It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.
Here are some of the highlights:
Witchboard:

Latino-owned Luz Films announced its launch just before the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where its first film by first-time writer-director Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio, “In the Summers,” won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic competition. However, co-founder Sergio Lira says that impressive start isn’t nearly enough.
“This is an amazing win right out of the gate, but one is not enough,” said Lira, who serves as co-ceo with fellow founder Lynette Coll. “This is an amazing achievement that we did this right off the bat, but it’s a lot of what we’ve been diligently, silently working towards, and we want to keep doing it.”
With a mission of producing Latino-focused prestige and elevated-genre film and TV, the Luz principals know they face unique challenges. Shows for Latino audiences are often the first to be canceled or purged from streaming services. There aren’t enough global Latino...

I was fortunate to be in the audience late last week at San Diego Comic-Con when Chuck Russell surprised attendees of the "Bold Voices of Horror" panel with the first look at the trailer for his re-imagining of the 80's cult classic Witchboard! Having just wrapped filming weeks ago, this impressive trailer has me really excited for Chuck Russell's return to horror and you can see the trailer for yourself below:
"Emily (Madison Iseman) and her fiancé Christian (Aaron Dominguez) discover a mysterious Wiccan artifact, a pendulum board, as they prepare to open a bistro in New Orleans’ French Quarter. A darkness descends over Emily as she becomes obsessed with the board’s power of divination and ability to summon spirits. Desperate to help his fiancé, Christian seeks the advice of occult expert Alexander Babiaste (Jamie Campbell Bower). But Babiaste has secrets of his own, including his connection to a modern-day coven of witches.

Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) is getting the remake treatment couresty of director Chuck Russell, who was bringing us the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the remake of The Blob back in the days when Witchboard was gathering its earliest fans. The Witchboard remake doesn’t have a release date yet, but an early look trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above!
According to Deadline, Russell intends to go beyond the original Witchboard IP “with a deeper storyline, high intensity scares and imaginative visuals”. As such, the screenplay he has written with Greg McKay sounds quite different from the original film. Here’s the synopsis: Emily, her fiancé Christian and a group of their friends open an organic café, refurbishing an old carriage house in New Orleans’ French Quarter. But...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from the Season 2 finale of HBO Max’s Gossip Girl.
It was never supposed to end this way. HBO Max‘s Gossip Girl took its final bow on Thursday as the Season 2 finale hit the streamer. Since news of the show’s cancellation broke last week, the episode now also serves as a series finale.
Showrunner Josh Safran told Deadline that he’s holding on to a glimmer of hope that the series might land at a new home, but he’s had an inkling for months that this might happen, considering the growing number of streaming cancellations and Gossip Girl‘s hefty price tag.
“I asked HBO Max if I actually could go back in [to the episode]. I had the idea to take some of the cliffhangers out, because there were a lot of cliffhangers,” Safran said. “We got the editorial team back together. I...

"I am never giving up on us." A24 has debuted a striking "promo trailer" for The Inspection, which just premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last month and is playing at the New York Film Festival this month. It's the narrative debut of filmmaker Elegance Bratton - a remarkable retelling of the filmmaker’s own life story. The film follows a young man who enlists in the Marine Corps after being thrown out of his mother’s home because he is gay. After being rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, he joins the Marines trying to do whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. Starring Jeremy Pope as Ellis French (in what looks to be a major breakout performance), with Gabrielle Union, Bokeem Woodbine, Raúl Castillo, McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, and Nicholas Logan. This 60-second trailer includes a brief intro from Gabrielle Union,...

We know that Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) survives — and thrives, we hope — because Elegance Bratton survived. And, yes, thrived: turning his deeply painful, wonderfully human life story into his first narrative feature, the remarkable “The Inspection.” Bratton’s artful eye previously caught the attention of the indie documentary community, care of his rich “Pier Kids,” and he seamlessly carries over his ability to navigate complex human emotions (read: complex humans) into his own attempt at an autobiography. How lucky we are he is here to tell this story and, as ever, we can only hope to tell more.
Loosely based on Bratton’s own unexpected early aughts entry into the military, the 2005-set “The Inspection” follows young Ellis French, a young, gay, unhoused Black man struggling through life in New Jersey. Ellis has already decided his next step before we meet him, but as we enter into his orbit, he...

What happened to the tie dye guy? That's the question fans of Only Murders in the Building have been trying to figure out ever since season two debuted June 28 without a key cast member: Aaron Dominguez, who played Oscar Torres in season one of the Hulu comedy. Thankfully, an answer has surfaced, courtesy of show-runner John Hoffman, who co-created the show with Steve Martin. "I love Aaron," Hoffman told Deadline Aug. 23. "We made a call that we didn't want to see Mabel (Selena Gomez) develop a relationship where the trauma bond is strong." He went on to explain that he thought it'd be "really hard" for Oscar to stay at the Arconia after the death of Bunny,...

