As the writers strike continues to dominate Hollywood discourse, Ted Sarandos has exited a planned appearance at a Pen America event next week that was set to honor him.
The literary organization announced Wednesday that the Netflix co-ceo will no longer attend their annual gala to accept the Pen America Business Visionary Award. The event will still take place May 18 in New York as planned with Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost as host, and Lorne Michaels remains scheduled to participate as an honored guest.
“We admire Ted Sarandos’ singular work translating literature to artful presentation onscreen, and his stalwart defense of free expression and satire,” Pen America said in a statement. “As a writers organization, we have been following recent events closely and understand his decision.”

How Tamara Lawrance Found Her Voice In ‘The Silent Twins’ & Hot Crime Noir Series ‘Get Millie Black’
Exclusive: Silence has been golden for Tamara Lawrance who, paired with Wakanda Forever’s Letitia Wright in The Silent Twins, won the best joint lead performance trophy at the recent BIFA awards.
In director Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s picture they portray inseparable twins, Jennifer and June Gibbons, born to Barbadian parents in 1963. They made an unusual pact at an early age to remain speechless except for communicating with each other in an indecipherable dialect of their own design.
It’s a contrast to a TV drama Lawrance will star in next year, in which she plays a character with more than enough to say. She’s referring to the title role in Channel 4 and HBO’s six-part prestige series Get Millie Black, a crime noir thriller set in Kingston, Jamaica and the UK, created by writer Marlon James whose novel A Brief History of Seven Killings won him the 2015 Man Booker prize.

There’s a twist here: Deadline reported that Anonymous was in talks for Grandview/Automatik. But The Dish hears that Grandview won’t be part of the transaction and will remain a freestanding rep company.
Deal will close early next year, sources said. The separation of Grandview and Automatik is amicable, we’re told. In fact, they just had a rather pleasant holiday party.
Anonymous, run by CEO Dawn Olmstead, had been having conversations with the twinned entities since last spring. Details will emerge after the holidays, and Anonymous Content, Automatik and Grandview declined comment.
Grandview will continue as a separate entity. Company has 20 managers who work with more than 500 clients including Joe Kosinski, Ryan Condal, Justin Simien, Dan Trachtenberg, Hiro Murai, Molly Smith Metzler,...

Marking another major merger in the representation world, sources tell Deadline that Anonymous Content is in exclusive negotiations to acquire management and production firm Grandview/Automatik. The two companies have had discussions about a potential merger going all the way back to the spring, with nothing serious ever coming of it, but talks have ramped up during the past couple weeks and sources close to the situation say they now are exclusive.

Netflix continues its push into the African continent — a still relatively untapped source of talent and content — with its latest originals order, which is also its first original African animated series, “Mama K’s Team 4,” produced by Cape Town, South Africa-based Triggerfish Animation Studios and London-based kids’ entertainment house Cake.

Exclusive: Warner Bros will re-develop Methusaleh as a star vehicle for Michael B. Jordan to play a man who has managed to stay alive for over 400 years. Jordan’s Outlier Society has joined as producers Heyday’s David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford.
Warner Bros has been trying to get this one up and running for years, with myriad writers and leading men that at one time included Tom Cruise. It’s got a Highlander-like mythology and franchise potential. The idea is for Jordan to play a man who has managed to survive for hundreds of years, without showing the physical signs of age. In that time, he has accumulated vast intellectual knowledge, from multiple languages to the sciences, as well as survival skills. Zach Dean is among the writers who’ve written versions.

Black Leopard, Red Wolf is an African fantasy epic written by Marlon James.
Black Leopard, Red Wolf was only just released on Tuesday, but is already making some serious waves in the literary world... and, apparently, in Hollywood, too. THR just reported that Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society has snatched up the rights to adapt the epic African fantasy, alongside Warner Bros.
In Black Leopard, Red Wolf, Marlon James (who previously won the Man Booker Prize for A Brief History of Seven Killings) tells the story of Tracker, who is hired by a slave trader alongside several other mercenaries to find a boy. Set in a fantastical Africa, the novel features giants, necromancers, witches and shape-shifters, and has drawn comparisons to Game of Thrones.
Here's the full official synopsis via Amazon:

It seems we’re not the only ones quite taken with Marlon James’ absorbing new novel Black Leopard, Red Wolf: Like many an epic tale before it, the book is being adapted into a movie. If you’ve read even the initial opening section of the story, then you already know this is going to be no small feat to pull off.

In the first acquisition since announcing their first-look deal, Warner Bros and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society have acquired films rights to Marlon James’ new fantasy epic novel Black Leopard, Red Wolf.
Based in African mythology, Black Leopard, Red Wolf follows Tracker, who has a keen sense of smell. He’s hired to find a missing child against a backdrop of competing kingdoms and violent political upheaval. The story touts a wild cast of characters including a witch, a shape-shifting leopard, a murderous hyena, and conjoined twins. It’s the first book in James’ Dark Star Trilogy where African myth, fantasy and history come together.
James will remain an Ep on the project. Anonymous Content and Ellen Levine of Trident Media Group brokered the deal. The Riverhead Books novel hit shelves Tuesday.
James is the Booker Prize-winning and New York Times-bestselling author of A Brief History of Seven Killings.

Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and Warner Bros. have nabbed the film rights to “Black Leopard, Red Wolf,” a buzzy new fantasy novel by Marlon James.
“Black Leopard, Red Wolf” draws on African mythology to tell the story of Tracker, whose acute sense of smell leads him to be hired to find a missing child against a backdrop of warring kingdoms and political chaos. The child he seeks may be the heir to an empire, something that complicates matters. James referred to the often bloody epic as an “African ‘Game of Thrones,’” but later said he was joking. Still, it includes plenty of the elements that made that HBO show a water-cooler phenomenon including witches, a shape-shifting leopard, a killer hyena, and conjoined twins.
The book is the initial entry in James’ planned Dark Star Trilogy. James, best known for writing the best-seller “A Brief History of Seven Killings,...

On the heels of one of last year’s most entertaining films, Logan Lucky, Steven Soderbergh is gearing up for a big 2018. Not only is his HBO show Mosaic premiering in condensed form (though now available on a special app), he’ll also have his R-rated iPhone-shot feature Unsane debuting in March and he’s producing Ocean’s 8. Before those, however, we can enter part of his mind from last year as he’s once again provided his viewing log of everything he read and watched throughout the entire year.
Along with many cuts of Logan Lucky, Unsane, and Ocean’s 8, he was an avid Twin Peaks watcher, as well as a wealth of classics from Bresson, Resnais, Kubrick, Hitchcock, and more more. Check out the full log below via his site Extension765, as well as a new teaser for his latest show.

January brings such touchstones as the Golden Globes and the Oscar nominations announcement, but it’s also been home for the last several years to the release of Steven Soderbergh’s master list of everything he consumed the previous year. The director has released his 2017 list of all the films, TV shows, plays, and books he watched and read, and it’s full of reliable and unexpected choices that prove Soderbergh’s taste has no boundaries.

Soderbergh posted the full 2017 list on his Extension 765 blog, and it appears his year started with a very surprising choice: “Passengers,” the maligned science fiction romance starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The director decided to end his year like many of us did: Bingeing the six new episodes of “Black Mirror” on Netflix.
Of course Soderbergh kept up with this year’s awards contenders as well.

Mel Gibson’s new film “Hacksaw Ridge” will hit theaters this November, but Gibson might be forever tied to his 2004 violent religious epic “The Passion of the Christ.” The film provoked much controversy due to its extreme violence and allegations of anti-semitism, and people are still responding to the film, including actor Brad Pitt.
For the New York Times Style Magazine, Man Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James sat down with actor Brad Pitt and published his musings entitled “Five or Six Things I Didn’t Know About Brad Pitt.” In the interview, Pitt mentions that he’d like to make a film about Pontius Pilate and says that the film “won’t be for the ‘Passion’ crowd.” When James mentions that “The Passion of the Christ” drove him out of the church, Pitt laughs and responds, “I felt like I was just watching an L. Brad Pitt covers the New York Times Magazine in which he wears as assortment of Giogio Armani gear and talks to Man Booker prize winning author Marlon James about Brexit, Trump and Mel Gibson. And of course gives great face while doing it.
As far as magazine celebrity profiles go, this is a very innocuous one. Pitt comes in as a nice and affable guy, but doesn't really offer any interesting tidbits. Except for what he says about Mel Gibson. In the course of discussing a potential film he wants to make about Pontius Pilate, he says that his movie "certainly won’t be for the ‘Passion’ crowd". Then for good measure, adds about Gibson's box office juggernaut:
“I felt like I was just watching an L. Ron Hubbard propaganda film.”
Brad Pitt, nice guy, movie star, expert at throwing shade.

How do you follow up a novel like A Brief History of Seven Killings, the Booker Prize–winning exploration of political and criminal violence in the Jamaican diaspora? If you're Marlon James, you head straight to the fantasy aisle: The author tells Man of the World magazine he's going to "geek the fuck out" and create his own fantasy series, kicking off with a book called Black Leopard, Red Wolf, which he describes as "an African Game of Thrones." As James puts it, "I realized how sick and tired I was of arguing about whether there should be a black hobbit in Lord of the Rings. African folklore is just as rich, and just as perverse as that shit. We have witches, we have demons, we have goblins, and mad kings. We have stories of royal succession that would put Wolf Hall to shame. We beat the Tudors two times over.

Jamaican author Marlon James has won the 2015 Man Booker Prize for his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings. In the words of judges' chair Michael Wood, James's sprawling novel was simply the "most exciting" book on this year's Booker short list. Taking inspiration from a 1976 assassination attempt on Bob Marley, Seven Killings weaves an polyphonic narrative out of the political violence of '70s Jamaica and the drug empires of '80s New York. As that description hints, its nearly 700 pages are full of unspeakable violence; as James told one interviewer, "I didn’t want to fall into a pornography of violence but I think violence should be violent. I find the violence in PG13 movies unbearable ... you have to explore the consequences."...
