J Stevens (they/them) is a Calgary-born filmmaker. With over a decade of experience behind the camera, J's mission is to continue bringing dynamic, personal, and visually captivating LGBTQ+ content to the forefront.
J is the co-creator, cinematographer, and director of the high-energy mockumentary series, Slo Pitch (IFC/OutTV). J directed two episodes of Astrid & Lilly Save the World (Crave, Syfy) as well as on season two of the Peabody award-winning series, Sort Of (HBO Max, CBC). J's directed all episodes of the series, Stories from my Gay Grandparents which is premiering at Inside Out. J recently wrapped production on their directorial debut feature film, Really Happy Someday.
J received a Best Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series nomination at the Directors Guild of Canada Awards 2022 for Astrid & Lilly Save The World. J was named one of Playback Magazine's 'Top 10 Filmmakers To Watch 2022' and was selected for the TIFF Filmmakers Lab 2022 as well as one of TIFF's Every Story Fellows.
J is the founder of Spindle Films Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports transgender, non-binary, two-spirit, and gender-diverse Canadian filmmakers.
