The 90’s were “very overbranded and just ridiculous,” says Melissa Walker, the costume designer for Hulu’s comedy “PEN15” starring Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine. “Luckily we had an amazing clearance team because so much of that is what really allows the nostalgia to flow with this show.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Anna, Maya and I were going through old photos and yearbooks,” Walker explains while discussing her research process. “I bought about 50 Y2K magazines. It was equally important to revisit these trends but then to also be able to take this large school and subdivide it into the different cliques. Maya specifically wore more hand-me-downs and was a few more steps behind the trend. We wanted to make sure we had the array of characters within this school setting.”

As production designer of the Hulu series PEN15, Grace Alie didn’t need to go far for research and inspiration. Along with a crew that also grew up in the early 2000s, Alie was able to work off their personal experiences to recreate their childhoods. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle created and star in this cringe comedy series on Hulu, where they play 13-year-old versions of themselves, aside actual 13-year-old actors, in 7th grade in the early 2000s. Due to budget constraints in season one, location scouting was the biggest challenge. After the success of the first season, Alie was able to build replicas of the sets on a stage, which brought its own set of challenges.
Deadline: What was the research process like and how much inspiration came from the memory of your own childhood?
Grace Alie: Well, a lot of it came from my memory. I’m...

Thanks to the success of the Hulu series Pen15, Ashlee Grubbs and her acting skills have been getting a lot of attention. As a newcomer for the show’s second season, Ashlee’s character may look sweet and innocent on the surface, but there’s much more to her than what we see on the surface. While it may seem like she came out of nowhere, Ashlee has actually been acting professionally for the last five years. She made her on screen debut in 2015 in a TV series called $tripped. She has earned over a dozen roles since then. Now with Pen15

A funny thing happens during Season Two of Hulu’s middle school comedy Pen15. Or, rather, it’s a not-so-funny thing, but a very interesting one.
You may recall that Pen15 stars thirtysomething actresses Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle (who created the show with Sam Zvibleman) as 13-year-old versions of themselves, opposite genuine middle schoolers. It’s a familiar sketch-comedy device — on SNL alone, everyone from Gilda Radner to Mike Myers to Amy Poehler played recurring kid characters — and the show’s first season leaned into the absurdity of two...

"Do you see her, too?" OceanWizard has debuted a full Us trailer for the film The Radiant One, a mystery thriller indie feature from writer/director Kristopher Dolphin. This psychological thriller is about a troubled man who turns himself in, believing he's harmed others but is at war with himself over the facts surrounding his quest for clarity and a brush with supernatural phenomena. There's much more going on in this, which the trailer points out better than describing everything in it. Dan Shaked stars as Ridley, and the full cast includes: Peyton McDavitt, Lindsey Cruz, Ashlee Grubbs, Toni Blair, Isaac Rhino, Sean Patrick Flaherty,, Alexander Dolphin, Karyn Anderson, and Kevin Flaherty. This looks a bit odd and also somewhat creepy, with weird things going on, but give it a chance and check it out. Tell us what you think. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Kristopher Dolphin's The Radiant One,...
