“Everybody’s raising this Rashomon thing, but I feel that it’s fundamentally different from Rashomon, because in Rashomon, each character, when they go back through the story again, they actually end up being a different character within the film, within the story, whatever specific story it is,” Hirokazu Kore-eda told us last fall regarding Monster. “Whereas with this, the people don’t change, but the monster who appears, appears in different places.

Camila José Donoso (“Naomi Campbel”) is gearing up to shoot her fourth pic, “Antitropical,” with Roberto Doveris’ Niña Niño Films producing. The docu-fiction hybrid will be filmed much like a documentary over various months, starting late October, that will stretch into the next year. It’s also received some additional support from Chile’s Audiovisual Production Fund.
At the 18th Santiago Int’l Film Festival (Sanfic), Niña Niño Films is screening docu “Me gustaría que vivieras mi juventud de nuevo” (“I’d Like You to Live My Youth Again”), Nicolás Guzmán’s third film, co-produced with Francisca Soto and renowned filmmaker Alicia Scherson (“Il Futuro”).
As in her previous films, Donoso plays on the limits between fiction and documentary. “It is a project that I began to develop when I was researching the world of café brothels [dubbed cafes con pierna in Chile] for my first film, almost 10 years ago,” said Donoso. “There I met two...

Camila José Donoso’s fiction-fact hybrid, “Nona. If They Soak Me, I’ll Burn Them” vies for the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Int’l Film Festival (Iffr), bearing the distinction of being among two Chilean films out of five pics awarded development funding by Korea’s Jeonju Cinema Project (Jcp) last year. Alejandro Fernandez Almendras’ black and white drama, “The Play” (“Hra”), shot in the Czech Republic, is the second awardee.
Featuring her own eccentric grandmother and mother, “Nona” is Donoso’s most personal project to date. While it is inspired by events, it is comprised of mainly fictional elements. Shot in a diversity of formats including low-resolution video images, home videos and digital images, “Nona” follows a 66-year old retiree whose neighbors in the Chilean coastal town of Pichilemu are driven from their homes after a series of mysterious forest fires erupt not long after she settles there.

Camila José Donoso's Casa Roshell (2017), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from June 15 - July 15, 2018 as a Special Discovery.Mexico’s “Fiestas Patrias” (Patriotic Holidays) were in full swing when I walked into the club Roshell for the first time. I got to this private transvestites club through a friend's invitation. When I met Roshell Terranova and Liliana Alba, as well as Paula Delicia and Lía García, I felt captured by them. And as if they were a magnet, I felt that place was a sort of limbo. Time had a different pace in the club, its own rhythm, and everything seemed to belong to a different time: the generational mix of people and the music, the dark room, the melodramatic tone of the seduction games, so Mexican and so indebted to the language of soap operas, the love dramas, the questions about...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Camila José Donoso's Casa Roshell (2017), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from June 15 - July 15, 2018 as a Special Discovery.Camila José Donoso’s Casa Roshell begins backstage. An early scene shows one of the titular club’s guests dressing up as a woman. Donoso carefully aligns camera with changing-room mirror so that their profile is only visible through a reflection. We witness the covering up of stubble and and the fastening of corsets, with the focus not on the drag illusion but the moment of self-discovery. It is a prolonged scene and the lack of performance and glamour typically associated with drag culture is perhaps alienating; however, the demand for patience and respect from the viewer that the mirrored—and thus queered—frame makes is profoundly subversive, proving Donoso a low-key revolutionary.

UntitledIt’s not common that you find yourself having a moment of sudden comprehension and even illumination, almost like finding an inner peace: a sense of quiet and tranquil meditation that allows you to qualm your more restless moments regarding the value and importance of the things that you hold dear. In this case, I’m talking about cinema, and in particular, documentary cinema, the kind of which has always been the sole focus of the Art of the Real festival since 2014, and this year’s edition (April 20th - May 2nd) with over 25 screenings that combine short and feature length non-fiction films at New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center.Along with new films from established directors like Jem Cohen and Michael Glawogger, this year features spotlights on Chinese documentary cinema, Latin American documentary hybrids (with a particular spot for Chilean cinema), the late Brazilian master director Andrea Tonacci...

“In our fourth year we’ve put an emphasis on placing works by first-time and emerging filmmakers alongside established names, with the aim to highlight the experimentation happening across generations, and to trace a new trajectory of documentary art that points to its promising future,” said Film Society of Lincoln Center Programmer at Large Rachael Rakes, who organized the festival with Director of Programming Dennis Lim.

In one of the more unusual crowdfunding videos I've seen, Josefina Ramirez talks about her method of choosing roles: "I don't have to read scripts ... Just tell me the theme, and from that I make my own deductions." Now, granted, Ms. Ramirez is, apparently, the grandmother of filmmaker Camila José Donoso, and has only one film appearance listed in IMDb -- namely, her granddaughter's directorial debut, Naomi Campbel -- but still, her boldness is much appreciated, and made me more curious about the project, which I first heard about from a tipster who emailed us about it. From the official synopsis (word substitutions mine): Nona (66) lives self-exiled in a forest where strange fires happen. The police investigate and the neighbors speculate. The houses...
