Suzy Eddie Izzard and Ed Speleers (Downton Abbey) are among the actors who have joined the supporting cast of Midas Man, the feature biopic of Beatles Manager Brian Epstein.
In the pic, Izzard portrays British music promoter Allan Williams, famously known as “The Man Who Gave Away The Beatles,” while Ed Speleers is Tex Ellington, Epstein’s love interest. Other additions include Darci Shaw (The Colour Room), who plays singer Cilla Black, and Milo Parker (Mr. Holmes) is Epstein’s longtime assistant, Alastair Taylor.
Previous cast attached to the project included actors Lukas Gage, Bill Milner, and Rosie Day. We understand the changes were due to scheduling issues because of delays to production following multiple creative changes to the pic. Last week, we reported that UK director Joe Stephenson (Doctor Jekyll) quietly took the reins earlier this year from previous filmmaker Sara Sugarman (Vinyl), who left after what sources described...

To mark the release of The Durrells Series 4 on 20th May, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
Based on conservationist and author Gerard Durrell’s trilogy of books about his family’s time in Corfu during the 1930s, the fourth series once again follows the lives of this eccentric family as they strive to fit into Greek culture.
Series four sees Louisa fight off heartbreak by opening the doors of the family villa as a guest house. Larry struggles to get his risqué Black Book published and enjoys romance with two ballet dancers, while Leslie’s upsetting everyone with his hunting skills. Animal-mad Gerry now has ambitions to open his own zoo, and Margo’s latest venture sees her start her own beauty salon.

Joe Stephenson’s documentary charts the theatrical knight’s route from classical stage roles to starring in The Lord of the Rings
In an outtake over the credits, Ian McKellen jokes that this documentary about his life, career and Lgbt activism is a bit of an obituary. As it happens he’s already sorted out his funeral. “Well,” he says, with a waggle of one of those owlish eyebrows, “I had an evening to spare … the most enjoyable evening.”
I can’t think of anyone I’d rather spend 90 minutes listening to than the subject of Joe Stephenson’s film. The format is simple: an audience with Sir Ian beefed up by archive footage and dramatised scenes of his childhood (beautifully acted by 15-year-old Milo Parker). McKellen occasionally slips into the part of twinkly super-cool gay uncle that he tends to play in interviews these days. But mostly he’s thoughtful and self-reflective.

Another day, another notable precursor announces…one among many, in fact. Earlier today, the Broadcast Film Critics Association (or the Bfca) announced the nominations for their 21st Annual Critics Choice Awards. Though not a guild or anything of that sort, the Bfca’s awards function sort of like a poor man’s Golden Globes, helping to build buzz/test out winners as much as anything else. Whenever an award has their winners announced on television as part of a show, with speeches and the like, it can help when appealing to Oscar. So, while the Academy might not pay too close attention to the Critics Choice Awards when they announce their nominations (as opposed to their winners), they don’t completely ignore them either, that’s for sure… Leading the way here was Mad Max: Fury Road with a big haul 13 nominations, followed by Carol, The Martian, and The Revenant with nine nods each.

Now we're talking! Forget the Golden Globe Awards and its category randomness. ("The Martian" is a musical or comedy? Ok then.) The 21st annual Critics' Choice Awards nominations were just revealed -- including both TV and film categories -- and they added a lot of new players to the game. Some welcome players, too. (Nice to see you, "The Leftovers" and "UnREAL.") And maybe some not-so welcome players. (Tom Hardy gets an action star nod for "Mad Max: Fury Road"? He was barely in it.)
The winners will be named January 17 and the ceremony will air live on A&E, hosted by T.J. Miller.

Last year I began a tradition to help my fellow Bfca members choose more wisely when it comes to the "Young Performer" category by sharing an eligibility list. My belief is they often choose poorly because this category gets no pre-voting discussion whatsoever and it can be difficult to even think of who is eligible. That said, you can safely expect to see Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) nominated because they have leading roles in films that have been discussed. But who else should or could be nominated?
Ballots go out to the Bfca at any moment so here's a cheat sheet to help them vote. The category is Under 21... (but it should obviously be adjusted to 17 and under. Remember that year when the winner came from the sexually explicit Blue is the Warmest Color? That's what you get when you have a category with...

