Orange Is the New Black helped put Netflix on the map. Now, several of the supporting stars on the trailblazing prison dramedy are looking back on the show’s breakout and continued success to ask why they weren’t fairly compensated.
Their questions, coming as the Jenji Kohan-created series celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its July 11, 2013, premiere, surfaced in a New Yorker story published ahead of SAG-AFTRA announcing an actors strike after the union failed to reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) group of studios and streamers. And many of the Oitnb castmembers’ woes reflect the issues at heart of the tense negotiations between SAG and the AMPTP.

Warning: the following post contains spoilers for the final season of Orange Is the New Black.
Every fan of the beloved Orange Is the New Black knows that the show is based on the real-life experiences of Piper Kerman and her memoir of the same title. Kerman has been an executive consultant and writer for the Netflix show since it premiered in 2013, but in the emotional series finale, the author managed to sneak in a cameo alongside the real Larry Smith.
During the final episode of season, "Here's Where We Get Off," we flash forward to see Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) visiting her wife Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) at the prison in Ohio. Before focusing in on Chapman and Vause, Kerman and Smith appear as another couple during visitation.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Orange Is the New Black!
The year 2010 marked when Piper Kerman really turned her life around. She went from former inmate of Danbury Federal Corrections Institution to New York Times bestselling author of Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. If you skipped the famous memoir, you were likely pulled in by the popular Netflix adaption of the same name, loosely based on Kerman's experience. She may appear in the series finale, but the show's ending depicts a very different story than how Piper and her fellow inmates end up. If you're fixated on shipping the characters or biting your nails at the prison drama, you're in for a real surprise.

Orange Is the New Black starring Sarah Paulson? No, that never happened. But maybe it could have… In an oral history about the acclaimed show's seven-season run, series creator Jenj Kohan, executive producers, the cast and book author Piper Kerman looked back at the show's beginnings and how it almost ended. "The book was initially optioned by Ryan Murphy before it was completed. He had a Fox deal and I remember naively thinking, 'I hope the show doesn't come out before my book is done.' That didn't happen, and the rights reverted to me," Kerman, who was an executive consultant on the show, told The Hollywood Reporter. Lohan ended up getting the rights and took it to...

It took only 13 hours for Orange Is the New Black to change the television industry and cement disruptor Netflix as a home for original content.
And it all started with a "yes" from the streamer's head of originals Cindy Holland, who, with the support of content chief Ted Sarandos, handed out a then-unheard-of 13-episode, straight-to-series order for a prison-set dramedy from Jenji Kohan. The showrunner was wrapping a long run on Showtime's Weeds when a friend gave her Piper Kerman's memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. After Showtime and HBO passed,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the final season of “Orange is the New Black,” streaming now on Netflix.
When Netflix first debuted “Orange is the New Black” in 2013, it introduced audiences to the harsh realities of life within even a minimum security prison. Originally classified as a comedy, the show shone a spotlight on the big and often bright personalities of the women incarcerated at the fictional Litchfield prison, some of whom were there due to broken systems but more of whom did some very bad things and were serving their time. As the seasons went on, the show leaned more into the drama (and was reclassified as such), featuring stories revolving on drug smuggling, violence at the hands of guards, and even a season-long prison riot which resulted in moving to a maximum security setting for many of the key players. All the while,...

Orange Is the New Black was technically the second of Netflix’s original series to debut, arriving five months after House of Cards in 2013. But where Cards was exactly the kind of antihero drama that had been made for years on cable TV (Netflix in fact won a bidding war with HBO for it), Orange felt like something new in almost every way. As the women’s prison drama enters its seventh and final season this week, it feels right to celebrate it as the first series explicitly designed for the streaming era,...

When Netflix debuted “House of Cards” in 2013, it seemed like streaming was going to mimic premium cable as we already knew it. The premiere of “Orange Is the New Black” five months later ended that notion for good. Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, the show ostensibly followed Piper (played by Taylor Schilling), a bright but naive white woman from Connecticut reeling from the shock of a past mistake that has sent her to prison years later. Soon enough, however, Kohan steered the series in a different direction, pulling the rug out from under its initial premise by widening its scope far beyond Piper to the surrounding inmates, whose experiences looked nothing like her own. “Orange Is the New Black” dove headfirst into the challenge of depicting the interlocking stories of poor, queer, addicted inmates of many races; the women of Litchfield Penitentiary quickly became one of the most inclusive casts TV had ever seen.

