This article contains spoilers for Ghosts season 3 episode 2.
Last week, CBS comedy Ghosts resolved an enormous cliffhanger in its season 3 premiere. Now episode 2, “Man of Your Dreams,” provides the answer to another long standing mystery. Tonight, Sas’ special supernatural power is revealed and it raises some ethical questions as to how he can alter the actions of the living.
“Man of Your Dreams” also serves as the transition point between the shock of the premiere and the plotlines that will dominate the remainder of this third season. Den of Geek spoke to Ghosts showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman to discover why they chose to reveal Sas’ power and what fans can expect for the rest of this shorter-than-usual season.
“We still have a few big unanswered questions on the series,” Wiseman said. “We don’t know Pete or Hetty’s power, and we also don’t know how a couple of the ghosts died.

If you’d like to see the world’s saddest math equation, just watch “World’s Best.” After being given a lighthearted “equation of me” homework assignment on the first day of school, 12-year-old Prem Patel (Manny Magnus) formulates the following: Prem = (mom + dad) x math + Jerome – dad.” A math whiz still reeling from the loss of his father, Prem proves easy to root for as he navigates adolescence in “7 Days” director Roshan Sethi’s coming-of-age dramedy. But while the Disney+ original ultimately receives a passing grade, it doesn’t exactly ace the assignment the way its protagonist so often does.
Prem’s ostensible nemesis as he prepares for the upcoming Mathlympics competition is fellow math genius Claire (Piper Wallace), who literally haunts his stress dreams and proudly declares that her family “doesn’t celebrate summer” after being asked how she spent the last three months, while his best friend...

Showtime has made a decision on its last remaining current scripted series whose fate had been up in the air, opting not to pick up a second season of comedy I Love That for You. The news comes a year after the Season 1 run of the show starring Vanessa Bayer, who co-created it with Jeremy Beiler. The two serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Jessi Klein and Michael Showalter.
“I Love That for You has completed its run on Showtime,” a spokesperson for the network said in a statement. “We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward.”
As Deadline reported, there had been an internal effort to get the well-received series renewed. I Love That for You co-star Matt Rogers claimed in December that a second season of the show already had been written.

"Riding in cars with high schoolers?!" So dangerous! Disney has unveiled the official trailer for a comedy called World's Best, co-written by and starring actor / rapper Utkarsh Ambudkar. The film is about a young 12-year-old mathematics genius named Prem Patel who discovers his deceased father was actually a great rapper. He immediately sets out to pursue a career as a rap superstar, in addition to continuing to ace math competitions. Newcomer Manny Magnus stars as Prem, and Ambudkar appears as his father Suresh in visions to help him accomplish his dreams and overcome the bullying that is holding him back. The cast also includes Punam Patel, Jake Choi, Max Malas, Piper Wallace, Kayla Njeri, Dorian Giordano, and Kathryn Greenwood. "Dream exponentially" - is the tagline. This has that usual Disney cheesiness, with a cliche "follow your dreams" plot, though it looks like good fun. And the mix of math + rap is amusing.

But jealous ’90s finance bro Trevor (Asher Grodman), who got his flirt on with Bela last season, and drama-loving Native Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) have a different plan we won’t spoil: “Things never go quite the way that Sam anticipates,” McIver says in an understatement, “but there is a happy ending of sorts.” While Viking Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) is the resident Scrooge — believing Christmas is an appropriation of his Norse culture — other ghosts definitely have the spirit. The hour is a big one for Revolutionary War captain...

Network comedies are rare; great roles for Black actresses are even rarer. Now overlay that with being the breakout star of a hit network comedy and you’ve got some idea of the trajectory for Danielle Pinnock, the Boston-born, London-trained actress who’s also a first-generation immigrant from a Jamaican family.
“It changed my life,” Pinnock said of the CBS sitcom “Ghosts,” which became the 2021 season’s most-watched new comedy series and debuted its second season September 29 with a full 22-episode order. “I’m a plus-size Black woman and many of my roles have been occupationally driven. I would be the sassy librarian who’s like, ‘Get the Harry Potter book over there.'”
Comedy graveyards are littered with the British shows that didn’t survive the transition to American audiences — for every “The Office,” there’s a “Coupling” and “Bad Education” — but “Ghosts” is a happy exception. The conceit...

Fans who love Rose McIver in holiday programming (see “The Christmas Prince” and its sequels) as much as they love her in “Ghosts” are in for a Yuletide treat. This season, the CBS comedy will include a special double holiday episode, Variety has exclusively learned. The back-to-back episodes will air Thursday, Dec. 15.
Per the official description, “When Jay’s sister Bela (Punam Patel) returns to Woodstone Mansion for a holiday visit and brings along a platonic male friend, Samantha, inspired by the holiday rom-coms she adores, makes it her mission to spark a holiday romance between them. Meanwhile, the ghosts have conjured up a very different holiday plan — also involving Bela.”
“Ghosts” co-showrunners and executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman told Variety that they were excited to lean into the holidays with their hit show.

