Hold your breath for some bad news if you’re a local. A new report shows residents living in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area are breathing the unhealthiest air in the country.
The American Lung Association’s latest State of the Air report details the top five U.S. cities polluted by ground-level ozone air pollution, or smog. Four are located in Southern and Central California, with Los Angeles leading. The others, in order, are Visalia, California, Bakersfield, California, and Fresno-Madera-Hanford, California. The outlier is the Phoenix-Mesa metro area in Arizona.
The five cities with the cleanest air include Honolulu, Hawaii, Johnson City, Tennessee, Lincoln, Nebraska, Bangor, Maine, and Wilmington, North Carolina.
Dr. Sarah Rees with South Coast Air Quality Management District said several factors contributing to ozone pollution come from human influences.

Exclusive: Stephen Fry has signed on to narrate Kayleigh-Paige Rees’ Ukraine war feature documentary We Are Home, which is about families and children displaced due to the ongoing war.
The feature-length film, from Sanditon actor and producer Rees’ Raspberry Films, was shot entirely in Skole, Ukraine. Anton Chystiakov is the director.
It looks at how the war in Ukraine has led many children to leave their hometowns due to the fear of Russian attacks and destruction, while shining a light on their resourcefulness. Stories from several children from different parts of the country chart their fears, losses and new challenges, while reminding viewers of the power of the human spirit.
Broadcaster, comedian and actor Fry, whose storied career has included roles in Blackadder, Gosford Park and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows among others, provides the narration.
“I am honestly speechless and beyond honoured that Stephen said yes to narrating our documentary,...

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...

Last month, we unveiled the trailer for writer/director Craig Rees’ film Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, which puts a horror thriller twist on a classic children’s story. (You can watch that trailer in the embed above.) While we’re still waiting to hear when the film is going to make its way out into the world, Rees has provided The Daily Star with some interesting information, revealing that Goldilocks is going to feature some “pretty graphic” violence, including head crushing and eyeball damage!
Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge has a short and simple synopsis: Never enter into someone’s house without permission.
But most of us already know the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. A young girl called Goldilocks wanders into a house in the woods, helps herself to some porridge, sits in the chairs, tries out the beds. Then...

The premise of Michael Rees’ latest comedy short Middle Sized Things is so delightfully off-kilter that it needs to be seen to be fully grasped. It follows a guest speaker at college who’s presenting his core thesis, the notion that the properties of scale have no direct correlation with something’s moral status. It’s a conceptual idea that makes no sense whatsoever but Rees uses the confidence and determination of his cocksure academic to expose the fragile ego underneath which, combined with an ensemble cast who sell the ridiculousness of the situation wonderfully, makes the short a must-see. With Middle Sized Things having arrived online, Dn joined Rees for a conversation about his creative process as a comedy writer/director, his aversion to sitting on ideas for too long, and the benefits his experience as an editor brings to his filmmaking.

Montreal’s Frontières, the industry arm of Canada’s Fantasia Film Festival, has announced its winners.
In the official selection, “Freya” proved unbeatable, taking home the Post-Production Award by PurpleDOG Post worth Cad$10,000. The same award – and Cad$5,000 – was also given to Forum’s “In the Heart of the South” and Genre Film Lab’s “Alligator.”
The Pitch Deck Award, offered by The Film Deck, went to “Animal Realm,” presented in the Shorts to Features section.
“We are extremely grateful to PurpleDOG Post and The Film Deck for supporting us with the awards this year. Our plan is to continue doing it and hopefully grow, by partnering up with the companies that can support filmmakers in their production process,” Annick Mahnert, Frontières executive director, told Variety.
“Each of these projects has a specific identity and they are all extremely original. I know they didn’t have an easy job selecting the awardees.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.