This one's a keeper, a film that generates a meaningful emotional charge. Ian McKellen and director Bill Condon re-team for an intensely felt portrait of Sherlock Holmes in his sunset years, holding on to his intellectual capacities as he reappraises a tragic case from years before. Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement.

Sir Ian McKellen just accepted the Mill Valley Film Festival's Life Achievement Award, among others coming his way these days. He's been getting kudos for his role as "Mr. Holmes," which Miramax/Roadside Attractions has turned into a sleeper specialty summer hit ($17.7-million). This could mark his third Oscar nomination after James Whale in "Gods and Monsters" and Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." Reuniting with his "Gods and Monsters" director Bill Condon, McKellen plays a geriatric Holmes who is trying to hang on to shards of his memory of a pivotal case. The movie cuts back and forth between his writing down that earlier mystery and his daily life in the bucolic English countryside with a housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her engaging young son (Milo Parker). The movie is produced by Anne Carey, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman from a screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher...

Milo Parker plays a pre-teen assistant to a paranormal investigator in this underpowered supernatural comedy
That this cheap-und-cheerful, German-derived kids’ flick has been rescued from the vast EU fodder mountain is presumably down to the presence of Milo Parker, the expressive young lead of June’s Mr Holmes – though he gets flimsier material here, playing a pre-teen helping a cynical paranormal investigator (Ange Engelke) to reverse a phantom cold snap.
The sub-Casper runaround that ensues could enthral only impressionable seven-year-olds, although jellybean-verdant spook Hugo might pique the interest of Harold Ramis-savvy copyright lawyers, and lameness detectors will ping steadily throughout. “My iPod!” yelps Parker, after Hugo has doused him in ectoplasm. “More like a slimepod, I’d say,” winks the ghost. At least it’s not in 3D.

People often feel the need to retell stories, usually putting their own spin into it to make the story better suited to either their own tastes or to answer the great question, “what if?” We see it in countless books and every reboot of every franchise that gets greenlighted into a new project. Some of them are worthy additions, some of them aren’t. This summer has seen two remakes hit the big screen, “Mr. Holmes” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”
“Mr. Holmes” stars Ian McKellen as an eighty-three year old Sherlock. His mind is failing him. He misplaces things, he drifts during conversation, and he has trouble remembering large chunks of his cases. As he struggles to remember his last case, which he knows was not resolved as neatly as Mr. Watson would have the public believe, he is also forced to confront his own frailty.

Rising young star Milo Parker is set to star as 11 year old Gerald Durrell alongside Keeley Hawes and Leslie Carron in a brand new ITV series The Durrells, based upon naturalist Gerald Durrell’s classic trilogy of Corfu memoirs including the much loved ‘My Family and Other Animals’.
Milo Parker (represented by Bwh) has just wrapped on Tim Burton's latest feature Peregrine's Home for Peculiars, and starred as Roger opposite Sir Ian McKellan in Mr Holmes. Milo was also seen as Conner in sci-fi action adventure Robot Overlords. In The Durrells he plays young Gerry who is obsessed with animals and about to be thrown out of school. Happy to spend hours staring at beetles on a wall, he can go missing for days on epic nature trails and turns the house in Corfu into a zoo.
The story focuses upon Louisa Durrell, played by Keeley Hawes, whose life is in meltdown.

What a pleasure it is to be in the presence of Ian McKellen, who dominates the screen in Mr. Holmes. That’s Sherlock Holmes, for the record, a lion in winter as imagined by Mitch Cullin in his novel A Slight Trick of the Mind. It portrays the celebrated detective as a 93-year-old recluse in the year 1947. He lives a quiet life in the country, tending honeybees, irritating his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and befriending her bright and curious son (Milo Parker), who dotes on Mr. Holmes and becomes his aide and confidante. It’s fascinating to see how Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective continues to inspire authors, screenwriters, and filmmakers after all these years. I’m...

