Mitch Rowland, Harry Styles’ touring guitarist and co-writer, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform his song “Here Comes the Comeback.” The singer and guitarist took center stage alongside his band to showcase the mid-tempo folk-pop number.
Rowland is known for co-writing hits like “Watermelon Sugar” and “Sign of the Times” and recently won a Grammy for Album of the Year for his work on Styles’ global blockbuster Harry’s House. Styles once described the guitarist to Rolling Stone as “super inspiring,” adding, “There’s a magic to Mitch, past him being so good.

Baltimore band Angel Dust has released a remix EP of “Never Ending Game,” featuring new versions by Animal Collective’s Panda Bear and Canadian producer Lunice.
Taken from last year’s surprise EP Lil House, Panda Bear’s remix (above) minimizes the acoustic guitar and adds lush instrumentals, while Lunice’s version is heavier, with bass and synths. “I don’t see the light/Open up the blinds,” Justice Tripp sings. “Gimme some more/No Hot Wheel cars on hardwood floors.”
Lil House was produced by Rob Schnapf, known for his work with Elliott Smith.

The Doors’ Robby Krieger played jazzy guitar on “All the Time in the World,” the closing track of Alphabetland, X’s first album in decades, and now the L.A. punk group is releasing another song they recorded together.
On Alphabetland, “Strange Life,” was a relatively straightforward punk rocker (and a catchy one at that), but Krieger’s contribution to the new version gives the song a little more texture, as he plays some pleasantly meandering slide-guitar licks underneath the chorus. The track is one of two B-sides that comprise X’s new outtakes comp,...

Los Angeles’ premier punk band, X, are surprise-releasing Alphabetland, their first new album in 27 years, today via Bandcamp.
Although the group issued their last LP, Hey Zeus!, in 1993, the recording marks the first new music by the ensemble’s original members since 1985’s Ain’t Love Grand!
“When your heart is broken, you think every song is about that,” vocalist-bassist John Doe said in a statement. “These songs were written in the last 18 months and it blows my mind how timely they are. We all want our family, friends and...

Pretty much every singer-songwriter who achieves any kind of success on their own eventually struggles with the same question: Keep things spare, or scale up, trying out a lusher sonic palette? Some who take the latter route stumble, but Elliott Smith soared. Figure 8 — the final album he released during his lifetime, which came out 20 years ago, on April 18th, 2000 — showed how the rich yet tasteful settings he crafted with co-producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf only highlighted the gemlike beauty of his songs.
But the idea of Smith as an indie-folk bard hung around.

X’s new video for “Delta 88 Nightmare” doesn’t feature the band itself, but the next generation: Exene Cervenka’s son Henry Mortensen (who also directed the video) and niece Carolyn Allen.
In the clip, the pair trek to Cannery Row, the famous waterfront area in Monterey, California, a fitting adventure as the video delves into the X’s rough-and-tumble memories of the late Seventies and their youth.
Mortensen and Allen’s journey is interspersed with vintage black and white footage of the area, echoing an experience Cervenka and John Doe shared in the Seventies.

Kurt Vile played an amiable version of his track “Loading Zones” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The track mixes pealing guitars — the lead part sounded more than a little like Neil Young circa Weld — with cheerfully inscrutable lyrics. “Sure, they knighted me yesterday/ But who needs armor when I have an exoskeleton?” Vile and his other guitarist ended the performance by trading intertwining licks while the crowd nodded along.
“Loading Zones” was released as the lead single from Vile’s Bottle It In album in August and is one of Rolling...

Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, has unveiled the new video for her heartfelt rendition of Rihanna’s “Stay.” It’s the third single, following “Woman” and “Wanderer,” from her forthcoming album, Wanderer.
Filmed by her frequent collaborator Greg Hunt in the Los Angeles studio of Rob Schnapf, the visual features Marshall on piano in the darkened studio framed by candlelight. She’s filmed in the round, echoing the song’s “round and around and around we go” lyrics. Her lilting vocals are buoyed by the spare melody and light backing vocals and strings.

Kurt Vile will release a new solo album, Bottle It In, on October 12th via Matador Records. He previewed the 13-track LP with “Bassackwards,” a nearly 10-minute exploration of meditative acoustic fingerpicking, reversed psychedelic guitars and existential lyrics.
“I was on the beach, but I was thinking about the bay,” the indie-rocker sings over a simple folk riff and steady rhythm section. “Got to the bay, but by then I was far away/ I was on the ground but looking straight into the sun/ But the sun went down and...

Toronto punks Dilly Dally unveiled a swelling ode to sobriety with “Sober Motel” off their upcoming album Heaven, out September 14th.
“Sober Motel” is a towering punk ballad that pulls off the classic soft-loud structure with a unique edge. The track is centered around the heavy march of drums, quivering guitar lines that fill the negative space between each beat and the vocals of singer Katie Monks, who guides the track with her serrated wail.
Monks said “Sober Motel” “is a celebration of sobriety, in the midst of an industry that is everything but.

A sweet, tortured soul blessed with a beautiful voice and gifted songwriting chops, Elliott Smith burned brightly in the time he was with us. His sudden death ten years ago sent shock waves through the music world, and even a decade on, it's hard to believe he's gone, with no more music to share with us. But there's plenty to celebrate with the life and tunes he left behind and director Nickolas Rossi's upcoming documentary, "Heaven Adores You," will endeavor to do just that. A new teaser trailer has dropped for the crowd-funded film that will premiere at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Indeed, it's a sensitive look at the musician from those that orbited his world. Those taking part include bandmates, producers, family and friends, including Jon Brion, Larry Crane, Rob Schnapf, Kill Rock Stars label owner Slim Moon, and many more. "Heaven Adores You" premieres on Monday,...

It's just over ten years since the world lost Elliott Smith, a remarkably talented singer/songwriter who struggled with addiction and various other demons, all while releasing a catalog of music that continues to inspire to this day. Vulnerable and bracingly raw, his songs, even at their most produced and polished, were still imbued with deep feeling and an honesty that connected immediately with his fans. While much has been written and spoken about the performer, he'll be getting the big screen treatment in "Heaven Adores You." Directed by Nickolas Rossi, and featuring the participation of Joanna Bolme, Jon Brion, Neil Gust, Larry Crane, Rob Schnapf, and more, the documentary will feature unheard music and unseen footage of Smith, promising an in depth and respectful look at the late musician. Here's the official synopsis: Heaven Adores You is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith...
