Nicole Kidman is not one of the highest-paid actresses in the world for no reason. With her consistently incredible work in film and television, the actress has time and again proved that she can do anything and everything, no matter the genre. Whether it’s a thriller like Destroyer or a rom-com like Just Go with It, Nicole Kidman knows just how to do justice to her roles.

She has also worked as a producer on many projects including Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller, Special Ops: Lioness. The television series stars Zoe Saldaña in the lead role as Joe, a CIA officer in charge of the Lioness program. Nicole Kidman also has a supporting, yet pivotal role in the series, which was custom-made by Taylor Sheridan himself just so he could get the actress to come in front of the cameras for the show.

Paramount+ was called, by some, the Star Trek channel when it first launched, but it rapidly was changed to the Taylor Sheridan channel, as his various series fuel their original programming slate. Thankfully, they are different and distinct, each with its own genre.
After conquering the modern and historic Western, he gave us the gritty Mayor of Kingstown and Sly Stallone’s Tulsa King. Then, this fall, came Special Ops: Lioness, an international espionage story that was (finally) female-centric.

Zoe Saldana plays Joe in Paramount’s spy-thriller series Special Ops: Lioness, where she’s the ruthless and cutthroat supervisor of a marine team at work and the mother of two girls at home. Zoe plays the role to perfection, often making us dislike her for the way she treats the protagonist, Laysla de Oliveira, and other times earning the audience’s adulation for perfectly presenting the dilemma of choosing between saving the world and her home. Here’s a detailed look into the character of Joe from Special Ops: Lioness.
Joe had one goal: to make her Lioness project succeed by any means possible. After witnessing an embedded agent of hers being killed by a missile strike after her cover was blown, Joe made it her mission to find such an agent who’d not break, no matter how terrifying the risk of death seemed. She made no bones about hiding,...

Laysla de Oliveira stars as Cruz Manuelos in Paramount’s Special Ops: Lioness, where she plays an undercover agent as part of the task she’s assigned as a marine. As luck would have it, Cruz falls in love with the woman she’s about to betray, and that’s what makes her story so painful. After being misunderstood, hurt, and humiliated her whole life, the first time she’s treated with kindness, her mission dictates that she betray the person who showered her with all the love. Here’s a detailed look into the character of Cruz in Special Ops: Lioness.
The first time we met Cruz, she was barely surviving in a toxic relationship, where a slap across the face and insults were all she received from her boyfriend. However, having been slapped one too many times, Cruz, a lanky and bony young woman, woke up one...

Special Ops: Lioness agent Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) may have successfully neutralized her "Ace of Spades," but Taylor Sheridan's season finale offers little catharsis. "Gone Is the Illusion of Order," an episode title that reflects the can of worms opened up by the mission, introduces a major problem for Lioness leader Joe (Zoe Saldaña) and her bosses at the CIA, Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly): It turns out the White House didn't want billionaire terrorist Asmar Ali Amrohi (Bassem Youssef) dead, after all. The revelation leaves the team at odds with American leadership, who reap the benefits of instability in the Middle East, setting the stage for a clandestine political showdown that will play out in the months ahead.

After a season's worth of tension, Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 Episode 7 finally sets its plans in motion, despite a few unexpected hiccups.
As the team prepares for an increasingly complex mission, Joe and Cruz's stories crash together in a messy, tension-filled collision that sets up a bundle of what-ifs for the impending finale.
Cruz, who's been circling the drain with her feelings for Stephanie Nur's Aaliyah growing deeper each day, finally gave up trying to fight herself in a moment of desperation.
Aaliyah took Cruz to New York City for some last-minute harried wedding shopping, where the champagne was flowing freely while they perused their options. Things grew intensely real when they were finally away from the Amrohi security team.
Though it's apparent she realizes it's a luxury with a time limit, Aaliyah's been used to getting what she wants for most of her life. Stephanie Nur's Aaliyah...