Ending a series after seven seasons isn't easy, but Orange Is the New Black has it particularly difficult.
There are a lot of factors at play as creator/producer Jenji Kohan tries to touch on just the right amounts of comedy and drama, the present and past storylines the series has juggled since inception, and the enormity of the cast now spread out in many different locations.
Whether you're ultimately satisfied with the result will depend a lot on how you've viewed the series over the years.
Before watching the final season, you have to come to grips with the fact that Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) was the genesis for our engagement with all of the other characters.
Being a white woman of privilege has been a knock against her character from the beginning, and it was her drop off the pedestal that landed her in Litchfield.

Netflix has released the full trailer for the seventh and final season of Orange is the New Black. It looks like its going to deliver a very heavy and emotional ending.
Orange is the New Black is one of Netflix's longest-running and most-awarded series. I’ve enjoyed watching the series over the course of its run, but its time for this story to come to a close. This has been a great show to watch and I’m hoping that it ends on a high note.
The series centers around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a public relations executive with a career and a fiance when her past suddenly catches up to her. “In her mid-30s she is sentenced to spend time in a minimum-security women's prison in Connecticut for her association with a drug runner 10 years earlier. Forced to trade power suits for prison orange, Chapman makes her way...

The inmates of Litchfield Prison could only dream about the kind of mass exit experienced by the cast of Orange is the New Black yesterday, though they no doubt would not feel the same sadness.
“Oitnb series wrap!,” wrote Taylor Schilling on her Instagram page, one of many cast members posting their public goodbyes on social media as the seventh and final season of the Netflix prison comedy-drama wrapped yesterday. “Whoa. My heart is full and achey and so overflowing with gratitude I’m a little dizzy.”
“This is a family,” wrote creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan as the caption of a photo of cast and crew posing on the prison set. (See it and all social media messages below).
The social media farewells actually began in the days building up to yesterday’s wrap, with some cast members marking their own final days of filming over the past week or so.

Having spent six years playing Piper Kerman on Orange Is the New Black, it should surprise no one that Taylor Schilling has experienced her fair share of unpleasant moments on screen. For instance, as a Litchfield inmate, she has her teeth shattered, finds herself starting a used panties business, and is held down while getting a swastika burned into her arm. And yet much of that pales in comparison to what Schilling's character must endure in The Prodigy.

After six seasons in Litchfield Penitentiary, Taylor Schilling is branching out into a new genre. The actress, who starred as Piper Kerman on Netflix’s long-running hit, “Orange Is the New Black,” has finished her first post “Orange” project, and it’s a chilling one. Schilling will star in “The Prodigy,” a new horror movie about a possessed child with a script by Jeff Buhler, who penned the forthcoming remake of “Pet Sematary,” the novel by Stephen King. “The Prodigy” is produced by Tripp Vinson (“The Exorcism of Emily Rose”) and directed by Nicholas McCarthy (“At the Devil’s Door”).
The most exciting pairing of the project, however, is Schilling’s co-star, young Jackson Robert Scott, who played Georgie Denborough in last year’s hit Stephen King adaptation, “It.” Scott plays Schilling’s son, Miles, who is possessed by some sort of demon spirit.

In its sixth season, Netflix’s prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black” continues to draw a sizable audience, remaining one of the streamer’s most-watched original series, according to Nielsen.
“Oitnb” is particularly strong among viewers 18-49, and — unsurprisingly, given the predominantly female cast — 66% of the audience is women, Nielsen research shows.
The first episode of “Orange Is the New Black” season 6 drew an average-minute audience of over 5.37 million U.S. viewers in the initial three days of availability (July 27-29), per Nielsen’s Svod Content Ratings measurement service. About 71% of that audience was in the 18-49 demo.
Across all 13 episodes, season 6 had an average minute audience of 2.56 million U.S. viewers in the first three days on Netflix, 73% of whom were in the 18-49 bracket.

By now, you're likely aware that Orange Is the New Black is inspired by the real-life experiences of author/former prisoner Piper Kerman. But after five seasons (and with a sixth on the way), it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that most of the show's storylines are fabricated. However, seeing that the story is inspired by truth, I wanted to find out just how accurate the show is from a former inmate - so I tracked one down. My interviewee requested that her name be withheld, so I'll just refer to her as the Former Inmate. At age 52, she served six months at a correctional facility in San Mateo, CA, in the '90s, as a result of several DUIs. She had some fascinating things to say, not to mention some really outrageous stories.

Warning: If you haven't watched season six of Orange Is the New Black, you probably don't want to read the spoilers ahead.
Season six of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black brought new drama, new relationships, and of course, new flashbacks. While the latest season was thrilling and had the same feel of some of the earlier seasons, it wasn't until the last scene when our jaws truly hit the floor. With the juxtaposition of Piper, Blanca, and Taystee's futures - all vastly different, yet wildly powerful - viewers are able to see the true significance of the show and how it always explores relevant issues of the modern day. Taylor Schilling (Piper Chapman) recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss Piper's next chapter and what life outside of Litchfield and without Alex by her side will mean for the character.

