Daniel Radcliffe has battled wizards, weathered live-streamed death matches, and soon, he'll be seen fiddling with an accordion. But one of the most challenging roles for the English actor required him to play dead.
"Swiss Army Man" confounded and thrilled audiences from its festival run to its wide release in 2016. From directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (the duo behind that bonkers music video for DJ Snake and Lil' Jon's party banger "Turn Down For What"), the freaky feature follows the friendship formed between an isolated man (Paul Dano) and a farting corpse that washes ashore (Radcliffe). And that's just the opening sequence in an unapologetically strange tale exploring the spiritual-physical connection within the human body.
Looking back on his roles with GQ, Radcliffe recalls excitement and trepidation at playing a dead man, and how makeup assuaged his fears. Radcliffe explains:
"I was like, 'Yeah, I want to be involved in this.

Cards on the table: For reasons I can't really fathom, I made the choice to watch "The Lost City" for the first time after seeing "Rrr" earlier that same day. As such, I can't help but suspect that I came away being harder on the Nee Brothers' fluffy, harmless "Romancing the Stone" throwback than I might've been, had I not just experienced S. S. Rajamouli's superb maximalist epic.
That's not to suggest "The Lost City" (which /Film's Hoai-Tran Bui reviewed here) doesn't deserve to be dragged a little. It's a derivative rom-com adventure film that's mostly content to float by on a blend of Channing Tatum's himbo charms and his screwball hijinks with Sandra Bullock, complete with action scenes and visuals that are par for the course for a lot of recent Hollywood tentpoles (read: under-lit and done with minimum effort compared to those in "Rrr"). Bless him,...

The "Harry Potter" films featured a who's who of great British actors. Being the closest thing the United Kingdom has had to a Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes sense that it attracted talented performers of all sorts from the other side of the pond. Greats like Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, and Alan Rickman (who was not having a ton of fun while he was there) brought their huge talents to the wizarding world.
For a young actor like Daniel Radcliffe, finding himself surrounded by multiple masters of the craft, it had to have been a surreal experience to work with so many legends. But according to Radcliffe himself in a GQ interview, the actor he was most starstruck to work with wasn't involved in the "Harry Potter" franchise at all. There nothing was more thrilling than working with Sandra Bullock on "The Lost City."
"Honestly, getting to work with [Bullock] was such a thrill.

The rom-com was considered a dead genre when it began to consume itself, generating imitations that paled with each iteration, the predictability unable to overcome the star power. There have been a few sparks of life here and there, but as a film genre, it’s more moribund than not.
So, it’s a bit of a surprise to see one of its queens, Sandra Bullock, starring in a glossy, big budget rom-com after moving away from them for so long. Here, she’s a producer and star and at one point considered it dated given the seven years it was in development (never a good sign). She was right, it is dated and somewhat tired and still as predictable as one would imagine. Still, The Lost City is the first of its kind in a while and when it arrived in March, we could all have used something light and dairy.

Aaron and Adam Nee's "The Lost City" recently made an unexpectedly large splash in theaters, earning over 170 million worldwide and generally pleasing critics. The film is about a romance author (Sandra Bullock) who only turned to writing archeology-themed smut when her interest and skill in genuine archeology was stymied by the death of her husband. Daniel Radcliffe plays a spoiled billionaire named Abigail Fairfax who understands that Bullock has written actual archeological clues into her novels kidnaps her to find a real-life treasure on a remote tropical island before the island's volcano erupts. Fairfax is depicted as violent, sociopathic, impetuous, entitled,...

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum headline this treasure-seeking adventure comedy that harks back to Romancing the Stone (1984). Co-directed by Adam and Aaron Nee, The Lost City is a delightful throwback to 1980s screwball escapism, delivering a sweet combination of nostalgic thrills and modern-day jokes.
Bullock plays popular author Loretta Sage, who’s grown tired of her series of saucy adventure-slash-romance novels, following the death of her archaeologist husband five years previously. She’s also grown tired of Alan (Channing Tatum), the sweet-but-dim model who poses as her novel series hero Dash on all her covers and is a constant presence on her book tours, to the evident pleasure of her audiences.