Another Only Murders in the Building mystery has just been solved.
When the Emmy-nominated comedy returned for Season 2, Mabel’s onetime love interest Oscar Torres (played in Season 1 by Aaron Dominguez) had seemingly vanished. It wasn’t until Episode 2 that Selena Gomez’s character referenced Oscar, telling Oliver that she and “Tie-Dye Guy” had decided to remain friends — and then he was never mentioned again.

"If I die in this uniform, I'm a hero… to somebody." A24 has revealed the first trailer for The Inspection, marking the narrative feature debut of filmmaker Elegance Bratton. This is already getting lots of good buzz and it hasn't even started showing yet. The film is premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, and it will also screen at the New York Film Festival this fall. Bratton's remarkable debut, a retelling of the filmmaker’s own life story, follows a man who joins the Marine Corps after being thrown out of his mother’s home at 16 for being gay. A24 is bringing a real-life story about a young man's fight for survival to the silver screen. Jeremy Pope, best known for starring in Netflix's "Hollywood" and FX's "Pose," stars in his first leading film role in "The Inspection," a gripping autobiographical tale that follows his character's emotional journey to join the Marine Corps after being thrown out by his mother (played by Gabrielle Union) for being gay, per the film's trailer, which released on Aug. 23.
According to A24, the Elegance Bratton-directed feature is inspired by the filmmaker's own life story. The film, which Bratton also wrote, will premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival, held Sept. 8–18, as well as at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 14 as a closing selection.

Quickly emerging as one of the most-anticipated fall festival premieres, Elegance Bratton’s narrative debut The Inspection has locked in coveted spots at both TIFF (Opening Night Film of its Discovery section) and NYFF (as Closing Night selection). Ahead of the premieres, and a fall release from A24, the first trailer has arrived for the film led by Jeremy Pope, Raúl Castillo, McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez with Bokeem Woodbine and Gabrielle Union.
Inspired by Bratton’s own life, the film follows a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, who decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. Weeks before its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, military drama film “The Inspection” has received a first trailer from A24. The distributor has also set a Nov. 18 theatrical release date.
“The Inspection” is the narrative debut for writer-director Elegance Bratton, who previously helmed the feature documentary “Pier Kids,” which followed homeless queer youth in New York, and the Vice docuseries “My House,” which followed competitive ballroom dancing.
Bratton pulled from his own experiences as a gay man in Marine Corps basic training during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era for “The Inspection.” The drama stars Jeremy Pope as Ellis French, a troubled man who enlists after being rejected by his mother (Gabrielle Union). While in training, Ellis receives brutal abuse from his training sergeant (Bokeem Woodbine) and develops an attraction to one of his superiors (Raúl Castillo). The film’s cast also includes McCaul Lombardi and Aaron Dominguez.

When Emmy nominations were announced a few weeks ago, it was wonderful to see “Only Murders in the Building” nab three: one for Outstanding Comedy Series and two for its lead actors. Yes, actors. Don’t get me wrong, Martin Short and Steve Martin do fantastic work in the Hulu series’ debut season, but to not nominate the lone woman in the trinity, Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, is weird. Part of what made Season 1 work was Mabel’s millennial cynicism in the face of Oliver’s (Martin Short) chronic wanderlust and Charles’ (Steve Martin) desire to be left alone. Mabel balanced everyone out.
Regardless of awards, Gomez brought Mabel into a new world with Season 2. Mabel doesn’t really know who she is and that derisive armor is starting to crack. Gomez still plays the character as tough and perceptive, but Mabel’s also still grieving a lot of the demons in her life,...

Jane Lynch is looking to pick up her sixth career Emmy Award this year. She’s gunning to do it in the Best Comedy Guest Actress category for her performance as Sazz Pataki, Charles’s (Steve Martin) old stunt double, on the first season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Her submission is the penultimate episode of the first season, “Double Time.” In the midst of caring for Jan (Amy Ryan) after her stabbing, Charles learns that Sazz is stopping by to visit during the annual stunt convention. Sazz then shows up dressed exactly like Charles and, much to Jan’s shock, is a woman. As she takes a call from her agent (disclosing that she’ll be doubling for Tilda Swinton), Charles reveals that Sazz would also double for him in sex scenes, that everyone loved her more than him and that his ex-girlfriend had left him for her.

One of last season’s best episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” was “The Boy From 6B.” Said boy was Theo Dimas (James Caverly), the Deaf son of podcast sponsor and dip entrepreneur Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane). Theo moved through the bustling world of New York not only as a deaf man, but a man with a secret. Told like a silent movie, “The Boy From 6B” was heartfelt and incredibly authentic, especially if one is a Deaf or disabled person living with parents who aren’t. Teddy and Theo’s relationship is fraught, both with their own personal demons, but also an unspoken fear of disappointing the other.
We haven’t seen the Dimases much in Season 2 but this week’s episode “Flipping the Pieces” brings Theo Dimas back to the fold, pairing him up with Mabel (Selena Gomez) as everyone continues to look for Bunny’s killer.