Elegantly executed through sincere emotions, graceful maturity and tremendously striking performances, Mr. Holmes is a wonderful return-to-form for director Bill Condon. Following a series of disappointing efforts like the muddled The Fifth Estate and exasperating The Twilight Series: Breaking Dawn movies, the filmmaker channels what made him such a haunting force, further humanizing Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary fictional figure and quaintly extenuating his character's story with tons of heart, wit and poise. Based on Mitch Cullin's 2005 novel "A Slight Trick of the Mind", this iteration of Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) finds the notorious detective in 1947, 93-years-old and living under the exaggerated shadow created by his late partner Watson's pen. With a failing mind and continuously haunted by the one mystery he couldn't solve, the retired celebrity returns from Hiroshima, Japan to once again live under the care of his housekeeper Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney) and her young son...

Chicago – Sherlock Holmes is the most famous fictional detective in literary history, and his character adaptation into movies, TV and other media shows no sign of slowing down. But what if Holmes were real, and lived as an old man past World War II? This scenario is explored in “Mr. Holmes.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This story is adapted from a novel by Mitch Cullin (“A Slight Trick of the Mind”), one of the many writers over the years that have extended the Holmes legacy of the detective’s creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes’ power of deduction, reasoning and extensive knowledge has fascinated several generations of readers, movie goers and Benedict Cumberbatch fans (he plays Holmes on the popular BBC-tv modern adaptation). “Mr. Holmes” has all of the joy and mystery of the character, portrayed as a 93-year-old by Sir Ian McKellen. The film ponders end-of-lifetime issues, including morality, self-worth and even loneliness for the detective,...

Mr. Holmes
Written for the screen by Jeffrey Hatcher
Directed by Bill Condon
UK, 2015
Sherlock Holmes is a character so ingrained in our cultural imagination that it’s hard to think up any new spin on him. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle invented a character who became an archetype, even for procedural television, as the airwaves are still littered with brilliant assholes who owe their very existence to the original detective of 221B Baker Street.
Mr. Holmes, the latest depiction of Holmes, directed by Bill Condon and based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, manages to find new ground by emphasizing the character’s vulnerability and, thus, his humanity. Ian McKellen plays an aged Holmes past his mental prime, struggling against encroaching senility to remember the conclusion to his final mystery. The enigmatic case unfolds only as quickly as Holmes can remember it, which is to say,...

Lets add another entry to the long, long list of feature films concerning the fictional character that’s been in more movies than any other (perhaps this new one will put him past Dracula, or at least in a tie with the Count). Just who is it? To evoke the old cliché, it’s elementary, film fans, for it’s none other than “the world’s greatest detective”, Sherlock Holmes. Most recently director Guy Ritchie cast Robert Downey, Jr. in two big screen blockbusters set at the start of the 20th century (while Sherlock jumped to the modern-day for TV shows on CBS and the BBC). This new film is also set in the 20th century, but our sleuth is not the bare-chested, bare-knuckle brawler from the Ritchie flicks. No, this is set in the middle of said century, with our hero well, well past normal retirement age. Sir Ian McKellen,...

Unsolved Mysteries: Condon Recreates the Last Days of Sherlock Holmes
Director Bill Condon reunites with elements from several of his most critically acclaimed titles for his latest work, Mr. Holmes, those being actors Ian McKellan and Laura Linney, performers both bestowed with Academy Award nominations for their work with Condon. A late staged episode in the life of one of literature’s most famed detectives, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, the film is adapted from Mitch Cullin’s novel, A Slight Trick of the Mind. More so an exploration of reconciliation than an actual mystery thriller, the title bears striking resemblance to Condon’s most notable work, 1998’s Gods & Monsters, in which McKellan played Frankenstein director James Whale towards the end of his existence, cared for by an elderly maid. This core dynamic plays out in similar fashion, though to less dramatic and detrimental effect. Melancholy and gently morose,...

Mr. Holmes is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.
Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.

The game is afoot in Bill Condon’s Mr. Holmes, and it’s a game as tired and apocryphal as such a phrase being credited to Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle had no more control of the phrases and details his most famous creation would appropriate than he did the maddening popularity of the character. Like the great detective himself, any studied follower of the Holmes short stories and novels can separate the facts from the hearsay. Mr. Holmes has some fun as a mini-exegesis on what does and doesn’t belong in the Holmes canon, but makes for an otherwise humdrum addition to that canon on its own terms.
After two rounds with the teenage offspring of cinema’s most popular character, Condon’s interpretation of another silver screen regular has an intriguing setup. Adapted from Mitch Cullin’s “A Slight Trick of the Mind,” Mr. Holmes tells the...