There are few things as uplifting as the embrace of laughter. And one of the loveliest ways to experience that embrace is in the dark surrounded by strangers*, with popcorn in your lap and the warmth of a cinema screen brightening your eyes and mood. It takes an unabashedly funny film to unite a room in laughter, happily The Lost City is just that.

“The Lost City” is set to both honor the ‘author-becomes-adventurer’ trope and add to it by calling back to the action-romance genre. Sandra Bullock follows in the footsteps Jodie Foster’s agoraphobic author in “Nim’s Island” (2008) and Brooke Shields’ romance writer Sophie in “A Castle for Christmas” (2021) as she plays a romance novelist who gets lost on her own adventure with a cover model.
The film boasts quite a stacked cast of stars and promises both rom-com laughs and adventure movie thrills.

Channing Tatum modeled the look of his “The Lost City” character after Brad Pitt.
On “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Thursday, Tatum shared with DeGeneres that working with Pitt was a dream, and that he was inspired by one of Pitt’s movies for his own romance novel cover model character’s look.
“I gave a note. I have to wear a wig for my cover model sort of look, Dash’s look, and I said ‘I just want to look like “Legends of the Fall” Brad Pitt. ‘Could you please just make me that? Make me as close to that as you can possibly make me,'” he said.
Tatum’s character Dash, who he compares to Fabio, models for covers of romance novels written by Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock). In the film, Dash rescues Loretta after eccentric billionaire Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe) kidnaps her.

The Lost City, directed by Aaron and Adam Nee and written by Oren Uziel, Dana Fox and Adam Nee, comes at the right time to make audiences laugh. I mean, it’s formulaic, but with its slapstick humor and smoldering leads Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, the film is a deserved addition to the treasure-hunting adventure film genre.
Loretta Sage (Bullock) is an author of romance novels who just finished a new story. She speaks of adventures, buried treasure, and lost, ancient cities in her books while deciphering dead languages. Since her husband died, she lives as a recluse while harping on the past. Her publicist Beth (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) arranges a book tour featuring the male model representing Dash, a character in her book. His real name is Alan (Tatum), and they do not get along.
Dressed as a Solid Gold dancer, Loretta’s first stop on tour is a disaster.

You know studio movies are in a rut when, amid endless Spider-Bat sequels, you find yourself longing for the likes of such escapist 1980s offerings as “Romancing the Stone” and “King Solomon’s Mines.” I can’t be the only one who’s been craving a good old-fashioned treasure hunt, where the leads throw sparks and the ladies’ makeup never smudges, no matter how close to the volcano they get. After a long stretch without such a big-screen Hollywood adventure movie, “The Lost City” makes for welcome counter-programming.
The story was producer Seth Gordon’s idea, but credit siblings Adam and Aaron Nee (who tested the waters with their Mark Twain-inspired “Band of Robbers”) for sprucing up the formula, while Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum supply the chemistry. Bullock plays brainy romance novelist Loretta Sage, who’s lost her inspiration since the death of her husband, an archaeologist who might have been onto something.

‘The Lost City’ Review: Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s Chemistry Carries Charming Jungle Comedy
In Adam and Aaron Nee’s “The Lost City,” a wild, careening screwball comedy set in the jungle, the stars are on full display — and they need to be. See, the directing duo are following a similar roadmap used by “Romancing the Stone,” the Indiana Jones franchise, and Tomb Raider: colossal big-budget adventures dependent upon the stars who lead them as much as the exotic locations they call home. Here, a quartet of marquee names carry a knowingly pastiche romp whose lightweight charm somehow impedes its path to rom-com success.
You can’t totally blame the Nees for leaning heavily on their ensemble. In a slapdash comedy filled with big punchlines — and even bigger explosions — they’ve assembled a couple of the best comedic personalities available in Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum.