“Special Ops: Lioness” is one of the most intense shows currently streaming and this exclusive clip, which you can watch above, is no different.
The moment comes from Sunday’s upcoming episode (streaming exclusively on Paramount+), “Wish the Fight Away,” and sees Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), a former fry cook turned Marine who is recruited for the Lioness program to help infiltrate a terrorist network (by befriending the terrorist’s young daughter), interrogated by her superiors, who just so happen to be played by Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman. Saldaña and Kidman are trying to figure out if Cruz’s cover has been blown and things get … heated. Has Cruz gotten too close to her target? And will she be able to successfully carry out her mission?

It's a blessing and a curse that Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 Episode 5 doesn't allow Joe to linger or wallow over issues.
As she deals with the direct aftermath of her daughter Kate's traumatic car accident, Cruz heals from her assault on her own.
Joe's complex emotions about Kate and Cruz are palpable, but with no time to waste, we can never sit in the feelings for long before the next punch is thrown.
As Joe navigates problems she's never dealt with, Cruz does her best to stay afloat after a series of difficulties.
Without knowing the gravity of what Joe's going through, Cruz feels comfortable pushing her superiors' buttons in a way she hasn't before.
For Zoe Saldaña's consistently stoic Joe, this episode offers a genuine look into her emotions in a raw, authentic way that packs a punch. Aware that her daughter is feeling the weight of sacrifice,...

Nicole Kidman’s CIA senior supervisor Kaitlyn Meade firmly informs Joe’s Qrf team how things are gonna be in an exclusive sneak peek from this Sunday’s episode of Paramount+’s Special Ops: Lioness.
When last we tuned into the freshman espionage drama, Kaitlyn had made a special trip to inform Joe (played by Zoe Saldana) — in person — that team members Two Cups, Tucker and Randy, when begrudgingly “lent out” to CIA case officer Kyle to handle an extraction in Van Horn, Texas, got caught on camera by Border Patrol. And said extraction, we know, wound up involving multiple casualties.

Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 Episode 4 unravels the threads of Joe's life, simultaneously plucking at the strings of her career and family.
As Cruz gets in deeper with Aaliyah and her friends, things escalate quickly and eventually become dire during a seemingly low-stakes outing.
Joe is dealing with a secondary work crisis on top of Cruz's issues when her family situation comes crashing down in this harrowing episode, leaving everything unresolved.
Joe's career is typically the most significant stressor in her life, so when we see her family situation crumbling before her eyes when Kate's involved in a severe car accident, it's more jarring than usual.
Meanwhile, Cruz feels like she's entirely in control of Aaliyah and her friend group until she finds herself in grave danger without the ability to fend for herself.
Cruz's undercover operation runs smoothly early in the episode as she bonds with Aaliyah.

Taylor Sheridan's grip on Paramount+ continues to tighten.
Special Ops: Lioness, the Yellowstone super producer's latest project, is off to a strong start.
Deadline reports that it is the streamer's most-watched global series premiere in its first 24 hours, beating out Halo Season 1 Episode 1.
The series' first two episodes also aired linearly on Paramount Network over the last two Sundays, but the remaining episodes will be kept exclusively for the streaming service.
It's unclear whether that could change down the line.
Paramount Network has recently aired 1883 in its entirety, so there's always that chance they could do something similar for Special Ops: Lioness Season 1.
Paramount Global has revealed that the series premiere has a combined audience of almost 6 million across the streaming service globally and linear viewing on the cable network in the U.S.

Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 Episode 3 drops Cruz into the world of Aaliyah Amrohi without a parachute.
Cruz, undercover alone for the first time, leaves Joe and the Lioness team behind.
Without the ability to keep contact with her, they're left to work double time and manage to build weeks' worth of tension in one high-intensity hour.
As we delve deeper into the world of the Middle Eastern elite, it's clear that Cruz is at a deficit. She's trying to fit in, but Joe instructs her to be as dull as possible.
While Cruz is undercover, Joe never stops moving. This may be to her detriment, but it's Joe's way. She's fast, efficient, and never in one place for long.
Throughout Special Ops: Lioness Season 1, we've seen the overall plot threads begin to be woven together. Joe's family life, which she's sparing about at work, has become complicated as her daughter Kate rebels.

