A day after Sundance juror Marlee Matlin walked out of the premiere of “Magazine Dreams” in protest, along with the rest of the festival jury, the Oscar winner talked in-depth about the importance of open captions on film. Speaking at the Variety and Stacy’s Pita Chip Rise brunch, an event celebrating female creators on Jan. 21, Matlin passionately advocated for better inclusive storytelling.
When asked about her work on the 2022 best picture winner “Coda” (which swept the 2021 Sundance fest as well), Matlin stressed the lengths her film took to embrace all fans of cinema. “The film was open caption, the entire film, so you couldn’t just turn it off and on,” Matlin told Variety Senior Entertainment Writer Angelique Jackson. “For me, it made me feel very included, because I could sit and watch the film with everyone reacting the same way, the same time, feeling the same emotions. Lathan, most recently known for her Emmy-nominated guest starring role on season 3 of HBO’s Succession, also reflected on the upcoming season of the HBO series.
Lathan portrayed attorney Lisa Arthur on the Emmy-winning series’ most recent season, representing Jeremy Strong’s troubled media heir Kendall Roy. There’s a point when a movie starts dropping too many references to other movies that the enthusiasm gets a little suspicious. In director Thembi L. Banks’ debut feature “Young. Wild. Free.”— the title styled as such for no reason in particular — a mysterious woman with “Euphoria” eye-makeup named Cassidy (Sierra Capri) suddenly starts spouting them with abandon about 30 minutes in. “Did you know this is the diner from ‘Reservoir Dogs?,'” she says while digging into some pancakes at the diner from “Reservoir Dogs.” Over the course of the rest of the film’s running time, she proceeds to name drop “Dazed and Confused,” “Unforgiven,” and “Kill Bill.” Something is up.
And something is indeed up in the drama, which is . As the Letterboxd-friendly dialogue would imply: This is one you’ve seen before, and it’s sloppily executed.

In Thembi Banks’ “Young. Wild. Free.,” a visually confident, shape-shifting yet sometimes wandering coming-of-age tale, nothing comes easy to Los Angeles teen Brandon. Carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders at home and school, he is on the final day of his employment when we first meet him in the back office of a grimy burger joint. As his unsympathetic boss fires him bluntly, with a side of mockery, we pick up that Brandon has been involved in an altercation, and is thus being shown the door. It’s a scene that Banks orchestrates with vibrant and stylish intrigue.
Tasteful, vivid colors permeate “Young. Wild. Free.,” as we learn in small doses that the aforementioned squabble wasn’t the first time Brandon (played by Algee Smith of “Detroit”) has got himself in trouble with someone, displaying anger management issues. People frequently refer to “an incident” in their conversations with him,...

“Rebel Without a Cause,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The Wiz,” “Thelma & Louise,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Unforgiven,” “Dazed and Confused,” “Fight Club,” “Kill Bill” — the movie references in “Young. Wild. Free.” pass by fast and furiously. Unfortunately, only viewers who haven’t seen all of the above are likely to appreciate the cinematic tropes on which this film’s plot rests — including a final twist that, depending on one’s perception, either enhances or undermines everything to come before it.

You know the story because you've seen it a thousand times: girl robs boy, girl finds boy thanks to the wallet she stole from him, girl dates boy. Actually, I don't think anybody's ever seen that before. Until now. Thembi L. Banks' remarkably assured and hugely insightful debut film "Young. Wild. Free." is a coming-of-age story wrapped in a boldly colorful romance that changes the game when it comes to the meet-cute.
The meet-cute has long been an essential device for establishing romances. The circumstances in which our two destined lovers meet can tell us a lot about what kind of story we're about to get. For high-school senior Brandon (a brilliant Algee Smith), he's about to get the surprise of his life. Before Covid upended the film festival scene, Sundance premieres were a hotbed of drama as studio chiefs and streaming executives staked out the best seats in the theater and then beat a path for the exits as soon as the credits rolled in the hopes of outmaneuvering each other for the hottest films. After two years of going virtual, Sundance is back in-person. However, it’s unclear if the all-night bidding wars that were such a staple of past festivals will also return in force. At a time of cost-cutting and box office struggles for indie movies, a new era of fiscal restraint may be the order of the day.
But Sundance’s thin mountain air could cause all that economizing to evaporate. And if it does, here are 13 films that could have buyers writing big checks.

Any parent who somehow finds themselves watching HBO’s addictively compelling Euphoria must pray their children know no one like Rue or are raising anyone like her. The series, which debuted in 2019 just as the world locked down, has only grown in popularity. My high school students, apparently, didn’t trip over it until season two arrived earlier this year. Given the higher profile and awards it has justly earned, HBO has combined the two seasons onto DVD for home consumption, no subscription required.
Rue, played with a rawness by Zendaya, is a 17-year-old whose life began to spiral out of control after the death of her father. Alcohol, drugs, and sex were combined in varying quantities as she sought a balm, but repeated attempts at rehab proved futile. As the show’s narrator, Rue shows us her pessimistic outlook on life and helplessness; without a real sense she’s seeking redemption or salvation.

Euphoria was HBO's first foray into programming for a younger audience than its typical fare.
The Zendaya-fronted series has delivered bumper ratings, a rave reception, and recognition with major awards wins.
When the series snagged a third season renewal, rumors started to emerge that the series would be wrapping up.
However, HBO's Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys shut down reports that the series is ending.
In an interview with Deadline after the show scooped up six awards at the Emmys, Bloys clarified the network's intention.
He wants the show to continue beyond a third season and for the series to evolve as its characters get older.
There is always that worry with dramas set in high schools that they will try to keep the teenagers as teenagers for as long as possible.
But it seems like Euphoria is embracing the change, and that could keep things fresh for a fourth season -- and beyond.