If you're a fan of Orange Is the New Black, then you know by now that it's based on the real experiences of Piper Kerman. Kerman, known as Piper Chapman (and played by Taylor Schilling) on the show, published a bestselling memoir of the same name. While Kerman says the show, headed by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, is not a docudrama whatsoever, her real-life experience does come through in the series. Obviously, the show has diverted a lot since we've been through five seasons now.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV adaptation of a book/book series?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
Ok, I listed like 50 answers for last week’s Guest Stars question and I’m determined not to cheat this week! Kinda. The answer is “Friday Night Lights,” but I acknowledge that there are caveats, because the NBC TV series was based on the feature film, which was based on Buzz Bissinger’s book, so is the show based on a book or based on a movie? Well, because Peter Berg adapted both, I’m gonna say they’re both based on the book, because really the only continuity...

When Orange Is The New Black first debuted on July 11, 2013 on Netflix, the Jenji Kohan-created series based on Piper Kerman's 2010 memoir was a pioneer in a new wave of what we still call television. Three years and several seasons later, the Emmy- and SAG Award-winning prison-set show is back for its fourth season with 13 episodes launching June 17 – and to paraphrase Taylor Schilling's Piper Chapman, "this is not other people’s sh*t." What this latest run of Oitnb is…...

The Orange is the New Black Season 4 trailer is here -- and if the 2 1/2 minute spot makes one thing crystal clear, it's that Piper (Taylor Schilling) isn't the star of the show anymore. In fairness, Piper's role has been diminishing ever since Season 2, and for good reason: Litchfield is chock-full of intriguing characters, and the Wasp-y bath soap entrepreneur is (no offense to Schilling) one of the least compelling of the bunch. I think her less-central storyline also speaks to Jenji Kohan's stated purpose around the time of the show's Season 1 premiere (via Collider:) "...when I read Piper Kerman’s book, I thought, 'This is a way into a really interesting world. It’s the yuppie’s eye view to get you in there.' If you go to a network and say, 'I wanna do prison stories about black women and Latino women and old women,' you...

Netflix is firing up the publicity machine for one of its biggest original hits Orange Is The New Black. While we’ve yet to see a full-length trailer for the Litchfield Ladies’ next outing, this latest gallery of snaps ought to tide you over until then.
Of all the characters destined to return, it looks like Piper (Taylor Schilling) is facing a new threat from her fellow inmates as one of the images shows her bound and gagged with a very worried expression on her face. That’s no surprise given the character’s history of stirring things up behind Litchfield’s bars. Elsewhere, it seems Alex survives that impending threat we saw in the season three finale, newcomer Judy King (Fringe alum Blair Brown) has taken over the kitchen, and Sofia appears unhappy with her predicament.
Schilling won’t be the only one dealing with the strife of life inside.

Most of Teresa Giudice’s new memoir, Turning the Tables: From Housewife to Inmate and Back Again, out today, is spent talking about how she spent her prison stay exercising three times a day, trying to avoid the awful food, crying, and missing her family. However, there are a few sterling tidbits in the 261 pages that really stood out about her 11 months at the Federal Correctional Institute, Danbury, the same prison that held Orange Is the New Black’s Piper Kerman and Lauryn Hill. Here they are, correlated into some thematic groupings that came up repeatedly.1. How her parents met. The early chapters of the book are about Giudice's life growing up in New Jersey and how she met her husband, Joe. Mostly, she talks about how strict her upbringing was. However, this little nugget about her parents first meeting in a small village in Italy certainly stood out,...

That project's similarities to Transparent spur Murphy to talk about another beloved dramedy he almost had a hand in: Orange Is the New Black. "Orange is the New Black" fans know that the series is based on a true story. While Piper Chapman was the name given to the show’s main character — and it was her perspective that initially introduced us to the world of Litchfield Penitentiary — the character was a portrayal of Piper Kerman, the author of "Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison." It took "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan and Netflix to turn Kerman’s memoir into the series that we have come to know and love. On Monday, Indiewire had the opportunity to participate in a town hall discussion entitled "What Television Can and Can't Tell Us About Women, the Drug War and Mass Incarceration," featuring Piper Kerman and sponsored by the Drug Policy Alliance. The Dpa is the nation’s leading organization promoting drug policies that are grounded in science, compassion, health, and human rights.