Vanessa Bayer takes the lead in more ways that one on her new Showtime comedy series “I Love That for You.” The Emmy-nominated actress created the show with her old “Saturday Night Live” buddy Jeremy Beiler, telling the story of a woman named Joanna who survived childhood cancer and lies about having it again to save her job at a home shopping network. Despite the trickiness of this concept, the writers approach the story tactfully, while also delivering on laughs. “It was definitely different from what I’ve done in the past to be the lead and to be writing it and doing all of that stuff at the same time,” says Bayer in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It was definitely a lot of responsibility, but it was also really fun.” Watch the full video chat above.

Showtime comedy “I Love That for You” traces a straight line back to “Saturday Night Live.” Not only did former “SNL” star Vanessa Bayer create the show with former “SNL” writer Jeremy Beiler, and Bayer’s co-star is “SNL” veteran Molly Shannon, but the relationship between the actresses’ characters also looks a lot like… Shannon and Bayer’s, back when they were on “SNL.”
They didn’t overlap on the show, but it remained a shared experience. The actresses grew up 10 minutes away from each other in Cleveland suburbs and brought their Midwestern sensibilities to the venerable comedy show.
“Like when Vanessa’s character is getting a makeover, I relate to her character because that’s how I felt when I started on ‘Saturday Night Live,” Shannon said at the show’s premiere and FYC event at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles Wednesday night. “You’re kind of green,...

We’ve got some “pretty cool” news for fans of Vanessa Bayer. Showtime on Monday handed a series order to I Love This for You (fka Big Deal), a half-hour comedy co-created and headlined by the Saturday Night Live alumna.
The single-camera series — which has been in development since 2018 — is inspired by Bayer’s own story of overcoming childhood leukemia. It centers on Bayer’s Joanna Gold, “who dreams of becoming a host at a home-shopping channel,” according to the official logline. “Working to shed her life-long label as ‘that cancer girl,’ she moves away from her parents, starts a...

A version of this story about “Search Party” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The fourth season of “Search Party” picks up almost exactly where the third left off: Dory (Alia Shawkat), having just come off a highly publicized murder trial, finds herself held prisoner by superfan “twink” Chip (Cole Escola) in a high-tech basement. Besides the horror of a steady diet comprised only of mealy chicken nuggets, Dory quickly discovers another gasp-inducing reality in captivity: Her living quarters, modeled painstakingly after her own apartment, are completely made of felt.
And not just a few items. Everything from her bookshelves to her lighting fixtures to her bathroom shower to (yes) the kitchen sink is plusher than Elmo’s elbow. “The concept was that of an asylum, a padded room trying to create this soft universe to show to Dory that Chip’s friendship...

A version of this story about “Dickinson” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
“If you take care of the small things, the big things take care of themselves,” poet Emily Dickinson once said, and designing a cheeky narrative surrounding her young life is absolutely no different. The AppleTV+ comedy “Dickinson” is tonally unlike most rooted-in-biography television series–a ribald, purposefully anachronistic creation, where men call each other “bro” and “dude” set against a pristine, period-specific backdrop yielding a true fidelity to the lives of its subjects, especially headstrong young Emily (Hailee Steinfeld). It’s not for nothing that half of the cast of Netflix’s “Big Mouth” has appeared on the show at some point.
But production designer Neil Patel insists that history always informs the creators. “Every show has its rules, and then the rules are meant to be broken. Our rule...

A version of this story about “Master of None” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If you have seen any of the third season of Netflix’s Emmy-winning “Master of None,” it’s readily apparent that it looks quite different from other seasons, almost to the point of wondering if you clicked on the right series from your onscreen menu. Not only is series lead Aziz Ansari’s Dev largely absent, but the focus is on Dev’s best friend Denise (series co-writer Lena Waithe) and her unpredictable marriage to Alicia (Naomi Ackie). But the boldest nuance is the show’s lush new appearance: shifting from digital to old-fashioned film stock, with the newly-cool-again 4:3 ratio more often seen in modern arthouse films.
“Aziz had known for the start that he wanted to shoot this on film”, says cinematographer Thimios Bakatakis, best known for his bold,...

This story about “Lovecraft Country” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Even in a television landscape that includes close to 500 scripted series, HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” might cross more genres and eras than any other. A hearty blend of science fiction, drama, horror, romance, revisionist history and even a modicum of actual biography, this phalanx of styles would prove daunting to even the most seasoned of designers. But under the mindful guidance of showrunner Misha Green, production designer Kalina Ivanov and costume designer Dayna Pink found a way to transform it into one cohesive visual universe.
“I think that was part of the draw,” Pink said. “What if you got to add your own style to something that already exists? It gave us room to be incredibly creative.” The creativity included more than 160 sets on five soundstages and a backlot, and 4,500 costumes which,...