Ian McKellen brings affection and grace to a whimsical portrait of an elderly Sherlock Holmes, struggling with his memory and his myth
Is there a version of Sherlock Holmes we haven’t seen? Screen incarnations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated character date back to the birth of cinema (the tricksy short Sherlock Holmes Baffled was made at the turn of the century), and Conan Doyle himself praised actor Eille Norwood’s “wonderful impersonation of Holmes” in shorts and features from the early 1920s. John Barrymore, Raymond Massey and Clive Brook all played the detective before The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) established Basil Rathbone as the iconic bearer of the deerstalker and pipe combo. More recently we’ve had Robert Downey Jr as a pugilist detective in Guy Ritchie’s punchy reboots, and Benedict Cumberbatch as a thoroughly modern Sherlock in the hit BBC TV series.
Now comes Sir Ian McKellen,...

Bill Condon chats to us about Sir Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Beauty & The Beast, and Mr Holmes...
We caught up with director Bill Condon recently to chat about his new film Mr Holmes, a fictional biopic of the famous Baker Street sleuth played by Sir Ian McKellen. Condon has a vast and wide-ranging career in the movies with titles like the outstanding Gods & Monsters and Kinsey sitting beside showstoppers like Dreamgirls and The Twilight Saga.
Despite suffering from a bout of hay fever (your author was suffering too, dear reader), Bill was warm and friendly, and we bonded over our mutual love for the Disney animated film Beauty And The Beast (which he is currently directing a live action remake of).
How did Mr Holmes come about? Was this a project that you were keen to do?
Actually, Anne Carey, the producer, came to me with the script, based on...

Ian McKellen plays a retired Sherlock Holmes, in Bill Condon’s sensitive film about ageing, death, fact and fiction…
Seventeen years after Gods And Monsters, an embellished account of the last days of director James Whale, Bill Condon, Ian McKellen and composer Carter Burwell reunite to tell another sensitive story about a retired great contemplating his past. This time, the retiree is Conan Doyle’s fictional creation Sherlock Holmes (McKellen), as imagined through Mitch Cullin’s celebrated 2005 novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind.
Layers of fiction and history stack on top of each other to build Mr Holmes, a film that flits between the 1940s and 1910s as our hero struggles to remember the details of his last, traumatising case, one that prompted his exile to the Sussex countryside.
The film presents Sherlock Holmes as a real person frustrated by the “worthless” fiction and “vulgar” fame that surrounds him.

Director: Bill Condon; Screenwriter: Jeffrey Hatcher; Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Roger Allam, Frances de la Tour; Running time: 104 mins; Certificate: PG
Sherlock Holmes has never been more popular, what with Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller all putting their stamp on the character in a big-budget movie franchise and concurrent TV series respectively. With low-key drama Mr Holmes, director Bill Condon goes farther out into imagined realms, casting Ian McKellen as the Baker Street detective at 93, when that famous intellect is beginning to fail, leading him on a fascinating, quite poignant search of his own soul.
Mitch Cullin's source novel A Slight Trick of the Mind takes a mischievous leap by crediting the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to the recently deceased Dr Watson. These books are an endless source of bemusement for Holmes who, in 1947, is retired and living in the Sussex countryside,...

If you're expecting to see deerstalkers and a pipe in Ian McKellen's upcoming Sherlock movie Mr Holmes then you're in for a shock.
In the drama, McKellen plays a 93-year-old Holmes who's seen his life mythologised by John Watson's written accounts of their exploits.
The Baker Street sleuth is now living in anonymity on a Sussex farmhouse after failing to crack a case some 30 years earlier.
Gods and Monsters director Bill Condon will reunite with McKellen on the film, which is based on Mitch Cullin's 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind.
Laura Linney, Roger Allam and Milo Parker feature in the supporting cast.
Mr Holmes will open in UK cinemas on June 19.
