Could an upset be brewing on Season 21 of “American Idol”? All year fans have been forecasting Iam Tongi would take home the top prize, but he may not be the sure bet we’ve assumed. This season closely resembles a similar lineup up finalists from Season 17 when 18-year old country crooner Laine Hardy took down fan favorite Alejandro Aranda, who, like Iam, had become a viral sensation since his first audition.
This time around it’s 18-year old Mississippi native Colin Stough who has progressively grown his fanbase each week, delivering honky-tonk renditions of some of music’s most popular tunes. Like Laine, he was barely a blip on viewers’ radar in early rounds, but as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have pointed out, his star continues to rise.

“My biggest supporter was definitely my dad,” said “American Idol” semifinalist Grace Kinstler at her audition in Los Angeles. “He passed away last February very unexpectedly. If Gold Derby’s predictions for “American Idol” Season 19 come true, Willie Spence is about to make history as the first Black male winner since Ruben Studdard. The “velvet teddy bear” won Season 2 of the reality TV singing sensation in 2003 over Clay Aiken and is still considered one of the best champions even two decades later. However, a Black man has never made it to the finale ever since, either as the winner or the runner-up. Can Willie break that curse?

“American Idol” just wrapped up season 18 on ABC. This got us wondering about which of the first 17 winners of this reality competition series has been the most successful. Last season “American Idol” viewers fell in love with Margie Mays, aka the girl who chirped like a bird and burped when she was nervous. Face it. Laine Hardy, the newly crowned winner of the 17th season of “American Idol,” was and is the full package. Young, handsome and talented. Yes, runner-up Alejandro Aranda, 24, is a much more accomplished and original artist and third-place finisher Madison VanDenburg, 17, has a set of pitch-perfect magical pipes (although I do wish the wardrobe handlers had dressed her less like a Vegas opening act and more like a teen).
But Louisiana boy Laine, 18, had one advantage that only Florida native Alyssa Ragu, 17, shared this season. They both tried out the previous year and were cut in the early rounds. That made them hungry and both used the time to improve before trying out again. However, Alyssa — a fave of judge Katy Perry who made it to the Top 8 — focused on polishing her performing skills as she took dance and singing lessons.

Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.

Even one of this season's fan favorites, latina drag queen Ada Vox, had to be saved by the judges. Marcio thinks that proves his point -- as do the show's 16 seasons with just four minority champs ... Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover and Ruben Studdard.

Just two years after it was cancelled by Fox, “American Idol” returns to ABC on March 11. When this reality competition series hit the airwaves back in 2002, it was a ratings smash, and many of its early winners enjoyed huge success. Indeed, its first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and parlayed her fame into a string of hit records and a new gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.”
However, many of the more recent music newcomers to be named “American Idol” have found that their time in the spotlight is fleeting. In the photo gallery above, we take a look back at the first 15 “American Idol” winners to date and see how many have been lucky so far and which have been jinxed.

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.
I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

Update: Another white guy from the South has done it: Trent Harmon won Season 15, making him our final American Idol. Both Trent and La'Porsha were strong talents, and Trent earned his fan support, but that makes 10 male winners and only five female winners in the history of the series. Is it just coincidence? Were the men just that much better or did the demographic shift toward favoring men over the course of the series? Four of the five women (Kelly, Fantasia, Carrie, Jordin) won their seasons in the first six years, and then we fell into the white guys with guitars trope that was occasionally just white guys from the South or cute white guys from wherever. Point to ponder: If Kelly Clarkson competed on a season in the past five or six years, would she have won?

"American Idol" just unleashed its final season preview. It should touch you. You get just the right glimpses of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Phillip Phillips, and a few other winners who filled you with strange, hopeful glee all those years ago. You remember most of the big names of the series. But there are some others you should recall too. Here are our five favorite underrated performances in the show's history. 1. Katelyn Epperly, "The Scientist" (Season 9) Ellen DeGeneres was doomed as a panelist when she declared this rendition "too slow." Iowa native Katelyn Epperly made Coldplay's "The Scientist" a proper ballad with this hushed rendering. She gets better and better as she goes along, adding color and dynamic. I 2. Didi Benami, "Play With Fire" (Season 9) Didi Benami triumphed (and kind of failed) in a number of rad ways here. What I love: She picked a song meaningful to her,...