When Euphoria Season 3 gets underway, one of its most popular characters will not be present.
Barbie Ferreira stunned fans this week when she took to Instagram to reveal her departure.
“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary eyed goodbye," the star shared.
“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like i did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today.”
Kat was a pivotal character on Euphoria Season 1, but the character was underutilized on Euphoria Season 2, leading to a string of reports of unrest between the actress and series creator Sam Levison.
Some of the rumors claimed Ferreira walked off the set multiple times while shooting the second season.

HBO has responded to claims that its hit series Euphoria fostered a toxic and unsafe working environment.
A Daily Beast story published last month alleged multiple issues during the production of Euphoria Season 2.
One of the alleged issues was that the people working on the show had 15 to 17-hour workdays, including "hellish" night shoots.
It was also alleged that various background actors made formal complaints to SAG-AFTRA over failure “to provide them meals on time and refusing to let people use the bathroom,” according to the article.
Another allegation claimed Barbie Ferreira (Kat) slipped and injured herself while filming a hot tub scene.
“The well-being of cast and crew on our productions is always a top priority," HBO shared in a statement to Deadline.
"The production was in full compliance with all safety guidelines and guild protocols."

Sherri Shepherd wasn’t a nominee at the 13th Aafca Awards on Wednesday night, but she certainly had the look of a winner.
Shepherd was on hand at the annual awards show — which celebrates the best in film each year — to present the best actress award to her “Chi-town sister” Jennifer Hudson, who the organization’s near-100 members honored for playing Aretha Franklin in “Respect.”
“I’m so in awe of her, that she has reinvented herself but she’s still singing those soulful gospel songs, then she’s pop, then she can get in there and act her butt off and did an amazing job in ‘Respect,’” Shepherd told Variety about Hudson on the red carpet outside the Sls Hotel in Beverly Hills. “Now the girl’s got her own talk show — welcome to the block, sis! — so, it’s very, very exciting to support her in this manner.

While season two of "Euphoria" left fans with plenty of questions, one of the most burning ones from the beginning of the season until the very end was: where the heck is McKay? The original trailers for season two raised alarm bells among fans because season one character Chris McKay (Algee Smith), Cassie's boyfriend, was noticeably absent, leaving fans to wonder if he's still going to be involved in "Euphoria." While Smith did appear in the season two premiere, it was only to officially end things with Cassie and break up Fez's fight with Nate. He did not appear in any further episodes. The question is, why?
What Happens to McKay in "Euphoria" Season 1?
We meet McKay in the first season, though he's not as present as the rest of the teens because he's older and already in college. He's been dating Cassie, but his struggles with college and football...

Fans are certainly feeling euphoric after the Season 2 “Euphoria” finale, thanks to record-breaking viewership and history-making tweets.
The Zendaya-helmed ensemble cast behind the hit HBO series cemented “Euphoria” as the network’s second-most-watched show since 2004 behind only “Game of Thrones,” as WarnerMedia reported.
The Season 2 finale marked a series high with 6.6 million viewers. According to HBO, “Euphoria” Season 2 episodes are now averaging 16.3 million viewers. To date, the second-season premiere’s viewership has approached 19 million viewers in the U.S., with the per-episode-viewership average up nearly 100 percent from the first season with just the first four episodes of Season 2.
That 16.3 million average is higher than the first three seasons of “Game of Thrones,” which averaged 9.3 million, 11.6 million, and 14.4 million respectively. “Game of Thrones” Season 4 averaged 19.1 million — which, when all is said and done, “Euphoria” could potentially beat given the Season 1 premiere’s growing figures on streaming.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Euphoria” Season 2, Episode 8, “All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name.”]
Season 2 of “Euphoria” is at odds with itself. Few sections work together. Fewer still stand up on their own. Sam Levinson’s follow-up to his Emmy-winning HBO series can be not-so-cleanly broken down into three components: There’s the harrowing parts, which cover pretty much everything with Rue (Zendaya), from bone-chilling peril (like narrowly escaping a life in the sex trade) to soul-shattering despair (her relapse). Then there’s the soapy stuff, including Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Maddie (Alexa Demie), who are stuck in a “love” triangle, as well as Jules (Hunter Schafer) and Elliot (Dominic Fike), who are new friends holding damning secrets.

“Euphoria” hit another series high with Episode 6 of its second season on Sunday, drawing 5.1 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max, a 20% increase from last week and up 45% from the season average. That number was reached despite the HBO drama airing opposite Super Bowl Lvi on NBC.
As Variety previously exclusively reported, “Euphoria’s” Season 2 per-episode-viewership average was already up nearly 100% from its first season after airing just its first four episodes.
Per HBO, on Sunday, “‘Euphoria’ ranked as the No. 1 title on HBO Max in the U.S. for the fifth week in a row and the top series globally (including HBO Max viewership in LatAm and Europe.) ‘Euphoria’ was the No. 1 most social and No. 1 most talked about broadcast when excluding the Super Bowl. Episode 1 is now tracking at 16.7 million viewers across platforms, just over 2.5x the average audience of Season 1 (6.6 million viewers per episode).”
