“Party with the Hardy!” exclaims Gold Derby senior editor Marcus James Dixon, announcing that Laine Hardy had been crowned the Season 17 “American Idol” winner. “We all kind of thought that Laine would win,” Dixon continues, “but still a part of me wondered, ‘Is Alejandro Aranda gonna pull this off?'” Dixon is joined by fellow senior editor Susan Wloszczyna and Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson to discuss Laine’s victory, whether they think judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie wanted Alejandro to win, Madison VanDenburg‘s nerves and the greatest performances of the finale. Watch the video above to hear their full thoughts.

In one of his first interviews since winning “American Idol” Season 17, country singer Laine Hardy just told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest that he can’t wait to “get started working on music.” Laine took the red eye from Los Angeles to New York City in order to appear on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” in the wee hours of Monday morning. “I slept like three hours on the way here,” the 18-year-old mumbled to the morning hosts while donning his flowered suit jacket. Watch the interview above, which also includes Laine’s performance of his original song “Flame.”

One of the most viral contestants of “American Idol” this season was someone who didn’t even make it to the live shows: Shayy. This 18-year-old high school student from Midlothian, Va recently lost her vision due to a brain tumor, which the doctors were only partially able to remove. Shayy’s initial audition of Andra Day‘s “Rise Up” was the most-watched audition of Season 17, which is why it was so shocking to see her eliminated in the Hawaii showcase round. The good news for “American Idol” fans is that Shayy returned during Sunday’s season finale to perform “Rise Up” with — who else? — the original singer herself. Watch the video above.

American Idol wrapped its 17th season on Sunday, delivering a three-hour extravaganza filled with live music, familiar faces and, as always, crippling disappointment.
In addition to the three remaining contestants — Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — a number of eliminated singers also returned to perform in the finale. Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon joined forces with Katy Perry, while Laci Kaye Booth shared the stage with Luke Bryan. Dimitrius Graham also came back to sing with Adam Lambert, while Alyssa Raghu performed with Kane Brown, and Uché got his dance on with Kool & the Gang.

Hey, "American Idol" fans. Tonight, May 5, 2019, the final 6 American Idol contestants performed Live once again. However, this time, they performed not one, but two songs. Their first set of songs were inspired by the Woodstock music festival. The second set of songs were titled “Inspirational Showstoppers.” American Idol alum and Ccm star Lauren Daigle arrived to mentor the singers through the Showstopper performances. All the judges: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were on hand, and they still had a "save" in play to rescue one lucky contestant from elimination. Tonight's Live show started off with the Woodstock performances. Madison Vandenberg hit the stage first to sing, "Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin/Erma Franklin. Afterwards, Katy told Madison, “Oh my gush! You flung your pony! I don’t want you to be second. I want you to win this thing. I think the second half was better than the first half.

“American Idol” ended Sunday’s live episode with a shocker after Ryan Seacrest revealed the last of the four artists from the Top 6 to make the cut. Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie opted to use their single save of the season to throw a lifeline to Laci Kaye Booth, one of the two eliminated contestants. That meant Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon was the only Top 6 finalist eliminated on May 5. (Did the judges save the right contestant?)

The Sunday May 5 episode of “American Idol” spotlighted the Top 6. Each of these half dozen finalists sang two tunes: one from the summer of 1969 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock musical festival and another chosen as inspirational by Grammy-winning Christian singer Lauren Daigle, who got her start on the show.
As the show was seen live from coast-to-coast, America cast votes for their favorites in real-time. The results were revealed by host Ryan Seacrest at the end of the two-hour episode. The top four vote-getters — Alejandro Aranda, , Wade Cota, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — moved on in the competition to be crowned winner of season 17.
The bottom two — Laci Kaye Booth and Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon — were to be eliminated unless the judges chose to use their single save of the season. After a nerve-wracking few moments, Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie opted to throw a lifeline to Laci.

Everything comes with an expiration date, including the American Idol judges’ coveted save, and Sunday’s episode marked their final opportunity to use it this season. Six singers remained atop the two-hour event, but as we learned from last week’s double elimination of Walker Burroughs and Alyssa Raghu, no one — not even someone the judges love enough to nickname — is ever really safe.

Sunday’s “American Idol” episode showcases the Top 6 who will sing two songs each: one that is inspirational and the other from 50 years ago. If the viewers vote along the lines of their responses to our recent survey, it will be the end of the road for the two remaining women in the competition: Laci Kaye Booth and be Madison VanDenburg. They earned a mere 6% and 8% respectively in our poll.
Two of the four fellows still standing also look like they could be in trouble: Wade Cota has just 12% of the vote count while Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon sits at just 10%. Adding together the support for these four contestants comes to 36% of the total.
That sum is easily eclipsed by Alejandro Aranda, who has registered an impressive 38%. His closest competition, Laine Hardy, has risen to 26% of the vote to date.

