries to save the world. Reunited in the May 16 episode, the two were overseeing a Russia-u.S. prisoner exchange that went colossally, lethally wrong. As a result, Milius tries “to tamp down tensions between Russia and the U.S. Somebody wants war, maybe Russia — maybe somebody else. There’s a body count, and Milius could be next,” reveals NCIS: Hawai’i executive producer Matt Bosack. On top of all the action (one explosive scene was shot at Pearl Harbor on a naval destroyer), another romantic duo, NCIS’s Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami) and the FBI’s Whistler (Tori Anderson), “finally get on the same page,” the EP says. Cyber specialist Ernie (Jason Antoon) will be “stirring the pot and pushing them closer,...

The entire NCIS franchise will be returning for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. CBS has renewed flagship NCIS for a milestone 20th season, which would tie Gunsmoke as the third-longest-running U.S. primetime drama series only behind Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order. It also has picked up its top freshman drama NCIS: Hawai’i for a second season and, as it approaches its 300th episode, NCIS: Los Angeles for a 14th season.
The three dramas join CBS’ previously announced renewals of The Amazing Race, Bob ♥ Abishola, CSI: Vegas, Ghosts, The Neighborhood, Secret Celebrity Renovation, Survivor, Tough As Nails and Young Sheldon. Additional renewals, including for CBS’ other strong procedural drama franchise, FBI, will be coming soon.
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
NCIS has successfully navigated the leading man transition from Mark Harmon to Gary Cole, securing a renewal. The venerable drama is the No.