Editor’s Note: This article will discuss spoilers for the first six episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2.
The arrival of “Only Murders in the Building” Episode 6 brings us over halfway through the season. And while there are three more episodes to make an argument for a killer, odds are you have your theories. Like last season, some characters seem like obvious red herrings (Alice?). Maybe it’s a character we’ve known for years, like cat-lover Howard Morris. It can’t be Amy Schumer playing herself, could it?
Let’s look back at the season so far and see where we stand on who killed Arconia owner Bunny Folger.
1. Alice

JoAnne Yarrow was deep into work when she found out that she had received an Emmy nomination — her first — for editing “Only Murders in the Building.” “All of the sudden I started getting a bunch of text messages and I was sort of silent. And I turned my phone to my coworker and she read them,” Yarrow recalled to Gold Derby (watch above). “She was the one that was expressive and screaming and I was just kind of in shock. So that’s how I found out and then she screamed, ‘Call your husband!’ Later, there was somebody down the hall that was like, ‘What happened? You had to call your husband about something.'”

The debut season of Hulu’s murder mystery series “Only Murders in the Building” certainly had a stacked cast. Its main trio alone consisted of Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, after all. But it also had its share of guest stars, including Tina Fey, playing podcaster Cinda Canning, not to mention Sting portraying…himself. If you’ve been working through the new season you might have noticed that a lot of other stars wanted to play in the “Only Murders” Arconia sandbox this time around. Good for them, but a problem for viewers.
A few episodes into S2 it seems plot may have fallen by the wayside. Though the death of Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) was how Season 1 ended there doesn’t seem to be as tight a mystery here as in Season 1. Oliver (Short), Charles (Martin), and Mabel (Gomez) feel like three disparate characters on separate adventures instead of a team.

Mabel, Charles, and Oliver are back with fireworks!
On Only Murders In The Building Season 2 Episode 1, we are finally treated to the continuation of Season 1's shocking cliffhanger, which saw Bunny's brutal murder, seemingly at Mabel's hands.
The truth, of course, proves to be much more complicated and will likely prove to be a puzzle of many pieces.

This recap of Only Murders in the Building contains spoilers for season 1.
One of the more eclectic concepts to come out last fall was Hulu’s engrossing and enjoyable Only Murders in the Building. Perhaps it shouldn’t have come as a complete surprise, as the show starred bastions of comedy Steve Martin and Martin Short, and most of what they have done (especially together) is pure gold. Giving this duo a third corner of comedy is Selena Gomez, who injects the main cast with youth and millennial-appropriate sarcasm.
With the first season’s deadly enigma being solved, the three amateur sleuths didn’t get much time to celebrate, as a second hurried and horrific homicide happened within mere moments. Before they start recording the second season of their podcast and solve a second crime, let’s give you a refresher about all the twists and turns of season 1.

“Only Murders in the Building” Season 2 is imminent, just shy of a year since the first season arrived. Taking note of the trend of true crime podcasts and the audience that consumes them, the Hulu show follows a trio of New Yorkers as they attempt to solve a murder mystery in their apartment building.
Starring Selena Gomez as Mabel, Steve Martin as Charles Haden-Savatge and Martin Short as Oliver Putnam, “Only Murders in the Building” combined thrilling suspense with moments of comic relief in its first season. The three Arconia residents bonded over Cinda Canning’s (Tina Fey) work on true crime podcasting, taking it one step further to investigate the murder of their neighbor Tim Kono.
But given that cliffhanger ending, here’s a recap of what happened in Season 1 before Season 2 debuts on June 28.

Last August Hulu released the first season of “Only Murders in the Building,” a whodunit that blended old-school detective storytelling with fresh characters expertly played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The first season had a lot to recommend. The camaraderie between the trio of leads was infectious, with each individualizing themselves so well that viewers could be a Mab-iac or a Putnut depending on which character one loved the most. One of the leading Emmy contenders this year is Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which could be one of the most nominated comedy series in the field. In addition, the comedy series, which will drop its second season in the middle of Emmy nom voting, could make history for two of its guest actor comedy submissions — Nathan Lane and James Caverly.
Lane could become the most nominated actor in the history of the guest actor comedy category (beginning in 1975), while Caverly will be the first deaf actor ever recognized.
A likely frontrunner for writing and directing, particularly for “The Boy From 6B,” the critically acclaimed seventh episode of the inaugural season, will be a focused highlight that Hulu will put forth with the TV Academy.