Even after all these years, “American Idol” is still TV’s most-watched reality show. Per TV By The Numbers, ABC’s “Idol” topped all others for the final week of April with 2.0 million viewers in the all-important 18-49 demographic. In fact, it was the #2 program of the week in that age group behind only “The Big Bang Theory” with 2.3 million. As for its closest reality TV competition in the demo, “Survivor” came in with 1.9 million while “The Voice” (Monday) scored 1.5 million and “The Voice” (Tuesday) earned 1.2 million.

Laci Kaye Booth is all but certain to face elimination on “American Idol” this Sunday according to the results of our poll of viewers. She made the Top 8 on last Sunday’s Queen Night episode. But she has earned only a measly 6% in our survey of “American Idol” fans heading into the Top 6 show on May 5.
The other contestant joining her in the bottom two is likely to be Madison VanDenburg who merited a mere 8% in our poll results. Each can only avoid elimination if they are saved by judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie who can invoke this power just one time in season 17.
All six singers still in the competition will take to the stage on Sunday to perform inspirational tunes. Of the other four artitsts, Wade Cota and Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon look the most vulnerable. Wade has only 12% support while Jeremiah is at 10%. Combined, these...

“There was a lot of outrage over Walker being sent home,” says Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson when discussing the recent elimination of both Walker Burroughs and Alyssa Raghu on Season 17 of “American Idol.” “A lot of people thought Wade [Cota] should have been the one to go,” he continues. “People are saying the judges should have used their save on Walker.” Davidson joins senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Susan Wloszczyna to discuss the most recent eliminations, the recently revealed Top 6 and who the judges might save now.
“I think Wade thinks he should have gone home!” Wloszczyna jokes. “It was not a good night for dear Wade. I don’t think any of that [Queen] music really suited him. I don’t think Alyssa deserved to have him as a singing partner because [‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’] was not meant for his voice. It was like two people doing karaoke separately because they never meshed as a couple singing.

On a night beset by forgotten lyrics, a dearth of commanding stage presence and disjointed duets, it was judge Katy Perry who made the biggest faux pas on the show where the Top 8 were whittled down to 6, according to 27% of “American Idol” fans.
The awkward moment came after Season 17’s cute country dude Laine Hardy and throaty darling Laci Kaye Booth trilled the Johnny and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson” from the biopic “Walk the Line,” about a quickie marriage that has cooled, as their movie duet (see video above). Judge Lionel Richie applauded Laci’s sassiness as well as the pair’s comfort in doing the song together.
But Katy dared to go a step farther, as she stated, “Yeah, I would say you guys are connected. I’ve never seen you smile that large, Laine. I’d be wondering if something else … listen that’s what you want people to feel.

What could have been a brilliant show on “American Idol” last night ended up being a series of missed opportunities and bone-headed choices — with just enough fine performances in-between to keep you watching.
Like many, I was looking forward to watching Season 8 runner-up and current Queen front man Adam Lambert help the remaining eight wannabe stars step up their game as they tackle the iconic British rock band’s catalog of songs. But it didn’t take long after the contestants sang “We Will Rock You” during the opening for me to realize that this episode might be a rocky enterprise at best.
Let’s start with the positive, though. Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon definitely won the night (see video above). Not only were his church pastor father and mother — who weren’t pleased when he recently told them he was gay — have since reconciled with their son and were in...

Queen frontman and “‘American Idol’ legend,” to quote host Ryan Seacrest, returned to where it all started to mentor the current season’s top eight finalists for a Queen-themed night of hits.
It’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago, Lambert first performed with Queen on the “Idol” stage and began his journey with the legendary band. The story of his rise from reality show star to international rock star will be explored in a documentary airing on ABC Monday night (April 29): “The Show Must Go On: The Queen and Adam Lambert Story.”
Lambert marked the occasion with the debut of a new, long-haired look, which, coupled with a classic poofy shirt, took contestant Walker Burroughs by surprise. “You look like a pirate,” he exclaimed.
Ever the gentleman, Lambert remained unfazed, immediately putting Burroughs at ease for his mentoring session.
As a mentor, Lambert is a true scene stealer.

Hey, "American Idol" fans. Happy Sunday. Your top 8 finalists definitely did compete tonight, April 28, 2019, and after it was all said and done, only 6 were left standing. They performed songs from the Queen catalog. Former season 8 runner up and current Queen lead singer ,Adam Lambert, mentored the Idol finalists this week. The viewing audience ,once again, watched Live and voted simultaneously to ultimately vote out two unfortunate contestants. The judges: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were, of course, on hand, and they still all had the opportunity to use a "save" on one of the singers to keep them in the competition if they got voted out. Voting for the Top 6 on “American Idol” begins at the start of the live nationwide broadcast on Sunday, April 28. You will only have until the last commercial break of Queen Night to cast votes for your favorites. There are three ways to make your voice heard via the app, online and text.
You can vote up to 10 times per method for each of the remaining eight contestants. This means you can cast up to 30 votes for each and every artist that you want to see continue in season 17. And you can reallocate your votes throughout the evening as the Top 8 perform both a Queen song and a movie song duet with one of the other contestants. All you have to do is click “save” each time that you change your choices.
You must be at least 13 years of age and resident in the U.S., Puerto Rico or the Virgin...
