- Several years ago my college roommate took on a free opportunity to write in a local newspaper. An assignment came up to cover a local film festival, she was assigned to escort the Chief Critic from a major city's largest newspaper.
They spent lots of time together mostly watching and discussing films. The big-city critic liked her knowledge, instincts, and love of films, so after the festival, he assigned her work as an occasional freelance reviewer and interviewer.
A few years later, after they had built a strong working relationship, he decided to retire and convinced his bosses to name her as his successor.