Taylor Sheridan's Special Ops: Lioness paints several pictures in its premiere but doesn't allow viewers to settle into any of them.
This, it seems, is by design. Things are meant to move quickly in Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 Episode 1, "Sacrificial Soldiers." There is never enough time to truly stop and reflect, both within and outside the confines of war.
Joe, played by a shaken but confident Zoe Saldaña, is the leader of a CIA special task force, Lioness. This task force is meant to take down high-value targets in the middle east by using those targets' wives, girlfriends, and daughters.
While Joe has lost an asset at the top of the series, the premiere episode focuses on her newest operative, a Marine named Cruz Manuelos.

There’s a moment late in Barbie when a character lays out all the contradictory demands placed on women: to be strong but not too strong, pretty but not too vain, ambitious but never aggressive, and on and on and on. It’s an inconceivable standard for anyone to meet, even a perky toy doll, and the film’s conclusion is that the only way to live with them is by letting go of the pressure to try.
But the thing about cultural scripts is that they’re damnably hard to shake. There are always going to be people trying to thread that needle, no matter how clearly impossible it is. And so we get stuff like Paramount+’s Special Ops: Lioness, a series that tries so hard to meet some broadly palatable ideal that it largely forgets to do anything interesting.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] “When I read [the scripts], every single episode I was like, oh my god, just ripping through the pages, and I was so happy to see that translated to the screen as well, that you’re just like on the edge of your seat the whole time,” Michael Kelly told TV Insider of his new thriller Special Ops: Lioness (premiering on July 23 on Paramount+). Kelly’s Donald Westfield, the deputy director of the CIA, oversees the Lioness Program with Nicole Kidman‘s Kaitlyn Meade; it’s Joe (Zoe Saldaña) who enlists Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) to go undercover among the power brokers of State terrorism in the agency’s efforts to thwart the next 9/11. Here, Kelly tells us as much as he can about his character and the show. Plus, watch an exclusive sneak peek from the premiere above. What should we know about Westfield’s professional past and...

Plot: Inspired by an actual U.S. Military program, Special Ops: Lioness follows the life of Joe (Saldaña) while she attempts to balance her personal and professional life as the tip of the CIA’s spear in the war on terror. The Lioness Program, overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Kidman) and Donald Westfield (Kelly), enlists an aggressive Marine Raider named Cruz (De Oliveira) to operate undercover alongside Joe among the power brokers of State terrorism in the CIA’s efforts to thwart the next 9/11.
Review: With Yellowstone wrapping at the end of the current season, Taylor Sheridan’s oeuvre of series on Paramount Network and Paramount+ continues to grow. Unlike Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and the various Yellowstone spin-offs, Sheridan’s latest series leaves the wild world of small-town politics and crime for a larger scale. Now that Taylor Sheridan has won the TV Western revival with “Yellowstone” and its universe of prequels, he’s pivoting to the Middle East. “Special Ops: Lioness” is a female-driven contemporary espionage thriller where the white hats are CIA special forces, and the black hats are Middle Eastern terrorists. Helicopters and heavy artillery have replaced horses and shotguns.
Setting aside Sheridan’s recent inexplicable Emmy nomination snubs, the multi-hyphenate can tell an engrossing story that entwines flat-out action and interpersonal drama. Here, as showrunner and sole writer, he’s created an eight-part series that recalls movies like Kathryn Bigelow’s breathless yet intimate “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker.” We’ve got the fog of war, and the way that warps reality when the warrior returns stateside.
At its center is the athletic beauty Zoe Saldaña. She plays Joe, a kickass CIA special ops team leader accustomed to, if not entirely comfortable with,...
